Until recently, recycling thermoset polyurethanes (PUs) was limited to degrading methods. The development of covalent adaptable networks (CANs), to which PUs can be assigned, has opened novel possibilities for actual recycling. Most efforts in this area have been directed toward inventing new materials that can benefit from CAN theory; presently, little or nothing has been applied to industrially producible materials. In this study, both an industrially available polyol (Sovermol780®) and isocyanate (Tolonate X FLO 100®) with percentages of bioderived components were employed, resulting in a potentially scalable and industrially producible material. The resultant network could be reworked up to three times, maintaining the crosslinked structure without significantly changing the thermal properties. Improvements in mechanical parameters were observed when comparing the pristine material to the material exposed to three rework processes, with gains of roughly 50% in elongation at break and 20% in tensile strength despite a 25% decrease in Young's modulus and crosslink density. Thus, it was demonstrated that theory may be profitably applied even to materials that are not designed including additional bonds but instead rely just on the dynamic urethane bond that is naturally present in the network. With the background of the fossil fuel energy crisis, the development of self-healing and recyclable polymer materials has become a research hotspot. In this work, a kind of cross-linking agent with pendent furan groups was first prepared and then used to produce the Polyurethane elastomer based on Diels–Alder chemistry (EPU–DA). In addition, in order to further enhance the mechanical properties of the elastomer, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were added into the Polyurethane system to prepare a series of composites with various contents of CNF (wt% = 0.1~0.7). Herein, the FTIR and DSC were used to confirm structure and thermal reversible character. The tensile test also indicated that the addition of CNF increased the mechanical properties compared to the pure Polyurethane elastomer. Due to their reversible DA covalent bonds, the elastomer and composites were recycled under high-temperature conditions, which extends Polyurethane elastomers' practical applications. Thermo-responsive, biocompatible polyurethane (PU) with shape memory properties is highly desirable for biomedical applications. An innovative approach to producing wound closure strips using shape memory polymers (SMPs) is of significant interest. In this work, PU composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) was synthesized using two-step polymerization. Palm oil (PO) was added to PU for enhancing the Young's modulus of the PU beyond the set criterion of 130 MPa. It was found that PU had the ability to crystallize at room temperature and the segments of individual PCL and BDO polyurethanes crystallized separately. The crystalline domains and hard segment of PU greatly affected the tensile properties. The reduction of crystalline domains by the addition of PO and deformation at the higher melting temperature of the crystalline PCL polyurethane phase improved the shape fixity and shape recovery ratios. The new irreversible phase, raised from the permanent deformation upon stretching at the between melting temperature of the crystalline PCL and BDO polyurethanes of 70 °C, resulted in a decrease in shape fixity ratio after the first thermomechanical stretching–recovering cycles. The 6935M Sprint Quattro Secure S and 6947M Sprint Quattro Secure are high voltage leads designed to administer a maximum of 40 joules of energy for terminating ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. Both leads utilize silicone insulation and a polyurethane outer coating. The inner coil is shielded with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tubing, while other conductors are enveloped in ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), contributing to the structural integrity and functionality of these leads. Polyurethane is a preferred material for the outer insulation of cardiac leads due to its flexibility and biocompatibility, while silicone rubber ensures chemical stability within the body, minimizing inflammatory or rejection responses. Thirteen implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) leads were obtained from the Wright State University Anatomical Gift Program. The as-received devices exhibited varied in vivo implantation durations ranging from less than a month to 89 months, with an average in vivo duration of 41 ± 27 months. Tests were conducted using the Test Resources Q series system, ensuring compliance with ASTM Standard D 1708-02a and ASTM Standard D 412-06a. During testing, a load was applied to the intact lead, with careful inspection for surface defects before each test. Results of load to failure, percentage elongation, percentage elongation at 5 N, ultimate tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity were calculated. The findings revealed no significant differences in these parameters across all in vivo exposure durations. The residual properties of these ICD leads demonstrated remarkable stability and performance over a wide range of in vivo exposure durations, with no statistically significant degradation or performance changes observed. Flexible sensors are prone to the problems of slow recovery rate and large residual strain in practical use. In this paper, a polyurethane functional composite with a gradient change in elastic modulus is proposed as a flexible sensor to meet the recovery rate and residual strain without affecting the motion. Different hard and soft segment ratios are used to synthesize a gradient polyurethane structure. The conductive percolation threshold was obtained between 45 wt% and 50 wt% of flake silver powder. Both gradient polyurethane and gradient polyurethane composites demonstrated that gradient materials can increase the recovery rate and reduce residual strain. The gradient polyurethane composites had a tensile strength of 3.26 MPa, an elastic modulus of 2.58 MPa, an elongation at break of 245%, a sensitivity coefficient of 1.20 at 0–25% deformation, a sensitivity coefficient of 11.38 at 25–75% deformation, a rate of recovery of 1.95 s at a time, and a resistance to fatigue (over 1000 cycles at a fixed strain of 20% showed a stable electrical response). The sensing performance under different cyclic strain frequencies was also investigated. The process has practical applications in the field of wearable skin motion and health monitoring. Polymer biocompositions of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) and linear polyurethanes (PU) with aromatic rings were produced by melt-blending at different P3HB/PU weight ratios (100/0, 95/5, 90/10, and 85/15). Polyurethanes have been prepared with 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and polyethylene glycols with molar masses of 400 g/mol (PU400), 1000g/mol (PU1000), and 1500 g/mol (PU1500). The compatibility and morphology of the obtained polymer blends were determined by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effect of the polyurethane content in the biocompositions on their thermal stability and mechanical properties was investigated and compared with those of the native P3HB. It was shown that increasing the PU content in P3HB-PU compositions to 10 wt.% leads to an improvement in the mentioned properties. The obtained results demonstrated that the thermal stability and mechanical properties of P3HB were improved, particularly in terms of increasing the degradation temperature, reducing hardness, and increasing impact strength. The best thermal and mechanical properties were shown by the P3HB-PU polymer compositions containing 10 wt.