Abstract

Currently in the teaching of landscape architecture, there is growing interest in perceptual and experiential issues. The European Landscape Convention – the established reference among actors in the field of the landscape - integrates the issue of perception in the very definition of the landscape. Teachers dealing with spatial design are thus led to develop various methodologies to tackle questions such as, how is space experienced ? How can students be made more aware of their own spatial experiences ? How can words (for naming and narrating) or graphic representations be used in this learning process ? What teaching methods (experimental protocols) should be proposed to students ? How can the work of students be analysed to further develop these methods and the theoretical framework on which they are based ? This article will explore these issues through the analysis of a teaching experiment conducted for several years in the context of a master course in landscape architecture by Ann Bergsjö (Swedish University of Agronomy in Alnarp) and inspired by the research of Catherine Szanto (Paris-La Villette School of Architecture).

2. La promenade dans les jardins de Versailles : analyse d’une expérience spatiale

Abstract

In order to appreciate a garden, the visitor must explore it. Thus, the garden must be a constant invitation, a succession of proposals to the visitor. The aesthetic experience of the garden is that of its discovery in time, through the freely chosen itinerary of the visitor. This study looks at the "spatial dialogue" formed by the physical forms of the garden and the visitor’s choices in response to the possibility of movement that these forms allow. There exists several descriptions of walks in the garden of Versailles, written during Louis XIV’s reign. The methodology consists in corroborating the physical space of the garden with the existing descriptions, in order to develop an analysis of the spatial dialogue based on contemporary philosophical and scientific theories of perception.

Abstract

Il y a aujourd’hui un intérêt croissant pour les questions de perception et d’expérience dans l’enseignement du paysage. La Convention européenne du paysage – la référence commune aux acteurs du paysage - intègre la question de la perception dans la définition même du paysage. Les enseignants de projet sont donc amenés à développer différentes méthodologies pour répondre à des questions telles que : comment fait-on l’expérience de l’espace ? Comment les étudiants peuvent-ils être sensibilisés à leur propre expérience spatiale ? Comment des mots (pour nommer ou narrer) ou des représentations graphiques peuvent-ils être mis à profit dans ces processus d’apprentissage ? Quelles formes d’apprentissage (quels protocoles expérimentaux) proposer aux étudiants ? Comment enfin analyser les travaux des étudiants pour développer ces méthodes et leurs fondements théoriques ? Cet article cherche à explorer ces thèmes à travers l’analyse d’une expérience d’enseignement du projet de paysage en master, développée par Ann Bergsjö, enseignante à l’Université suédoise d’agronomie, à partir d’un travail de recherche mené par Catherine Szanto (ENSA Paris-La Villette).
