Background: Immunization estimated to prevent 2 to 3 million children deaths every year from vaccine preventable disease. In Ethiopia, limited and inconclusive studies have been conducted on immunization coverage so far. Therefore, this umbrella review was intended to estimate the pooled national immunization coverage and its associated factors among children age 12–23 months in Ethiopia. Methods: This umbrella review included five systematic reviews and meta-analyses through literature search from PubMed, Science direct, and web of science, CINHALE, and data bases specific to systematic reviews such as the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and Prospero, the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews from May 1 to 30/ 2023. Only systematic reviews and meta-analyses published in English from inception to May 1, 2023, were included. The quality of each study was assessed using Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews. Data were extracted using Microsoft excel 2016 and analyzed using STATA 17.0 statistical software. Heterogeneity among studies was assessed using the Cochran Q statistics and I2 test. The pooled effect sizes were determined using pooled proportion for the full vaccination coverage and odds ratios for the associated factors with the corresponding 95% confidence interval were used to declare statically significance. Results: Five studies with 77,161 children aged 12–23 months were included. The overall pooled full vaccination coverage was 57.72% (95% CI 50.17, 65.28). Institutional delivery (OR: 2.12, 95% CI: 1.78–2.52), travel to vaccination site for <2 hours (OR: 2.43, 95%CI: 1.97–3.00), received at least one antenatal (ANC) visit (OR: 3.2, 95%CI: 2.46–4.1), good maternal knowledge of immunization (OR: 3.63, 95%CI: 2.82–4.67), being informed on immunization schedule (OR: 2.54, 95%CI: 2.02–3.2), living in urban areas (OR: 2, 95% CI: 1.54–2.6), and a household visit by health-care providers (HCP) during the postnatal period (OR: 2.23, 95%CI: 1.22–4.09) were the independent predictors of immunization coverage. Conclusion: This study showed the full immunization coverage in Ethiopia was lower compared to the WHO-recommended level. Besides, the current umbrella review identifies several factors that contribute to higher immunization coverage. These includes; institutional delivery, near to vaccination site, having ANC visit, being urban residence, household visited by HCP, having good knowledge and informed on immunization schedule. Thus, the government should intensify the growth of immunization services by emphasizing outreach initiatives to reach remote areas and professionals must combine child immunization service with other medical services offered by health institutions. Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are major public health problems in developing countries. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of IPIs at Debarq Primary Hospital in northwest Ethiopia. A health facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2022 to June 2022. The study participants were recruited from patients who visited Debarq Primary Hospital during the study period. Stool samples were collected from each participant and examined for intestinal parasites using direct wet-mount and formal-ether concentration techniques. Socio-demographic data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Out of 422 individuals examined, 33.64% were infected with at least one intestinal parasite species. Entamoeba histolytica/dispar, Giardia intestinalis, Ascaris lumbricoides, and hookworm were found in 12.79%, 8.53%, 7.10%, and 1.65% of the participants, respectively. Double and triple parasite infections were found in 2.37% and 0.23% of the participants, respectively. A habit of eating unwashed vegetables (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 9.98, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.68–37.14) and low income (AOR = 6.66, 95% CI = 1.87–23.70) were associated with increased odds of IPIs. Participants with a habit of hand washing after using the toilet had 0.05 (95% CI = 0.13–0.22) lower odds of IPIs than those who did not. In conclusion, IPIs are common among Debarq Primary Hospital patients and are associated with factors such as low income, not washing hands after using the toilet, and eating unwashed vegetation, necessitating control and prevention efforts in the study area that include health education and the provision and use of sanitary facilities. Background: The overall time refers to the amount of time a patient spends in a health care facility, from the time he or she enters to the time he or she leaves. As a result of the imbalance between supply and demand, waiting times occur. Ethiopian hospitals are being reformed to improve the quality of care they provide. The time a patient spends in the hospital is one of the most important indicators of quality of care, as it provides insight into customer satisfaction and provider success. However, the overall time patients spend in hospitals was not studied. Objective: The study aimed to assess the overall time spent by clients from entry to exit and associated factors in the outpatient departments of Jimma zone hospitals. Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Patients from outpatient units at Jimma zone public hospitals participated in the study from March 15 to May 17, 2018. Data were collected using a time and motion tool coupled with an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire on 249 samples. Participants in the study were selected using the consecutive sampling method. Overall time, in terms of waiting and service times at each section unit, and the relationship of socio-demographic and clinical factors with overall time was the main outcome variables. Data were analyzed using descriptive and linear regression analysis. Simple linear regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between the dependent and explanatory variables. Variables were considered significantly associated with the overall time if they had a p-value of less than 0.05 at the 95% confidence interval (CI). Result: The overall response rate was 94.8%. Overall, patients spent a median time of 342.5 minutes. Patients spent 12.7% of the total time as service time and 86% of the time waiting for care. The longest overall times were spent in the laboratory (170 minutes), imaging (95 minutes), other diagnostic units (84 minutes) and examination (83 minutes). The average overall time was increased by 52.03 minutes (95%CI 21.65, 82.412), 4.65 minutes (95%CI 3.983, 5.324), and 96.43 minutes (95%CI 52.076, 140.787) when the patient was referred, the number of patients at the queue was increased by one unit, and patients who had other diagnostic tests performed respectively with P <0.005 &adjusted R2 = 0.522. Conclusion and recommendations: The majority of patients stayed for a longer period. Most time was spent waiting for services, particularly in the examination, laboratory, and imaging units. This is strongly related to high patient load, an absence of some services, being referred patients, and patients who had other diagnostic tests. To reduce the number of patients in the queues, hospitals should work hand in hand with the Ministry of Health to enforce policies that are understood and adopted by all workers in the lower healthcare facilities. And hospital administrators are working to strengthen the triaging system to screen patients with minor illnesses. This is because most patients with minor illnesses queue with those with more complicated illnesses. Finally, we recommend that researchers conduct further research on service quality. Ethiopia's healthcare system relies on traditional medicinal practices that use medicinal plants to treat human and livestock ailments. However, the lack of empirical validation regarding the efficacy of these treatments against specific infectious diseases necessitates rigorous scientific investigations. The objective of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity and phytochemical screening on five selected medicinal plant species, namely Solanum somalense Franchet., Verbascum sinaiticum Benth., Rumex nervosus Vahl, Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal and Calpurnia aurea (Ait.) Benth. The plants were first identified jointly with local informants and later considering mainly their high informant consensus and fidelity level values for their efficacy in treating infectious diseases in the area. Ethanol and aqueous extracts were prepared from the plant materials, and their antibacterial activities were evaluated against standard bacterial strains, representing both gram-positive and gram-negative types. To assess the antibacterial activity of the extracts, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined using the broth dilution method. Additionally, phytochemical screening was performed using standard qualitative tests to identify various secondary metabolites. The results indicated antibacterial efficacy in the ethanol extracts of S. somalense, W. somnifera, and C. aurea against particular bacterial strains (S. somalense against S. agalactiae with MIC of 1.5 mg/mL; W. somnifera against S. aureus and E. coli, with MIC of 2 mg/mL; C. aurea against E. coli and K. pneumoniae, with MICs of 3 mg/mL and 3.5 mg/mL, respectively). The results of the phytochemical screening indicated the presence of steroids, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and terpenoids. The selected medicinal plants demonstrated promising antibacterial activity against certain bacterial strains. The current findings support the long-standing claim of the traditional medical system of the study area for their continued use of these plants in their treatment of infectious diseases. Further investigation is required to isolate the responsible active compounds and characterize the constituents and description of their antibacterial effect for possible use in areas where these infectious diseases are major health problems. Background: Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium infections have been public health problems in Ethiopia, S. mansoni being more prevalent. To reduce the burden of schistosomiasis, a national school-based prazequantel (PZQ) mass drug administration (MDA) program has been implemented since November 2015. Nevertheless, S. mansoni infection is still a major public health problem throughout the country. Reduced efficacy of PZQ is reported by a few studies in Ethiopia, but adequate data in different geographical settings is lacking. Hence, this study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of PZQ for the treatment of S. mansoni infection across different transmission settings in Amhara Regional State, northwest Ethiopia. Methods: A school-based single-arm prospective cohort study was conducted from February to June, 2023 among 130 S. mansoni-infected school-aged children (SAC). Forty-two, 37, and 51 S. mansoni-infected SAC were recruited from purposely selected schools located in low, moderate, and high transmission districts, respectively. School-aged children who were tested positive both by Kato Katz (KK) using stool samples and by the point of care circulating cathodic antigen (POC-CCA) test using urine samples at baseline were treated with a standard dose of PZQ and followed for 21 days for the occurrence of adverse events. After three weeks post-treatment, stool and urine samples were re-tested using KK and POC-CCA. Then the cure rate (CR), egg reduction rate (ERR), and treatment-associated adverse events were determined. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 21. Results: Out of the total 130 study participants, 110 completed the follow-up. The CR and ERR of PZQ treatment were 88.2% (95%CI: 82.7–93.6) and 93.5% (95%CI: 85.4–98.5), respectively, by KK. The CR of PZQ based on the POC-CCA test was 70.9% (95%CI: 62.7–79.1) and 75.5% (95%CI: 67.3–83.6) depending on whether the interpretation of 'trace' results was made as positive or negative, respectively. After treatment on the 21st day, 78 and 83 participants tested negative both by KK and POC-CCA, with respective interpretations of 'trace' POC-CCA test results as positive or negative. The CR in low, moderate and high transmission settings was 91.7%, 91.2% and 82.5%, respectively (p = 0.377) when evaluated by KK. The CR among SAC with a light infection at baseline (95.7%) by KK was higher than that of moderate (81.5%) and heavy (64.3%) infections (χ2 = 12.53, p = 0.002). Twenty-six (23.6%) participants manifested at least one adverse event. Eleven (10.0%), eight (7.3%), six (5.5%), and three (2.7%) participants complained about abdominal pain, nausea, headache, and anorexia, respectively. All adverse events were mild, needing no intervention. Occurrence of adverse events was slightly higher in high endemic areas (32.5%) than moderate (23.5%) and low endemic areas (p = 