% of polyurethane modifiers, especially PU1000, which was also confirmed by the morphology analysis of these biocompositions. The presence of polyurethanes in the resulting polymer biocomposites decreases their glass transition temperatures, i.e., makes the materials more flexible. The resulting polymer biocompositions have suitable mechanical properties and thermal properties within the processing conditions for the predicted application as biodegradable, short-lived products for agriculture. Dielectric elastomers, such as thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs), are widely used as the dielectric layer, encapsulation layer, and substrate of flexible and stretchable devices. To construct capacitors and actuators that work stably upon deformation, it has become urgent to investigate the evolution of dielectricity under stress and strain. However, the lack of effective methods for estimating the dielectric constant of elastomers under strain poses a big challenge. This study reports a device for the in situ measurement of the dielectric constant of TPU under strain. It is found that upon stretching TPU to a strain of 400%, its dielectric constant decreases from 8.02 ± 0.01 to 2.88 ± 0.25 (at 1 MHz). In addition, combined Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, the X-ray scattering technique, and atomic force microscopy were utilized to characterize the evolution of the microstructure under strain. The investigation under tensile strain reveals a decreased density and average size of polarized hard domains, along with a tendency of the molecular chains to align in parallel with the tensile stress. Polyurethane (PU) is a type of polymer, which exists in various forms in the environment. Very few studies are available concerning the structure or enzymatic mechanism of the microbial community, which can degrade PU. Degradation of PU remains a difficult problem with respect to the environmental and biological disciplines. This study mainly focused on identifying the micro-organisms able to degrade polyurethane and confirming the degradation by performing a plate assay, Sturm test and scanning electron microscopy. Optimal culture conditions for maximum PU degradation were also analyzed through classical methods. A soil burial test was conducted by placing polyurethane films in the soil for one month, and the microbe growing on the surface of polyurethane films—with a maximum degradation of 55%—was isolated and identified as Aspergillus versicolor (ARF5). The culture medium was also optimized with different physical and chemical parameters for maximum PU degradation. Fluorinated polyurethane (FPU) is a new kind of polyurethane (PU) material with great applicational potential, which is attributed to its high bond energy C-F bonds. Its unique low surface energy, excellent thermal stability, and chemical stability have attracted considerable research attention. FPU with targeted performance can be precisely synthesized through designing fluorochemicals as hard segments, soft segments, or additives and changes to the production process to satisfy the needs of coatings, clothing textiles, and the aerospace and biomedical industries for materials that are hydrophobic and that are resistant to weathering, heat, and flames and that have good biocompatibility. Here, the synthesis, structure, properties, and applications of FPU are comprehensively reviewed. The aims of this research are to shed light on the design scheme, synthesis method, structure, and properties of FPU synthesized from different kinds of fluorochemicals and their applications in different fields and the prospects for the future development of FPU. Conventional paint spraying processes often use small molecule organic solvents and emit a large amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are highly toxic, flammable, and explosive. Alternatively, the spraying technology using supercritical CO2 (scCO2) as a solvent has attracted attention because of its ability to reduce VOC emissions, but the flow characteristics of coatings have not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, we numerically simulate the spraying process based on the actual process of scCO2 spraying polyurethane coatings by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The effects of inlet pressure and volume fraction of scCO2 on the fluid motion parameters inside the nozzle as well as the atomization effect of droplets outside the nozzle are investigated. The simulated results show that a fluid with a large volume fraction of scCO2 will obtain a smaller density, resulting in a larger velocity and a larger distance for the spray to effectively spray. Higher coating content and bigger inlet pressures will result in higher discrete phase model (DPM) concentrations, and thus a bigger inlet pressure should be used to make the droplets more uniform across the 30° spray range. Two polyurethanes (PUs) were similarly synthesized by reacting a cycloaliphatic isocyanate with 1,4-butanediol and two polyols of different nature (polyester, polycarbonate diol) with molecular weights of 1000 Da. Only the PU synthesized with polycarbonate diol polyol (YCD) showed intrinsic self-healing at 20 °C. For assessing the mechanism of intrinsic self-healing of YCD, a structural characterization by molecular weights determination, infrared and X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopies, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis was carried out. The experimental evidence concluded that the self-healing at 20 °C of YCD was due to dynamic non-covalent exchange interactions among the polycarbonate soft segments. Although epoxy resin has been extensively used in the field of wind turbine blades, polyurethane has attracted much attention in recent years, due to its potential value of better fatigue resistance, lower processing viscosity and higher strength than epoxy resin blades. Herein, we construct a dense cross-linking structure in polyurethane (PU) based on different amounts of hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) with low processing viscosity and excellent mechanical properties. By increasing the content of HPMA, the thermal stability of PU is enhanced, but the micro-morphology does not change significantly. When the content of HPMA is 50 g (in 200 g copolymer), the PU sample PH-50 exhibits a viscosity of 70 MPa·s and a gelation time of 120 min at 25 °C, which is sufficient to complete processes like pouring and filling. By post-curing the PH-50 at 80 °C for 2 h, the heat distortion temperature can reach 72 °C, indicating the increase of temperature resistance. The PU copolymers also have excellent mechanical and dynamic thermo-mechanical properties due to the cross-linking structure between PU chains and poly-HPMA chains. Additionally, the PU copolymer has excellent compatibility with various glass fiber fabrics (GFF), showing a good match in the vacuum infusion experiment and great properties in the mechanical test. By compounding PH-50 with GFF, the composite with high strength is easily prepared for a wind turbine blade in various positions. The tensile strengths of the composites are all over 1000 MPa in the 0° direction. In this study, a new epoxidized oil from Citrullus colocynthis seed oil (CCSO) was obtained for a potential application in the formulation of polyurethane coatings. Initially, the fatty acid composition of CCSO was determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Subsequently, the epoxidation of CCSO was performed with in situ generated peracetic acid, which was formed with hydrogen peroxide (30 wt.%) and glacial acetic acid and catalyzed with sulfuric acid. The reaction was continued at a molar ratio of 1.50:1.0 of hydrogen peroxide to double bond (H2O2:DB) for 6 h at a controlled temperature of 60 °C. The resulting epoxidized oil was then used to produce a bio-based polyol by hydroxylation. The molar ratio of epoxy groups to methanol and distilled water was maintained at 1:11:2, and the reaction was carried out for 2 h at a controlled temperature of 65 °C. The major functional groups of the epoxidized oil and its polyol were validated by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopies. A polyurethane (PU) coating was produced from the synthesized polyol and 3HDI isocyanurate, keeping the molar ratio of NCO:OH at 1:1. The resulting PU coating was then applied to glass and aluminum panels (Al 1001). After the film was cured, the properties of the PU coating were evaluated using various techniques including pencil hardness, pendulum hardness, adhesion, gloss, chemical resistance, and EIS tests. Optimizing the energy efficiency of hydraulic cylinder modern sealing systems requires, among other things, minimizing the developed friction forces. This can be achieved by manufacturing seals from polymer-based polytetrafluoroethylene-type materials (Virgin PTFE and filled PTFE) or from thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers. This paper presents a procedure for calculating and experimentally determining the friction forces developed in