Abstract Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) resins constitute the third most important plastic materials available commercially, in terms of worldwide volume production, and can be manufactured through several polymerization mechanisms, including free radical, ionic and redox polymerization processes. Approximately 80% of the worldwide commercial PVC production is performed through suspension polymerization processes in batch mode, due to intrinsic problems of continuous suspension polymerization processes, such as polymer incrustation in reaction vessels, transport equipment and pipes. For this reason, the present review provides an extensive bibliometric survey, including papers and patents, on attempts to develop continuous polymerization process technologies for PVC manufacture. Particularly, the present survey characterizes the degree of maturity and the main bottlenecks of continuous PVC processes that have been frequently overlooked in the technical literature.

Este trabalho apresenta o estudo do comportamento de compostos de PVC com adição de amido para aplicação especialmente na indústria calçadista. As propriedades mecânicas dos compostos nas proporções de 5, 7,5 e 10% foram estudadas através de ensaios de tração. Também foram verificados os índices de fluidez, alterações de propriedades quando submetidos ao envelhecimento artificial em estufa e natural ao expor às intempéries e enterrar no solo. A viabilidade da aplicação na indústria calçadista foi feita por injeção em gáspeas e tiras de sandálias, com testes de resistência, flexão e testes de campo. Os resultados demonstraram que o acréscimo de amido ao PVC provoca perda nas propriedades mecânicas, justificado pela baixa resistência mecânica do amido em relação ao PVC. Após envelhecimento em estufa o processo de retrogradação do amido deixa os compostos mais rígidos e com menor fluidez. Quando expostos às intempéries e ao solo, o PVC pode ser degradado com perda de HCl, o que leva à acidificação do solo. Nas aplicações em calçados e sandálias a resistência mecânica não atende aos requisitos do mercado. Apesar do baixo custo, o fraco comportamento mecânico dificulta sua viabilização para substituição em escala.This paper deals with the behavior of PVC compounds with addition of starch for applications, especially in the footwear industry. The mechanical properties of the compounds in the proportions of 5, 7.5 and 10% were studied using tensile tests. Also investigated were the flow rates, in addition to changes in properties when the material was subjected to artificial aging in an oven and exposed to natural weather and buried in the soil. The feasibility of application in the industry was evaluated with tests of endurance, strength and field tests in injection uppers and straps of sandals. The results showed that the addition of starch to PVC causes loss of mechanical properties, owing to the lower mechanical strength of starch compared to PVC. After aging in an oven, starch is degraded, thus causing the compound more rigid and less fluid. When exposed to weather and soil, PVC can be degraded with loss of HCl, which leads to soil acidification. In conclusion, for applications in footwear and sandals, the mechanical strength does not meet the market requirements. Despite the low cost, the poor mechanical behavior makes them unviable for mass scale production.

The use of plastic materials by the piping industry accounts for a significant volume of polymers. In this segment PVC represents the largest worldwide market for plastics. PVC is often used in plastic pressure pipe systems for pipelines in the water and sewer industries because of its inexpensive nature and flexibility. Pipes and fittings constitute the largest volume application at 40% of the marketplace. This paper discusses the piping extrusion process and the worldwide PVC market, emphasizing the Brazilian market. It is also presented a case study including an overall cost calculation for making an extrusion line for PVC piping.

Este artigo apresenta uma revisão sobre o tema degradação térmica e estabilização do PVC. Os principais mecanismos de degradação desta resina são apresentados e correlacionados com os defeitos estruturais presentes no polímero, bem como os princípios de estabilização.This paper presents a review of PVC thermal degradation and stabilization. The main degradation mechanisms for this resin are shown and correlated to structural defects present in the polymer, as well the stabilization principles

Neste trabalho foram avaliadas as propriedades de compósitos de poli (cloreto de vinila) - PVC rígido com adição de fibras de bananeira. As fibras foram extraídas do pseudocaule da bananeira e incorporadas nas proporções de 5, 10 e 20% em volume em um composto de PVC rígido pelo processo de extrusão. Para a obtenção dos corpos de prova utilizados na caracterização das formulações foi utilizado o processo de injeção. A utilização de fibras extraídas do pseudocaule da bananeira, tratadas manualmente em um processo simples desenvolvido na SOCIESC, mostra-se como alternativa viável na forma de fibra de reforço para a produção de compósitos de PVC rígido, tendo mostrado aumento da resistência à tração, discreta redução no alongamento na ruptura e aumento da resistência ao impacto, bem como redução, mesmo que discreta, no peso específico do compósito resultante, potencializando a obtenção de componentes com melhor desempenho mecânico e menor peso.Mechanical properties (tensile and impact resistance), specific weight and phase morphology of PVC/banana tree fiber composites were evaluated in this paper. The fibers were extracted from de pseudostem of the banana tree and mixed with a rigid PVC compound in the proportions of 5, 10 and 20% in volume by the extrusion process. Specimens were obtained by injection molding. The composites showed improvement of the impact and tensile properties, reduction of the specific weight, making possible the production of final products.

