Abstract

The article discusses the reasons behind the structural engineering failure of the Grand Teton dam in 1976 in Idaho. The earthfill dams in the area were built out of clayey silts that has low plasticity composition, which less crack-resistant and is one reason of the structural failure of the dam. It states that piping, which occurs on the lower portions of an earth dam, and where silt was predominant in the nature of the soil, was not the cause for its failure.