the coaxial sealing systems of hydraulic cylinders pistons. Three sealing systems made from different materials were tested under varying conditions of pressure and velocity on an experimental test stand set up by the authors. The paper concludes with data and recommendations for the selection of the optimum seal material in order to maximize energy efficiency. The search for innovative and sustainable solutions to improve the energy efficiency of the construction industry has been a hot topic for researchers due to the tremendous impact of insulator materials in the thermal comfort of buildings. In the present work, an innovative lightweight composite material with thermal insulation properties was developed, for the first time, by using cardoon particles and polyurethane. The formulation of the composite material was optimized in terms of cardoon fraction and the polyol/isocyanate ratio, to achieve the best compromise between internal bond (IB) strength and thickness swelling (TS). The best performing composite was PU75-CP45, with 45 wt% of cardoon particles and 75% of isocyanate, achieving an IB of 0.41 MPa and a TS of 5.3%. Regarding insulation properties, the PU75-CP45 composite material exhibits a promising performance when compared to conventional construction industry materials by tuning its thickness. Polymer materials are widely used in medicine due to their mechanical properties and biological inertness. When ion-plasma treatment is used on a polymer material, a carbonization process occurs in the surface nanolayer of the polymer sample. As a result, a surface carbonized nanolayer is formed, which has mechanical properties different from those of the substrate. This layer has good biocompatibility. The formation of a carbonized nanolayer on the surface of polymer implants makes it possible to reduce the body's reaction to a foreign body. Typically, to study the properties of a carbonized layer, flat polymer samples are used, which are treated with an ion flow perpendicular to the surface. But medical endoprostheses often have a curved surface, so ion-plasma treatment can occur at different angles to the surface. This paper presents the results of a study of the morphological and mechanical properties of a carbonized layer formed on a polyurethane surface. The dependence of these properties on the directional angle of the ion flow and its fluence has been established. To study the surface morphology and elastic properties, methods of atomic force microscopy and methods of elasticity theory were used. Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) represent a pioneering advance in polymer science, offering unprecedented versatility in materials design. Unlike conventional adhesives with irreversible bonds, CAN-based polyurethane adhesives have the unique ability to undergo chemical restructuring through reversible bonds. One of the strategies for incorporating these types of reactions in polyurethanes is by functionalisation with Diels–Alder (DA) adducts. By taking advantage of the reversible nature of the DA chemistry, the adhesive undergoes controlled crosslinking and decrosslinking processes, allowing for precise modulation of bond strength. This adaptability is critical in applications requiring reworkability or recyclability, as it allows for easy disassembly and reassembly of bonded components without compromising the integrity of the material. This study focuses on the sustainable synthesis and characterisation of a solvent-based polyurethane adhesive, obtained by functionalising a polyurethane prepolymer with DA diene and dienophiles. The characterisation of the adhesives was carried out using different experimental techniques: nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), Brookfield viscosity, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and T-peel strength testing of leather/adhesive/rubber joints to determine the adhesive properties, both before and after the application of external stimuli. The conversion of both the DA and retro-Diels–Alder (r-DA) reactions was confirmed by 1H-NMR. The adhesive properties were not altered by the functionalisation of the adhesive prepolymer, showing similar thermal resistance and good rheological and adhesive properties, even exceeding the most demanding technical requirements for upper-to-sole joints in footwear. After the application of an external thermal stimuli, the bonded materials separated without difficulty and without damage, thus facilitating their separation, recovery and recycling. Background: This study explores how different post-processing methods affect the mechanical properties and degree of conversion of 3d-printed polyurethane aligners made from Tera Harz TC-85 resin. Methods: Using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the degree of conversion of liquid resin and post-processed materials was analyzed. This investigation focused on the effects of various post-curing environments (nitrogen vs. air) and rinsing protocols (centrifuge, ethanol, isopropanol, and isopropanol + water). The assessed mechanical properties were flexural modulus and hardness. Results: The degree of conversion showed no significant variance across different groups, though the polymerization environment influenced the results, accounting for 24.0% of the variance. The flexural modulus varied considerably, depending on both the rinsing protocol and the polymerization environment. The standard protocol (centrifugation followed by nitrogen polymerization) exhibited the highest flexural modulus of 1881.22 MPa. Hardness testing revealed significant differences, with isopropanol treatments showing increased resistance to wear in comparison to the centrifuge and ethanol rinse treatments. Conclusions: This study conclusively demonstrates the adverse effects of oxygen on the polymerization process, underscoring the critical need for an oxygen-free environment to optimize material properties. A series of robust energetic polyurethane binders was developed by in situ grafting reactive spiranes to achieve the migration-resistant processing aid and compensate for the energy output. The reactive grafting spiranes (RGSs), bearing two highly ring-strained spiranes, were synthesized sequentially to provide a promising ring strain energy up to a maximum value of 290 kJ mol−1. The thermodynamic compatibility of the RGS with uncured glycidyl azido polymer (GAP) was studied quantitatively by analyzing the glass transition temperature of their blendings. The reactivity study of the catalyst-free click reaction with respect to spacer-dependent species was amplified by tracing the extent of the reaction and measuring the activation energy. The faster reactivity of propargyl species was evident from two experimental approaches, which were verified further by theoretical predictions. Interestingly, the energy gap difference in the frontier molecular orbitals agreed well with the difference in activation energy between the two types of spacer-dependent species. When it comes to grouting in coal mines, polyurethane (PU) is often utilized. However, it is of vital importance to consistently improve the mineral PU, considering the significant amount of environmental deterioration to which it is prone. Laboratory experiments were used to model various coal mine conditions. Additionally, a workable technique for PU strengthening using ultrasonic waves was proposed. Compression tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to describe the PU–gangue material's induration characteristics. The results showed that ultrasound has a positive impact on PU's mechanical strength. The final strength of the PU was significantly impacted by the size of the coal gangue particles, the amount of dust, and the amount of water. The induration made of gangue and PU with the same mass but differing particle sizes was noticeably different in its compressive strength. The strengthening mechanism showed that the average size of the rigid foam after the ultrasound treatment was smaller, and the 'honeycomb'-structured space in the inner section was more compact, resulting in the rigid PU foam having a higher compressive strength after ultrasound treatment. The inability of wounds to heal effectively through normal repair has become a burden that seriously affects socio-economic development and human health. The therapy of acute and chronic skin wounds still poses great clinical difficulty due to the lack of