This study focuses on the increased risk of high heat release and asphyxiation (toxic gas poisoning) in the event of a fire involving polyurethane (PU)- and MDF-based building materials, which are commonly used in buildings. Among them, polyurethane (PU) building materials are very commonly used in buildings, except in Europe and some other countries, due to their excellent thermal insulation performance. Still, problems of short-term heat release and the spread of toxic gases in the event of a fire continue to occur. To overcome these problems, researchers are actively working on introducing various flame retardants into building materials. Therefore, in this study, we produced a laboratory-sized (500 mm × 500 mm) plate-like flame-retardant board that can be utilized as a building material with a lower heat release rate and a lower toxicity index. The material was made by mixing expanded graphite and ceramic binder as flame retardants in a material that is formulated based on the cellulose of waste paper, replacing the existing building materials with a hot-press method. According to the ISO-5660-1 test on the heat release rate of the plate-like flame-retardant board, the Total Heat Release (THR) value was 2.9 (MJ/m2) for 10 min, showing an effect of reducing the THR value by 36.3 (MJ/m2) compared to the THR value of 39.2 (MJ/m2) of the specimen made using only paper. In addition, the toxicity index of the flame-retardant board was checked through the NES (Naval Engineering Standards)-713 test. As a result, the test specimen showed a toxicity index of 0.7, which is 2.4 lower than the toxicity index of 3.1 of MDF, which is utilized as a conventional building material. Based on the results of this study, the cellulose fire-retardant board showed the effect of reducing the heat release rate and toxicity index of building materials in a building fire, which reduces the risk of rapid heat spread and smoke toxicity. This has the potential to improve the evacuation time (A-SET) of evacuees in fires. The practical problem of free formaldehyde pollution in the plywood industry is that polyethylene films have been shown to be able to replace some urea–formaldehyde resins for wood adhesives. To broaden the variety of thermoplastic plywood, reduce the hot-press temperature, and save energy consumption, an ethylene–vinyl acetate (EVA) film was selected as a wood adhesive to manufacture a novel wood–plastic composite plywood via hot-press and secondary press processes. The effects of the hot-press and secondary press processes at different levels on the physical–mechanical properties of EVA plywood (tensile shear strength, 24 h water absorption, and immersion peel performance) were evaluated. The results showed that the properties of the resulting plywood using the EVA film as an adhesive could meet the type III plywood standard. The optimum hot-press time was 1 min/mm, the hot-press temperature was 110–120 °C, the hot-press pressure was 1 MPa, the dosage film was 163 g/m2, the secondary press time was 5 min, the secondary press pressure was 0.5 MPa, and the secondary press temperature was 25 °C. In this study, chemical treatment (CT; oxidation-reduction method) and physical treatment (HP; hot-pressing methods) were applied to improve the performance of silver nanowire (AgNW)-derived electrodes on a glass or flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The four-point probe method, UV-Vis spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to measure the properties of AgNW electrodes and compare them with those of indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes for exploring the possibility of using CT- and HP-based AgNW electrodes for polymer solar cell (PSC) applications. Using the CT or HP method, the sheet resistance of electrodes decreased to lower than 40 Ω sq-1 with an average high transmittance of more than 80%. Furthermore, HP reduced the surface roughness of AgNWs, which solved the inter-electrode short circuiting problem for devices. We studied the performance of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) and zinc oxide-based PSC devices. The power conversion efficiency of HP-AgNW-derived poly[4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b0]dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-(4-(2-ethylhexyl) -3-fluorothieno[3,4-b]thiophene-)-2-carboxylate-2-6-diyl] (PTB7-Th):[6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) devices was 7.83%, which was slightly lower than the performance of the device using ITO (8.03%) as a substrate. After a bend test (100 times) at a 2-cm curvature radius, the efficiency of AgNW/PET-derived PSCs was more than 70%. The performance of PSCs made with AgNWs and ITO electrodes is comparable, but the cost of using AgNWs for electrodes is much lower; therefore, HP-derived AgNWs demonstrate great potential for optoelectronic applications. Solid-state batteries (SSBs) are gaining attention as they promise to provide better safety and a higher energy density than conventional liquid electrolyte batteries. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are promising candidates due to their flexibility providing better interfacial contact between electrodes and the electrolyte. However, SPEs exhibit very low ionic conductivity at ambient temperatures, which prevents their practical use in batteries. Herein, a simple and effective technique of hot press rolling is demonstrated to improve ionic conductivity and, hence, the performance of polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP)-based solid polymer electrolyte. Applying hot press rolling to the electrolyte membrane induced structural changes in the grain boundaries, which resulted in a reduction in the crystallinity of the material and, hence, an increase in the amorphous phase of the material, which eased the movement of the lithium ions within the material. This technique also improved the surface of the membrane, making it homogeneous and smoother, which resulted in better interfacial contact between the electrodes and electrolyte. Electrochemical tests were carried out on electrolyte membranes treated with and without hot press rolling to evaluate the effect of the treatment. The hot pressed electrolyte membrane showed significant improvements in its ionic conductivity and transference number. The cycling performance of the LFP/Li batteries using a hot press rolled electrolyte was also evaluated, which gave a specific discharge capacity of 134 mAh/g at 0.1 C. Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced thermoplastic composites have gradually become increasingly popular in composite production owing to their lower hazard level, good structural flexibility and recyclability. In this work, a multilayered carbon–fabric/polycarbonate laminate (multi-CFPL) was fabricated by a two-step hot-press process, mainly based on the thermoplastic properties of its polycarbonate (PC) matrix. Different from the conventional one-step method, the two-step hot-press process was composed of two separate procedures. First, a unit-hot-press operation was introduced to prepare a single-layered carbon–fabric/PC laminate (simplified as unit-CFPL). Subsequently, a laminating-hot-press was employed to compress several as-prepared unit-CFPLs bonded together. This combined process aims to reduce the hot-press temperature and pressure, as well as facilitate the structure designability of this new composite. Several mechanical investigations were conducted to analyze the effect of the hot-press parameters and unit-CFPL numbers on the performance of this multi-CFPL material, including flexural, uniaxial tensile and impact tests. The results reveal that the multi-CFPL exhibits a good stability of flexural and tensile properties in terms of strength and modulus. Furthermore, during impact tests, the multi-CFPL presents an accelerated growth of peak force and energy absorption capability with increasing unit-CFPL layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environmentally friendly plywood panels were produced by a hot-pressing process using magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC) as a no-added formaldehyde adhesive. Magnesium oxychloride cement binders were prepared with different molar ratios of MgO:MgCl2 (M/C) and H2O:MgCl2 (W/C) ranging from 6 to 12 and 15 to 21, respectively, for plywood production. The binder properties measured were gel time, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transom infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The quality of the plywood panels was analyzed based on their mechanical (shear and bending) and physical (thickness swelling and water absorption) properties. A positive effect on the properties of the MOC binder as well as on the properties of the plywood was observed by increasing the molar ratio M/C up to a value of 9. The shear and flexural properties of the plywood specimens were negatively affected by further increasing the molar ratio M/C to 12 and the molar ratio W/C from 15 to 21. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed a peak temperature of less than 100 °C for MOC curing, which meets the requirements of hot press technology. No delamination of the plywood specimens was observed after 24 h immersion in tap water or 6 h immersion in boiling water and after a cyclic delamination test. Disposable surgical gowns are usually made from petroleum-based synthetic fibers that do not naturally decompose, impacting the environment. A promising approach to diminish the environmental impact of disposable gowns involves utilizing natural fibers and/or bio-based synthetic fibers. In this study, composite webs from polylactic acid (PLA) bicomponent fiber and natural fibers, cattail and kapok fibers, were prepared using the hot press method. Only the sheath region of the PLA bicomponent fiber melted, acting as an adhesive that enhanced the strength and reduced the thickness of the composite web compared with its state before hot pressing. The mechanical and physical properties of these composite webs were evaluated. Composite webs created from kapok fibers displayed a creamy yellowish-white color, while those made from cattail fibers showed a light yellowish-brown color. Additionally, the addition of natural fibers endowed the composite webs with hydrophobic properties. The maximum natural fiber content, at a ratio of 30:70 (natural fiber to PLA fiber), can be incorporated while maintaining proper water vapor permeability and mechanical properties. With the rapid development of the transport industry, there is a higher demand for environmental friendliness, durability, and stability of tires. Rubber composites with excellent mechanical properties, abrasion resistance, and low heat generation are very important for the preparation of green tires. In this study, the all-aqueous phase process was initially employed to prepare 2-Amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (AZT) functionalized graphene oxide (AGO). Subsequently, modified graphene oxide/silica/natural rubber (AGO/SiO2/NR) composites were obtained through latex blending and hot press vulcanization processes. This method was environmentally friendly and exhibited high modification efficiency. Benefiting from the good dispersion of AGO in the latex and the cross-linking reaction between AGO and NR, AGO/SiO2/NR composites with good dispersion and enhanced interfacial interaction were finally obtained. AGO/SiO2/NR composites showed significantly improved overall performance. Compared to GO/SiO2/NR composites, the tensile strength (28.1 MPa) and tear strength (75.3 N/mm) of the AGO/SiO2/NR composites were significantly increased, while the heat build-up value (10.4 °C) and DIN abrasion volume (74.9 mm3) were significantly reduced. In addition, the steady-state temperature field distribution inside the tire was visualized by ANSYS finite element simulation. The maximum temperature of the prepared AGO/SiO2/NR was reduced by 18.2% compared to that of the GO/SiO2/NR tires. With the rapid development of the pipeline transportation and exploitation of mineral resources, there is an urgent requirement for high-performance polymer matrix composites with low friction and wear, especially under oxidative and prolonged working conditions. In this work, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) matrix composites with the addition of carbon fibers (CFs), TiC, and MoS2 were prepared by the hot press sintering method. The influence of thermal oxygen aging time (90 °C, 0 h–64 h) on their mechanical and frictional performance was investigated. The results showed that TiC ceramic particles can increase wear resistance, especially by aging times up to 32 and 64 h. The wear mechanisms were analyzed based on the results of SEM images, EDS, and Raman spectra. All-cellulose composites (ACCs) are manufactured using only cellulose as a raw material. Biobased materials are more sustainable alternatives to the petroleum-based composites that are used in many technical and life-science applications. In this study, an aquatic NaOH-urea solvent system was used to produce sustainable ACCs from wood-based woven textiles with and without the addition of TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose (at 1 wt.-%). This study investigated the effects of dissolution time, temperature during hot press, and the addition of TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose on the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites. The results showed a significant change in the tensile properties of the layered textile composite at dissolution times of 30 s and 1 min, while ACC elongation was the highest after 2 and 5 min. Changes in hot press temperature from 70 °C to 150 °C had a significant effect: with an increase in hot press temperature, the tensile strength increased and the elongation at break decreased. Incorporating TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose into the interface of textile layers before partial dissolution improved tensile strength and, even more markedly, the elongation at break. According to thermal analyses, textile-based ACCs have a higher storage modulus (0.6 GPa) and thermal stabilization than ACCs with nanocellulose additives. The impact resistance of layered polymer structures using polyvinyl butyral (PVB) in combination with Kevlar® fabric and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were fabricated and tested. Methods of wet impregnation and hot-press impregnation and consolidation of fabric with PVB and UHMWPE were used to manufacture multilayer constructs. All sandwich constructs were fixed to the surface of ballistic clay and subject to a free drop-weight test with a conical impactor having a small contact area. All tests were made at the same impact energy of 9.3 J and velocity of 2.85 m/s. The change in the resistance force was recorded using a piezoelectric force sensor at the time intervals of 40 μs. Using experimental force–time history, the change in the impactor's velocity, the depth of impactor penetration, the energy transformation at various stages of impactor interaction with the sample, and other parameters were obtained. Three indicators were considered as the main criteria for the effectiveness of a sample's resistance to impact: (1) minimum deformation, bulging, of the panel backside at the moment of impact, (2) minimum absorption of impact energy per areal density, and (3) minimal or, better yet, no destruction of structural integrity. Under the tested conditions, the rigid Kevlar–PVB–Kevlar sandwich at the frontside and relatively soft but flexible UHMWPE–Kevlar–UHMWPE layers in the middle helped to localize and absorb impact energy, while the backside Kevlar–PVB–Kevlar sandwich minimized local bulging providing the best overall performance. Lignin is the natural binder in wood and lignocellulosic plants and is regarded as the main natural and renewable source of phenolic compounds. Its incorporation in the composition of fiberboards will enhance both the environmental performance of the panels and the complex use of natural resources. In recent years, the increased valorization of hydrolysis lignin in value-added applications, including adhesives for bonding fiberboard panels, has gained significant research interest. Markedly, a major drawback is the retention of lignin in the pulp until the hot-pressing process. This problem could be overcome by using a small content of phenol–formaldehyde (PF) resin in the adhesive mixture as an auxiliary binder. The aim of this research work was to investigate and evaluate the effect of the hot-pressing temperature, varied from 150 °C to 200 °C, in a modified hot-press cycle on the main physical and mechanical properties of fiberboard panels bonded with unmodified technical hydrolysis lignin (THL) as the main binder and PF resin as an auxiliary one. It was found that panels with very good mechanical properties can be fabricated even at a hot-pressing temperature of 160 °C, while to provide the panels with satisfactory waterproof properties, it is necessary to have a hot-pressing temperature of at least 190 °C. This study presents an analysis of films which consist of two layers; one