Highlights: IME technology is combined with conductive PET and LSR polymer materials to preform Utah arrays for BCI. The effects of three key factors on the nodal displacement were analyzed using the Kriging model. The heat transfer during injection molding was further analyzed by PDEs in order to determine the parameters more accurately. The allowable variation range of the wire diameter is obtained by the relation between the wire diameter and the current. Injection molding is an efficient and precise manufacturing technology that is widely used in the production of plastic products. In recent years, injection molding technology has made significant progress, especially with the combination of in-mold electronics (IME) technology, which makes it possible to embed electronic components directly into the surface of a product. IME technology improves the integration and performance of a product by embedding conductive materials and functional components in the mold. Brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) are a rapidly growing field of research that aims to capture, analyze, and feedback brain signals by directly connecting the brain to external devices. The Utah array, a high-density microelectrode array, has been widely used for the recording and transmission of brain signals. However, the traditional fabrication method of the Utah array suffers from high cost and low integration, which limits its promotion in practical applications. The lines that receive EEG signals are one of the key parts of a brain–computer interface system. The optimization of injection molding parameters is particularly important in order to effectively embed these lines into thin films and to ensure the precise displacement of the line nodes and the stability of signal transmission during the injection molding process. In this study, a method based on the Kriging prediction model and sparse regression partial differential equations (PDEs) is proposed to optimize the key parameters in the injection molding process. This method can effectively predict and control the displacement of nodes in the film, ensure the stability and reliability of the line during the injection process, and improve the accuracy of EEG signal transmission and system performance. The optimal injection parameters were finally obtained: a holding pressure of 525 MPa, a holding time of 50 s, and a melting temperature of 285 °C. Intumescent fire-retardant coatings, which feature thinner layers and good decorative effects while significantly reducing heat transfer and air dispersion capabilities, are highly attractive for fire safety applications due to their effective prevention of material combustion and protection of materials. Particularly, the worldwide demand for improved environmental protection requirements has given rise to the production of waterborne intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings, which are comparable to or provide more advantages than solvent-based intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings in terms of low cost, reduced odor, and minimal environmental and health hazards. However, there is still a lack of a comprehensive and in-depth overview of waterborne intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings. This review aims to systematically and comprehensively discuss the composition, the flame retardant and heat insulation mechanisms, and the practical applications of waterborne intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings. Finally, some key challenges associated with waterborne intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings are highlighted, following which future perspectives and opportunities are proposed. Polyimide (PI) is widely used in aerospace applications due to its excellent properties. However, the high concentration of atomic oxygen (AO) in low-earth orbit (LEO) significantly degrades its performance. This study employs reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to analyze the AO erosion resistance of fluorinated polyimide (FPI) and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) composite polyimide models. The 35 ps simulation results indicate that the PI/POSS composite exhibits the best protective performance. The protection mechanism involves the formation of an SiO2 carbonized layer that prevents the transmission of AO and heat to the polyimide matrix, resulting in a normalized mass of 84.1% after erosion. The FPI model shows the second-best protective effect, where the introduction of -CF3 groups enhances the thermal stability of the polyimide matrix, resulting in a normalized mass of 80.7% after erosion. This study explores the protective effects and mechanisms of different polyimide protection methods at the molecular level, providing new insights for the design of AO erosion protection systems. Recently, clothing development 3D printing and the evaluation of its physical characteristics have been explored. However, few studies have tackled thermal comfort, which is a major contributor to the wearers' comfort. Therefore, this study was designed to suggest effective materials and hole sizes for clothing obtained by 3D printing to maintain a comfortable clothing environment. In particular, two main variables, namely five different materials and three-hole sizes, were analyzed. All samples were placed on a hot plate (36 °C), and their surface temperature and humidity were measured for 10 min. The samples with only thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) achieved the largest temperature change of 3.2~4.8 °C, whereas those with ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam exhibited the lowest temperature change of −0.1~2.0 °C. Similarly, the samples with only TPU showed the greatest humidity change of −0.7~−5.5%RH. Moreover, the hole size had a larger effect on humidity change than material type. The samples with large holes achieved the largest humidity change of −4.4%RH, whereas the samples without holes had the smallest humidity change of −1.5%RH after 10 min (p < 0.001). Ablative composites serve as sacrificial materials, protecting underlying materials from high-temperature environments by endothermic reactions. These materials undergo various phenomena, including thermal degradation, pyrolysis, gas generation, char formation, erosion, gas flow, and different modes of heat transfer (such as conduction, convection, and radiation), all stemming from these endothermic reactions. These phenomena synergize to form a protective layer over the underlying materials. Carbon, with its superb mechanical properties and various available forms, is highlighted, alongside phenolics known for good adhesion and fabric ability and elastomers valued for flexibility and resilience. This study focuses on recent advancements in carbon-and-phenolic and carbon-and-elastomeric composites, considering factors such as erosion speed; high-temperature resistance; tensile, bending, and compressive strength; fiber–matrix interaction; and char formation. Various authors' calculations regarding the percentage reduction in linear ablation rate (LAR) and mass ablation rate (MAR) are discussed. As a transmission medium and heating energy, microwave is widely favored due to its high efficiency, strong selectivity, and easy control. Here, the effects of different heating methods (conventional thermal induction (CI) and microwave induction (MI)) on the polymerization rate of polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) were investigated. Compared with CI, MI significantly boosted the polymerization rate (by approximately 51 times) and markedly decreased the activation energy (Ea), from 46.83 kJ mol−1 to 35.07 kJ mol−1. The polar of the monomers and initiators in the PCE synthesis contributes to varying permittivities and loss factors under the microwave field, which are influenced by their concentration and reaction temperature. The insights gained from the microwave thermal effects and the micro-kinetics of the PCE polymerization system are able to propose theoretical underpinnings for the industrial-scale application of microwave induction polymerization, potentially steering the synthesis of polymer materials towards a more efficient and cleaner process. The traditional curing methods for thermosetting resins are energy-inefficient and environmentally unfriendly. Frontal