suitable functional wound dressings. It has been found that dressings made of polyurethane exhibit excellent and diverse biological properties, but lack the functionality of clinical needs, and most dressings are unable to dynamically adapt to microenvironmental changes during the healing process at different stages of chronic wounds. Therefore, the development of multifunctional polyurethane composite materials has become a hot topic of research. This review describes the changes in physicochemical and biological properties caused by the incorporation of different polymers and fillers into polyurethane dressings and describes their applications in wound repair and regeneration. We listed several polymers, mainly including natural-based polymers (e.g., collagen, chitosan, and hyaluronic acid), synthetic-based polymers (e.g., polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, and polyacrylamide), and some other active ingredients (e.g., LL37 peptide, platelet lysate, and exosomes). In addition to an introduction to the design and application of polyurethane-related dressings, we discuss the conversion and use of advanced functional dressings for applications, as well as future directions for development, providing reference for the development and new applications of novel polyurethane dressings. Composites of polyurethane and graphite and polyurethane and carbon nanofibers (PU/Graphite 0.5% and PU/CNF 1%) were synthesized and used as anodes in dual-compartment microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for municipal wastewater treatment; electrical energy generation and organic matter removal were assessed. The maximum power density, coulombic efficiency and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency in the MFCs packed with the PU/Graphite 0.5% and PU/CNF 1% composites were 232.32 mW/m3 and 90.78 mW/m3, 5.87 and 4.41%, and 51.38 and 68.62%, respectively. In addition, the internal resistance of the MFCs with the best bioelectrochemical performance (PU/Graphite 0.5%) was 1051.11 Ω. The results obtained in this study demonstrate the feasibility of using these types of materials in dual-compartment MFCs for wastewater treatment with electric power generation. Silicone rubber composites with good comprehensive properties modified with polyurethane were obtained through mixing and vulcanizing methods. Firstly, the polyurethane prepolymer with double bonds was prepared by polytetrahydrofuran glycol (PTMG, Mn = 1000), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The prepolymer was then added to the silicone rubber compounds to prepare silicone rubber composites, combining the excellent properties of polyurethane with the silicone rubber materials. The effects of polyurethane content on the mechanical properties, insulation, hydrophobicity, thermal stability, and flame retardancy of composites were studied in detail. The results showed that the silicone rubber composites not only have good hydrophobicity, thermal stability and flame retardant properties, but the addition of polyurethane significantly improves the tensile strength at room and low temperatures and the volume resistivity of the materials. The tensile strength increased by 32.5%, and the volume resistivity nearly doubled. A series of polyurethanes (PU) were synthesised via one-step polymerisation without a chain extender, using toluene diisocyanate as well as a variety of soft segments composed of different macrodiols. Poly(D,L-lactide) (PDLLA) and polycaprolactone diol (PCL) were synthesised as a polyester type polyols to obtain soft segments. The process of varying the molar ratio of newly synthesised PDLLA in soft segments has been confirmed as a powerful tool for fine-tuning the final properties of PU. Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy was used for evaluation of molecular structures of synthesised PDLLA polyol and final PU. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry was used to confirm the presumed structure of PU. The influence of soft segment composition on polyurethane thermal characteristics was examined using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The composition of soft segments had little impact on the thermal stability of PU materials, which is explained by the comparable structures of both polyester polyols. Wide-angle X-ray scattering was utilised to evaluate the effect of amorphous PDLLA on the degree of crystallinity of PCL in soft PU segments. It was discovered that not only did the PDLLA ratio in the soft segment have a substantial influence on the degree of microphase separation in the soft and hard segments, but it also influenced the crystallisation behaviour of the materials. Furthermore, the restriction of crystallisation of the PCL soft segment has been verified to be dependent on the hard segment concentration and the ratio of PDLLA/PCL polyols. The sample with pure PCL as the polyol component achieved the highest degree of crystallinity (34.8%). The results demonstrated that the composition of soft segments directly affected the properties of obtained polyurethane films. The increased demand for vascular grafts for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases has led to the search for novel biomaterials that can achieve the properties of the tissue. According to this, the investigation of polyurethanes has been a promising approach to overcome the present limitations. However, some biological properties remain to be overcome, such as thrombogenicity and hemocompatibility, among others. This paper aims to synthesize polyurethanes based on castor oil and castor oil transesterified with triethanolamine (TEA) and pentaerythritol (PE) and with the incorporation of 1% chitosan. Analysis of the wettability, enzymatic degradation, mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break), and thermal stability was performed. Along with the evaluation of the cytotoxicity against mouse fibroblast (L929) and human dermal fibroblast (HDFa) cells, the hemolysis rate and platelet adhesion were determined. The castor-oil-based polyurethanes with and without 1% chitosan posed hydrophobic surfaces and water absorptions of less than 2% and enzymatic degradation below 0.5%. Also, they were thermally stable until 300 °C, with tensile strength like cardiovascular tissues. The synthesized castor oil/chitosan polyurethanes are non-cytotoxic (cell viabilities above 80%) to L929 and HDFa cells and non-thrombogenic and non-hemolytic (less than 2%); therefore, they are suitable for cardiovascular applications. Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are currently one of the most attractive smart materials expected to replace traditional shape memory alloys and ceramics (SMAs and SMCs, respectively) in some fields because of their unique properties of high deformability, low density, easy processing, and low cost. As one of the most popular SMPs, shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) has received extensive attention in the fields of biomedicine and smart textiles due to its biocompatibility and adjustable thermal transition temperature. However, its laborious synthesis, limitation to thermal response, poor conductivity, and low modulus limit its wider application. In this work, biocompatible poly(ε-caprolactone) diol (PCL-2OH) is used as the soft segment, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) is used as the hard segment, and glycerol (GL) is used as the crosslinking agent to prepare thermoset SMPU with a thermal transition temperature close to body temperature for convenient medical applications. The effects of different soft-chain molecular weights and crosslinking densities on the SMPU's properties are studied. It is determined that the SMPU has the best comprehensive performance when the molar ratio of IPDI:PCL-2OH:GL is 2:1.5:0.33, which can trigger shape memory recovery at body temperature and maintain 450% recoverable strain. Polyurethane is widely used to toughen epoxy resins due to its excellent comprehensive properties and compatibility. However, some demerits of polyurethanes limit their applications, such as the harsh storage condition of isocyanate-terminated polyurethane (ITPU), the limited amount of ITPU in epoxy resin, and using solvents during the preparation of polyurethane-modified epoxy resins. To address these issues, in this study, we reported a facile and green approach for preparing epoxy-terminated polyurethane (EPU)-modified