In potato production, optimum tuber size is important to maximize crop value and hence growers target different tuber sizes at harvest to meet the localized market demand as produce size affects the pricing. Normally medium sized and large sized tubers get premium rates as compared to small tubers in the market, however, small sized tubers of specific varieties are also liked for some specific purposes and therefore get premium rates. A multi-location evaluation of 60 advanced processing clones was undertaken in the selected locations of south viz., Karnataka (Rabi and Kharif), Tamil Nadu (Kharif), Telangana (Rabi) and in Rabi crop season of West Bengal. Based on four-year trials, among advanced clones, viz., MP/12-126 consistently outperformed others during 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 in the Rabi season at different locations in Karnataka. However, MP/12-126 had almost similar yield but acceptable quality parameters as compared to controls in the Kharif seasons of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. MP/14-171 was found to have higher yield and acceptable quality traits during 2020-21, 2021-22 in the rabi season of Karnataka and Kharif season of Tamil Nadu during 2023. During the rabi season of West Bengal (2020-21, 2022-23) and the rabi season of Karnataka (2022-23) advanced clone MP/15-698 had superior performance. MP/15-651 was found to be the most widely adapted clone as it has superior performance in all states either in Rabi/Kharif or both. Based on a four-year field trial at multiple locations (6 locations) and seasons (rabi and kharif), advanced clones namely MP/12-126, MP/14-171, MP/15-651 and MP/15-698 have the potential to provide a suitable alternative to the potato growers of south and eastern India as against the existing variety/varieties with acceptable chip colour, high dry matter (>20%) and lesser total potato defects including higher process grade potato yield as compared to controls. Kufri (K) Daksh is a main season, medium maturing, high yielding, water-use-efficient table potato variety that can be grown in regions with limited water availability. It is a clonal selection from the cross between CP1748, having high water use efficiency and LT-1 tolerating high temperature stress. Its plants are tall and vigorous with field resistance to late blight. Its tubers are white-cream (light yellow), ovoid with shallow to medium eyes and cream flesh with good keeping quality. It is fertilizer responsive and can yield 30-35 t/ha under low water (≤ 20%) availability in middle Gangetic plains. Kufri Lohit is a red skin, medium maturing, main season, high yielding table potato variety recommended for cultivation in North-Indian plains (Eastern & Central plains). It can also successfully be grown in northern plains to meet the seed potato demands of regions that prefer red skin tubers. It is a clonal selection of a cross between Kufri Kanchan and Kufri Khyati. Its plants are medium tall and vigorous having field resistance to late blight. Kufri Manik is a medium maturing, main season, nutrient-rich table potato variety suitable for cultivation in Eastern plains. It is a clonal selection from the cross between Kufri Arun √ CP3192. Its plants are tall with field resistance to late blight. The variety produces attractive, deep red, round shaped tubers with medium eyes and yellow flesh. Kufri Kiran is a heat tolerant table potato variety suitable for early planting in North Indian plains and for main season planting in plateau regions. It is a clonal selection from the cross CP2372 √ CP1748. Its plants are medium tall and vigorous with tolerance to mite and hopperburn. It produces attractive white-cream, ovoid tubers with shallow eyes and cream flesh, possesses 19% tuber dry matter and has excellent keeping quality. Uttar Pradesh, particularly its western region, has better export potential for the premium early potato segment as leading Indian exporters demand export-grade tubers (>55mm) during January to tap the deficit period of fresh potatoes in the global market. With this background, a field experiment was conducted during 2020-22 in the early crop season with five promising varieties/ advanced hybrid viz., Kufri Sangam, Kufri Kiran, Kufri Neelkanth, Kufri Chipsona-4 and WS/07-113. The crop was planted in September end and harvested in mid-January. Advanced hybrid WS/07-113 recorded the highest export-grade tuber yield (4.95 t/ha), followed by Kufri Kiran (4.63 t/ha). Maximum tuber dry matter content was attained by cv. Kufri Chipsona-4 (21.3%) followed by Kufri Kiran (20.1%) and Kufri Sangam (19.3%). As a specialty segment, exporters showed keen interest in cv. Kufri