In the past, partitions of the global ocean have been commonly carried out using relatively few environmental or biological variables. Although such partitions are undoubtedly useful on a global scale, we show that, at a basin scale, the use of a large number of biological variables greatly improves the accuracy of a partition. • Diatoms phenology is controlled by the niche-environment interaction resulting from changes in morphological traits. • Cell shape is a key adaptation that confers to each species a unique niche and a place in the sequence of annual succession. • As morphology influences long-term changes in abundance, current biogeochemical models should consider cell shape. Annual phytoplankton succession is a key ecological phenomenon that drives marine species' life cycles and energy flows within marine ecosystems. Identifying processes that control annual succession is critical to anticipate climate-induced environmental perturbations of this phenomenon and the consequences upon ecosystem functioning. Here, we demonstrate that diatoms in the North Sea undergo strong morphological changes throughout the year and that species with similar phenology possess comparable morphological traits (e.g. cell elongation) and ecological niches. The spring and autumn periods appear to be dominated by oblates (flattened cells) whereas the summer period is dominated by prolates (elongated cells). Elongation of the cell shape enhances buoyancy and confers a selective advantage in stratified low-nutrient waters typical of summer without changing a diatom's surface area/volume ratio or its ability to absorb nutrients. Diatom shape thus appears to have evolved as a key adaptation to a specific environment and confers upon a species its specific niche and phenology, and therefore its place in the sequence of annual succession. As a result, shape influences temporal changes in the abundance of diatoms and their putative response to environmental forcing. We suggest that biogeochemical and earth-system models should include diatom cell shape as a parameter in order to improve model predictions and help our understanding of the consequences of climate change on marine ecosystems. This paper analyses spatial and seasonal patterns for near-surface abundances of four Calanus species in the Northeast Atlantic based on monthly Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) Survey data collected during 2008–2016. C. finmarchicus , C. helgolandicus , C. hyperboreus and C. glacialis represent different ecosystems, and water masses with differing oceanographic properties and origins. Hence, these are considered as indicator species in climate change studies. A southern transect between Norway and the United Kingdom represented the northern North Sea, a central transect crossed the Norwegian and Iceland Seas, while a northern transect between Norway and Svalbard crossed the entrance to the Barents Sea. C. finmarchicus was prevalent everywhere, while C. helgolandicus was mainly confined to the northern North Sea though also documented downstream in the Norwegian Sea as far north as the entrance to the Barents Sea. The ratio of C. helgolandicus to C. finmarchicus abundances is expected to increase in the northern North Sea and southern Norwegian Sea given continued increases in seawater temperature. C. hyperboreus and C. glacialis were mainly associated with regions influenced by Arctic waters in the Iceland and Norwegian Seas, and south of Svalbard, respectively. Within Atlantic water masses in the central Norwegian Sea, a distinct second generation of C. finmarchicus with surprisingly high late-autumn concentrations of older stages were found. In Coastal water, two or more generations of C. finmarchicus occurred, while only one generation was evident in Arctic waters. Young C. finmarchicus of the first annual generation showed an earlier timing in Coastal than Atlantic and Arctic waters. The upper range of the temperature niche for both C. hyperboreus and C. glacialis was found to be around 7 °C. However, the peak occurrence within the study area was in 1–2 °C in Arctic water in the Iceland Sea in April for C. hyperboreus , while around 5 °C in Barents Sea Arctic water in July for C. glacialis. C. finmarchicus was present in all water masses with a peak occurrence in June at around 6 °C. C. finmarchicus generally dominated the Calanus -biomass, but C. hyperboreus in Arctic water in the Iceland and Norwegian Seas in spring, and C. helgolandicus in the northern North Sea, could match or exceed the biomass of C. finmarchicus. There is a paucity of data on long-term, spatially resolved changes in microbial diversity and biogeography in marine systems, and yet these organisms underpin fundamental ecological processes in the oceans affecting socio-economic values of the marine environment. We report results from a new autonomous Water and Microplankton Sampler (WaMS) that is carried within the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR). Whilst the CPR with its larger mesh size (270 μm), is designed to capture larger plankton, the WaMS was designed as an additional device to capture plankton below 50 μm and delicate larger species, often destroyed by net sampling methods. A 454 pyrosequencing and flow cytometric investigation of eukaryotic microbes using the partial 18S rDNA from thirteen WaMS samples collected over three months in the English Channel revealed a wide diversity of