The article discusses on collotype printmaking and nomenclature which was developed in the second half of the century of the nineteenth century and one of several techniques invented to fill the pressing need for a reliable ink-to-paper photographic process. Collotype remains unique in its prints in continuous tone from the surface of a gelatin plate which is regarded as the process that most closely replicates the tones of a photographic image. Furthermore, collotype printers realized that the printing process is capable of the very highest level of quality regardless of subject or image source.
