There is an ever-growing interest in recovering and recycling waste materials due to their hazardous nature to the environment and human health. Recently, especially since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, disposable medical face masks have been a major source of pollution, hence the rise in studies being conducted on how to recover and recycle this waste. At the same time, fly ash, an aluminosilicate waste, is being repurposed in various studies. The general approach to recycling these materials is to process and transform them into novel composites with potential applications in various industries. This work aims to investigate the properties of composites based on silico-aluminous industrial waste (ashes) and recycled polypropylene from disposable medical face masks and to create usefulness for these materials. Polypropylene/ash composites were prepared through melt processing methods, and samples were analyzed to get a general overview of the properties of these composites. Results showed that the polypropylene recycled from face masks used together with silico-aluminous ash can be processed through industrial melt processing methods and that the addition of only 5 wt% ash with a particle size of less than 90 µm, increases the thermal stability and the stiffness of the polypropylene matrix while maintaining its mechanical strength. Water is a resource that is essential to almost all phases of industrial and manufacturing operations globally. It is important to handle the wastewater generated professionally. The textile industry is one of the major global polluters, with textile producers responsible for one-fifth of all industrial water pollution worldwide. In contrast, heavy metal contamination has developed into a critical, expanding global environmental problem. Geopolymer is a cementitious constituent of amorphous aluminosilicates derived from natural or industrial wastes. It is produced using the polymerization of aluminosilicate raw ingredients in an alkaline atmosphere. The aim of this study is to evaluate the application of eco-friendly geopolymer cement in the immobilization technique for the treatment of wastewater including heavy metals and dyes. Geopolymer cement pastes were organized using slag and fly ash as an aluminosilicate source, (1:1) sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide 15 wt.% as an alkali activator in the presence of organic dye pollutant reactive red 195, and Cu2+ ions (700 ppm) at different hydration times for up to 28 days. The physicochemical and mechanical properties of the prepared geopolymer cement mixes were further examined in relation to reactive dye pollutant and Cu2+ ions. The hydration characteristic was examined using the compressive strength and % of total porosity tests, as well as FTIR and XRD studies. Our findings support the 100% immobilization of both Cu2+ ions and organic dye pollutants in prepared geopolymer pastes for up to 28 days of hydration. Additionally, adding both Cu2+ ions and dye pollutants to the prepared geopolymer paste improves its mechanical properties, which is also supported by FTIR data. XRD and FTIR studies showed that the Cu2+ ions and dying bath effluent addition have no influence on the kind of hydration products that are produced. On the other hand, the geopolymerization process is negatively impacted by the presence of Cu2+ ions alone in the geopolymer paste. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geopolymers are high-performance, cost-effective materials made from industrial waste that ideally fit the needs of 3D printing technology used in construction. The novelty of the present work lies in the investigation of methods to mix geopolymer concrete from fly ash (FA) class F, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), and raw calcined kaolin clay (RCKC) to determine the mixing procedure which provides the best mechanical strength and structural integrity. The experimental results show that aluminosilicates with different reaction parameters when mixed one after another provide the optimal results while the geopolymer concrete possesses the highest compressive strength and the denser structure. The results demonstrated that the reactivity of GGBS, FA, and RCKC increased for different depolymerization speeds of the selected aluminosilicates. This research will provide results on how to improve the mixing order for geopolymer synthesis for 3D printing demands. The highest compressive strength and denser structure of geopolymer concrete is achieved when each type of aluminosilicate is mixed with an alkaline medium separately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Beneficiation of industrial wastes, such as mine tailings (MTs), through development of alternative eco-friendly geopolymer binders for construction composites offers a twofold environmental benefit, as it reduces the demand for cement and it increases the sustainability of industrial processes by creating a value-added product from an industrial byproduct. While MTs have the requisite composition for use as a geopolymer precursor, they are often low-reactive. This study explored the effect of Class C Fly Ash (FAc) on the geopolymerization of low-reactive gold MTs. A 10 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution was used as the alkaline activator with four different concentrations of FAc (5, 10, 15 and 20 wt.%). The results indicated that the combination of FAc with the low-reactive gold MTs improved the physicochemical stability of the final geopolymerized samples, with a 95–120% increase in compressive strength, compared to the geopolymer samples of only low-reactive gold MTs. Although some of the strength improvement could be attributed to geopolymerization of the FAc itself, the presence of the FAc also improved the reactivity of the MTs, increasing the geopolymer production of the MTs. This study documents the positive effects of the FAc on gold MTs with low-calcium content and their conversion into sustainable inorganic composite geopolymers for the construction field. In this research, a fly ash/epoxy composite was fabricated using fly ash filler classified as industrial waste. The behavior of its mechanical properties was investigated by changing the volume of fly ash to 10, 30 and 50 vol.%. To determine the influence of particle size on the mechanical properties, we used two different sizes of the fly ash, which were separated by sieving to less than 90 μm and 53 μm. To optimize fabrication conditions, the viscosity of the fly ash/epoxy slurry was measured at various temperatures with different fly ash volume fractions. In terms of mechanical properties, tensile strength increased as the amount of fly ash increased, up to a critical point. On the other hand, the compression strength of the composite increased continuously as the amount of fly ash increased. Finally, the fracture surfaces were characterized and correlated with the mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
