Present paper studies the contribution of both the quantum effect and the dust size distribution effect on the shock wave characters. It is concluded that the quantum effect of dust particles is negligible, while the quantum effects of both electrons and ions on the shock wave of a quantum dusty plasma cannot be neglected in certain cases. It is found that the speed and the amplitude of the shock wave, considering the dust size distribution, are larger than that of the quantum dusty plasma with the average dust size of a monosized dust plasma. Furthermore, the speed and the amplitude of the shock wave increase, while the width of the shock wave decreases as the ratios of the maximum dust size to the minimum one increases. The quantum effects may affect both the amplitude and width of the shock wave, while it has no effect on the shock wave speed. A theoretical investigation of the phase-mixing phenomenon of Langmuir oscillations (LOs) in a multi-component dusty plasma is presented. The plasma under study is a four-component plasma consisting of electrons, positrons, singly ionised positive ions and positive (or negative) polarity dust grains. The massive dust grains are assumed to form a fixed charge neutralising background, while the electrons, positrons and ions are considered to take part in the wave dynamics. A simple perturbative analysis of the governing fluid-Maxwell's equations leads us to an approximate relation for phase-mixing time of LOs, improving some earlier existing results. It is revealed that even though the dust grains remain motionless in the background, they still have significant impact on the phase-mixing process of LOs in such plasmas. It is found that the nature of the charge on the dust grains and the equilibrium dust density profoundly affect the phase-mixing time. The effects of dust size distribution and dust charge fluctuation of dust grains on the small but finite amplitude nonlinear dust ion-acoustic shock waves, in an unmagnetized multi-ion dusty plasma which contains negative ions, positive ions and electrons, are studied in this paper. A Burgers equation and its stationary solutions are obtained by using the reductive perturbation method. The analytical and numerical results show that the height with polynomial dust size distribution is larger than that of the monosized dusty plasmas with the same dust grains, but the thickness in the case of different dust grains is smaller than that of the monosized dusty plasmas. A theoretical investigation has been carried out on the growth rate of instability of the low-frequency electrostatic waves in a partially ionized four-component magnetodustyplasma in the presence of polarization force. Utilizing the method of linear mode analysis, the results of investigation have been presented. The findings of the investigation reveal that the polarization force, the external magnetic field and the dust temperature have a tendency to destabilize the the system by increasing the growth rate of instability. The characteristic of ion-acoustic solitary and shock waves propagating in a non-extensive plasma is analysed using the framework of the modified Korteweg–de Vries–Burgers (MKdVB) equation. Employing reductive perturbation technique (RPT), the MKdVB equation is derived from the basic guiding equations and further, the equation is converted to a dynamic system using travelling wave transformation. Varying different plasma parameters, phase portraits for the MKdV system are drawn and using bifurcation theory of planar dynamical system, it is observed that the MKdV system may contain shock, solitary and periodic solutions. However, it is evident from the phase portrait analysis of the MKdVB equation that due to the impact of Burgers term, the system includes only the shock and solitary solutions. Initially, different patterned solutions of the MKdV equation are directly derived from the corresponding Hamiltonian of the system, and employing the weighted residual method (WRM), the approximate analytical solutions of the MKdVB equation are explored using the solution of MKdV equation as initial solution. These solutions come as a desired pattern that was predicted by the phase portraits. Formation of large-amplitude double layers in a dusty plasma whose constituents are electrons, ions, warm dust grains and positive ion beam are studied using Sagdeev’s pseudopotential technique. Existence of double layers is investigated. Dust charging in an unmagnetized collisionless dusty plasma with two-temperature electrons was investigated based on the orbital motion limited theory, where the two-temperature electrons and ions are modelled by the Maxwellian distributions. Then by taking into account the effects of two-temperature electron and the associated charging fluctuations, the dispersion peculiarities of dust-acoustic waves are studied based on dust fluid dynamics. The present results show that the effect will introduce a dissipation on the mode, and the dispersion and the dissipation depend on the temperature ratio and number density ratio of hot and cold electrons. The