Neelkanth which has 4.32 t/ha export-grade tuber yield and 18.6% specific gravity. As exporters require potatoes in January, crop duration may easily be increased to 85-90 days to achieve higher yields. Kufri Sangam is a medium maturing, main season high yielding dual purpose potato variety suitable for cultivation in northern plains (for table use) and central plains (for processing and table use). It is a clonal selection from a cross between Kufri Himsona v Kufri Pukhraj. It has compact, vigorous and medium-tall plants. It produces attractive white-cream, ovoid tubers with shallow eyes and cream flesh. It possesses 18-20% tuber dry matter, low reducing sugars (<150mg/100 g fresh weight), mealy texture, very good taste. Kufri FryoM is a medium maturing, high yielding main season French fry potato variety suitable for cultivation in North-West and Central Indian plains. It is a clonal selection from a cross between Kufri Chipsona-1 v MP/92-35. It has semi-compact, vigorous, medium-tall plants and produces attractive white cream, oblong tubers with shallow eyes and white flesh. It possesses 20% tuber dry matter content and low reducing sugars (50-90 mg/100 g fresh weight) which results into crispy French fries of very good quality in taste, texture and colour. It produces >80% process grade tuber yield and is capable of yielding 35-40 t/ha under optimum agronomical practices. Kufri Lima is a heat tolerant table potato variety suitable for early planting in North Indian plains. It is an exotic clone CIP397065.28 (CP4054) descendant of cross CIP391180.6 v CIP392820.1 developed at International Potato Center, Lima, Peru. Its plants are tall and vigorous with tolerance to mite and hopper burn. The passport data reveals that it has resistance to PYX, PVY and moderate resistance to root knot nematode. It produces attractive white-cream, ovoid tubers with shallow eyes and cream flesh, possess 19% tuber dry matter and good keeping quality. Hollow heart, a physiological disorder, impacts tuber quality and make marketable tubers unattractive and can have adverse effect on marketability of the produce. The investigation on one hundred eight(108) potato genotypes for presence of hollow heart symptoms revealed that 77 genotypes (71%) were free from hollow heart symptoms, while remaining 31 genotypes (29%) showed presence of 10-100% hollow heart symptoms. Most of the indigenous varieties and advanced clones were free from hollow heart symptoms. Screening of 5-10 medium sized tubers (80-100 gram) per genotype depending upon availability of tubers in initial or advanced clonal stages would be realistic approach for screening of hollow heart in potatoes. Sixty two indigenous and exotic potato collections were assessed for three important parameters like storage behaviour at room temperature, tuber dry matter content and cooking quality during consecutive years. The maximum, minimum temperatures and relative humidity during storage period ranged between 28 to 38°C, 20-28°C and 26 to 78%, respectively. The lesser total weight loss was recorded in 21 collections and top ten were Phulwa Red Splash (7.8%), LahTora (8.3%), Phulwa Red (8.4%), Desla Lal (8.5%), Sisa Pani (8.8%), Burma Special (9.0%), Gulabia (9.0%), Lal Mitti-1 (9.1%), Gartentic (9.1%) and K-22 (9.2%). Higher tuber dry matter percent was observed in 16 collections, top five among them were Lady Rosetta (23.0%), Jeevan Jyoti (22.7%), Desi Aloo (22.1%), DRR-Blue (22.0), Lah saw Khasi (21.9%) and lowest in Variety Nainital (14.6%). Out of 62 potato collections, 19 adjudged as floury, 16 mealy, 26 waxy and one (Assamia Aloo) as soggy. Sprouting percentage at 75 days of storage had highly significant positive correlation with percent physiological weight loss (r=0.51**, n=62), percent weight loss due to sprouts (r=0.59**) and percent total weight loss (r=0.59**). Kufri Thar-2 is a drought tolerant table potato variety suitable for cultivation in drought prone areas in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Chhattisgarh. It is an exotic clone CIP397006.18 (CP4175) descendant of cross CIP92.119 x CIP88.052 developed at International Potato Center, Lima, Peru. Its plants are medium and vigorous with resistance to late blight. It is a water use efficient variety with high drought tolerance index (1.08) and comparatively lower water requirement (74 litre/kg of potatoes under water stress conditions). The variety produces attractive, light yellow, ovoid tubers with shallow eyes and light yellow flesh, possess 20-21% tuber dry matter and has very good keeping quality. Kufri Neelkanth is a medium maturing, main season, high yielding speciality table potato variety suitable for