In this paper the possibility of using transient tests, generated by the Portable Pressure Wave Maker (PPWM) device, as a powerful tool for singularity detection, is checked in a real transmission main. During tests, small pressure waves – with an entity smaller than 1 m of water column – are injected by means of the PPWM, just upstream of the end reservoir. The results of the field test are discussed in terms of the time needed to prepare the experiments, their repeatability, and effectiveness of the injected pressure waves.

Ever growing water needs cause the rising of peak demand which influences the sourcing and effluent costs and causes an increased outwear of the water distribution system components. To get closer to the ideal flat-demand case, it is necessary to make consumers use water more rationally and/or shift water uses from high-loading instants. In the case that consumers are equipped with smart meters it is technically possible to apply dynamic water pricing which is determined through an optimization of cumulative costs for the water use profile. These costs are covered by water distribution revenues in a full cost recovery principle.

© 2014 The Authors. This paper introduces a new approach to water management that is 'Safe & SuRe'. This includes presenting a conceptual framework to link the emerging threats of climate change and variability, rapid urbanization and population growth, energy constraint and tightening environmental regulation through to their consequences on social, economic and environmental recipients. The framework allows identification of the role and need for mitigation, adaptation and coping strategies. The paper proposes definitions and discusses what engineering, organizational and/or social options can potentially develop the degree of resilience and sustainability needed to deal with these 21st century threats. The paper goes on to propose how these approaches might be objectively assessed and identifies gaps in our knowledge that require further research.