0.279). Conclusions: A single dose of 40 mg/kg PZQ was efficacious and safe for the treatment of S. mansoni infection when it was evaluated by the KK test, but a lower efficacy was recorded when it was evaluated by the POC-CCA test. However, the POC-CCA test's specificity, clearance time of CCA from urine after treatment, and interpretation of weakly reactive (trace) test results need further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In low-transmission settings, accurate estimates of malaria transmission are needed to inform elimination targets. Detection of antimalarial antibodies provides exposure history, but previous studies have mainly relied on species-specific antigens. The use of chimeric antigens that include epitopes from multiple species of malaria parasites in population-based serological surveys could provide data for exposure to multiple Plasmodium species circulating in an area. Here, the utility of P. vivax/P. falciparum chimeric antigen for assessing serological responses was evaluated in Ethiopia, an endemic country for all four human malarias, and Costa Rica, where P. falciparum has been eliminated with reports of sporadic P. vivax cases. Methods: A multiplex bead-based assay was used to determine the seroprevalence of IgG antibodies against a chimeric malaria antigen (PvRMC-MSP1) from blood samples collected from household surveys in Ethiopia in 2015 (n = 7,077) and Costa Rica in 2015 (n = 851). Targets specific for P. falciparum (PfMSP1) and P. vivax (PvMSP1) were also included in the serological panel. Seroprevalence in the population and seroconversion rates were compared among the three IgG targets. Results: Seroprevalence in Costa Rica was 3.6% for PfMSP1, 41.5% for PvMSP1 and 46.7% for PvRMC-MSP1. In Ethiopia, seroprevalence was 27.6% for PfMSP1, 21.4% for PvMSP1, and 32.6% for PvRMC-MSP1. IgG levels in seropositive individuals were consistently higher for PvRMC-MSP1 when compared to PvMSP1 in both studies. Seroconversion rates were 0.023 for PvMSP1 and 0.03 for PvRMC-MSP1 in Costa Rica. In Ethiopia, seroconversion rates were 0.050 for PfMSP1, 0.044 for PvMSP1 and 0.106 for PvRMC-MSP1. Conclusions: Our data indicate that chimeric antigen PvRMC-MSP1 is able to capture antibodies to multiple epitopes from both prior P. falciparum and P. vivax infections, and suitable chimeric antigens can be considered for use in serosurveys with appropriate validation. Introduction: The last two decades saw an extensive effort to design, develop and implement integrated and multidimensional healthcare evaluation systems in high-income countries. However, in low- and middle-income countries, few experiences of such systems implementation have been reported in the scientific literature. We developed and piloted an innovative evaluation tool to assess the performance of health services provision for communicable diseases in three sub-Saharan African countries. Material and methods: A total of 42 indicators, 14 per each communicable disease care pathway, were developed. A sub-set of 23 indicators was included in the evaluation process. The communicable diseases care pathways were developed for Tuberculosis, Gastroenteritis, and HIV/AIDS, including indicators grouped in four care phases: prevention (or screening), diagnosis, treatment, and outcome. All indicators were calculated for the period 2017–2019, while performance evaluation was performed for the year 2019. The analysis involved four health districts and their relative hospitals in Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Uganda. Results: Substantial variability was observed over time and across the four different districts. In the Tuberculosis pathway, the majority of indicators scored below the standards and below-average performance was mainly reported for prevention and diagnosis phases. Along the Gastroenteritis pathway, excellent performance was instead evaluated for most indicators and the highest scores were reported in prevention and treatment phases. The HIV/AIDS pathway indicators related to screening and outcome phases were below the average score, while good or excellent performance was registered within the treatment phase. Conclusions: The bottom-up approach and stakeholders' engagement increased local ownership of the process and the likelihood that findings will inform health services performance and quality of care. Despite the intrinsic limitations of data sources, this framework may contribute to promoting good governance, performance evaluation, outcomes measurement and accountability in settings characterised by multiple healthcare service providers. This paper evaluates the development impacts of migration and remittances in migrant source communities by applying insights from the New Economics of Labor Migration (NELM) theory to Ethiopia’s migration. Using household survey data, we empirically evaluate how household participation in migration arises and so that the subsequent labor losses and the influx of remittances affect income sources and asset accumulation of smallholder farm households. To account several econometric issues and consistently estimate the impacts of migration and remittances, we adopted three-stage least-squares method complemented with endogeneity and multicollinearity test. Besides, using logistic and multinomial logistic regressions respectively, we estimate the determinants of the household migration decision to have migrants, as well as the probability of the household to send out temporary or permanent migrants. Findings suggest that larger and wealthier households are less likely to have migrant family members, while households living below the poverty line, as well as villages with the highest unemployment rate, are the most likely to have both temporary and permanent migrants. However, a rise in months spent out of agriculture has a significant negative effect on crop income and asset accumulation, but only for permanent migration. By contrast, the influx of remitted income from migrants has led to increased crop income and asset values in the form of land and livestock holdings. Finally, this manuscript provides more comprehensive evidence by showing the net-returns of migration in terms of initial lost-labor effects and the positive developmental impacts that it produces varied for households with different types of migration and production conditions. Objective: As elsewhere, due to scarcity of data and limited awareness of HIV infection, especially in older