layer is PVDF as the matrix, along with fillers BaTiO3 (BT), and the second is one bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) filled with Fe3O4. The mass fraction of BT in PVDF was 5%, and the samples were differentiated based on the duration of the mechanical activation of BT. This innovative PVDF laminate polymer with environmentally friendly fillers aligns with the concept of circular usage, resulting in a reduction in plastic content and potential improvement of the piezoelectric properties of the entire composite. This work presents new, multifunctional "green" packaging materials that potentially could be a good alternative to specific popular materials used for this purpose. The synthesis of the films was carried out using the hot press method. Tensile tests, water vapor permeability examination, and structural analyses using SEM-EDS and FTIR have been conducted. The sample PVDF/BT20/BNC/Fe3O4 exhibited the best barrier properties (impermeability to water vapor), while the highest tensile strength and toughness were exhibited by the PVDF/BT5/BNC/Fe3O4 sample. With the increasing volume of synthetic fiber waste, interest in plastic reuse technologies has grown. To address this issue, physical and chemical recycling techniques for polyamide, a major component of textile waste, have been developed. This study investigates the remelting and reforming properties of four types of pristine and recycled polyamide 6, focusing on how the microstructural arrangement of recycled polyamides affects polymer fiber formation. DSC and FT-IR were used to determine the thermal properties and chemical composition of the reformed thin films. Differences in the elongation behavior of molten fibers during the spinning process were also observed, and the morphology of the resulting fibers was examined via SEM. Birefringence analysis revealed that the uniformity of the molecular structure greatly influenced differences in the re-fiberization process, suggesting that chemically recycled polyamide is the most suitable material for re-fiberization with its high structural similarity to pristine polyamide. This study investigates the influence of a hot press process on the properties of hemp fiber-reinforced organo sheets. Plain-woven fabric made from hemp staple fiber yarns is used as textile reinforcement, together with a recycled poly-lactic acid (PLA) matrix. Process pressure and temperature are considered with three factor levels for each parameter. The parameter influence is examined based on the B-factor model, which considers the temperature-dependent viscosity of the polymer, as well as the process pressure for the calculation of a dimensionless value. Increasing these parameters theoretically promotes improvements in impregnation. This study found that the considered recycled polymer only allows a narrow corridor to achieve adequate impregnation quality alongside optimal bending properties. Temperatures below 170 °C impede impregnation due to the high melt viscosity, while temperature increases to 185 °C show the first signs of thermal degradation, with reduced bending modulus and strength. A comparison with hemp fiber-reinforced virgin polypropylene, manufactured with identical process parameters, showed that this reduction can be mainly attributed to polymer degradation rather than reduction in fiber properties. The process pressure should be at least 1.5 MPa to allow for sufficient compaction of the textile stack, thus reducing theoretical pore volume content to a minimum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wearable energy storage devices require high mechanical stability and high-capacitance flexible electrodes. In this study, we design a flexible supercapacitor electrode consisting of 1-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNT), cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), and manganese dioxide nanowires (MnO2 NWs). The flexible and conductive CNT/CNF-MnO2 NWs suspension was first prepared via ultrasonic dispersion approach, followed by vacuum filtration and hot press to form the composite paper electrode. The morphological studies show entanglement between CNT and CNF, which supports the mechanical properties of the composite. The CNT/CNF-MnO2 NWs electrode exhibits lower resistance when subjected to various bending angles (−120–+120°) compared to the CNT/CNF electrode. In addition, the solid-state supercapacitor also shows a high energy density of 38 μWh cm−2 and capacitance retention of 83.2% after 5000 cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sugarcane straw fiber (SSF) samples were prepared by chemical pulping (CP) and steam explosion (STE). CP (5, 10, 15% NaOH + 0.2% w/w anthraquinone at 121 °C for 1 h) and STE pressure (1.77, 1.96, and 2.16 MPa at 220 °C for 4 min) SSF trays were molded with a hydraulic hot-press machine at 120 °C, 7 min, and 1.72 MPa. The yield (%) of SSF from STE (54–60% dry basis (db.)) was higher than CP (32–48% db.). STE trays had greater tensile strength than CP. However, STE's elongation and compression strength was lower than CP tray samples. The trays made from SSF using STE had less swelling in thickness, longer water wetting time, and a higher water contact angle than those made from CP. The micrographs displayed a smaller size of SSF obtained in STE than the CP. The appearance and area of peaks in ATR-FTIR spectra and XRD diffractograms, respectively, revealed that the STE trays had a larger residual lignin content from the lignin study and a lower crystallinity index than the CP trays. Moreover, the lightness values of the STE trays were lower than those of the CP trays due to lignin retention. The study results indicate that CP is the preferred method for producing SSF packaging material with high flexibility and fiber purity. However, when considering the specific SF of 4.28, the STE treatment showed superior physical and mechanical properties compared to CP. This suggests that STE could be an excellent alternative green pulping technique for producing durable biobased trays. Overall, the findings highlight the potential of STE as a viable option for obtaining trays with desirable characteristics, providing a sustainable and efficient approach to tray production. Most adhesives used in the wood-based panel (WBP) industry are petroleum-based and are associated with environmental impact and price fluctuations. Furthermore, most have potential adverse health impacts, such as formaldehyde emissions. This has led to interest from the WBP industry in developing adhesives with bio-based and/or non-hazardous components. This research focuses on the replacement of phenol-formaldehyde resins by Kraft lignin for phenol substitution and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) for formaldehyde substitution. Resin development and optimization was carried out regarding varying parameters such as molar ratio, temperature or pH. The adhesive properties were analyzed using a rheometer, gel timer and a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The bonding performances were evaluated using an Automated Bonding Evaluation System (ABES). Particleboards were produced using a hot press, and their internal bond strength (IB) was evaluated according to SN EN 319. Hardening of the adhesive could be achieved at low temperatures by increasing or decreasing the pH. The most promising results were obtained at pH 13.7. The adhesive performances were improved by adding filler and extender (up to 28.6% based on dry resin) and several boards were produced reaching P1 requirements. A particleboard achieved a mean IB of 0.29 N/mm2, almost reaching almost P2 requirements. However, adhesive reactivity and strength must be improved for industrial use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2-Pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDC) is a chemically stable metabolic intermediate of lignin that can be produced on a large scale by transforming bacteria. Novel biomass-based polymers based on PDC were synthesized by Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) and fully characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopies, thermal analysis, and tensile lap shear strength measurements. The onset decomposition temperatures of these PDC-based polymers were all above 200 °C. In addition, the PDC-based polymers exhibited strong adhesive properties to various metal plates, with the highest adhesion to a copper plate of 5.73 MPa. Interestingly, this result was in contrast to our previous findings that PDC-based polymers weakly adhere to copper. Furthermore, when bifunctional alkyne and azide monomers were polymerized in situ under hot-press conditions for 1 h, the resulting PDC-based polymer displayed a similar adhesion to a copper plate of 4.18 MPa. The high affinity of the triazole ring to copper ions improved the adhesive ability and selectivity of the PDC-based polymers to copper while still maintaining the strong adhesive ability to other metals, which is conducive to enhancing the versatility of PDC-based polymers as adhesives. Biobased and biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are currently gaining momentum. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) polymer has a useful processing window for extrusion and injection molding of packaging, agricultural and fishery applications with required flexibility. Processing PHBHHx into fibers using electrospinning or centrifugal fiber spinning (CFS) can further broaden the application area, although CFS remains rather unexplored. In this study, PHBHHx fibers are centrifugally spun from 4–12 wt.% polymer/chloroform solutions. Beads and beads-on-a-string (BOAS) fibrous structures with an average diameter (ϕav) between 0.5 and 1.6 µm form at 4–8 wt.% polymer concentrations, while more continuous fibers (ϕav = 3.6–4.6 µm) with few beads form at 10–12 wt.% polymer concentrations. This change is correlated with increased solution viscosity and enhanced mechanical properties of the fiber mats (strength, stiffness and elongation values range between 1.2–9.4 MPa, 11–93 MPa, and 102–188%, respectively), though the crystallinity degree of the fibers remains constant (33.0–34.3%). In addition, PHBHHx fibers are shown to anneal at 160 °C in a hot press into 10–20 µm compact top-layers on PHBHHx film substrates. We conclude that CFS is a promising novel processing technique for the production of PHBHHx fibers with tunable morphology and properties. Soy flour dispersions are used as adhesives for bonding interior wood laminates, but the high viscosity of these dispersions requires low solids in the adhesive formulations; the greater water content causes excessive steam pressure during hot press manufacturing. This limits the utility of soy adhesives in replacing urea–formaldehyde adhesives; thus, understanding the cause of high soy viscosities is important. Lack of literature on aqueous soy flour dispersion rheology led to our dynamic rheology studies of these dispersions to understand high viscosity and the effect of various additives. Even at low soy solids, the elastic nature outweighs the viscous properties at low shear, although increasing the shear results in shear-thinning behavior after the yield point. At even higher shear, beyond the flow point where the storage and loss moduli cross, some of the dispersions show an additional shear thinning transition. The comparison of the rheological properties of aqueous dispersions of the soy flour and protein isolate, and another natural protein, ovalbumin from egg whites, led to a better understanding of different types of rheological behaviors. The experimental observations of two observed shear thinning events for soy are consistent with the model of dispersed particles, forming clusters that then form large scale flocculants. In this study, silica in the form of raw local natural sand was added to high-density-polyethylene (HDPE) in order to develop a composite material in the form of sheets that could have potential applications in thin film industries, such as packaging, or recycling industries, such as in 3D printing. The silica/HDPE composite sheets were developed using a melt extruder followed by using a hot press for compression molding. The impact of two different particle sizes (25 µm and 5 µm) of the silica particles on selected properties such as toughness, elastic modulus, ductility, and composite density were analyzed. A considerable increase in the toughness and elastic modulus was observed from 0 wt% to 20 wt% with a 25 µm filler size. However, a general decreasing trend was observed in the material's toughness and elastic modulus with decreasing particle size. A similar trend was observed for the ductility and the tensile strength of the sheets prepared from both filler particle sizes. In terms of the composite density, as the filler was increased from 20 wt% to 50 wt%, an increase in the composite densities was noticed for both particle sizes. Additionally, the sheets developed with 25 µm particle size had a slightly higher density than the 5 µm particle size, which is expected as the size can account for the higher weight. Results from this work aim to analyze the use of local sand as a filler material that can contribute towards maximizing the potential of such composite materials developed in extrusion industries. In the processing of thermoplastic composites, great importance is attributed to the consolidation step, as it can significantly reduce the porosity of the semi-finished product and thus influence considerably the quality of the final component. This work presents an approach to modeling the thermodynamic behavior of composite materials during hot-press consolidation. For this purpose a multi-region, multi-phase and multi-component-mixture model was developed using the simulation toolbox OpenFOAM®. The sensitivity of the model was tested by varying the thermal parameters and mesh resolution, confirming its robustness. Validity of the model was confirmed by comparing simulation results to experimental data for (i) polycarbonate with 44% carbon fiber by volume and (ii) polypropylene with 45.3% glass fiber by volume. The simulation allows very precise estimation of when a particular temperature, such as the glass transition temperature or melting point, will be reached at the core of a composite. In relation to the total process time, maximum deviation of the simulation from the experimental data amounted to 2.84%. Carbon–silica dual-phase filler (CSDPF)/natural rubber (NR) vulcanizate was prepared by mechanical blending, followed by a hot-press vulcanization. The dispersion of CSDPF in the NR matrix and the effects of CSDPF on the filler–rubber interaction and structure of the rubber network were studied. Scanning electron microscope results showed that CSDPF dispersed uniformly; however, there were some aggregates of CSDPF when loading too many fillers. With an increase in CSDPF, the interaction between CSDPF and NR chains increases, which was detected by bound rubber in the CSDPF/NR compound. The spectra of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance revealed that CSDPF could promote the formation of poly-sulfidic crosslink in the rubber vulcanization network. Further, the molecular chain movement ability of vulcanizates decreases according to the spin–spin relaxation of 1H nuclei in CSDPF/NR compounds. The use of natural fibers or particles as alternative raw materials for particleboard production is essential due to the shrinking forest area. Currently, dung waste from the Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is being used as a raw material for particleboard due to its high fiber content. Although the product still has inferior mechanical and physical characteristics, it can be improved by layering bamboo. Therefore, this study aimed to enhance the mechanical and physical qualities of elephant dung particleboard by adding layers of bamboo. The particleboard constructed had three layers; namely, the face and back in the form of a bamboo layers, as well as the core, which was in the form of elephant dung. The elephant dung was evenly mixed with isocyanate adhesive using a spray gun, and the bamboo layers were coated with adhesive on one side of the surface. The sample was subjected to a hot press at a temperature of 150 °C and 30 kg/cm2 pressure for 10 min. Generally, JIS A 5908-2003 is the specification used to test the physical and mechanical properties of particleboard. During the experiment, the characteristics examined include density, moisture content, water absorption, thickness swelling, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and internal bonding, which were enhanced by using layers of bamboo. The results showed that the physical properties of the particleboard with bamboo layers were a density of 0.62–0.69 g/cm3, a moisture content of 7.87–10.35%, water absorption of 38.27–68.58%, and a thickness swelling of 10.87–30.00%, which met the minimum standards of JIS A 5908-2003. The mechanical characteristics had values for the modulus of elasticity of 1952–7282 MPa, the modulus of rupture of 20.44–68.27 MPa, and the internal bonding of 0.16–0.38 MPa, which met the JIS A 5908-2003 