epoxy resins with different EPU contents. It was found that the toughness of the epoxy resin was significantly improved after the addition of EPU. When the EPU content was 30 wt%, the elongation at break and toughness were improved by 358.36% and 73.56%, respectively. In comparison, the toughening effect of EPU outperformed that of ITPU. Polyurethane foams are widely used in biomedical applications due to their desirable mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, the cytotoxicity of its raw materials can limit their use in certain applications. In this study, a group of open-cell polyurethane foams were investigated for their cytotoxic properties as a function of the isocyanate index, a critical parameter in the synthesis of polyurethanes. The foams were synthesized using a variety of isocyanate indices and characterized for their chemical structure and cytotoxicity. This study indicates that the isocyanate index highly influences the chemical structure of polyurethane foams, also causing changes in cytotoxicity. These findings have important implications for designing and using polyurethane foams as composite matrices in biomedical applications, as careful consideration of the isocyanate index is necessary to ensure biocompatibility. The development of damping and tire materials has led to a growing need to customize the dynamic viscoelasticity of polymers. In the case of polyurethane (PU), which possesses a designable molecular structure, the desired dynamic viscoelasticity can be achieved by carefully selecting flexible soft segments and employing chain extenders with diverse chemical structures. This process involves fine-tuning the molecular structure and optimizing the degree of micro-phase separation. It is worth noting that the temperature at which the loss peak occurs increases as the soft segment structure becomes more rigid. By incorporating soft segments with varying degrees of flexibility, the loss peak temperature can be adjusted within a broad range, from −50 °C to 14 °C. Furthermore, when the molecular structure of the chain extender becomes more regular, it enhances interaction between the soft and hard segments, leading to a higher degree of micro-phase separation. This phenomenon is evident from the increased percentage of hydrogen-bonding carbonyl, a lower loss peak temperature, and a higher modulus. By modifying the molecular weight of the chain extender, we can achieve precise control over the loss peak temperature, allowing us to regulate it within the range of −1 °C and 13 °C. Non-isocyanate Polyurethane (NIPU) has been known to result from a thermal-ring-opening reaction between bis-cyclic carbonate (BCC) compounds and polyamines. BCC can be obtained from carbon dioxide capture using an epoxidized compound. Microwave radiation has been found to be an alternative process to conventional heating for synthesizing NIPU on a laboratory scale. The microwave radiation process is far more efficient (>1000 times faster) than using a conventional heating reactor. Now, a flow tube reactor has been designed for a continuous and recirculating microwave radiation system for scaling up NIPU. Furthermore, the TOE (Turn Over Energy) of the microwave for a lab batch (24.61 g) reactor was 24.38 kJ/g. This decreased to 8.89 kJ/g with an increase in reaction size of up to 300 times with this new continuous microwave radiation system. This proves that synthesizing NIPU with this newly-designed continuous and recirculating microwave radiation process is not only a reliable energy-saving method, but is also convenient for scale-up, making it a green process. To study the rheological and aging properties of vegetable oil–based polyurethane (V-PU) modified asphalt, V-PU terminated with an –NCO group was synthesized from renewable castor oil, and liquefied MDI-100LL and 10–40 wt% V-PU modified asphalts were prepared. Temperature classification, multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR), and linear amplitude scanning (LAS) tests were carried out. The results showed that the modulus, the creep recovery rate (R), and the yield stress and yield strain of the V-PU modified asphalts significantly increased in the order: 0 wt% < 10 wt% < 20 wt% < 40 wt% < 30 wt%, while the phase angle and the unrecoverable creep compliance (Jnr) changed in the opposite order, and the high temperature grade of 30 wt% V-PU modified asphalt was 4 grades higher than that of the base asphalt, which indicated that the addition of V-PU enhanced the fatigue, permanent deformation, and recovery deformation resistance. The 30 wt% sample exhibited phase inversion had the best performance. Comprehensive FTIR, GPC, and fluorescence microscopy analyses showed that the molecular weight significantly increased and the V-PU molecules agglomerated after aging. The excess –NCO groups of V-PU prepolymer react with water in the air and the active hydrogen in the asphalt system and finally form a cross-linked three-dimensional network structure with the asphalt to improve performance. The solidification of chromium-contaminated soil using polyurethane (PU) was systematically investigated. The unconfined compression test was conducted to investigate the effects of the curing time, PU dosage and the content of chromium ions on the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of chromium-contaminated soil. The effect of the PU dosage on the pore structure was investigated using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the mechanism of strength change was revealed by combining the strength law with the pore structure development law. In addition, the ability of the PU to solidify the chromium-contaminated soil was studied by the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP). According to the above test results, the UCS and the ability of the PU to solidify the chromium ions increased with the increase in curing time. The NMR tests showed that with the increase in PU dosage, the porosity decreased and the soil became more compact, hence increasing the strength. When the chromium ion content was 2000 mg/kg and the PU dosage was 8%, the strength of the sample was 0.37 MPa after curing for 24 h, which met the requirement of 0.35 MPa set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. To give full play to the advantages of polyurethane as a binder, such as mixing at room temperature, short curing time, and high curing strength, polyurethane was used as the binder of a waste asphalt mixture, and the pavement performance of PCRM (Polyurethane Cold-Recycled Mixture) was analyzed. Firstly, the adhesion performance of polyurethane binder with new and old aggregates was evaluated using the adhesion test. Then, the mix proportion was designed according to the material characteristics, and the reasonable molding process, maintenance conditions, design indexes, and the optimal binder ratio were proposed. Secondly, the high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance, water stability, and compressive resilient modulus of the mixture were evaluated through laboratory tests. Finally, the pore structure and microscopic morphology of polyurethane cold-recycled mixture were analyzed by industrial CT (Computerized Tomography) scanning, and the failure mechanism of polyurethane cold-recycled mixture was revealed. The test results show that the adhesion between polyurethane and RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement) is good, and the splitting strength of the mixture increases greatly when the ratio of glue to stone reaches 9%. Polyurethane binder has low sensitivity to temperature and poor water stability. With the increase of RAP content, the high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance, and compressive resilient modulus of PCRM showed a decreasing trend. When the RAP content was less than 40%, the freeze–thaw splitting strength ratio of the mixture was improved. After the incorporation of RAP, the interface was more complex and there were many micron-scale holes, cracks, and other defects; after high-temperature immersion, the polyurethane binder appeared to show a certain degree of peeling at the holes of the RAP surface. The physical and chemical properties of tissue engineering scaffolds have considerable effects on the inflammatory response at the implant site in soft tissue repair. The development of inflammation-modulating polymer scaffolds for soft tissue repair is attracting increasing