organisms. Alveolates, Fungi, and picoplanktonic Chlorophytes were the most common lineages captured despite the small sample volumes (200–250 ml). The survey also identified Cercozoa and MAST heterotrophic Stramenopiles, normally missed in microscopic-based plankton surveys. The most common was the likely parasitic LKM11 Rozellomycota lineage which comprised 43.2% of all reads and are rarely observed in marine pelagic surveys. An additional 9.5% of reads belonged to other parasitic lineages including marine Syndiniales and Ichthyosporea. Sample variation was considerable, indicating that microbial diversity is spatially or temporally patchy. Our study has shown that the WaMS sampling system is autonomous, versatile and robust, and due to its deployment on the established CPR network, is a cost-effective monitoring tool for microbial diversity for the detection of smaller and delicate taxa. Abstract: We review current knowledge and understanding of the biology and ecology of the calanoid copepod Calanus helgolandicus in European waters, as well as provide a collaborative synthesis of data from 18 laboratories and 26 sampling stations in areas distributed from the northern North Sea to the Aegean and Levantine Seas. This network of zooplankton time-series stations has enabled us to collect and synthesise seasonal and multi-annual data on abundance, body size, fecundity, hatching success and vertical distribution of C. helgolandicus. An aim was to enable comparison with its congener Calanus finmarchicus, which has been studied intensively as a key component of European and north east Atlantic marine ecosystems. C. finmarchicus is known to over-winter at depth, whereas the life-cycle of C. helgolandicus is less well understood. Overwintering populations of C. helgolandicus have been observed off the Atlantic coast between 400 and 800m, while in the Mediterranean there is evidence of significant deep-water populations at depths as great as 4200m. The biogeographical distribution of C. helgolandicus in European coastal waters covers a wide range of habitats, from open ocean to coastal environments, and its contribution to mesozooplankton biomass ranges from 6% to 93%. Highest abundances were recorded in the Adriatic and off the west coast of Spain. C. helgolandicus is generally found in 9–20°C water, with maximum abundances from 13–17°C. In contrast, C. finmarchicus is found in cooler water between 0 and 15°C, with peak abundances from 0 to 9°C. As water has warmed in the North Atlantic over recent decades, the range of C. helgolandicus and its abundance on the fringes of its expanding range have increased. This review will facilitate development of population models of C. helgolandicus. This will not only help answer remaining questions but will improve our ability to forecast future changes, in response to a warming climate, in the abundance and distribution of this important species. • High overwintering biomass in Norwegian Trench and north-west North Sea shelf. • Inflow accounts for 41% of North Sea biomass and drives interannual variability. • Norwegian Trench and East Shetland Atlantic Inflow are important inflow pathways. • C. finmarchicus in the North Sea is not self-sustained but dependent on the inflow. • Biomass carried by East Shetland Atlantic Inflow decreases over 2000–2016. Calanoid copepods are key taxa in the North Sea as they are the main food source for many fish stocks, such as herring, mackerel and cod. In this study we use an individual-based model for Calanus finmarchicus embedded in the NORWegian ECOlogical Model system (NORWECOM) to investigate important population parameters such as biomass and abundance, distribution and interannual variability of the overwintering population, as well as the inflow of C. finmarchicus into the North Sea from adjacent areas for the 2000–2016 period. The modelled spatial–temporal patterns of C. finmarchicus abundance is comparable with the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) Survey data in the northern North Sea. The simulated annual mean biomass of C. finmarchicus amounts to 0.94 million-tonnes of carbon. High overwintering biomass appears in the Norwegian Trench as well as in the north-west shelf region of the North Sea. A decreasing trend in the overwintering biomass has been detected on the path of the East Shetland Atlantic Inflow (ESAI) over the simulated period. The inflow of C. finmarchicus biomass into the North Sea from the north constitutes on average 41% of the annual mean biomass in the North Sea during the simulated 17 years, and thus determines the interannual variability of the biomass. We conclude that the C. finmarchicus population in the North Sea is not self-sustained and is highly dependent on the inflow of C. finmarchicus from the Faroe-Shetland Channel and south of the Norwegian Sea. C. finmarchicus enter the North Sea via three branches of the North Atlantic current with variable depths depending on seasons and topography. Beside the western flank of the Norwegian Trench (carrying 57% of the inflow biomass), we suggest that the ESAI is also an important agent carrying 37% of the total C. finmarchicus inflow biomass through the shelf area into the north-west of the North Sea. The annual mean outflow biomass is larger than the inflow biomass (0.52 versus 0.39 million-tonnes carbon per year), which indicates that the North Sea serves as a feeding ground and growth region for C. finmarchicus.