children, the HIV epidemic among Ethiopian children appears neglected in national programs (children ART coverage is of only 12% in 2013). This paper estimates the country burden of HIV in older children and investigates the prevalence of HIV in orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) households. Design/Methods: We analyzed national HIV data for Ethiopia, using Spectrum/ Estimation and Projection Package (EPP) and primary data on children living in households with at least one HIV-positive adult in the Amhara and Tigrai regions. Descriptive analysis of the age and sex distribution of HIV-positive OVC in Ethiopia was performed. Results: Our Spectrum/EPP analysis estimated the population of HIV-positive children under 15 years old to be 160,000 in 2013. The majority of children (81•6%) were aged five to 14 years. The estimated number of orphans due to AIDS was 800,000. The empirical data from almost 10,000 OVC under 18 years showed 11•9% were HIV-positive, the majority of whom were between five and 10 years old with no significant difference between males and females. Conclusions: There is a large population of children living with HIV in Ethiopia, the magnitude of which not previously recognized. The majority were vertically infected and never identified nor linked into treatment. OVC represent a reachable group which could account for a substantial proportion of the HIV infected older children. Emergence and spread of malaria vectors resistant to the available insecticides required a new and efficacious insecticide. Residual efficacy of Fludora® Fusion was evaluated against insecticide susceptible Anopheles arabiensis in ten circular huts similar to the residential huts. Fludora® Fusion WP-SB 56.25, FICAM WP80 and Clothianidin WG70 were sprayed, by experienced technician, on interior wall surfaces: paint, dung, smooth mud, and rough mud. WHO cone bioassays were carried out a month after spraying and thereafter on monthly intervals for 12 months. Knockdown was recorded at 60 minutes and mortality at 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours holding time post-exposure. Fludora Fusion induced 100% An. arabiensis mortality during the first four months post-treated on all surface types at 24 hours holding time post-exposure. Its activity remained over 80% from the fifth to the twelfth month post-treated on the surfaces with the exception of two assessment points, at seventh month and eleventh month, on paint and smooth mud surfaces. FICAM induced 100% mortality rate during the first 4 months and 92% mortality during the fifth month post-treatment on painted surfaces. Its activity was over 96% mortality 1-month post-treatment on smooth mud and rough mud surfaces and 92% mortality 2-month post-treatment on dung surfaces. Clothianidin caused 89% and 86% mortality 1-month post-treatment on smooth mud and rough mud surfaces. Background: There are a number of previous studies that investigated undernutrition and its determinants in Ethiopia. However, the national average in the level of undernutrition conceals large variation across administrative zones of Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to determine the geographic distribution of composite index for anthropometric failure (CIAF) and identify the influencing factors it' might be more appropriate Methods: We used the zonal-level undernutrition data for the under-five children in Ethiopia from the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) dataset. Different spatial models were applied to explore the spatial distribution of the CIAF and the covariates. Results: The Univariate Moran's I statistics for CIAF showed spatial heterogeneity of undernutrition in Ethiopian administrative zones. The spatial autocorrelation model (SAC) was the best fit based on the AIC criteria. Results from the SAC model suggested that the CIAF was positively associated with mothers' illiteracy rate (0.61, pvalue 0.001), lower body mass index (0.92, pvalue = 0.023), and maximum temperature (0.2, pvalue = 0.0231) respectively. However, the CIAF was negatively associated with children without any comorbidity (-0.82, pvalue = 0.023), from families with accessibility of improved drinking water (-0.26, pvalue = 0.012), and minimum temperature (-0.16). Conclusion: The CIAF across the administrative zones of Ethiopia is spatially clustered. Improving women's education, improving drinking water, and improving child breast feeding can reduce the prevalence of undernutrition (CIAF) across Ethiopian administrative zones. Moreover, targeted intervention in the geographical hotspots of CIAF can reduce the burden of CIAF across the administrative zones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ethiopia introduced its flagship poverty-targeted social protection program, the Productive safety net program (PSNP), in 2005 and Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI) in 2011. Although both programs operate in several districts with some overlaps, evidence is scarce on how these large-scale programs jointly affect the food security of vulnerable groups. This study examines the impacts of a combination of these programs on food security outcomes among female-headed households in a chronically food-insecure and drought-prone district. Cross-sectional data were collected from 365 female-headed households selected through multi-stage sampling technique and analyzed using Inverse-probability-weighted regression adjustment (IPWRA) strategy to assess the effect of the programs on food security. The results show that while 63.6% of sample households are enrolled in CBHI and 48.8% are beneficiaries of PSNP's conditional cash transfer (CCT) component, membership in both social protection programs was 38.9%. The IPWRA analysis finds that inclusion in the CCT combined with CBHI, on average, increased dietary diversity score by 0.918 (95% CI 0.779–1.057) and food consumption score by 0.576 (95% CI 0.464–0.688). It also reduced household food insecurity access scale by 8.658 (95% CI -9.775 – -7.541). In all assessments, a combination of CBHI and CCT always produced results of a larger magnitude than each of CBHI and CCT alone. The findings provide evidence of the potentials of integrating social protection programs to increase food security outcomes among the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in a developing country. Background: Currently, the biggest issue facing the entire world is mental