attention. In this study, in order to regulate the inflammatory response at the implant site, a series of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) scaffolds with different properties were synthesized using polyethylene glycol (PEG), polycaprolactone (PCL) and poly (lactic acid)–glycolic acid copolymers (PLGAs) with three lactic acid/glycolic acid (LA/GA) ratios as the soft segments. Then, scaffolds were obtained using freeze-drying. The WPU scaffolds exhibited a porous cellular structure, high porosity, proper mechanical properties for repairing nerve tissue and an adjustable degradation rate. In vitro cellular experiments showed that the degradation solution possessed high biocompatibility. The in vitro inflammatory response of C57BL/6 mouse brain microglia (immortalized) (BV2) cells demonstrated that the LA/GA ratio of the PLGA in WPU scaffolds can regulate the external inflammatory response by altering the secretion of IL-10 and TNF-α. Even the IL-10/TNF-α of PU5050 (3.64) reached 69 times that of the control group (0.053). The results of the PC12 culture on the scaffolds showed that the scaffolds had positive effects on the growth, proliferation and differentiation of nerve cells and could even promote the formation of synapses. Overall, these scaffolds, particularly the PU5050, indeed prevent BV2 cells from differentiating into a pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype, which makes them promising candidates for reducing the inflammatory response and repairing nerve tissue. Recently, polyurethanes (PURs) have become a very promising group of materials with considerable utilization and innovation potential. This work presents a comprehensive analysis of the changes in material properties important for PUR applications in the electrical industry due to the incorporation of magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles at different weight ratios. From the results of the investigations carried out, it is evident that the incorporation of MgO improves the volume (by up to +0.5 order of magnitude) and surface (+1 order of magnitude) resistivities, reduces the dielectric losses at higher temperatures (−62%), improves the thermal stability of the material, and slows the decomposition reaction of polyurethane at specific temperatures (+30 °C). Nanocoatings formed by various plasma and chemical methods on the surface of polymeric materials have unique properties. However, the applicability of polymeric materials with nanocoatings under specific temperature and mechanical conditions depends on the physical and mechanical properties of the coating. The determination of Young's modulus is a task of paramount importance since it is widely used in calculations of the stress–strain state of structural elements and structures in general. Small thicknesses of nanocoatings limit the choice of methods for determining the modulus of elasticity. In this paper, we propose a method for determining the Young's modulus for a carbonized layer formed on a polyurethane substrate. For its implementation, the results of uniaxial tensile tests were used. This approach made it possible to obtain patterns of change in the Young's modulus of the carbonized layer depending on the intensity of ion-plasma treatment. These regularities were compared with regularities of changes in the molecular structure of the surface layer caused by plasma treatment of different intensity. The comparison was made on the basis of correlation analysis. The high-quality reutilization of waste styrene–butadiene–styrene copolymer (SBS) modified asphalt mixtures is a difficult issue in the field of highways today, and the main reason is that conventional rejuvenation technology fails to achieve the effective rejuvenation of aged SBS in binder, causing significant deterioration in the high-temperature performance of the rejuvenated mixture. In view of this, this study proposed a physicochemical rejuvenation process using a reactive single-component polyurethane (PU) prepolymer as the repairing substance for structural reconstruction and aromatic oil (AO) as a common rejuvenator used to supplement the lost light fractions of asphalt molecules in aged SBSmB, according to the characteristics of oxidative degradation products of SBS. The joint rejuvenation of aged SBS modified bitumen (aSBSmB) by PU and AO was investigated based on Fourier transform infrared Spectroscopy, Brookfield rotational viscosity, linear amplitude sweep, and dynamic shear rheometer tests. The results show that 3 wt% PU can completely react with the oxidation degradation products of SBS and rebuild its structure, while AO mainly acted as an inert component to increase the content of aromatic components, thereby reasonably adjusting the compatibility of chemical components of aSBSmB. Compared with the PU reaction-rejuvenated binder, the 3 wt% PU/10 wt% AO rejuvenated binder had a lower high-temperature viscosity for better workability. The chemical reaction between PU and SBS degradation products dominated in the high-temperature stability of rejuvenated SBSmB and had a negative impact on its fatigue resistance, while the joint rejuvenation of 3 wt% PU and 10 wt% AO not only gave a better high-temperature property to aged SBSmB but could also have the capacity to improve its fatigue resistance. Compared to virgin SBSmB, PU/AO rejuvenated SBSmB has comparative low-temperature viscoelastic behavior characteristics and a much better resistance to medium-high-temperature elastic deformation. Incorporating thermally labile active pharmaceutical ingredients for manufacturing multifunctional polymeric medical devices is restricted due to their tendency to degrade in the hot melt extrusion process. In this study, the potential of sub- and near-critical carbon dioxide (CO2) as a reversible plasticiser was explored by injecting it into a twin-screw hot melt extrusion process of Pellethane thermoplastic polyurethane to decrease its melt process temperature. Its morphological, throughput, thermal, rheological, and mechanical performances were also evaluated. The resultant extrudates were characterised using scanning electron microscopy, parallel plate rotational rheometer, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and tensile testing. The process temperature decreased from 185 to 160 °C. The rheology indicated that the reduction in melt viscosity was from 690 Pa.s to 439 Pa.s (36%) and 414 Pa.s (40%) at 4.14 and 6.89 MPa, respectively. The tensile modulus in the elastomeric region is enhanced from 5.93 MPa, without CO2 to 7.71 MPa with CO2 at both 4.14 and 6.89 MPa. The results indicate that the employment of both sub- and near-critical CO2 as a processing aid is a viable addition to conventional hot melt extrusion and that they offer more opportunities for thermosensitive drugs to be more stable in the molten stream of Pellethane thermoplastic polyurethane. The present work describes the synthesis of new versatile polyurea (PU) and polyurethane (PUR) matrices, including different chain extenders, which facilitate the design of distinct, tunable properties, and high-performance derivatives. These polymers can be used for various defense and security applications, such as coatings for ballistic protection, CBRN protection, binders for energetic formulations, etc. Combining aliphatic and aromatic molecules in PU or PUR structures enables the synthesis of polymers with improved and controllable thermo-mechanical properties. Thus, for polyurea synthesis, we utilized two types of polymeric aliphatic diamines and three types of aromatic chain extenders (1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine, benzene-1,2-diamine, and 1,2-diphenylhydrazine). An analogous method was used to synthesize polyurethane films by employing one polymeric aliphatic polyol and three types of aromatic chain extenders (benzene-1,3-diol, benzene-1,4-diol, and benzene-1,2,3-triol). Subsequently, various analytic techniques (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy–attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), single cantilever dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), frequency-dependent shear modulus survey, tensile tests, water contact angle measurements, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX)) have been utilized to characterize the synthesized materials and to evaluate the influence of each chain extender on their final properties. Isosorbide is