polymerization (FP) is a self-sustaining process relying on the exothermic heat of polymerization. During FP, the external energy input (such as UV light input or heating) is only required at the initial stage to trigger a localized reaction front. FP is regarded as the rapid and energy-efficient manufacturing of polymers. The precise control of FP is essential for several manufacturing technologies, such as 3D printing, depending on the materials and the coupling of thermal transfer and polymerization. In this review, recent progress on the materials, modeling, and application of FP for thermosetting resins are presented. First, the effects of resin formulations and mixed fillers on FP behavior are discussed. Then, the basic mathematical model and reaction-thermal transfer model of FP are introduced. After that, recent developments in FP-based manufacturing applications are introduced in detail. Finally, this review outlines a roadmap for future research in this field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emergent heat transfer and thermal management applications require polymer composites with enhanced thermal conductivity (κ). Composites filled with non-spherical fillers, such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and Graphite (Gr), suffer from processing-induced filler orientations, resulting in anisotropic κ, commonly low in the through-plane direction. Here, the effects of extrusion and compression molding-induced orientations on κ of hBN- and Gr-filled polyethylene composites were investigated. The effect of extrusion on the hBN orientation was studied using dies of various shapes. The shaped extrudates exhibited hBN orientations parallel to the extrusion flow direction, which prompted additional hBN orientation during compression molding. κ of the composites produced with shaped extrudates varied from 0.95 to 1.67 W m−1 K−1. Pelletizing and crushing the extrudates improved κ, by exploiting and eliminating the effect of extrusion-induced hBN orientations. Gr-filled composites showed better κ than hBN composites due to the higher intrinsic conductivity and bigger particle sizes. A maximum κ of 5.1 and 11.8 W m−1 K−1 was achieved in composites with oriented hBN and Gr through a thin rectangular die and stacking the sheets to fabricate composites with highly oriented fillers. The right choice of polymeric materials plays a vital role in the successful design and manufacture of flexible fluidic systems, as well as heat transfer devices such as pulsating heat pipes. The decision to choose an acceptable polymeric material entails a variety of evaluation criteria because there are numerous competing materials available today, each with its own properties, applications, benefits, and drawbacks. In this study, a comparative hybrid multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model is proposed for evaluating suitable polymeric materials for the fabrication of flexible pulsating heat pipes. The decision model consists of fourteen evaluation criteria and twelve alternative materials. For this purpose, three different hybrid MCDM methods were applied to solve the material selection problems (i.e., AHP-GRA, AHP-CoCoSo, and AHP-VIKOR). According to the results obtained, PTFE, PE, and PP showed promising properties. In addition, Spearman's rank correlation analysis was performed, and the hybrid methods used produced consistent rankings with each other. By applying MCDM methods, it was concluded that PTFE is the most suitable material to be preferred for manufacturing flexible pulsating heat pipes. In addition to this result, PE and PP are among the best alternatives that can be recommended after PTFE. The study supports the use of MCDM techniques to rank material choices and enhance the selection procedure. With the increase in the popularity of wearable and integrated electronics, a proper way to manufacture electronics on textiles is needed. This study aims to analyze the effect of different parameters of the heat transfer process on the electrical and mechanical properties of flexible electronics made on textiles, presenting it as a viable method of producing such electronics. Wires made from different composites based on silver microparticles and an insulating layer were screen-printed on a release film. Then, they were transferred onto a polyester cloth using heat transfer with different parameters. Research showed that different heat transfer parameters could influence the electrical properties of screen-printed wires, changing their resistance between −15% and +150%, making it imperative to adjust those properties depending on the materials used. Changes in the settings of heat transfer also influence mechanical properties, increasing adhesion between layers at higher temperatures. Membrane distillation (MD) is a thermal-based membrane operation with high potential for use in the treatment of aqueous streams. In this study, the linear relationship between the permeate flux and the bulk feed temperature for different electrospun polystyrene membranes is discussed. The dynamics of combined heat and mass transfer mechanisms across different membrane porosities of 77%, 89%, and 94%, each with different thicknesses, are examined. The main results for the effect of porosity with respect to the thermal efficiency and evaporation efficiency of the DCMD system are reported for electrospun polystyrene membranes. A 14.6% increase in thermal efficiency was noted for a 15% increase in membrane porosity. Meanwhile, a 15.6% rise in porosity resulted in a 5% increase in evaporation efficiency. A mathematical validation along with computational predictions is presented and interlinked with the maximum thermal and evaporation efficiencies for the surface membrane temperatures at the feed and temperature boundary regions. This work helps to further understand the interlinked correlations of the surface membrane temperatures at the feed and temperature boundary regions with respect to the change in membrane porosity. Light guiding is used to direct light from an emitting source to a different location. It is frequently realized through a clad–core structure with a difference in the refractive index of the materials. This paper explores the possibility of combining a fluoropolymer (THV) film of low refractive index, serving as a cladding layer, with a polycarbonate (PC) core, via injection molding. Pristine THV lacks adherence to the PC. However, when treated with O 2 plasma prior to overmolding, bonding can be established that was quantified in peel tests. The effect of this surface treatment was further investigated by adjusting the plasma treatment duration and time to overmolding. Furthermore, parameter studies comprising the four molding parameters, namely packing pressure, injection speed, melt temperature, and mold temperature, were performed. Numerical injection molding simulations assessed the prevailing temperatures at the PC–THV boundary. Consequently, the temperature–time integral could be calculated and linked with the measured peel strengths by fitting a proportionality constant. While the plasma treatment duration showed minor influence, the activation diminished with time, halving the measured peel loads within 24 h. The adhesion was experimentally found to increase with a lower packing pressure, faster injection speed, and higher melt and mold temperature. Those same molding relations influencing the peel loads were also found with the temperature–time integral when scaled by the proportionality constant in the simulations ( R 2 = 85 % ). Apparently, adhesion is added by molding settings which promote higher interface temperatures that prevail for longer. Hereby, the faster injection speed increases the melt temperature through shear heating. A higher packing pressure, in contrast, presumably increases the heat transfer at the PC–THV interface, accelerating the cooling. The use of agricultural biomass composites as new construction and building materials has grown rapidly in recent decades. Considering that energy consumption is one of the most important factors in production, the aim of this work is to examine how heat transfer is affected at various ratios and combinations of three-layer tea oil camellia shell (TOCS) based particleboard with the purpose of creating a mat-forming structure, which has the best physical