standard. This paper presents the thermal and flammability properties of woven kenaf/polyester-reinforced polylactic acid hybrid laminated composites. The effects of the fiber content and stacking sequences of hybrid composites were examined. The hybrid composites were fabricated using the hot press method. Thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and flammability properties of woven kenaf/polyester-reinforced polylactic hybrid composites were reported. The thermal results have demonstrated the effect of the hybridization of the composites on the thermal stability and viscoelastic properties of the laminates. The work also measured the burning rate of the hybrid composites during the flammability test. The S7 sample that consisted of all woven kenaf layers in composite recorded the highest char residue of 10%, and the S8 sample displayed the highest decomposition temperature among all samples. However, as for hybrid composites, the S5 sample shows the optimum result with a high char yield and exhibited the lowest burning rate at 29 mm/min. In this study, natural silk web and natural silk non-woven fabric were prepared mechanically using the binding character of the sericin in silk. The effect of process variables on the preparation, structure, and properties of the silk web and the non-woven fabric was examined. The reeling velocity affected the morphology and mechanical properties of the web but had almost no influence on the crystalline structure of the silk. From the viewpoint of reel-ability and the mechanical properties (work of rupture) of silk web, a reeling velocity of 39.2 m/min represented the optimal processing velocity. The porosity and swelling ratio of the silk web decreased slightly with increasing reeling velocity. Furthermore, the reeling bath temperature had a significant effect on the reel-ability of silk filaments from a silkworm cocoon. Bath temperatures ≥50 °C yielded good reel-ability (>900 m reeling length). The porosity, swelling ratio in water, and mechanical properties of the silk web and silk non-woven fabric changed only slightly with the reeling bath temperature but changed significantly with the hot press treatment. Waterproof-breathable (WB) materials with outstanding waterproofness, breathability, and mechanical performance are critical in diverse consumer applications. Electrospun nanofibrous membranes with thin fiber diameters, small pore sizes, and high porosity have attracted significant attention in the WB fabric field. Hot-press treatment technology can induce the formation of inter-fiber fusion structures and hence improve the waterproofness and mechanical performance. By combining electrospinning and hot-press treatment technology, polyurethane/fluorinated polyurethane/thermoplastic polyurethane/alkylsilane-functionalized graphene (PU/FPU/TPU/FG) nanofiber WB fabric was fabricated. Subsequently, the morphologies, porous structure, hydrostatic pressure, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), and stress–strain behavior of the nanofiber WB fabric were systematically investigated. The introduction of the hydrophobic FG sheet structure and the formation of the inter-fiber fusion structure greatly improved not only the waterproofness but also the mechanical performance of the nanofiber WB fabric. The optimized PU/FPU/TPU-50/FG-1.5 WB fabric exhibited an excellent comprehensive performance: a high hydrostatic pressure of 80.4 kPa, a modest WVTR of 7.6 kg m−2 d−1, and a robust tensile stress of 127.59 MPa, which could be used to achieve various applications. In an interlayered carbon fiber-reinforced polycarbonate polymer (CFRPC) composite composed of three sized of CF plies, alternating between four PC sheets, designated [PC]4[CF]3, and a new process of activating CF cross-weave cloth plies directly on both sides with homogeneous low-energy electron beam irradiation (HLEBI) before lamination assembly and hot pressing at 6.0 MPa and 537 K for 8 min was produced. Experimental results show that a dose of 215 kGy of HLEBI raised the bending strength, σb, at each experimental accumulative probability, Pa, with the σb at a median Pa of 0.50, increasing by 25% over that of the untreated sample. Three-parameter Weibull analysis showed that when quality can be controlled, a dose of 215 kGy of HLEBI can raise the statistically lowest bending strength, σs, at Pa = 0 (94.3 Mpa), with a high correlation coefficient. This is because, although it had a higher bending strength than that in the other experimental conditions, the weakest sample of the 215 kGy data set had a much lower σb value than that of the others. Electron spin resonance (ESR) of the CF showed that naturally occurring dangling bonds in CF were increased at 215 kGy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the natural weathering properties of unmodified and acetylated veneer overlaid wood‒plastic composites (vWPCs) manufactured by one-step hot press molding. The results show that the water absorption and thickness swelling of vWPC with acetylated veneer were lower than those of unmodified vWPC. In addition, the surface tensile strength of vWPC increased with increasing weight gain of acetylated veneer, and the flexural properties of vWPC were not significantly different. Furthermore, the results of natural weathering demonstrated that not only the photostability but also the modulus of elasticity (MOE) retention ratio and surface tensile strength of vWPC with acetylated veneer were significantly higher than those of vWPC with unmodified veneer. Thus, better dimensional stability, surface tensile strength, and weathering properties can be achieved when the vWPC is made with acetylated veneer, especially those containing veneers with a higher weight percent gain. In order to prepare a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer composite (CFRP) with ideal microstructure and properties, a new vacuum pressure infiltration CFRP method is proposed based on an analysis of existing CFRP preparation process methods. Research on composite material preparation systems was carried out by using this new method principle. The system mainly includes a fiber pre-forming module, a vacuum heating infiltration module, a hot-press curing molding module, and a data acquisition control module. Under the conditions of natural curing at 0 MPa + 6 h + 25 °C, vacuum heating curing at –0.05 MPa + 30 min + 80 °C, and hot-press curing at 0.7 MPa + 5 min + 50 °C, a two-dimensional (2D) CFRP with excellent microstructure and properties was successfully prepared. Observing the microstructure of the prepared composite material, it can be found that the inside of the composite material was sufficiently and uniformly infiltrated, and common preparation defects such as holes and delamination were effectively controlled. In this study, we investigated the influence of an epoxy end-capped polypropylene oxide crosslinker (epoxy-PPO) on the formation of the crosslinked network structure, the stress–strain response, and the electro-mechanical actuation performance of a maleic anhydride functionalized liquid isoprene rubber (LIR). The crosslinker amount varied from 10 (C-LIR-10) to 50 (C-LIR-50) weight parts per hundred parts (phr) of LIR. The swelling test of the cured rubbers revealed that C-LIR-20 formed the densest crosslinked network with the lowest chloroform uptake value within this series. The crosslinked rubber became stiffer in tensile response upon increasing the epoxy-PPO amount from C-LIR-10 to C-LIR-20 and then softened at higher amounts. The SEM measurements were used to relate this composition-induced softening of the rubbers to the phase morphology evolution from nanoscale homogeneity in C-LIR-10 to microscale segregations of excess crosslinkers in C-LIR-50. The use of epoxy-PPO improved the dielectric constant value of LIR; however, the leakage current through the films also increased from 25 µA DC to 320 µA DC for LIR-30 and LIR-50, respectively, during DEA operation. The electro-mechanical actuation tests with circular actuators showed that the C-LIR-10 elastomer film demonstrated a radial strain of 1.7% on activation at an electric field strength of 17.5 V/µm. At higher crosslinker amounts, the close proximity of excess epoxy-PPO molecules caused leakage current across elastomer films thus diminishing the actuation strain of otherwise relatively softer elastomers with higher dielectric constant values. The green transition trend in the wood-based panel industry aims to reduce environmental impact and waste production, and it is a viable approach to meet the increasing global demand for