health. According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, nearly one-fourth of the community is experiencing any of the mental illness categories. Most of the cases were treated in religious and traditional institutions, which the community most liked to be treated. However, there were very limited studies conducted to show the level of mental health literacy among traditional healers. Aims: The study aimed to assess the level of mental health literacy and its associated factors among traditional healers toward mental illness found in Northeast, Ethiopia from September 1-30/2022. Method: A mixed approach cross-sectional study design was carried out on September 130, 2022, using simple random sampling with a total sample of 343. Pretested, structured questionnaires and face-to-face interviews were utilized for data collection. The level of Mental Health Literacy (MHL) was assessed using the 35 mental health literacy (35-MHLQ) scale. The semi-structured checklist was used for the in-depth interview and the FGD for the qualitative part. Data was entered using Epi-data version 4.6 and, then exported to SPSS version 26 for analysis. The association between outcome and independent variables was analyzed with bivariate and multivariable linear regression. P-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data, and the findings were then referenced with the findings of the quantitative data. Results: The findings of this study showed that the sample of traditional healers found in Dessie City scored a total mean of mental health literacy of 91.81 ± 10:53. Age (β = -0.215, 95% CI (-0.233, -0.05), p = 0.003, informal educational status (β = -5.378, 95% CI (-6.505, -0.350), p = 0.029, presence of relative with a mental disorder (β = 6.030, 95% CI (0.073, 7.428),p = 0.046, getting information on mental illness (β = 6.565, 95% CI (3.432, 8.680), p = <0.001, and mental health training (β = 4.889, 95% CI (0.379, 6.455), p = 0.028 were variables significantly associated with mental health literacy. Traditional healers provide a variety of explanations for the causes of mental illness, including biological, psychological, and supernatural ones. Conclusion: The mean score of the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) is lower among traditional healers compared with other studies. Age, informal educational status, family history of mental illness, getting information on mental illness, and mental health training were significantly associated with mental health literacy. Background: Skin-to-skin contact care practice is placing a naked baby on the mother's chest with no cloth separating them, in a prone position covered by a cloth or blanket. It improves the survival of newborns by preventing hypothermia, improving breastfeeding, and strengthening mother-to-child bonding. Nevertheless, it remains under-practiced in many resource-constrained settings. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to explore the spatial variation and determinants of mother and newborn skin-to-skin contact care practices in Ethiopia. Method: The study was done using the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey data. A weighted sample of 10417 mothers who gave live birth before the five-year survey was extracted for the analysis. Arc GIS version 10.3 and SaTscan version 10.0.2 were used for the spatial analysis. A multilevel mixed logistic regression model was fitted to identify factors associated with skin-to-skin contact care practices of mothers and newborns. Finally, a statistically significant association was declared at a P-value of < 0.05. Result: In this study, skin-to-skin contact care practice of mothers and newborns was non-random across Ethiopia with Moran's I: 0.48, p < 0.001. The most likely significant primary and secondary clusters were found in Addis Ababa (RR = 2.39, LLR = 116.80, p <0.001) and Dire Dewa and Harari (RR = 2.02, LLR = 110.45, p <0.001), respectively. In this study, place of delivery (AOR = 12.29, 95%CI:10.41, 14.54), rich wealth index (AOR = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.05,1.59), medium wealth index (AOR = 1.38, 95% CI:1.17, 1.68), having 1–3 antenatal care visits(AOR = 1.86,95% CI: 1.56, 2.29), having ≥4 antenatal care visits (AOR = 1.93,95% CI: 1.56, 2.39), initiating breastfeeding within the first hour (AOR = 1.75,95% CI:1.49,2.05) and media exposure (AOR = 1.20,95%CI 1.02,1.41) were factors associated with skin to skin contact care practice of mothers and newborns. Conclusion: This study concludes that the Skin-to-skin contact care practices of mother and newborn is not random in Ethiopia. Therefore, the implementation of essential newborn care packages should be regularly monitored and evaluated, particularly in the cold spot areas of skin-to-skin contact care practices. Background: Traditional herbal medicine (THM) is frequently used in pediatric populations in many low-income countries as a form of healthcare and has been associated with a range of adverse events, including liver toxicity, renal failure, and allergic reactions. Despite these concerns, its impact on multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) risk has not been thoroughly investigated. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the incidence and predictors of MODS in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in Ethiopia, with a focus on the association between THM use and the risk of MODS. Methods: This was a single-center prospective cohort study conducted at a PICU in the university of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. The study enrolled eligible patients aged one month to 18 years admitted to the PICU during the study period. Data on demographic characteristics, medical history, clinical and laboratory data, and outcome measures using standard case record forms, physical examination, and patient document reviews. The predictors of MODS were assessed using Cox proportional hazards models, with a focus on the association between traditional herbal medicine use and the risk of MODS. Results: A total of 310 patients were included in the final analysis, with a median age of 48 months and a male-to-female ratio of 1.5:1. The proportion and incidence of MODS were 30.96% (95% CI:25.8, 36.6) and 7.71(95% CI: 6.10, 9.40) per 100-person-day observation respectively. Renal failure (17.74%), neurologic failure (15.16%), and heart failure (14.52%) were the leading organ failures identified. Nearly one-third of patients (32.9%) died in the PICU, of