and mechanical properties for furniture and construction use in a dry environment and consumes the least amount of energy. Additionally, it investigated how raw materials type affects the curing process of polymeric methylene diisocyanate (pMDI) using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). According to the obtained data, the centerline temperature could reach a maximum of 125 °C after 3 min regardless of the materials or combinations, while the pMDI curing time was 100–110 °C. The results demonstrated that efficient heat transfer could help resin polymerization and improve panel properties. The effect of raw materials on the curing behavior of resin indicated that TOCS particles somehow caused more heat reactions at the curing point. It appeared that particleboard with a ratio of 40% commercial wood particles in the surface layers and 50% TOCS particles (mesh size: −3 + 14) in the core layer with a modulus of rupture (MOR) of 11.29 N/mm2 and internal bonding (IB) of 0.78 N/mm2 has the best properties and met EN 312: 2010 standard requirements for particleboard P2. Building shape-stable phase change materials (PCMs) are crucial for their practical applications. Particularly, it is vital to utilize renewable/recyclable biomass media as the support material of form-stable PCMs. In this review article, we summarized the recent developments for building form-stable PCMs consisting of wood as a supporting material, either carbonized wood or wood composites. Moreover, the electrothermal conversion and photothermal conversion of form-stable PCMs based on carbonized wood are also demonstrated. In addition, the current technical problems and future research developments of wood-based PCMs are discussed, especially the leakage problem of PCMs during the phase change transition process. Thermal transport simulations were performed to investigate the important factors affecting the thermal conductivity based on the structure of semi-crystalline polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and the addition of boron nitride (BN) sheets. The molecular-level structural analysis facilitated the prediction of the thermal conductivity of the optimal structure of PEEK reflecting the best parameter value of the length of amorphous chains, and the ratio of linkage conformations, such as loops, tails, and bridges. It was found that the long heat transfer paths of polymer chains were induced by the addition of BN sheets, which led to the improvement of the thermal conductivities of the PEEK/BN composites. In addition, the convergence of the thermal conductivities of the PEEK/BN composites in relation to BN sheet size was verified by the disconnection of the heat transfer path due to aggregation of the BN sheets. As flexible electronic technologies rapidly developed with a requirement for multifunction, miniaturization, and high power density, effective thermal management has become an increasingly important issue. The oscillating heat pipe, as a promising technology, was used to dissipate high heat fluxes and had a wide range of applications. In this paper, we reported the fabrication and heat transfer performance evaluation of a polymer-based flexible oscillating heat pipe (FOHP) prepared using 3D printing technology. The 3D-printed inner surface presented excellent wettability to the working fluid, which was beneficial for the evaporation of the working fluid. Ethanol was selected as the working fluid, and the influence of the filling ratios range of 30–60% on heat transfer performance was analyzed. It was found that a 3D-printed FOHP with a filling ratio of 40% presented the best heat transfer performance with the lowest thermal resistance, and the fabricated heat pipes could be easily bent from 0° to 90°. With the best filling ratio, the thermal resistance of the FOHPs increased with larger bending angles. In addition, the 3D-printed FOHP was successfully applied for the thermal management of flexible printed circuits, and the results showed that the temperature of flexible printed circuits was kept within 72 °C, and its service life was guaranteed. Owing to the fact that heat transfer during the thermally induced phase separation process is limited, a quench rate is inevitably entailed, which leads to the existence of temporal and spatial variations in temperature. Hence, it is of great importance to take into account the nonisothermality during the phase separation process, especially in high viscosity polymer solutions. In this study, the influence of conductive heat transfer on the morphology formation during the thermally induced phase separation process was investigated theoretically in terms of quench depth, boundary conditions, and enthalpy of demixing to elucidate the interaction between temperature and concentration through incorporating the nonlinear Cahn-Hilliard equation and the Fourier heat transfer equation in two dimensions. The Flory-Huggins free energy theory for the thermodynamics of phase separation, slow mode theory, and Rouse law for polymer diffusion without entanglements were taken into account in the model development. The simulation results indicated a strong interaction between heat transfer and phase separation, which impacted the morphology formation significantly. Results confirmed that quench depth had an indispensable impact on phase separation in terms of higher characteristic frequency by increasing the driving force for heat transfer. Applying quench from various boundaries led to a difference in the quench rate due to the high viscosity of the polymer solution. This led to a gradation in pore size and anisotropic morphology formation. The degree and direction of anisotropy depended on quench depth and rate, quench time, heat conduction rate inside the solution, solution viscosity, temperature evolution, and the enthalpy of demixing. It was also verified that the influence of enthalpy of demixing on phase separation could not be neglected as it increased the solution temperature and led to phase separation being accomplished at a higher temperature than the initial quench temperature. Three-dimensional simulations of laminar flame propagating downwards the vertical surface of a rigid polyurethane slab heated by a radiative panel are presented and compared with the measurement data. The gas-phase model (ANSYS Fluent) allows for finite-rate volatile oxidation, soot formation and oxidation, emission, transfer, and absorption of thermal radiation. The solid-phase model Pyropolis considers heat transfer across the material layer and generation of combustible volatiles in thermal decomposition of the material. Kinetic model of material decomposition is derived to obey the microscale combustion calorimetry data for different heating rates. Transient behavior of propagating flame and pyrolysis zone, as well as spatial distributions of heat flux components, temperature, and mass burning rates over the specimen surface are examined. Variation of the thermal properties of the material during its thermal decomposition, as well as the specimen surface emissivity and reradiation are shown to be the important issues strongly affecting model predictions. Two distinct modes of counterflow flame spread, thermal and kinetic, are identified. In the thermal mode corresponding to fast chemistry in the gaseous flame, the flame propagation velocity is governed by the heating rate of the combustible material ahead of the flame front. Alternatively, in the kinetic mode, it is limited by the burning velocity of the volatile-air mixture forming ahead of the flame front. A firefighter in the wildland fields spends an average of 8 to 16 h during which he encounters enormous physical effort and very demanding outdoor conditions of high temperatures. Research shows that the most common injuries are due to the occurrence of heat stress, and not due to lack of protection against burns. Therefore, for this very specific field of firefighting, it is necessary to provide clothing that will, in addition to adequate flame protection, provide good comfort properties such as lightweight suits, good porosity and breathability, so that gaseous sweat and heat generated by body heating can be released into the environment. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of structural parameters of multi-weft woven fabrics on two mutually contradictory properties—breathability and thermal protection. When designing fabrics, the goal was to produce a structure with a high proportion of volume pores, which, regardless of the increased volume of the fabric, insure the fabric mass would be acceptably small. Volume pores in the fabric have two roles—as a heat insulator and as an inhibitor of the breathability of the material. The analysis of the obtained results showed that the thickness and mass of the fabric have a greater influence on the water vapor resistance, while the heat transmission property is more affected by the thickness, porosity and fiber content. Modern 3D printed components are finding applications in dynamic structures. These structures are often subject to dynamic loadings. To date, research has mostly focused on investigating the mechanical properties of these 3D printed structures with minimum attention paid to their modal analysis. This work is focused on performing experimental modal analysis of 3D printed structures. The results show that the adhesion type has the most significant impact on the vibration response and parameters obtained from the modal analysis. The average dynamic modulus, natural frequency, and damping coefficient increased by approximately 12.5%, 5.5%, and 36%, respectively, for the specimens printed using skirt adhesion compared to those printed using raft adhesion. SEM analysis suggests that the 3D printed specimens with skirt adhesion yielded flattened layers, while raft adhesion resulted in rounded layers. The flattened layers of the specimens with skirt adhesion are likely an indication of an enhanced heat transfer between the 3D printer bed and the specimen. The printed specimens with skirt adhesion are in direct contact with the printer bed during the printing process. This enhances the heat transfer between the specimen and the printer bed, causing the layers to flatten out. The enhanced heat transfer yields a better inter-layer diffusion, resulting in improved physical bonding at the layers' interface. The improved bonding yields higher stiffnesses and natural frequencies. For the specimens with skirt adhesion, the improved heat transfer process is also likely responsible for the enhanced damping properties. Polymers are widely used in our daily life; however, most of them are highly flammable. Once modified with flame retardants (FRs), polymers always have deteriorative properties in mechanical strength aspects. As a countermeasure, a novel unified phosphorus and nitrogen-containing organic nano-layered flame retardant (BA-MA) was synthesized by the assembly of biphenyl-4,4′-diphosphonic acid (BA) and melamine (MA), which was used as an additive flame retardant for polystyrene (PS) resin. The chemical structure and morphology of BA-MA were characterized, and a possible growth mechanism of the nanolayered structure was presented in detail. The resulting BA-MA with a thickness of about 60 nm can be uniformly dispersed in the PS resin, thus maintaining the mechanical properties of the material. Remarkably, under only 1 wt% loading of BA-MA, the flammability of PS can be largely reduced with a 68% reduction in the peak heat release rate. Additionally, the smoke release was also significantly inhibited. The research on flame retardant mechanisms shows that BA-MA mainly produces incombustible gas to dilute the concentration of combustibles and promote the formation of aromatic carbon layers to isolate oxygen transmission and heat transfer. This study has compared different methods to predict the simultaneous effects of conductive and radiative heat transfer in a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) sample. PMMA is a type of polymer utilized in various sensors and actuator devices. One-dimensional combined heat transfer is considered in numerical analysis. Computer implementation was obtained for the numerical solution of the governing equation with the implicit finite difference method in the case of discretization. Kirchhoff transformation was used to obtain data from a non-linear equation of conductive heat transfer by considering monochromatic radiation intensity and temperature conditions applied to the PMMA sample boundaries. For the deep neural network (DNN) method, the novel long short-term memory (LSTM) method was introduced to find accurate results in the least processing time compared to the numerical method. A recent study derived the combined heat transfer and temperature profiles for the PMMA sample. Furthermore, the transient temperature profile was validated by another study. A comparison proves the perfect agreement. It shows the temperature gradient in the primary positions, which provides a spectral amount of conductive heat transfer from the PMMA sample. It is more straightforward when they are compared with the novel DNN method. Results demonstrate that this artificial intelligence method is accurate and fast in predicting problems. By analyzing the results from the numerical solution, it can be understood that the conductive and radiative heat flux are similar in the case of gradient behavior, but the amount is also twice as high approximately. Hence, total heat flux has a constant value in an approximated steady-state condition. A better understanding of heat transfer through materials used for 3D-printed parts could lead to an extension and an optimization of their use. A topic of interest could be analyzing temperature variation in these materials during cooling processes. Experimental research and equipment were designed to obtain additional information on the surface temperature decrease when the opposite wall surface is exposed to a freezing temperature. Experimental tests were performed on samples made of polylactic acid (PLA) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). An experimental Taguchi L8 program was used, with seven independent variables at two levels of variation. The experimental data analysis with specialized software based on the least-squares method identified a mathematical model of first-degree polynomial type. The coefficients for each input factor involved provide information on the magnitude and trend of the considered output parameter when the input factors' values change. It was found that the thickness of the 3D printing layer, the thickness of the test sample, and the 3D printing speed are the main factors that affect the temperature decrease rate. Crystalline morphology and structure of nylon 4 9 have been studied by means of optical and transmission electron microscopies, and X-ray diffraction. Rhombic crystals were characteristic of crystallization from glycerin dilute solutions, although the final morphology was dependent on the crystallization temperature. In any case, a single electron diffraction pattern was always obtained, being characteristic a 2 mm symmetry and reflections at spacings that were indicative of a projected rectangular unit cell with hydrogen bonds established along two planar directions (i.e., the diagonals of the unit cell), as it was determined from related polyamides. Crystallization from the melt gave rise to negative birefringent spherulites with a morphology (axialitic, speckled or ringed) that was dependent on the crystallization temperature. Kinetic analysis indicated that melt crystallization took place according to two growth mechanisms (Regimes II and III), which reflect distinct secondary nucleation rates. A complex polymorphic behavior on heating and cooling processes was evidenced by real time synchrotron experiments, being determined an intermediate crystalline structure as well as the typical pseudohexagonal arrangement associated to the Brill transition. Polymorphic transitions were highly dependent on the initial crystalline structure, being enhanced the structural transition from the low temperature structure to the intermediate one when traces of the latter were initially present. Most of the pore-scale imaging and simulations of non-Newtonian fluid are based on the simplifying geometry of network modeling and overlook the fluid rheology and heat transfer. In the present paper, we developed a non-isothermal and non-Newtonian numerical model of the flow properties at pore-scale by simulation of the 3D micro-CT images using a Finite Volume Method (FVM). The numerical model is based on the resolution of the momentum and energy conservation equations. Owing to