a bio-based renewable resource that has been utilized as a stiffness component in the synthesis of novel polymers. Modified isosorbide-based bis(2-hydroxyethyl)isosorbide (BHIS) has favorable structural features, such as fused bicyclic rings and a primary hydroxyl function with improved reactivity to polymerization when compared to isosorbide itself. Polyurethane series (PBH PU series) using polycarbonate diol (PCD) and bis(2-hydroxyethyl)isosorbide (BHIS) were polymerized through a simple, one-shot polymerization without a catalyst using various ratios of BHIS, PCD, and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). The synthesized BHIS and PUs were characterized using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and mechanical testing. To determine the feasibility of using these PUs as biomedical materials, we investigated the effects of their BHIS content on PBH PU series physical and mechanical properties. The PBH PU series has excellent elasticity, with a breaking strain ranging from 686.55 to 984.69% at a 33.26 to 63.87 MPa tensile stress. The material showed superb biocompatibility with its high adhesion and proliferation in the bone marrow cells. The development of reliable and effective functional materials that can be used in various technological fields and environmental conditions is one of the goals of modern nanotechnology. Heating elements' manufacturing requires understanding the laws of heat transfer under conditions of different supply voltages, as this expands the possibilities of such materials' application. Elastomers based on silicon-organic compounds and polyurethane modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were studied at various concentrations of Ni/MgO or Co-Mo/MgO and voltages (220, 250, and 300 V). It was found that an increase in voltage from 220 to 300 V leads to an initial increase in specific power on one-third followed by a subsequent decrease in a specific power when switched on again to 220 V (for −40 °C) of up to ~44%. In turn, for a polyurethane matrix, an increase in voltage to 300 V leads to an initial peak power value of ~15% and a decrease in power when switched on again by 220 V (for −40 °C) to ~36% (Ni/MgO -MWCNT). The conducted studies have shown that the use of a polyurethane matrix reduces power degradation (associated with voltage surges above 220 V) by 2.59% for Ni/MgO–based MWCNT and by 10.42% for Co-Mo/MgO. This is due to the better heat resistance of polyurethane and the structural features of the polymer and the MWCNT. The current studies allow us to take the next step in the development of functional materials for electric heating and demonstrate the safety of using heaters at a higher voltage of up to 300 V, which does not lead to their ignition, but only causes changes in electrophysical parameters. In this study, the effect of moisture on the elastic and failure properties of elastomeric polyurethane (EPU 40) 3D printed via Vat Photopolymerization was investigated. EPU 40 samples were printed, and uniaxial tensile tests were performed on Dry-fresh, Dry-aged (eight months aged), and after various times of being immersed in water (0–8 months). Elastic response, initial stiffness, failure strength, and failure elongation were analyzed. Besides, gravimetric analysis was performed to determine the increase in weight and thickness after water immersion. The elastic response was fitted by the Arruda-Boyce constitutive model. Results show that initial stiffness decreased after immersion (mean 6.8 MPa dry vs. 6.3 MPa immersed p-value 0.002). Contrary, the initial stiffness increased due to physical aging under a dry state from a mean 6.3 MPa to 6.9 MPa (p = 0.006). The same effect was observed for stiffness parameter G of the constitutive model, while the limit stretch parameter λ L was not affected by either aging. The 95% confidence intervals for strength and failure stretch were 5.27–9.48 MPa and 2.18–2.86, respectively, and were not affected either by immersion time or by physical aging. The median diffusion coefficient was 3.8 · 10 − 12   m ^ 2 / s . The immersion time has a significant effect only on stiffness, while oxidative aging has an inverse effect on the mechanical properties compared to water immersion. Methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) are soluble dyes with a high colour intensity even at low concentration and are hazardous to living organisms. The adsorption method is used in most wastewater plants for the removal of organic pollutants as it is cost-effective, has a high adsorption capacity, and good mechanical stabilities. In this study, a composite adsorbent was prepared by impregnating iron modified silica (FMS) onto polyurethane (PU) foam to produce an iron modified silica/polyurethane (FMS/PU) composite. The composite adsorbent was utilised in batch adsorption of the cationic dyes MB and MG. The effect of adsorption parameters such as the adsorbent load, pH, initial dye concentration, and contact time were discussed. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm were implemented to understand the adsorption mechanism for both dyes. It was found that the adsorption of MB and MG followed the pseudo-second order model. The Langmuir model showed a better fit than the Freundlich model for the adsorption of MB and MG, indicating that the adsorption occurred via the monolayer adsorption system. The maximum adsorption capacity of the FMS/PU obtained for MB was 31.7 mg/g, while for MG, it was 34.3 mg/g. The thermodynamic study revealed that the adsorption of MB and MG were exothermic and spontaneous at room temperature. In addition, the regeneration of FMS/PU was conducted to investigate the composite efficiency in adsorbing dyes for several cycles. The results showed that the FMS/PU composite could be regenerated up to four times when the regeneration efficiency dropped drastically to less than 20.0%. Lignin-based polyol was obtained via oxyalkylation reaction with propylene carbonate using eucalyptus kraft lignin isolated from the industrial cooking liquor by the Lignoboost® procedure. This lignin-based polyol (LBP) was used without purification in the preparation of polyurethane (PU) adhesives combined with polymeric 4,4′-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI). A series of adhesives were obtained by varying the NCO/OH ratio of PU counterparts (pMDI and LBPs) and their performance was evaluated by gluing wood pieces under predefined conditions. The adhesion properties of the novel PU adhesive were compared with those of a commercial PU adhesive (CPA). The occurrence and extent of curing reactions and changes in the polymeric network of PA were monitored by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and dynamic mechanical analysis. Although the lap shear strength and glass transition temperature of the lignin-based PU adhesives have increased steadily with the NCO/OH ratio ranging from 1.1–2.2, chemical aging resistance can be compromised when the NCO/OH is very low. It was found that the lignin-based PU adhesive with an NCO/OH ratio of 1.3 showed better chemical resistance and adhesion efficiency than CPA possibly because the NCO/OH in the latter is too high as revealed by FTIR spectroscopy. Despite some lower thermal stability and shorter gelation time of lignin-based PU than CPA, the former revealed great potential to reduce the use of petroleum-derived polyols and isocyanates with potential application in the furniture industry as wood bonding adhesive. Polyurethane (PU) foams are exceptionally versatile due to the nature of PU bond formation and the large variety of polymeric backbones and formulation components such as catalysts and surfactants. This versatility introduces a challenge, namely a near unlimited number of variables for formulating foams. In addition to this, PU foam development requires expert knowledge, not only in polyurethane chemistry but also in the art of evaluating the resulting foams. In this work, we demonstrate that a rational experimental design framework in conjunction with a design of experiments (DoE) approach reduces both the number of experiments required to understand the formulation space and reduces the need for tacit knowledge from a PU expert. We focus on an in-depth example where a catalyst and two surfactants of a known formulation are set as factors and foam physical properties are set as responses. An iterative DoE approach is used to generate a set