properties of nonplanar (cylindrical and spherical) dust-acoustic solitary waves (DASWs) in an unmagnetized, collisionless three-component dusty plasma, whose constituents are negatively charged cold dust fluid, superthermal/non-Maxwellian electrons (represented by kappa distribution) and Boltzmann distributed ions, are investigated by deriving the modified Gardner (MG) equation. The well-known reductive perturbation method is employed to derive the MG equation. The basic features of nonplanar DA Gardner solitons (GSs) are discussed. The dust-acoustic instability driven by recombination of electrons and ions on the surface of charged and variably-charged dust grains as well as by collisions in dusty plasmas with significant pressure of background neutrals have been theoretically investigated. The recombination driven instability is shown to be dominant in the long wavelength regime even in the presence of dust-neutral and ion-neutral collisions, while in the shorter wavelength regime, the dust-neutral collision is found to play a major role. In an earlier research work, the dust-neutral collision was neglected in comparison to the effect due to the recombination for estimating the dust-acoustic instability; later the other report shows that the recombination effect is negligible in the presence of dust-neutral collisions. In line of this present situation our investigation revealed that the recombination is more important than dust-neutral collisions in laboratory plasma and fusion plasma, while the dust-neutral collision frequency is dominant in the interstellar plasmas. The effects of ion and dust densities and ion streaming on the recombination and collision driven mode in parameter regimes relevant for many experimental studies on dusty plasmas have also been calculated. A dusty multi-ion plasma system consisting of non-isothermal (trapped) electrons, Maxwellian (isothermal) light positive ions, warm heavy negative ions and extremely massive charge fluctuating stationary dust have been considered. The dust-ion-acoustic solitary and shock waves associated with negative ion dynamics, Maxwellian (isothermal) positive ions, trapped electrons and charge fluctuating stationary dust have been investigated by employing the reductive perturbation method. The Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers (KdV(Burgers) equation and modified Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation are derived in strongly coupled dusty plasmas containing nonthermal ions and Boltzmann distributed electrons. It is found that solitary waves and shock waves can be produced in this medium. The local, average and electronic structure of the semiconducting materials Si and Ge has been studied using multipole, maximum entropy method (MEM) and pair distribution function (PDF) analyses, using X-ray powder data. The covalent nature of bonding and the interaction between the atoms are clearly revealed by the two-dimensional MEM maps plotted on (1 0 0) and (1 1 0) planes and one-dimensional density along [1 0 0], [1 1 0] and [1 1 1] directions. The mid-bond electron densities between the atoms are 0.554 e/ų and 0.187 e/ų for Si and Ge respectively. In this work, the local structural information has also been obtained by analyzing the atomic pair distribution function. An attempt has been made in the present work to utilize the X-ray powder data sets to refine the structure and electron density distribution using the currently available versatile methods, MEM, multipole analysis and determination of pair distribution function for these two systems. Using a set of fluid equations to describe the inertial dust grain component in a dense collision-less unmagnetised plasma under the influence of weakly relativistic semiclassical electrons and positrons, the propagation of dust-acoustic wave is studied in the strong coupling regime when the dust density is non-uniform. Our main aim is to analyse the role of semiclassical and relativistic environment (frequently encountered in astrophysical context) on various features of strongly coupled dusty plasma. The semiclassical environment of the electrons and positrons is assumed to be described by the Chandrasekhar equation of state. Our second aim is to see the effect of spatial variation of the dust equilibrium density, which is known to occur due to the deformation of the Debye sheath which in turn leads to polarisation force. A new type of nonlinear Schrödinger equation with spatially varying coefficient is deduced and its modulational stability is studied in detail. The propagation of dust ion-acoustic nonlinear periodic (cnoidal) waves is investigated in an unmagnetised dusty plasma characterised by a non-thermal electron population. The equations describing the dynamics of the wave potential in the first and second orders of perturbation theory are derived, and their non-secular periodic solutions are found. The average nonlinear ion flux caused by the propagation of a cnoidal wave is determined. The nonlinear ion flux is found to depend significantly on dust concentration and non-thermality parameter.