Este artigo busca analisar a relação existente entre o grau de gelificação de compostos de PVC rígido (U-PVC) durante seu processamento e as propriedades mecânicas finais dos produtos obtidos através do processo de extrusão de tubos. Para tanto, a morfologia das resinas de PVC é analisada a fim de se entender seu desenvolvimento ao longo da extrusão e entender sua influência na gelificação já que o desempenho do produto dependerá dessa influência. O desenvolvimento morfológico, devido às condições de processamento e ambiente termo-mecânico, bem como alguns testes como microscopia eletrônica de varredura para monitorar esse desenvolvimento são descritos. O grau de gelificação e sua quantificação são analisados utilizando reometrias de torque, rotacional e capilar, utilizando análises térmicas (DSC) e utilizando imersão em solvente (cloreto de metileno).This paper analyses the relation between the degree of gelation of rigid unplasticised PVC compounds (U-PVC) and the mechanical properties of final products made of them. The morphology of PVC resins is analyzed in order to understand its development during the extrusion process and the influence in the gelation process, once the performance of the final product depends of it. The morphological development, the processing conditions, the thermal-mechanical environment and some techniques for its determination, such as scanning electron microscopy, are described. The degree of gelation and its quantification are determined using torque, rotational and capillary rheometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and solvent immersion (dichloromethane).

O poli(cloreto de vinila) (PVC) é o segundo termoplástico mais consumido em todo o mundo, sendo considerado o mais versátil dentre os plásticos. A grande versatilidade do PVC deve-se a suas propriedades e também a sua adequação aos mais variados processos de transformação. Uma vez que a resina de PVC é atóxica e inerte, a escolha de aditivos com essas mesmas características, permite a fabricação de filmes para embalagens de alimentos e produtos médico-hospitalares. Entretanto, suas propriedades podem se alterar quando submetido a qualquer processo de esterilização, especialmente por radiação gama. Neste trabalho foi realizado um estudo sobre a flexibilidade e estabilidade frente à radiação gama do PVC modificado quimicamente. O PVC foi modificado pela substituição de átomos de cloro por grupos alquila e benzila através de reações com reagentes de Grignard. Amostras de PVC modificado foram caracterizadas por espectroscopia de ressonância magnética nuclear de hidrogênio (RMN ¹H), espectroscopia na região do infravermelho com transformada de Fourier e calorimetria diferencial exploratória. A degradação do PVC modificado, quando submetido à radiação gama, foi avaliada por seus parâmetros viscosimétricos. De uma forma geral, o PVC modificado apresentou maior estabilidade à radiação gama que o original. O polímero modificado por substituição do cloro por grupo que contém um anel aromático foi o que apresentou maior estabilidade, quando submetido à dose de esterilização de 25 kGy. O PVC modificado apresentou temperaturas de transição vítrea ligeiramente mais baixas que o PVC original, indicando uma tendência ao aumento de flexibilidade pela presença de grupos alquila e benzila na cadeia do polímero.Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) ranks second among the most consumed thermoplastics in the world, and is considered the most versatile plastic. This versatility arises from its properties and suitability to a variety of transformation processes. The resin is non toxic and inert, therefore the choice of additives having these properties allows for the fabrication of films for food packaging and medical products. On the other hand, the PVC properties can be altered by sterilization processes, in particular through gamma radiation. In this paper we present a study of the flexibility and stability to gamma radiation of chemically-modified PVC. PVC was modified through substitution of chlorine by alkyl and benzyl groups using Grignard reagents. Modified PVC samples were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetric analyses. Degradation of the polymers when submitted to gamma irradiation was evaluated by their viscometric parameters. The modified PVCs generally presented higher stability to gamma radiation than the original polymer. The benzyl substituted polymer exhibited the highest stability when submitted to the sterilization dosage of 25 kGy. The modified PVCs presented glass transition temperatures slightly lower than the original polymer pointing to an increase in flexibility due to the presence of alkyl and benzyl groups as substituents in the main chain.