an adaptive mesh generation technique and appropriate boundary conditions, rock permeability and mobility are accurately computed. A temperature and concentration-dependent power-law viscosity model in line with the experimental measurement of the fluid rheology is adopted. The model is first applied at isothermal condition to 2 benchmark samples, namely Fontainebleau sandstone and Grosmont carbonate, and is found to be in good agreement with the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Finally, at non-isothermal conditions, an effective mobility is introduced that enables to perform a numerical sensitivity study to fluid rheology, heat transfer, and operating conditions. While the mobility seems to evolve linearly with polymer concentration in agreement with a derived theoretical model, the effect of the temperature seems negligible by comparison. However, a sharp contrast is found between carbonate and sandstone under the effect of a constant temperature gradient. An optimized thermal conductivity model of spherical particle-filled polymer composites considering the influence of interface layer was established based on the classic series and parallel models. ANSYS software was used to simulate the thermal transfer process. Meanwhile, linear low-density polyethylene/alumina (LLDPE/Al2O3) composites with different volume fractions and Al2O3 particle sizes were prepared with the continuous mixer, and the effects of Al2O3 particle size and volume fraction on the thermal conductivity of the composites were discussed. Finally, the test result of the thermal conductivity was analyzed and compared with ANSYS simulations and the model prediction. The results proved that the thermal conductivity model considering the influence of the interface layer could predict the thermal conductivity of LLDPE/Al2O3 composites more precisely. Conformal cooling channels (CCCs) are widely used in the plastic injection molding process to improve the product quality and operational performance. Tooling that incorporates CCCs can be fabricated through metal additive manufacturing (MAM). The present work focuses on the MAM of a plastic injection mold insert with different CCC types that are circular, serpentine, and tapered channels with/without body-centered cubic (BCC) lattices. The entire manufacturing process of the mold insert is explained from the design step to the final printing step including the computational thermal & mechanical simulations, performance assessments, and multiobjective optimization. Compared to the traditional channels, conformal cooling channels achieved up to 62.9% better cooling performance with a better thermal uniformity on the mold surface. The optimum mold geometry is decided using the multiobjective optimization procedure according to the multiple objectives of cooling time, temperature non-uniformity, and pressure drop in the channel. Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) method is used for manufacturing the molds and the quality of the printed molds are analyzed with the X-ray Computed Tomography (X-ray CT) technique. The errors between the design and the printed parameters are less than 5% for the circular and tapered channels while the maximum deviation of the strut diameters of the BCC is 0.06 mm. In recent years, polymer engineering, at the molecular level, has proven to be an effective strategy to modulate thermal conductivity. Polymers have great applicability in the food packaging industry, in which transparency, lightness, flexibility, and biodegradability are highly desirable characteristics. In this work, a possible manner to adjust the thermal conductivity in cassava starch biopolymer films is presented. Our approach is based on modifying the starch molecular structure through the addition of borax, which has been previously used as an intermolecular bond reinforcer. We found that the thermal conductivity increases linearly with borax content. This effect is related to the crosslinking effect that allows the principal biopolymer chains to be brought closer together, generating an improved interconnected network favoring heat transfer. The highest value of the thermal conductivity is reached at a volume fraction of 1.40% of borax added. Our analyses indicate that the heat transport improves as borax concentration increases, while for borax volume fractions above 1.40%, heat carriers scattering phenomena induce a decrement in thermal conductivity. A one-dimensional heat transfer model was developed to simulate the heat transfer of oriented natural fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites during hot-pressing and provide guidance for determining appropriate hot-pressing parameters. The apparent heat capacity of thermoplastics due to the heat of fusion was included in the model, and the model was experimentally verified by monitoring the internal temperature during the hot-pressing process of oriented sorghum fiber reinforced high-density polyethylene (HDPE) film composites (OFPCs). The results showed that the apparent heat capacity of HDPE accurately described its heat fusion of melting and simplified the governing energy equations. The data predicted by the model were consistent with the experimental data. The thermal conduction efficiency increased with the mat density and HDPE content during hot-pressing, and a higher mat density resulted in a higher mat core temperature. The addition of HDPE delayed heat transfer, and the mat had a lower core temperature at a higher HDPE content after reaching the melting temperature of HDPE. Both the experimental and simulated data suggested that a higher temperature and/or a longer duration during the hot-pressing process should be used to fabricate OFPC as the HDPE content increases. Thermal interface materials (also known as thermal pads) are widely used as a crucial part to dissipate heat generated in miniaturized and integrated electronic components. Here, we systematically investigated the effects of small ceramic and metallic powders in rubbery thermal composite pads with a high content of aluminum oxide filler on the thermal conductivity of the composite pads. We optimized the compositions of aluminum oxide fillers with two different sizes in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix for rubbery composite pads with a high thermal conductivity. Based on the optimized compositions, zinc oxide powder or copper powder with an average size of 1 μm was used to replace 5 μm-sized aluminum oxide filler to examine the effects of the small ceramic and metallic powders, respectively, on the thermal conductivity of the composite pads. When zinc oxide powder was used as the replacement, the thermal conductivity of the rubbery composite pads decreased because more air bubbles were generated during the processing of the mixed paste with increased viscosity. On the other hand, when the copper powder was used as a replacement, a thermal conductivity of up to 2.466 W/m·K was achieved for the rubbery composite pads by optimizing the mixing composition. In the present work, the ductile formation mechanism of a newly proposed torsion configuration has been investigated. One of the unique attributes of this paper is the first-time disclosure of the design and fabrication of a novel prototype screw with torsional flow character validating the orthogonal test model experimentally. The torsional spiral flow patterns that occurred in the torsion channel cause a ductile deformation of polymer in the form of a spiral, which in turn enhances the radial convection, achieving an effective mass transfer of material from the top region to the bottom region and vice versa. Furthermore, the characteristic parameters of torsion configuration have a significant influence on the plasticizing and melting capability of polymer. By range analysis and weight matrix analysis, the best factor and level combination was obtained. Results indicated that the aspect ratio of the torsion channel is almost equal to 1, and the plasticizing and melting capability of polymer is optimal. The paper presents a hybrid cooling model based on the use of newly designed fluted conformal cooling channels in combination with inserts manufactured with Fastcool material. The hybrid cooling design was applied to an industrial part with complex geometry, high rates of thickness, and deep internal concavities. The