cultivation in North Indian plains. It is a clonal selection from the cross between MS/89-1095 x CP3290. Its plants are tall and vigorous with field resistance to late blight. Kufri Ganga is a medium maturing, main season, high yielding table purpose potato variety suitable for cultivation in north Indian plains. It is a clonal selection from a cross between MS/82-638 v Kufri Gaurav. It has semicompact, vigorous and tall plants with field resistance to late blight. It produces attractive white-cream, ovoid tubers with shallow eyes and cream flesh. It possesses good keeping quality and moderate tuber dry matter (16-18%). It produces >90% marketable tuber yield and is capable of yielding 35-40 t/ha under optimum agronomical practices. Genetic parameters were assessed in 24 potato genotypes for 15 characters related to tuber yield, late blight resistance and keeping quality based field trials conducted during 2015-16 and 2016-17 in winter crop season at Modipuram. High coefficient of variation (genotypic and phenotypic) associated with high heritability and genetic advance were observed for rottage weight loss (%), sprout weight loss (%) and sprouting (%). Tuber yield showed positive association with plant vigour and marketable tuber yield but negative association with tuber dry matter. Thus for selecting varieties for table potatoes, high yielding with moderate tuber dry matter, and for selecting processing potatoes, moderate tuber yield with high tuber dry matter (> 20%) should be considered. The area under disease progress curve (late blight) showed low but significant correlation with detached leaf lesion area (cm2). Keeping quality was dependent on appearance of tubers after storage as it was negatively associated with sprouting (%), sprout weight loss (%) and physiological weight loss (%). Twenty four genotypes could be grouped into six clusters. The grouping of genotypes in clusters indicated that morphological diversity is not related to geographical diversity. Maximum contributions to genetic divergence were of sprouting (%) and sprout weight loss (%) followed by total tubers, tuber dry matter and marketable tuber yield. Though the maximum inter-cluster distances was observed between cluster III and VI, however desirable traits for improvements were available in cluster I and Cluster II. Segregating progenies for the flesh colour of tetraploid potatoes were developed by hybridization of contrasting parents Bareilly Red (Red skin, round shape, deep eyes, cream flesh with red broad vascular ring) and CP3770 (Red skin, round shape, medium deep dark red eyes, yellow flesh). Molecular profiling (ISSR and SSR markers), agronomical performance and nutritional profiling were undertaken on 64 coloured progenies. A highly polymorphic and diagnostic SSR marker (STM2005) was identified in the parents for tuber flesh colour and accordingly it showed segregating profiles in the progenies. Advanced stage clones like MSP/15-26 (yellow flesh with red vascular ring), MSP/15-44 (Yellow flesh with red vascular ring), MSP/15-51 (red purple flesh), MSP/15-56 (yellow flesh with red vascular ring/medulla, multi-coloured chips) and MSP/15-64 (purple red scattered flesh) showed superiority for nutritional components and are potential clones for use as elite germplasm and release as variety under speciality potato sector. Elite hybrid progenies of late blight resistant potato somatic hybrids were developed through hybridization with common potato varieties, and also linked ISSR markers were identified with resistant parent/progenies. Previously developed potato somatic hybrids (considered as F1 being protoplast fusion product between Solanum tuberosum dihaploid 'C-13' + S. pinnatisectum) were back-crossed with potato varieties (S. tuberosum) and true potato seed (TPS) were produced. TPS-raised seedlings were advanced to back-cross progenies clones (BC1-C1, BC1-C2, BC1-C3 and BC1-C4) during the five years based on tuber traits in field trials and field resistance to late blight. The BC1-C2 progenies were profiled by ISSR markers and alleles linked to late blight resistant somatic hybrid parent P8 and their progenies (P8 v× Kufri Jyoti) were identified. Eight promising advanced hybrids of BC1-C4 progenies (Kufri Garima v Bulk pollen: MSH/14-7; Kufri Gaurav v P2: MSH/14-129 and -131 for yield enhancement; P8 v Kufri Jyoti: MSH/14-112, -113, -115, -122 and -123 for late blight resistance and dry matter) were identified. This study concludes successful exploitation of interspecific potato somatic hybrids possessing high resistance to late blight and developed promising clones with linked ISSR alleles for genetic fidelity and breeding purposes.