of foams with substantially different cell morphology and hydrodynamic behaviour. We demonstrate that with 23 screening formulations and 16 final formulations, foam physical properties can be modelled from catalyst and surfactant loadings. This approach also allows for the exploration of relationships between the cell morphology of PU foam and its hydrodynamic behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is an urgent need for developing degradable polymeric systems based on bio-derived and sustainable materials. In recent years, polyurethanes derived from castor oil have emerged due to the large availability and sustainable characteristics of castor oil. However, these polymers are normally prepared through tedious and/or energy-intensive procedures or using high volatile and/or toxic reagents such as volatile isocyanates or epoxides. Furthermore, poor investigation has been carried out to design castor oil derived polyurethanes with degradable characteristics or thorough specifically sustainable synthetic procedures. Herein, castor oil-derived polyurethane with more than 90% biomass-derived carbon content and enhanced degradable features was prepared through a simple, eco-friendly (E-factor: 0.2), and scalable procedure, employing a recently developed commercially available biomass-derived (61% bio-based carbon content) low-volatile polymeric isocyanate. The novel material was compared with a castor oil derived-polyurethane prepared with a commercially available fossil-based isocyanate counterpart. The different castor oil-derived polyurethanes were investigated by means of water uptake, soil burial degradation, and disintegration tests in compost. Characterization analyses, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were carried out both prior to and after degradation tests. Grafting polyethylene glycol (PEG) onto a polymer's surface is widely used to improve biocompatibility by reducing protein and cell adhesion. Although PEG is considered to be bioinert, its incorporation onto biomaterials has shown to improve cell viability depending on the amount and molecular weight (MW) used. This phenomenon was studied here by grafting PEG of three MW onto polyurethane (PU) substrata at three molar concentrations to assess their effect on PU surface properties and on the viability of osteoblasts and fibroblasts. PEG formed a covering on the substrata which increased the hydrophilicity and surface energy of PUs. Among the results, it was observed that osteoblast viability increased for all MW and grafting densities of PEG employed compared with unmodified PU. However, fibroblast viability only increased at certain combinations of MW and grafting densities of PEG, suggesting an optimal level of these parameters. PEG grafting also promoted a more spread cell morphology than that exhibited by unmodified PU; nevertheless, cells became apoptotic-like as PEG MW and grafting density were increased. These effects on cells could be due to PEG affecting culture medium pH, which became more alkaline at higher MW and concentrations of PEG. Results support the hypothesis that surface energy of PU substrates can be tuned by controlling the MW and grafting density of PEG, but these parameters should be optimized to promote cell viability without inducing apoptotic-like behavior. Polyurethanes are gaining increasing interest for their use as structural components subjected to cyclic loads, such as leaf springs. Thermoset polyurethane (PUR) based technology offers some advantages, such as fatigue resistance, low viscosity, and fast curing. However, current PUR formulations present two major drawbacks: their petrochemical origin and high reactivity. The aim of this work was to develop a novel biobased PUR (BIO-PUR) with the required mechanical properties and processability for manufacturing structural composites by resin transfer moulding (RTM). For this purpose, a high functionality and high hydroxyl index castor-oil-based polyol was used combined with a biobased glycerol (BIO-Gly) to increase the crosslinking density and improve the final properties of the BIO-PUR. The viscosity and reactivity of the different systems were studied by means of rheology tests and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermal and mechanical properties were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and flexural tests. Furthermore, the RTM process of a representative part was simulated and validated through the manufacturing and testing of plates. The properties of the BIO-PUR resin systems were strongly influenced by the addition of biobased glycerol and its effect on the crosslinking density. The combination of a high functionality and hydroxyl index biobased polyol with the biobased glycerol resulted in a high-performance BIO-PUR with the required reactivity and final properties for structural applications. In this proof-of-concept study, we aim to produce a polyurethane (PU)-based composite that can reduce the amount of viable SARS-CoV-2 virus in contact with the surface of the polymeric film without further interventions such as manual cleaning. Current protocols for maintaining the hygiene of commonly used touchpoints (door handles, light switches, shop counters) typically rely on repeated washing with antimicrobial products. Since the start of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, frequent and costly surface sanitization by workers has become standard procedure in many public areas. Therefore, materials that can be retrofitted to touchpoints, yet inhibit pathogen growth for extended time periods are an important target. Herein, we design and synthesise the PU using a one-pot synthetic procedure on a multigram scale from commercial starting materials. The PU forms a robust composite thin film when loaded with 10 wt% silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The addition of AgNPs increases the ultimate tensile strength, modules of toughness and modulus of elasticity at the cost of a reduced elongation at break when compared to the pristine PU. Comparative biological testing was carried out by the addition of pseudotyped virus (PV) bearing the SARS-CoV-2 beta (B.1.351) VOC spike protein onto the film surfaces of either the pristine PU or the PU nanocomposite. After 24 h without further human intervention the nanocomposite reduced the amount of viable virus by 67% (p = 0.0012) compared to the pristine PU treated under the same conditions. The significance of this reduction in viable virus load caused by our nanocomposite is that PUs form the basis of many commercial paints and coatings. Therefore, we envisage that this work will provide the basis for further progress towards producing a retrofittable surface that can be applied to a wide variety of common touchpoints. Dressings made with polyurethanes have been found to exhibit good and varied biological properties that make them good candidates for this application. However, as has been seen, the wound-healing process is complex, which includes four different stages. So far, the design and evaluation of polyurethane for wound dressing has focused on achieving good properties (mechanical, physicochemical, and biological), but each of them separates from the others or even directed at only one of the stages of skin wound-healing. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review is to explore the applications of polyurethanes in wound dressings and to determine whether could be designed to cover more than one stage of skin wound-healing. The PRISMA guidelines were followed. The current research in this field does not consider each stage separately, and the design of polyurethane dressings is focused on covering all the stages of wound healing with a single material but is necessary to replace polyurethanes in short periods of time. Additionally, little emphasis is placed on the hemostasis stage and further characterization of polyurethanes is still needed to correlate mechanical and physicochemical properties with biological properties at each stage of the wound-healing. Current research demonstrates an effort to characterize the materials physiochemically and mechanically, but in terms of their biological properties, most of the literature is based on the performance of histological tests of explants morphologically probing the compromised tissues, which give an indication of the potential use of polyurethanes in the generation of wound-healing dressings.