wood and wood-based materials as roundwood availability decreases, necessitating the development of composite products as alternatives to non-wood lignocellulosic raw materials. As a result, the purpose of this study is to examine and assess the physical, mechanical, and acoustic properties of particleboard manufactured from non-wood lignocellulosic biomass. The core layer was composed of non-wood lignocelluloses (banana stem, rice straw, coconut fiber, sugarcane bagasse, and fibrous vascular bundles (FVB) from snakefruit fronds), whereas the surface was made of belangke bamboo (Gigantochloa pruriens) and wood. The chemical characteristics, fiber dimensions and derivatives, and contact angles of non-wood lignocellulosic materials were investigated. The contact angle, which ranged from 44.57 to 62.37 degrees, was measured to determine the wettability of these materials toward adhesives. Hybrid particleboard (HPb) or sandwich particleboard (SPb) samples of 25 cm × 25 cm with a target density of 0.75 g/cm3 and a thickness of 1 cm were manufactured using 7% isocyanate adhesive (based on raw material oven dry weight). The physical parameters of the particleboard, including density, water content, water absorption (WA), and thickness swelling (TS), ranged from 0.47 to 0.79 g/cm3, 6.57 to 13.78%, 16.46 to 103.51%, and 3.38 to 39.91%, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the particleboard, including the modulus of elasticity (MOE), bending strength (MOR), and internal bond strength (IB), varied from 0.39 to 7.34 GPa, 6.52 to 87.79 MPa, and 0.03 to 0.69 MPa, respectively. Effective sound absorption materials are essential for mitigating noise pollution in urban and industrial environments, which pose serious health risks to humans. This work develops a hierarchical natural fibre binderless composite based on porous luffa, modified with localised cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), for application in acoustic panels. The impedance tube approach was employed to systematically evaluate sound absorption performance across a range of frequencies. Adding 3 wt.% and 7 wt.% CNCs to the porous luffa structure improved its sound absorption, especially in mid-to-high frequency areas. The binderless luffa panels with 3% CNC panels exhibited the most balanced performance across various thicknesses, while 7% CNC–luffa panels demonstrated excellent sound absorption averages across all frequency ranges, although increased rigidity and reflective tendencies were observed. The nano-modification successfully maintained the sound absorption coefficient with reduced panel thickness. This study establishes CNC-modified luffa composites as a sustainable and efficient alternative to conventional acoustic materials, leveraging renewable resources and lightweight characteristics. Increasing the flame retardancy of lignocellulosic materials such as Miscanthus × giganteus can effectively enable their wide use. This study examines the fireproofing process of Miscanthus particles using an eco-friendly process by grafting phytic acid and urea in aqueous solution. Miscanthus particles underwent a steam explosion step before being grafted. Fireproof binderless particle panels were manufactured from miscanthus particles with or without adding olive pomace by hot-pressing. The effect of the steam explosion and/or the flame-retardant treatment on the morphology, chemical composition and thermal stability of the particles, as well as the thermal stability of the panels, was investigated. The results showed that water impregnation followed by a steam explosion at 210 °C for 8 min resulted in particles that were rich in lignin and more homogeneous in size (length and width). Fireproof particles were produced with relatively low P and N contents. The flame retardancy of the binderless particle panels was significantly improved when using miscanthus particles treated with phytic acid and urea, as shown by a reduced heat release (HRR) and an increased time-to-ignition. However, the presence of olive pomace significantly decreased the flame retardancy of the panels. Smart textiles provide a significant technological advancement, but their development must balance traditional textile properties with electronic features. To address this challenge, this study introduces a flexible, electrically conductive composite material that can be fabricated using a continuous bi-component extrusion process, making it ideal for sensor electrodes. The primary aim was to create a composite for the filament's core, combining multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), polypropylene (PP), and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), optimised for conductivity and flexibility. This blend, suitable for bi-component extrusion processes, exemplifies the role of advanced materials in combining electrical conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and processability, which are essential for wearable technology. The composite optimisation balanced MWCNT (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 wt.%) and TPE (0, 25, and 50 wt.%) in a PP matrix. There was a significant decrease in electrical resistivity between 2.5 and 5 wt.% MWCNT, with electrical resistivity ranging from (7.64 ± 4.03)104 to (1.15 ± 0.10)10−1 Ω·m. Combining the composite with 25 wt.% TPE improved the flexibility, while with 50 wt.% TPE decreased tensile strength and hindered the masterbatch pelletising process. The final stage involved laminating the composite filament electrodes, with a 5 wt.% MWCNT/PP/(25 wt.% TPE) core and a TPE sheath, into a textile triboelectric impact detection sensor. This sensor, responding to contact and separation, produced an output voltage of approximately 5 V peak-to-peak per filament and 15 V peak-to-peak with five filaments under a 100 N force over 78.54 cm2. This preliminary study demonstrates an innovative approach to enhance the flexibility of conductive materials for smart textile applications, enabling the development of triboelectric sensor electrodes with potential applications in impact detection, fall monitoring, and motion tracking. The food packaging industry is one of the fastest growing sectors of our economy, with a large contribution to environmental concerns due to the extensive use of fossil-derived materials. Combining wood-based materials, such as particleboards, with bio-adhesives may offer a great opportunity to develop sustainable packaging solutions with active antioxidant properties. In the present work, a phenolic extract of poplar bark was produced and bio-adhesives were formulated using citric acid as a cross-linker. The impact of citric acid content on the chemical and bonding properties of bio-adhesives was evaluated. Additionally, the impact of the temperature of curing on their antioxidant capacity was also accessed. The bio-adhesives were applied in the production of particleboards, using poplar veneer particles as raw material. This study investigated the valorization of industrial lignin for producing biodegradable polybutylene succinate (PBS)–lignin copolymers. PBS was blended with varying lignin contents (0–45 wt. %) and crosslinked/grafted using dicumyl peroxide (DCP). The preparation of the copolymers by reactive extrusion was successful, with mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties comprehensively analyzed. Lignin addition decreased tensile strength but improved stiffness (modulus) and thermal stability. Crosslinking with DCP improved the interfacial adhesion between PBS and lignin, resulting in better flexural performance at moderate lignin levels. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that lignin initially improved the crystallization temperature, but hindered it at higher concentrations due to its rigid, aromatic structure. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed poor interfacial adhesion in PBS–lignin blends, but the surface morphology improved in crosslinked PBS–lignin copolymers, with less phase separation observed. An optimal lignin concentration appeared to depend on the property of interest. While 30% lignin provided the best improvement in flexural strength, 20% lignin offered a more balanced enhancement for most properties without the severe reduction in tensile strength observed at higher lignin contents. In this study, we aimed to explore the feasibility of utilizing polypropylene (PP) and natural rubber (NR) blends as alternative materials for rubber dam clamps in dentistry. The hardness of various PP/NR blend ratios was compared to the commercial product SoftClampTM. Selected blend ratios exhibiting hardness values resembling rigid plastic were further evaluated for hardness and tensile strength after undergoing 1, 5, and 10 autoclave cycles. One-way ANOVA test results found that the PP/NR blends exhibited significantly lower hardness (p < 0.001) than the commercial SoftClampTM. PP/NR ratios of 100/0, 90/10, and 80/20 exhibited hardness levels equivalent to 82%, 80%, and 75% of SoftClampTM, respectively. Two-way ANOVA revealed significant reductions in hardness (p < 0.001) and tensile strength (p < 0.001) with increasing NR content across all autoclave cycles. However, post-autoclave assessments at 1, 5, and 10 cycles demonstrated no statistically significant differences in tensile strength (p = 0.058) and hardness (p = 0.52) for PP/NR ratios of 100/0, 90/10, and 80/20 compared to their pre-autoclave states. The NR content within the PP/NR blends decreased hardness and tensile strength, while autoclaving did not significantly affect the hardness and tensile strength of the PP/NR blends. Starch foam has attracted significant attention as an alternative to expanded styrene (EPS) foam owing to its abundance and biodegradability. Despite these merits, its limited thermal insulation and flexibility compared to EPS have hindered its utilization in packaging. Herein, we report the effect of blending with starch/PBAT on foaming behavior and physical properties during foaming processing. We fabricated a starch/PBAT blend with systematically controlled blending ratios (0, 10, 15, 20, and 25 wt%) to analyze their effect on the interaction and characteristics of blended foam. The blending of starch and PBAT significantly reduced complex viscosity, enhancing resin flow during the foaming process. This improvement in resin flow led to increases in expansion ratio while reducing density and cell wall thickness. The thermo-insulation performance improved to 0.043 W/mK with 20 wt% of PBAT due to the enhanced expansion ratio and cell morphology. Additionally, the flexural strain at break improved significantly from 2.8 ± 0.6% to 9.6 ± 1.0% with increasing PBAT content. Enhanced water resistance was also observed, demonstrated by a reduction in water absorption and an extension of dissolution time. Overall, these findings underscore the potential of starch/PBAT foam to improve the thermal-insulating property, flexibility, and water resistance while maintaining their biodegradability and sustainability. Carbon-fiber-reinforced composites of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) are not easily prepared because of their high viscosity, although they can be advantageous in advanced engineering applications due to their superior mechanical properties in combination with their low specific weight and versatility. Short polyacrylonitrile-based carbon-fiber-reinforced UHMWPE composites with fiber contents of 5, 10, and 15 wt.% could easily be prepared using in situ ethylene polymerization. Therefore, MgCl2 was generated at the Brønsted acidic groups of the fiber surface by employing a reaction between the co-catalysts Mg(C4H9)2 and AlEt2Cl. Titanation with TiCl4 resulted in a catalyst directly on the fiber surface. The catalyst polymerized ethylene (2 bar pressure at 50 °C), forming a UHMWPE matrix near the surface; its fragmentation led to polymer particles associated with the fiber. The catalyst activity on the fiber surface of untreated (CF-Pr, 3.48 ± 0.24 wt.%) and oxidized fibers (CF-Ox, 7.41 ± 0.03 wt.%) was 20% lower. CF-Pr compression-molded samples showed tensile strengths of up to 50.4 ± 1.3 MPa, while CF-Ox samples reached 39.1 ± 0.6 MPa, surpassing the performance of composites prepared by melt compounding. The stiffness of 1.58 ± 0.17 GPa for a melt-compounded material was lower than the 3.24 ± 0.10 GPa for CF-Pr and 2.19 ± 0.07 GPa for CF-Ox composites. A fracture examination showed fiber pull-outs, matrix residues on the fibers, and the formation of some extensional polymer fibrils. The latter explains the higher stress at yield and the breakage of the CF-Pr based composites in particular. Conventional PP with a linear chain structure is not suitable for foam processing due to its poor rheological properties. In this study, PP was modified with PE through reactive melt blending of maleic anhydride-grafted PP (MA-PP) with a small amount of PE bearing glycidyl groups on its backbone (G-PE), with the aim of enhancing the melt rheological properties of PP to make it suitable for foam processing. An anhydride–epoxy reaction occurred between MA-PP and G-PE during the melt processing, resulting in the formation of a crosslinked polymer network, which was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy, a solubility test, and the presence of a rubbery plateau above the melting point. Melt rheological tests demonstrated that the modified PP showed a pronounced shear-thinning effect and higher elasticity compared to pristine PP. Foaming tests using supercritical carbon dioxide as a foaming agent in an autoclave demonstrated that the modified PP could produce a microcellular foam with a closed-cell structure, which was not achievable with neat PP. Corn stalk fibers extracted from cattle manure (CSFCM) represent a unique class of natural fibers that undergo biological pre-treatment during ruminant digestion. This study systematically investigates the optimization of CSFCM-reinforced friction materials through controlled silane treatment (2–10 wt.%). The biological pre-treatment through ruminant digestion creates distinctive fiber properties that influence subsequent chemical modification. Physical characterization revealed that optimized interface modification at 6 wt.% silane treatment (CSFCM-3) effectively enhanced the fiber–matrix compatibility while achieving a 34.2% reduction in water absorption and decreased apparent porosity from 9.03% to 7.85%. Tribological evaluation demonstrated superior performance stability, with CSFCM-3 maintaining friction coefficients of 0.35–0.45 across 100–350 °C and exhibiting enhanced thermal stability through a fade ratio of 14.48% and recovery ratio of 95%. The total wear rate showed significant improvement, reducing by 26.26% to 3.433 × 10−7 cm3 (N·m)−1 compared to untreated specimens. Microscopic analysis confirmed that the optimized silane modification promoted the formation of stable secondary plateaus and uniform wear patterns, contributing to enhanced tribological performance. This investigation establishes an effective approach for developing high-performance friction materials through precise control of silane treatment parameters. Paper-based packaging materials have gained attention from academia and industry for their outstanding environmental sustainability advantages. However, they still encounter major challenges, such as low mechanical strength and inadequate functionality, hindering the replacement of unsustainable packaging materials. Inspired by the remarkable strength of trees provided by cellulose fibers and the water and heat protection of trees provided by bark, this study developed a new biomass-based packaging material (SNC-C) that combines strength, thermal insulation, and water resistance. The material was created by simply blending straw nanocellulose (SNC) with oak bark (i.e., cork), which naturally provides water-resistant, thermal insulation, and unique regenerative properties. The dense layered structure formed entirely by SNC generates a tensile strength reaching up to 60.93 MPa. With the cork cavity structure, the heat transfer rate of the obtained material is reduced to 2.90–3.01 °C/(cm·min). The combining of the closed-cell structure and the suberin component of the cork results in a low water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of the material of 400.30 g/(m2·24 h). This all-biomass material with excellent performance and low environmental footprint offers a promising solution for the development of sustainable multifunctional packaging materials. As environmental pollution becomes a serious concern, considerable effort has been undertaken to develop power devices with minimal production of carbon dioxide (CO2) and exhaust gases. Owing to this effort, interest in technologies related to hybrid and electric products that use fuel cells has been increasing. The risk of human injuries owing to electromagnetic waves generated by electrical and electronic devices has been also rising, prompting the development of mitigating technologies. In addition, antistatic devices for protecting operators from static electricity have also been considered. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the development of thermoplastic carbon composites containing carbon fibers (CFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Ultimately, materials with improved mechanical properties (e.g., flexural, impact, and tensile strength properties of about +61.09%, +21.44%, +63.56%, respectively), electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding (+70.73 dB), and surface resistivity (nearly zero) can be developed by impregnating CFs and CNTs with polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resins, respectively. The total average mechanical properties of PC and ABS composites increased by 24.35% compared with that of ABS composites, while that of PC composites increased by 32.86% with that of PC and ABS composites. The utilisation of edible sources of starch such as corn, wheat, potato, and cassava has become the common approach to develop biodegradable food packaging. However, the future food security issue from the wide application of such edible starch sources has become a major concern. Consequently, exploring non-edible sources of starch for starch-based biodegradable food packaging and their property enhancement have become one of the common research interests. Although there has been a great potentials of synthesising biodegradable food packaging by direct utilisation of agro-industrial waste cassava bagasse, there have been very limited studies on this. In this context, the current study investigated the potential of developing biodegradable food packaging by directly using cassava bagasse as an alternative matrix. Two film-forming mixtures were prepared by incorporating glycerol (30% and 35%), powdered cassava bagasse and water. The films were hot-pressed at 60 °C, 100 °C, and 140 °C temperatures under 0.28 t pressure for 6 min. The best film-forming mixture and temperature combination was further tested with 0.42 t and 0.84 t pressures, followed by analysing their morphology, functional group availability and the thermal stability. Accordingly, application of 35% glycerol, with 100 °C, 0.42 t temperature and pressure, respectively, were found to be promising for film preparation. The absence of starch agglomerates in film surfaces with less defects suggested satisfactory dispersion and compatibility of starch granules and glycerol. The film prepared under 0.42 t exhibited slightly higher thermal stability. Synthesised prototypes of food packaging and the obtained characterisation results demonstrated the high feasibility of direct utilisation of cassava bagasse as an alternative, non-edible matrix to synthesise biodegradable food packaging. In this work, twin-screw extruder and compression moulding techniques were utilized to fabricate polymer blends: polypropylene (PP), polybutadiene (PB), and composites using glass fibre (GF) and flax fibre (FF). During fabrication, the polymer ratios maintained between PP and PB were 90:10, 80:20, and 70:30. Likewise, the composites were fabricated by varying the ratios between the PP, PB, and GF, which were 90PP:10PB:10GF, 80PP:20PB:10GF, and 70PP:30PB:10GF. Additionally, a hybrid composite was fabricated by adding 20% FF to the 90PP/10PB/10GF blend. The mechanical characterization revealed that the tensile strength and modulus increased by approximately 24% and 23%, respectively, for the hybrid combination (90PP/10PB/10GF/20FF) compared to pure PP (from 21.47 MPa and 1123 MPa to 26.54 MPa and 1382 MPa). Similarly, flexural strength and impact resistance showed significant improvements in hybrid samples, with flexural strength increasing by approximately 15%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was also carried out for impact-tested samples to understand the fibre-to-matrix adhesion behaviour. Regarding the DSC results, PP exhibited a melting peak between 160 °C and 170 °C. When incorporating PP into PB, a reduction in crystallinity was observed. Further, by adding GF to polymer blends, the crystallinity was increased. HDT and Vicat softening temperature results reported that the hybrid samples showed higher values of 79.3 °C and 88.2 °C, respectively, resulting in improvements of approximately 3.9% and 2.9% over standard PP. Findings from this study suggest that the novel combinations offer a promising synergy of flexibility, strength, and thermal resistance, making them suitable for medium engineering applications. Natural fiber-reinforced composites are composite materials composed of natural fibers, such as plant fibers and synthetic biopolymers. These environmentally friendly composites are biodegradable, renewable, cheap, lightweight, and low-density, attracting attention as eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic fiber-reinforced composites. In this study, natural fiber-reinforced polymer foam core layered composites were produced for the automotive industry. Fabrics woven from goat wool were used as the natural fiber. Polymer foam with expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) structures was used as the core material. During production, fibers were bonded to the upper and lower layers of the core structures using resin. The hand lay-up method was used in production. After resin application, the samples were cured under a heated press for 2 h. After the production was completed, the material was cut according to the standards (10-20-30 Joule), and impact and bending tests were conducted at three different energy levels. The experiments revealed that at 10 J, the material exhibited rebound; at 20 J, it showed resistance to stabbing; and at 30 J, it experienced penetration. While EPS foam demonstrated higher impact resistance in the 10 J test, it was found that XPS foam exhibited better impact resistance and absorption capabilities in the 20 J and 30 J tests. This study investigates the potential of reusing punched-steel waste, a significant component of solid inorganic waste, in composite materials for construction applications. Driven by the growing global demand for raw materials (which is projected to quadruple by 2050) and the need for sustainable waste management practices, this research explores the creation of a composite material (PPLK) incorporating punched-steel tape (LPM-4 grade) embedded in a polypropylene matrix. Experimental testing of PPLK specimens (310 × 90 × 6.30 mm) and finite element analysis (FEA) were employed to evaluate the mechanical properties and stress concentration coefficient. The results show that the PPLK composite exhibits a load-carrying capacity of 21.64 kN, exceeding the sum of its individual components by 11.37%, demonstrating a synergistic effect between the steel (average tensile strength 220.65 MPa) and polypropylene. FEA further revealed that increasing the matrix's modulus of elasticity to 42 MPa significantly reduces the stress concentration coefficient in the steel component, resulting in a 24% enhancement of the elastic force. This study investigated the optimal combination of compatibilizers and stabilizers to enhance the value of marine environment plastic (MEP). The composition of the plastics was analysed, and a simulated recycled plastic blend (sMEP) was prepared based on a simplified composition of actual MEP. Different concentrations of three commercial compatibilizers (C1, C2 and C3) were tested to improve tensile strength. The tensile tests indicated that the blend compatibilized with 10 wt.% C3 (polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride) exhibited the highest increase in tensile strength. This optimal compatibilization was then combined with two commercial stabilizers and applied to a simulated MEP blend. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that all blends had a continuous polyethylene phase with dispersed poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and polypropylene (PP) droplets. The simulated blend with 10 wt.% C3 exhibited a reduced PET droplet size in the dispersed phase. Differential scanning calorimetry results revealed a decrease in polyethylene crystallinity and an increase in PP crystallinity. The improved properties of the blend were attributed to the effectiveness of the C3 compatibilizer in enhancing the interface between the PP and PET phases. An effective formulation was developed to valorise marine-sourced plastics by leveraging existing scientific knowledge and accessible commercial additives. Applying this enhanced formulation to real MEP not only demonstrated its effectiveness, but also highlighted a practical approach for reducing plastic pollution and supporting circular economy principles, contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