geometry of the industrial part, besides the ejection system requirements of the mold, makes it impossible to cool it adequately using traditional or conformal standard methods. The addition of helical flutes in the circular conformal cooling channel surfaces generates a high number of vortexes and turbulences in the coolant flow, fostering the thermal exchange between the flow and the plastic part. The use of a Fastcool insert allows an optimal transfer of the heat flow in the slender core of the plastic part. An additional conformal cooling channel layout was required, not for the cooling of the plastic part, but for cooling the Fastcool insert, improving the thermal exchange between the Fastcool insert and the coolant flow. In this way, it is possible to maintain a constant heat exchange throughout the manufacturing cycle of the plastic part. A transient numerical analysis validated the improvements of the hybrid design presented, obtaining reductions in cycle time for the analyzed part by 27.442% in comparison with traditional cooling systems. The design of the 1 mm helical fluted conformal cooling channels and the use of the Fastcool insert cooled by a conformal cooling channel improves by 4334.9% the thermal exchange between the cooling elements and the plastic part. Additionally, it improves by 51.666% the uniformity and the gradient of the temperature map in comparison with the traditional cooling solution. The results obtained in this paper are in line with the sustainability criteria of green molds, centered on reducing the cycle time and improving the quality of the complex molded parts. Controlling the residence time of drops on the solid surface is related to a wide spectrum of engineering applications, such as self-cleaning and anti-icing. The symmetry-breaking dynamics induced by the initial drop shape can promote drop bouncing. Here, we study the bouncing features of spherical and ellipsoidal drops on elliptical surfaces that continuously change curvatures inspired by natural succulent leaves. The bounce characteristics highly depend on the geometric relations between the ellipsoidal drops and curved surfaces. Numerical results show that ellipsoidal shapes of the drops amplify asymmetries of the mass and momentum in synergy with an influence of the surface curvature during the impact, which is verified by experiments. Effects of the surface anisotropy and drops' ellipticity on the residence time are investigated under various surface morphologies and Weber numbers. The residence time is closely associated with an initial surface curvature at the apex. The underlying principle of modifying the residence time via the drops' ellipticity and initial surface curvature is elucidated based on momentum asymmetry. Surface rapid heating process is an efficient and green method for large-volume production of polymer optics by adopting 3D graphene network coated silicon molds with high thermal conductivity. Nevertheless, the heat transfer mechanism including the interface thermal resistance evolution between 3D graphene network coating and polymer has not been thoroughly revealed. In this study, the interface thermal resistance model was established by simplifying the contact situation between the coating and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and then embedding into the finite element method (FEM) model to study the temperature variations of PMMA in surface rapid heating process. Heating experiments for graphene network were then carried out under different currents to provide the initial heat for heat transfer model. In addition, residual stress of the PMMA lens undergoing the non-uniform thermal history during molding was presented by the simulation model together. Finally, the optimal molding parameters including heating time and pressure will be determined according to calculation results of the interface thermal resistance model and microlens array molding experiment was conducted to illustrate that the interface thermal resistance model can predict the temperature of the polymer to achieve a better filling of microlens array with smooth surface and satisfactory optical performance. The thermal performance of closed-cell foams as an insulation device depends on the thermal conductivity. In these systems, the heat transfer mode associated with the convective contribution is generally ignored, and studies are based on the thermo-physical properties that emerge from the conductive contribution, while others include a term for radiative transport. The criterion found in the literature for disregarding convective heat flux is the cell diameter; however, the cell size for which convection is effectively suppressed has not been clearly disclosed, and it is variously quoted in the range 3–10 mm. In practice, changes in thermal conductivity are also attributed to the convection heat transfer mode; hence, natural convection in porous materials is worthy of research. This work extends the field of study of conjugate heat transfer (convection and conduction) in cellular materials using microstructure-based finite element analysis. For air-based insulating materials, the criteria to consider natural convection ( R a = 10 3 ) is met by cavities with sizes of 9.06 mm; however, convection is developed into several cavities despite their sizes being lower than 9.06 mm, hence, the average pore size that can effectively suppress the convective heat transfer is 6.0 mm. The amount of heat transported by convection is about 20% of the heat transported by conduction within the foam in a R a = 10 3 , which, in turn, produces an increasing average of the conductivity of about 4.5%, with respect to a constant value. Phase changing materials (PCMs) microcapsules MPCM32D, consisting of a polymeric melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin shell surrounding a paraffin core (melting point: 30–32 °C), have been modified by introducing thermally conductive additives on their outer shell surface. As additives, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and poly (3,4-ethylenedioxyoxythiophene) poly (styrene sulphonate) (PEDOT: PSS) were used in different parts by weight (1 wt.%, 5 wt.%, and 10 wt.%). The main aim of this modification—to enhance the thermal performance of the microencapsulated PCMs intended for textile applications. The morphologic analysis of the newly formed coating of MWCNTs or PEDOT: PSS microcapsules shell was observed by SEM. The heat storage and release capacity were evaluated by changing microcapsules MPCM32D shell modification. In order to evaluate the influence of the modified MF outer shell on the thermal properties of paraffin PCM, a thermal conductivity coefficient (λ) of these unmodified and shell-modified microcapsules was also measured by the comparative method. Based on the identified optimal parameters of the thermal performance of the tested PCM microcapsules, a 3D warp-knitted spacer fabric from PET was treated with a composition containing 5 wt.% MWCNTs or 5 wt.% PEDOT: PSS shell-modified microcapsules MPCM32D and acrylic resin binder. To assess the dynamic thermal behaviour of the treated fabric samples, an IR heating source and IR camera were used. The fabric with 5 wt.% MWCNTs or 5 wt.