Abstract

A behavioral ecological approach to environmental and species conservation is presented. Conventional wisdoms argue that preindustrial humans conserve their resources while giving more thought to the common good. Thus, present societies only need to provide information on the effects of our actions to solve ecological problems. The behavioral ecological model, however, suggests that humans are by nature competitive and would do things only if they expect to receive immediate advantages. Thus solutions to ecological problems should provide short-term benefits in order to be carried out.
