Experiments to determine the calcium and phosphorus requirement of the growing chick were begun at this laboratory in the spring of 1927. Four different experiments have been conducted since then two of which were of a preliminary nature and are not reported in this paper. In the meantime, experimental results on this problem have been reported by Bethke 1, 2, Buckner3, 4, 5, Mussehl6, 7, Massengale8 and Hart9 and their associates. In many of these reports, however, emphasis has been laid upon the calcium-phosphorus ratio rather than upon the quantitative requirement for these minerals. From the data of these investigators as well as from the results obtained at this laboratory, it is now possible to draw general conclusions of practical value concerning the quantitative requirement of the chick for calcium and phosphorus and the effect of variations in the calcium-phosphorus ratio on this reqnirement.