% PEDOT: PSS in shell-modified paraffin microcapsules MPCM32D revealed much faster heating and significantly slower cooling compared to the fabric treated with the unmodified ones. The thermal conductivity of the investigated fabric samples with modified microcapsules MPCM32D has been improved in comparison to the fabric samples with unmodified ones. That confirms the positive influence of using thermally conductive enhancing additives for the heat transfer rate within the textile sample containing these modified paraffin PCM microcapsules. Access to pure water is a very topical issue today. Desalination represents a promising way of obtaining drinking water in areas of shortage. Currently, efforts are being made to replace the metal components of existing desalination units due to the high corrosivity of sea water. Another requirement is easy transportation and assembly. The presented solution combines two types of polymeric hollow fibers that are used to create the distillation unit. Porous polypropylene hollow fiber membranes have been used as an active surface for mass transfer in the distillation unit, while non-porous thermal polypropylene hollow fibers have been employed in the condenser. The large active area to volume ratio of the hollow fiber module improves the efficiency of both units. Hot water is pumped inside the membranes in the distillation unit. Evaporation is first observed at a temperature gradient of 10 °C. The water vapor flows through the tunnel to the condenser where cold water runs inside the fibers. The temperature gradient causes condensation of the vapor, and the condensate is collected. The article presents data for hot water at temperatures of 55, 60, and 65 °C. Calcium alginate (Ca-Alg) fibers are renewable fibers obtained from the ocean with essential flame retardancy, which have recently been applied as components of flame-retardant paper. However, the application of Ca-Alg fibers is limited because of their tendency to smolder. Therefore, composites papers were fabricated by blending using flame-retardant polyamide-66 (FR-PA), with a 5 wt% content of phosphorous flame retardant, which will form molten carbon during combustion. When the FR-PA content is 30% of the composite paper, FR-PA forms a compact carbon layer on the surface of the Ca-Alg fibers during combustion, which isolates the mass/heat transfer and effectively suppresses the smoldering of Ca-Alg. This consists of a condensed flame retardant mechanism. Furthermore, the combustion and thermal degradation behavior of paper were analyzed by cone calorimetry (CONE), TG and TG-IR. Ca-Alg in the composite paper decomposed and released CO2 before ignition, which delayed the ignition time. Simultaneously, the FR-PA contained in the composite paper effectively inhibited the combustion of volatile combustibles in the gas phase. Overall, FR-PA and Ca-Alg improve the thermal stability of the composite paper in different temperature regions under air atmosphere. Ca-Alg reduces the formation of aromatic products and NH3 in the composite paper under N2 atmosphere. Ca-Alg-based paper with excellent flame retardancy was successfully prepared. Composites of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and expanded graphite (EG) are prepared for heat exchangers in multi-effect distillation (MED) desalination. At 50 wt.% EG loading, the thermal conductivity of HDPE was increased by 372%. Moreover, the surface wettability of the HDPE/EG composite was enhanced by corona and RF plasma treatment as demonstrated by the increase in surface free energy from 28.5 mJ/m2 for untreated HDPE/EG to 55.5 and 54.5 mJ/m2 for HDPE/EG treated by corona and RF plasma, respectively. This enhanced surface wettability was retained over a long time with only a 9% and 18% decrease in RF and corona plasma-treated samples' surface energy after two months. The viscoelastic moduli and the complex viscosity profiles indicated that EG content dictates the optimum processing technique. At loading below 30 wt.%, the extrusion process is preferred, while above 30 wt.% loading, injection molding is preferred. The plasma treatment also improved the HDPE/EG composite overall heat transfer coefficient with an overall heat transfer coefficient of the composite reaching about 98% that of stainless steel. Moreover, the plasma-treated composite exhibited superior resistance to crystallization fouling in both CaSO4 solution and artificial seawater compared to untreated composites and stainless-steel surfaces. Micro-injection molding has attracted a wide range of research interests to fabricate polymer products with nanostructures for its advantages of cheap and fast production. The heat transfer between the polymer and the mold insert is important to the performance of products. In this study, the interface thermal resistance (ITR) between the polypropylene (PP) layer and the nickel (Ni) mold insert layer in micro-injection molding was studied by using the method of non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulation. The relationships among the ITR, the temperature, the packing pressure, the interface morphology, and the interface interaction were investigated. The simulation results showed that the ITR decreased obviously with the increase of the temperature, the packing pressure and the interface interaction. Both rectangle and triangle interface morphologies could enhance the heat transfer compared with the smooth interface. Moreover, the ITR of triangle interface was higher than that of rectangle interface. Based on the analysis of phonon density of states (DOS) for PP-Ni system, it was found that the mismatch between the phonon DOS of the PP atoms and Ni atoms was the main cause of the interface resistance. This study investigates the optimization of thermal conductivity of nickel zinc ferrite incorporated thermoplastic natural rubber nanocomposites using response surface methodology (RSM). The experimental runs were based on face-centered central composite design (FCCD) where three levels were designated for both temperature and magnetic filler content. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) results showed that the implemented technique is significant with an F-value of 35.7 and a p-value of <0.0001. Moreover, the statistical inference drawn from the quadratic model suggests a saddle response behavior the thermal conductivity took when both factors were correlated. The factors' optimal set confined within the practical range led to a thermal conductivity of 1.05 W/m·K, a value which is believed to be associated with an optimal percolated network that served as efficacious thermal pathways in the fabricated nanocomposites. In this study, the epoxy powder was blended with graphene to improve its thermal conductivity and heat dissipation efficiency. The thermal conductivity of the graphene-loaded coating was increased by 167 folds. In addition, the emissivity of the graphene-loaded coating was 0.88. The epoxy powder was further coated on aluminum plate through powder coating process in order to study the effect on the performance of heat dissipation. In the case of natural convective heat transfer, the surface temperature of the graphene-loaded coated aluminum plate was 96.7 °C, which was 27.4 °C lower than that of bare aluminum plate (124.1 °C) at a heat flux of 16 W. In the case of forced convective heat transfer, the surface temperature decreased from 77.8 and 68.3 °C for a heat flux of 16 W. The decrease in temperature can be attributed to the thermal radiation. Fibers with good flame retardant (FR) and smoke suppression performances are highly desirable for the purpose of eliminating fire hazard. This study developed a novel FR fiber by wet-spinning poly (vinyl alcohol)/β-cyclodextrin (PVA/βCD) composite fiber and crosslinking it with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). βCDs showed good compatibility with PVA matrix, and the resulting PVA/CD/HDI fibers showed mechanical strength at the same level as natural cotton fiber. The PVA/CD/HDI fibers also showed excellent flame retardance (the LOI value of PVA/CD/HDI could reach 41.7%, and their peak of heat release (PHRR) could be reduced by up to 77.7% by neat PVA), and super-smoke suppression (the value of total smoke production (TSP) was only 28.6% compared to PVA). These dramatic reductions of fire hazard were ascribed to the char formation of βCD and crosslinking structure of PVA/CD/HDI, which formed a compact char layer during combustion, thus preventing heat transmission and smoke release. The use of lasers and thermal transfers on the skin is fundamental in medical and clinical treatments. In this paper, we constructed and applied bioheat transfer equations in the context of a two-temperature heat conduction model in order to discuss the three-dimensional variation in the temperature of laser-irradiated biological tissue. The amount of thermal damage in the tissue was calculated using the Arrhenius integral. Mathematical difficulties were encountered in applying the equations. As a result, the Laplace and Fourier transform technique was employed, and solutions for the conductive temperature and dynamical temperature were obtained in the Fourier transform domain. In this study, we investigated the synergistic effects of thermally conductive hybrid carbonaceous fillers of mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers (MPCFs) and reduced graphene oxides (rGOs) on the thermal conductivity of polymer matrix composites. Micro-sized