This study aims to explore the effects of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) content on the weld line properties of Polypropylene (PP) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) blends. In PP/TPU blends, increasing the TPU content results in a significant decrease in the PP/TPU composite's ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation values. Blends with 10 wt%, 15 wt%, and 20 wt% TPU and pure PP outperform blends with 10 wt%, 15 wt%, and 20 wt% TPU and recycled PP in terms of UTS value. The blend with 10 wt% TPU and pure PP achieves the highest UTS value of 21.85 MPa. However, the blend's elongation decreases due to the poor bonding in the weld line area. According to Taguchi's analysis, the TPU factor has a more significant overall influence on the mechanical properties of PP/TPU blends than the recycled PP factor. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) results show that the TPU area has a dimple shape on the fracture surface due to its significantly higher elongation value. The 15 wt% TPU sample achieves the highest UTS value of 35.7 MPa in ABS/TPU blends, which is considerably higher than other cases, indicating good compatibility between ABS and TPU. The sample containing 20 wt% TPU has the lowest UTS value of 21.2 MPa. Furthermore, the elongation-changing pattern corresponds to the UTS value. Interestingly, SEM results present that the fracture surface of this blend is flatter than the PP/TPU blend due to a higher compatibility rate. The 30 wt% TPU sample has a higher rate of dimple area than the 10 wt% TPU sample. Moreover, ABS/TPU blends gain a higher UTS value than PP/TPU blends. Increasing the TPU ratio mainly reduces the elastic modulus of both ABS/TPU blends and PP/TPU blends. The present study concerns the physico-chemical, structural, mechanical and thermal characterization of Acacia pennata, a natural and almost inexpensive fibre, as a potential reinforcement in polymer composites. The effect of treating the fibre with sodium acetate to increase its qualities has been seen through the use of thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), mechanical property tester, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). According to XRD analysis, the elimination of lignin and wax-like impurities resulted in an increase in the AP fibre's crystalline index (79.73%). The fibre's thermal stability was also discovered to be 365 °C. Tensile strength (557.58 MPa) and elongation at break both increased by 2.9% after treatment with sodium acetate. The surface nature and quality of AP fibres improved after sodium acetate treatment. It was confirmed by the reduction of chemical compositions (such as hemicellulose, lignin and pectin). Given its density, the fibre can be suggested as a reinforcement in polymer composites for light-weight applications because its lightweight property will be more useful for composite manufacturing. This work was investigated to prepare a reinforcing composite packaging film composited of soy protein/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and nano-TiO2. First, different film compositions were designed by the particle size of nano-TiO2, concentration of nano-TiO2, concentration of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, a dispersing agent for nano-TiO2), and pH of film casting solution. Then, the film composition that yielded the optimal physical properties was identified using orthogonal array design single-factor experiments, considering its physical properties, including tensile strength, elongation, water absorption, water vapor transmission, oxygen permeation, thermal property, and film morphology. The results displayed that the optimal film composition was (1) soy protein/PVA film with 2.5 wt% nano-TiO2, (2) 30 nm nano-TiO2 particle size, (3) 1.5 wt% PVP, and (4) pH 6.0 of film-forming solution. It yielded tensile strength of 6.77 MPa, elongation at break rate of 58.91%, and water absorption of 44.89%. Last, the films were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). SEM analysis showed that compared with the film without TiO2, the film containing TiO2 has a smoother surface, and DSC determined that adding nano-TiO2 can improve the thermostability of soy protein/PVA film. In recent years, with the development of green environmental protection, starch film has become of interest due to the wide availability of sources, low price, and biodegradability. Amylose/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend films crosslinked with different amounts of glutaraldehyde (GLU) were prepared by a solution casting method. The cross-linking degree, water sorption, tensile property, crystallization and section morphology of the films were examined. With the increase in glutaraldehyde concentration, the cross-linking degree of the blend film was improved. The wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) result indicated that cross-linking hindered the crystallization of film. The section morphology of films was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that the cross-linking degree of amylose film improved while the crystallinity decreased with the increase in glutaraldehyde content. Cross-linking had no obvious effect on the water sorption property of the blend films. The cross-linking modification significantly enhanced the tensile strength and Young's modulus, while it reduced the elongation at break of the blend films. It was found that the film with 0.5 wt % glutaraldehyde possessed the best performance: the tensile strength increased by 115%, while the elongation at break decreased by 18% even at high relative humidity (RH) of 90% compared to non-crosslinked films. Silicone rubber (SR)/vinyl-graphene oxide (vinyl-GO) nanocomposites were prepared through the hydrosilylation reaction of silicon hydrogen polydimethylsiloxane (H-PDMS) with vinyl polydimethylsiloxane (vinyl-PDMS), in which vinyl-GO was used as a nano filler. The thermally conductive and antistatic properties of the nanocomposites, and their tensile strength and thermal stability were evaluated. The thermally conductive and antistatic properties increased naturally when the nanocomposites had eight to nine parts of vinyl-GO. The addition of 9 parts of vinyl-GO increased the thermal conductivity to 0.44 from 0.17 W/m−1·K−1 of neat SR and the surface resistance value to 108 from 1014 Ω of neat SR. Vinyl-GO is effective in improving the tensile strength and toughness of the nanocomposites. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the nanocomposites were much higher than that of neat SR, especially for 10 parts of vinyl-GO in the nanocomposite, and the tensile strength was 1.84 MPa and the elongation at break was 314.1%. Additionally, compared with neat SR, the nanocomposites had a much higher thermal stability. For eight parts of vinyl-GO in the nanocomposites, H-PDMS with the selected silicon hydrogen content and vinyl-PDMS with the selected vinyl content could offer an appropriate cross-linking degree that suits the character of GO. When the nanocomposite had eight parts of vinyl-GO, its scanning electron microscope exhibited a monolayer GO with folded, twisted, and local surface folds. A recycling process of waste thermosetting polyurethane plastics was proposed based on the mechanochemical method, aiming at the three-dimensional network cross-linking structure of thermosetting polyurethane. Orthogonal experimental design was adopted to select three factors of crushing speed, crushing time, and feed amount to determine the best crushing parameters. Then, the waste polyurethane insulation boards were crushed and degraded by the mechanism of regenerative forming with the adjustable speed test machine. Accordingly, the recycled powder was obtained. Finally, nine kinds of polyurethane recycled composite plates were prepared by hot pressing process. The degradation effect of thermosetting polyurethane was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and X-ray diffraction. Moreover, the mechanical properties and thermal insulation properties of recycled composite plates were tested and analyzed. The results show that the network cross-linking molecular structure of waste thermosetting polyurethane plastics is destroyed by the effect of mechanochemical action, and methyl and aldehyde groups are decomposed. Therefore, a recycled powder with strong reactivity and plasticity is generated, which improves the activity regeneration ability. After adding thermoplastic resin, the mechanical properties and formability of recycled composite plates are enhanced, with maximum tensile strength up to 9.913 MPa. Correspondingly, the thermal insulation performance of plates is reduced. However, the minimum thermal conductivity can also reach 0.056 W/m·K. Bulk oriented films based on ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with a drawing ratio of 35 were prepared by using a low solvent concentration. Bulk oriented films were filled with fluorinated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (FMWCNTs). The structure of bulk oriented films on UHMWPE, which were manufactured at different stages of orientation, was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The addition of FMWCNTs at a concentration of 0.05 wt % in bulk oriented UHMWPE films led to an increase in the tensile strength by 10% (up to 1020 ± 23 MPa) compared to unfilled oriented films. However, the addition of FMWCNTs at a concentration of more than 0.5 wt % led to a decrease in tensile strength due to excessive accumulation of nanotubes and hindering of self-diffusion of UHMWPE macromolecules. The multiple increase in tensile strength, doubling the hardness, the formation of fibrillar structure, and the presence of carbon nanotubes led to a significant increase in tribological properties in bulk oriented films. Bulk oriented UHMWPE/1% FMWCNT films can be operated at a maximum contact pressure that is 18 times higher and exhibit a specific wear rate more than an order of magnitude and less than the traditional UHMWPE of isotropic structure. Bulk oriented UHMWPE/1% FMWCNT films have an extremely low dry coefficient of friction (COF) of 0.075 at a contact pressure of 31 MPa. Chitosan/starch-based composites were prepared by thermomechanical processing as an alternative to the traditional solution method, with the aim of fabricating environmentally friendly materials on a larger scale. Different contents and types of lignin and poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA were incorporated into chitosan/starch compositions to improve their mechanical properties. It was demonstrated that the presence of both lignin and PVA increases the values of tensile strength and elongation at break of the composites. Moreover, it was observed that by the selection of a type of lignin and PVA, it was possible to tailor the internal microstructure of the samples. The effect of various combinations of filler materials on the performance of polypropylene (PP)-based composites was investigated. PP in particulate form was used as the matrix. Milled short carbon fiber (SCF) micro-size, graphite nano-platelet (GNP), and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO2) were used as fillers. These fillers were incorporated in the polymer matrix to produce mono-filler (PP/SCF and PP/nanofiller) and hybrid composites. Hybrid composites consist of PP/10SCF/GNP, PP/10SCF/nTiO2, and PP/10SCF/GNP/nTiO2. The effect of the addition of SCF, GNP, and nTiO2 on PP-based composites was investigated by analyzing their morphological, mechanical, and physical properties. The addition of mono-filler to the PP matrix improved the mechanical properties of the composites when compared to the neat PP. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS), flexural modulus, flexural strength, and impact toughness of the hybrid composites with 15 wt % total loading of fillers, were higher than that of mono-filler composites with 15 wt % SCF (PP/15SCF). A maximum increase of 20% in the flexural modulus was observed in the hybrid composite with 10 wt % of SCF with the additional of 2.5 wt % GNP and 2.5 wt % nTiO2 when compared to PP/15SCF composite. The addition of 2.5 wt % nTiO2 to the 10 wt % SCF reinforced PP, resulted in increasing the strain at break by 15% when compared to the PP/10SCF composite. A scanning electron microscope image of the PP/10SCF composite with the addition of GNP improved the interfacial bonding between PP and SCF compared with PP/SCF alone. Polymeric parts have been increasingly used in various engineering fields. The performance of polymeric parts is significantly affected by working-environment-induced aging. In this paper, an ultrasonic-vibration-assisted injection molding system was designed and utilized to fabricate polymeric parts from isotactic polypropylene (iPP) using different processing conditions. The natural aging experiments were performed to age the fabricated iPP parts for one year. The effects of key process parameters as well as ultrasound power on the microstructures and the mechanical properties of the iPP parts after aging were systematically investigated using X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared analysis, scanning electron microscope imaging, and tensile testing. It is found that both the microstructures and the tensile strength of the iPP parts deteriorate with the increasing aging time. In addition, the crystallinity and the tensile strength decrease with the increasing melt temperature but increase with the increasing mold temperature in a given range and holding pressure. The increase in ultrasound power leads to an increase in crystallinity. However, when the ultrasound power is over 200 W, the tensile strength of the aged iPP parts decreases, which indicates that high ultrasound power may not form optimal condensed microstructures with excellent anti-aging capacity. The aim of the research was to study the effects of adding natural fillers to a polypropylene (PP) matrix on mechanical and physical properties of hybrid composites. The 10%, 15%, and 20% by weight basalt fibers (BF) and ground hazelnut shells (HS) were added to the PP matrix. Composites were produced by making use of an injection molding method. Tensile strength, tensile modulus, strain at break, Charpy impact strength, and the coefficient of thermal expansion were determined. The influence of temperature, thermal aging, and water absorption on mechanical properties was also investigated. In addition, short-time creep tests were carried out. To characterize the morphology and the filler distribution within the matrix, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used. The results showed that the addition of the two types of filler enhanced mechanical properties. Furthermore, improvements in thermal stability were monitored. After water absorption, the changes in the tensile properties of the tested composites were moderate. However, thermal aging caused a decrease in tensile strength and tensile modulus. Electrospun fiber scaffolds are gaining in importance in the area of tissue engineering. They can be used, for example, to fabricate graded implants to mimic the tendon bone junction. For the grading of the tensile strength of the fiber scaffolds, the orientation of the fibers plays a major role. This is currently measured by hand in scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. In this work, a correlation between polarimetric information generated by measuring the Mueller matrix (MM) and the orientation of the fibers of electrospun fiber scaffolds is reported. For this, the MM of fiber scaffolds, which were manufactured with different production parameters, was measured and analyzed. These data were correlated with fiber orientation and mechanical properties, which were evaluated in an established manner. We found that by measurement of the MM the production parameters as well as the relative orientation of the fibers in space can be determined. Thus, the MM measurement is suitable as an alternative tool for non-contact, non-destructive determination of the production parameters and, thus, the degree of alignment of electrospun fiber scaffolds. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of the application of processing screws with a modified test segment in a corotating twin-screw extruder on selected properties of talc-filled polypropylene extrudate. The test segment was built of trilobe kneading elements and its design modifications refered to changing the distance between the kneading elements and the angle of positions of kneading elements that are relative to each other. The performed tests included the production of extrudate with various degrees of talc-filling using five design solutions of the test segment and then measurements of selected properties, such as tensile strength, elongation at maximum tensile stress, and melt flow rate. Structural studies using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were also carried out. The study includes not only the description of experimental results but also the determination of empirical models describing the dependence of the properties of the obtained extrudate on the conditions of the extrusion process and the design features of the test segment. The layered hydrated sodium salt-magadiite (MAG), which has special interpenetrating petals structure, was used as a functional filler to slowly self-assemble with sodium carboxy-methylcellulose (CMC), in order to prepare nacre-like nanocomposite film by solvent evaporation method. The structure of prepared nacre-like nanocomposite film was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis; whereas, it was indicated that CMC macromolecules were inserted between the layers of MAG to increase the layer spacing of MAG by forming an interpenetrating petals structure; in the meantime, the addition of MAG improved the thermal stability of CMC. The tensile strength of CMC/MAG was significantly improved compared with pure CMC. The tensile strength of CMC/MAG reached the maximum value at 1.71 MPa when the MAG content was 20%, to maintaining high transparency. Due to the high content of inorganic filler, the flame retarding performance and the thermal stability were also brilliant; hence, the great biocompatibility and excellent mechanical properties of the bionic nanocomposite films with the unique interpenetrating petals structure provided a great probability for these original composites to be widely applied in material research, such as tissue engineering in biomedical research.