MPCFs with different lengths (50 μm, 200 μm, and 6 mm) and nano-sized rGOs were used as the thermally conductive fillers used for the preparation of the heat-dissipation polymer composites. For all MPCF fillers with a different length, the thermal conductivity values of the MPCF/epoxy composites were proportional to the MPCF length and loading amount (0–50 wt%) of MPCFs. For an MPCF:rGO weight ratio of 49:1 (total loading amount of 50 wt%), the thermal conductivity values of MPCF-rGO/epoxy composites loaded with MPCFs of 50 μm, 200 μm, and 6 mm increased from 5.56 to 7.98 W/mK (approximately 44% increase), from 7.36 to 9.80 W/mK (approximately 33% increase), and from 11.53 to 12.58 W/mK (approximately 9% increase) compared to the MPCF/epoxy composites, respectively, indicating the synergistic effect on the thermal conductivity enhancement. The rGOs in the MPCF-rGO/epoxy composites acted as thermal bridges between neighboring MPCFs, resulting in the formation of effective heat transfer pathways. In contrast, the MPCF-rGO/epoxy composites with MPCF:rGO weight ratios of 48:2 and 47:3 decreased the synergistic effect more significantly compared to rGO content of 1 wt%, which is associated with the agglomeration of rGO nanoparticles. The synergistic effect was inversely proportional to the MPCF length. A theoretical approach, the modified Mori-Tanaka model, was used to estimate the thermal conductivity values of the MPCF-rGO/epoxy composites, which were in agreement with the experimentally measured values for MPCF-rGO/epoxy composites loaded with short MPCF lengths of 50 and 200 μm. Gypsum molds have been developed as an alternative for the Rapid tooling (RT) method used in injection molding. However, the poor capability of the heat delivery forces the gypsum mold to operate under a high-risk condition, and distortion of the molded part becomes apparent. The goal is to investigate the effect of a heat sink on the reduction of the gypsum mold temperature and to establish a methodology for the heat sink design. The methodology used the advantage of the electrical circuit concept to analyze the mold temperature. The heat transfer of a mold was modeled using an equivalent thermal circuit. After all the components on the circuit were determined, the heat transfer rate could then be calculated. Once the heat transfer rate was known, the mold temperature could be easily analyzed. A modified thermal circuit considering transverse heat conduction was also proposed, which estimated the mold temperature more accurately. The mold temperature was reduced by 16.8 °C when a gypsum mold was installed with a 40 mm thick heat sink in a parallel configuration. Moreover, the reduction of the mold temperature improved the deflection of the molded part from 0.78 mm to 0.54 mm. This work provides a quick approach to analyze the mold temperature based on the thermal circuit concept. As the cooling system of the mold was modularized analytically, important properties of the cooling system in the heat transfer process were revealed by analyzing the thermal circuit of the mold, for example, the heat transfer rate or the mold temperature. A very important issue that needs to be solved as simply and correctly as possible is how to establish the thermal performance of phase-changing materials (PCM). The undertaken researches have analyzed the values of the thermal performances of the PCM taking into account the method of finite elements and the experimental research, respectively, based on a modern measurement system that was designed and implemented. Butyl stearate which has been encapsulated through complex coacervation in polymethyl methacrylate has been used as a PCM. Samples were made containing 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% PCM, respectively, within their structure. The research has established that at both the hot plate and the cold plate interface, the evolution of the temperature over time, established by both the finite element method (FEM) and experimental research, are quite close, and the best results have been obtained for the P30 sample. A very important thing observed during the finite element method (FEM) is that the simulated thermal flow variation extends between 2700-3110W/m2 being small enough not to influence the temperature measurement at the interface of hot or cold plates. Thus, the use of the FEM or the experimental research method can be applied with good results, provided that the correct initial conditions are used in the finite element method and that the experimental research is performed using the best possible apparatus. This study aims to enhance the low-frequency induction heating (LFIH) effect in a thermoplastic polymer doped with iron oxide magnetic particles, which are promising candidates for several medical applications thanks to their confirmed biocompatibility. Two main approaches were proposed to successfully boost the heating ability; i.e., improving the magnetic concentration of the composite with higher filler content of 30 wt %, and doubling the frequency excitation after optimization of the inductor design. To test the magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic composite, a measurement of permeability as a function of temperature, frequency, and particle content was carried out. Thermal transfer based COMSOL simulations together with experimental tests have been performed, demonstrating feasibility of the proposed approach to significantly enhance the target temperature in a magnetic composite. These results are encouraging and confirmed that IH can be exploited in medical applications, especially for the treatment of varicose veins where local heating remains a true challenge. Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) can adjust their stiffness, lock a temporary shape, and recover the permanent shape upon an appropriate stimulus. They are applied in the field of morphing skins. This work presents a variable-stiffness corrugated sheet based on a carbon fiber felt (CFF)-reinforced epoxy-based SMP composite that shows variable stiffness and extreme mechanical anisotropy for potential morphing skin applications. The corrugated sheet exhibits a variable stiffness with a change in temperature, which can help the skin adjust its stiffness according to different service environments. The corrugated sheet can be electrically heated rapidly and homogeneously due to its high electrical conductivity and enhanced heat transfer efficiency. Its Joule-heating effect acts as an effective active stimulation of the variable stiffness and shape-memory effect. The CFF-reinforced epoxy-based SMP composite was manufactured into a corrugated shape to obtain extreme mechanical anisotropy. The corrugated sheet shows a low in-plane stiffness to minimize the actuation energy, while it also possesses high out-of-plane stiffness to transfer the aerodynamic pressure load. Its mechanical properties, electrical heating performance, and shape-memory effect were investigated using experiments. The results show that the proposed SMP composite exhibits extreme mechanical anisotropy, considerable deformation ability, and variable stiffness induced by Joule heating without an external heater. In the present work, sustainable rigid polyurethane foams (RPUF) reinforced with chicken feathers (CF) were prepared and characterized. The bio-based polyol used to formulate the foams was obtained from castor oil. This investigation reports the influence of the chicken feathers fibers as reinforcement of RPUF, on water absorption, thermal, mechanical and morphological properties (field-emission scanning electron microscope—FESEM) and thermal conductivity on water-blown biofoams. It was found that the biofoams improved thermal insulating properties when CF was added. The addition of CF to foams provided lower heat flux density to the biofoams obtaining bio-based materials with better insulation properties. The results obtained in this study proved that the incorporation of CF to RPUF modified the cell structure of the foams affecting their physical and mechanical properties, as well as functional properties such as the heat transmission factor. These biofoams containing up to 45% of bio-based materials have shown the potential to replace fully petroleum-based foams in thermal insulation applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