which 59.8% had MODS. The rate of mortality was higher in patients with MODS than in those without. The Cox proportional hazards model identified renal disease (AHR = 6.32 (95%CI: 3.17,12.61)), intake of traditional herbal medication (AHR = 2.45, 95% CI:1.29,4.65), modified Pediatric Index of Mortality 2 (mPIM 2) score (AHR = 1.54 (95% CI: 1.38,1.71), and critical illness diagnoses (AHR = 2.68 (95% CI: 1.77,4.07)) as predictors of MODS. Conclusion: The incidence of MODS was high. Renal disease, THM use, mPIM 2 scores, and critical illness diagnoses were independent predictors of MODS. A more than twofold increase in the risk of MODS was seen in patients who used TMH. Healthcare providers should be aware of risks associated with THM, and educate caregivers about the potential harms of these products. Background: Family planning decision making is defined as women´s ability to determine the family planning methods that she wanted to use through the process of informed decision making. Despite the availability and accessibility of family planning methods, the utilization rate is not more than 41% in Ethiopia. Evidence and experts have consistently show that women decisions making ability on family planning method they desired to use is one of the possible reasons for this slow rate of family planning use increment. In consideration of this and further motives family planning use decision making has become one of the top sexual and reproductive health related sustainable development agendas. Hence, this study aimed at determining the level, trend and spatial distribution of family planning use decision making among married women and identify factors affecting it. Methods: This study was based on Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA) 2020 cross sectional national survey data. Married women who are currently using or recently used family planning method were included in this study. Frequency was computed to describe the study participants while chi-square statistics was computed to examine the overall association of independent variable with family planning use decision making. To identify predictors of family planning use decision making multinomial logistics regression was employed. Results were presented in the form of percentage and relative risk ratio with 95% CI. Candidate variables were selected using p value of 0.25. Significance was declared at p value 0.05. Results: This study revealed that one in two women (51.2%; 95% CI: 48.8%-53.6%) decide their family planning use by themselves while 37% (36.8%; 95% CI: 34.5%-39.2%) decide jointly with their husband and/or partner. Women alone family planning use decision making increased significantly 32.8% (95% CI: 29.4%, 36.4%) in 2014 to 51.2% (95% CI: 48.8%, 53.6%) in 2020. It also shows variation across regions from scanty in Afar and Somali to 63.6% in Amhara region and 61.5 Addis Ababa. Obtaining desired family planning method was found significantly to improve women alone and joint family planning use decision making. Women who have perceive control and feeling if they get pregnant now were found to be positively associated with women alone family planning use decision making. Discussion with husband, his feeling towards family planning were found positively to influence family planning use joint decision making. Moreover, women religion, was found reducing the likelihood of both women alone and joint family planning use decision making while experiencing side effect reduces the likelihood of joint family planning use decision making. Conclusion: Half of the women independently decide their family planning use which calls up on further improvement. Family planning use decision making ability is expected to be improved by efforts targeted on husbands' approval on wife's family planning use, discussion on family planning use with husband/partner, improving women psychosociological readiness and trust on her own to decide her desired family planning method; informing the possible side effects and what to do when they encountered during their family planning use visit. In addition, influencing women on the use of family planning via religious leader will help much in this regard. Monitoring and evaluating reproductive health policy 2021 to2025 and addressing bottlenecks which hinder women decision making health service use is hoped to improve women family planning use decision making. Background: Public health problems related to tuberculosis (TB) remain substantial globally, particularly in resource-limited countries. Determining TB treatment outcomes and identifying contributing factors are the basic components of the TB control strategy. In Ethiopia, different studies have been done on treatment outcomes and multiple associated factors, and there is also a little information on the effect of nutritional status on TB treatment outcomes. So there is a need for comprehensive research that examines the combined effects of multiple factors along with nutritional status. Methods: A five-year institution-based retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at Mizan Tepi University Teaching Hospital, South West Ethiopia. This study included all tuberculosis patients who were documented in the TB registration and had known treatment outcomes at the treatment facility between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2020. Data was collected through a pretested structured data extraction checklist. Data were entered into Epidata version 3.1 and analyzed through SPSS version 22. Multiple logistic regression was employed to assess the association between dependent and independent variables. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result: Of the total 625 TB patients, 283 (45.3%), 175 (28%), and 167 (26.7%) had smear-positive, extra-pulmonary, and smear-negative tuberculosis, respectively. The majority of study participants had normal weight (62.2%), were in the age group of 15–44 (67.4%), were new cases (73.8%), and were from urban areas (69.4%). About 32.2% of cases were HIV-positive. The overall unsuccessful treatment rate was 25%. From the total unsuccessful treatment rates, the highest proportion was a death rate of 90 (14.4%), followed by a treatment failure of 56 (9%). Being female (AOR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.2–2.5), HIV positive (AOR = 2.7, 95% CI: 1.9–4.1), undernutrition (BMI<18.5kg/m2) (AOR = 1.9, 95% CI: 1.3–2.9), and smear-negative pulmonary TB (AOR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1–2.5) were independent predictors of unsuccessful treatment outcomes. Conclusion: The treatment success rate in the study area is very poor. Poor treatment outcomes were associated with undernutrition, female gender, HIV positivity and smear-negative pulmonary TB. So, continuous and serious supervision and monitoring of directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) program accomplishment, early detection of HIV and TB, prompt anti TB and antiretroviral treatment initiation and adherence, enhanced nutritional assessment, and counseling services need to be strengthened to improve treatment outcomes. Background: The presence of meconium-stained amniotic fluid is one of the causes for birth asphyxia. Each year, over five million neonatal deaths occur worldwide because of meconium-stained amniotic fluid and other causes, of which 90% are due to birth asphyxia. The aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of meconium-stained amniotic fluid and associated factors among women who gave birth in North Shoa Zone Hospitals, Amhara Region, Ethiopia, 2022. Materials and methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was employed. We used 610 women who gave birth at North Shoa Zone Hospitals, Amhara region, Ethiopia. The study was conducted from June 8 to August 8, 2022. Recruitment for the study was made using a multistage sampling procedure. Fifty percent of the study hospitals were randomly selected, and proportional allocation was done. Participants were selected from the sampling frame, labour and delivery register book, using a systematic random sampling approach. The first person was selected at random, while the remaining individuals were selected at every two "K" intervals across all hospitals. An interview-administered structured questionnaire and chart review checklist were used to gather the data that were entered into Epi-Data Version 4.6 and exported to SPSS. Logistics regression was employed, and a p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result: The magnitude of meconium-stained amniotic fluid was 30.3%. Women with a normal hematocrit level were 83% less likely to develop meconium-stained amniotic fluid. Women whose mid-upper arm circumference value was less than 22.9cm (AOR = 1.9; 95% CI: 1.18–3.20), obstructed labour (AOR = 3.6; 95% CI: 1.48–8.83), prolonged labour ≥ 15 hr (AOR = 7.5; 95% CI: 7.68–13.3), premature rapture of membrane (AOR = 1.7; 95% CI: 3.22–7.40), foetal tachycardia (AOR = 6.2; 95% CI: 2.41–16.3), and Bradycardia (AOR = 3.1; 95% CI: 1.93–5.28) showed a significant association with meconium-stained amniotic fluid. Conclusion: The present study revealed that the magnitude of meconium-stained amniotic fluid in North Shoa Zone is nearly one-third. A normal hematocrit level is a preventive factor for meconium-stained amniotic fluid, and a MUAC value <22.9 cm, obstructed and prolonged labour, PROM, bradycardia, and tachycardia are factors associated with meconium-stained amniotic fluid. Introduction: HIV testing is the entry point to HIV prevention, care and treatment and needs continuous evaluation to understand whether all social groups have accessed services equally. Addressing disparities in HIV testing between social groups results in effective and efficient response against HIV prevention. Despite these benefits, there was no previous study on inequality and determinants over time in Ethiopia. Thus, the objective of this research was to examine socioeconomic inequality in individuals undertaking HIV testing over time, allowing for the identification of persistent and emerging determinants. Methods: Data sources for the current study were the 2011 and 2016 Ethiopian Demographic Health Surveys. The 2016 population health survey is the one that Ethiopia used to set national AIDS response strategies; there was no other recent survey with HIV/AIDS-related indicators in Ethiopia. The final sample size for the current study was 28,478 for the year 2011 and 25,542 for the year 2016. The concentration curve and Erreygers' concentration index were used to estimate socioeconomic inequality in HIV testing. Subsequently, decomposition analysis was performed to identify persistent and emerging contributors of socioeconomic inequality. Generalized linear regression model with the logit link function was employed to estimate the marginal effect, elasticity, Erreygers' concentration index (ECI), and absolute and percentage contributions of each covariate. Results: The concentration curve was below the line of equality over time, revealing the pro-rich inequality in HIV testing. The inequality was observed in both 2011 (ECI = 0.200) and 2016 (ECI = 0.213). A household wealth rank had the highest percentage contribution (49.2%) for inequality in HIV testing in 2011, which increased to 61.1% in 2016. Additional markers include listening to the radio (13.4% in 2011 and 12.1% in 2016), education status (8.1% in 2011 and 6.8% in 2016), and resident (-2.0% in 2011 and 6.3% in 2016). Persistent determinants of individuals undertaking HIV testing were age 20–34 years, geographic region, education status, marital status, religion, income, media exposure (listening to the radio, reading newspaper, watching television), knowledge about HIV/AIDS, and attitudes towards people living with HIV. Age between 35 and 44 years and urban residence emerged as new associated factors in 2016. Conclusions: The higher HIV testing coverage was among individuals with higher socioeconomic status in Ethiopia. Socioeconomic inequality amongst individuals undertaking HIV testing was diverging over time. Household wealth rank, mass media exposure, education status, and resident took the largest share in explaining the disparity in individuals undertaking HIV testing between the lower and higher income groups. Background: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Klebsiella species are among public health important bacteria that cause infections difficult to treat with available antimicrobial agents. Infections with Klebsiella lead to high morbidity and mortality in developing countries particularly in patients admitted to the intensive care unit. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of MDR Klebsiella species from different human specimens using studies conducted in Ethiopia from 2018−2022. Methods: We have systematically searched online databases such as PubMed/Medline, Google Scholar, Hinari, African journals online, Web of Science, Cochrane, and grey literature (Addis Ababa University and Hawassa University) to identify studies reporting the proportion of MDR Klebsiella species in Ethiopia. Published articles were selected based on the Preferred Reporting Item of Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA). R-Studio version 4.2.3 was used to conduct pooled prevalence, heterogeneity test, and publication bias. A binary random effect model was used to determine the pooled prevalence. Heterogeneity was checked with the inconsistency index (I2). Publication bias was checked with a funnel plot and Egger test. Sensitivity analysis was conducted with leave-one-out analysis. Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tool for prevalence studies was used to check the quality of each article. Results: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, 40 articles were included in which 12,239 human specimens were examined. Out of the total specimens examined, 721 Klebsiella species were isolated and 545 isolates were reported to be MDR Klebsiella species. The prevalence of MDR Klebsiella species ranged from 7.3%-100% whereas the pooled prevalence of MDR Klebsiella species was 72% (95% CI: 63 − 82%, I2 = 95%). Sub-group analysis based on region revealed the highest prevalence of MDR from Addis Ababa (97%) and the least from the Somali region (33%); whereas sub-group analysis based on the specimen type indicated the highest prevalence was from blood culture specimens 96% and the least was from other specimens (ear and vaginal discharge, and stool) (51%). Conclusion: Our finding indicated a high prevalence of MDR Klebsiella species found in different human specimens. The prevalence of MDR Klebsiella varies across regions in Ethiopia, age, the type of specimens, source and site of infection. Therefore, integrated action should be taken to reduce the prevalence of MDR Klebsiella species in regional states and focus on clinical features. Background: Age-appropriate vaccination or vaccine timeliness is the administering of vaccines on the specified schedule of immunization. One of the qualities of the immunization program is an age-appropriate vaccine, it has become an ignored indicator of program performance. Even though age-appropriate vaccination is critical for child health, there are no national-level studies to generate conclusive and tangible evidence about the determination of timely vaccination in Ethiopia. Objective: To assess the spatial pattern and associated factors of timely vaccination in Ethiopia using EDHS-2016 data: A multilevel and spatial analysis. Method: Community based cross-sectional study design was employed from 18 January to 27 June 2016. To select the participants, two-stage cluster sampling was employedin the Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey 2016 data. Permission was obtained via online request by explaining the aim of this particular study from DHS international. A statistical package for social science-21 software was used for data cleaning, recoding, and analysis. Arc GIS 10.3 software was used to show the spatial variation of age-appropriate vaccination practices. A generalized linear mixed-effect model was used. For all models, intra-class correlation, a proportional change in variance, the log-likelihood test, and the Akaike information criterion were calculated. The best model was selected by the lowest value Akaike information criterion. Variables with a p-value less than 0.05 and a 95% confidence level were considered for the statistically significant association. Result: The spatial distribution of age-appropriate vaccination practice in Ethiopia was non-randomly distributed with the global Moran's I value of 0.22 (p-value <0.001). The prevalence of age-appropriate vaccination practice in Ethiopia was 33.8%. Women who receive ≥ 2 TT vaccines (AOR = 1.48; 1.22, 1.79), women who lived in rural residences (AOR = 0.77; 0.62, 0.96), gave birth at a health facility (AOR = 1.2; 1.12, 1.37), ANC follow up (AOR = 174; 1.45, 2.1), richest (AOR = 1.65; 1.15, 2.37), richer (AOR = 1.72; 1.3, 2.22), middle-level income (AOR = 1.65; 1.16, 2.36), poorer (AOR = 1.47; 1.11, 1.96) were the factors of age-appropriate vaccination practice. Conclusion: The spatial distribution of age-appropriate vaccination practice in Ethiopia was non-randomly distributed across the regions. Age-appropriate vaccination practice was low in Ethiopia. Wealth index, usual caretaker of the child, ANC utilization, history of TT vaccination, place of delivery, and residence were associated with age-appropriate vaccination practice. Background: Healthcare waste produced in healthcare activities entails higher risk of infection and injuries than municipal waste. In developing countries healthcare waste has not received much attention and has been disposed of together with municipal wastes. Modern method of disposal of healthcare waste have been introduced to most healthcare institutions mismanagement and increased in production in public health centres in Ethiopia is important issues. The aim of the study was to assess the type of healthcare waste generation and quantification in selected public health centres in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: An institution based cross-sectional study were conducted from January to February 2018. Fifteen health centres in Addis Ababa City Administration were selected for this study. Data were collected by using by different color plastic bags (Black plastic bags for non-hazardous wastes, Yellow plastic bags for hazardous wastes and Yellow safety box for needles and Red bags for pharmaceutical wastes and toxic wastes). The collected wastes were measured by weighing scale and were written to data entry sheet. To assure the data quality calibration of weighing scale was made by the standard weight every morning. EPI INFO TM7 and IBM SPSS were used for data entry, cleaning and analysis. Results: The mean healthcare waste generation was 10.64+5.79Kg/day of which 37.26% (3.96+2.20Kg/day) was general waste and 62.74% (6.68+4.29) was hazardous waste from the studies health centres. Total hazardous waste; sharps, infectious, pathological and pharmaceutical wastes constitutes mean (±SD) 0.97 ±1.03, 3.23 ± 2.60, 2.17±1.92 and 0.25 ±0.34 kg/day respectively. Healthcare waste 29.93% and 0.32% were generated from delivery and post-natal case team and nutrition and growth monitoring case team respectively. The annual mean+ SD of healthcare waste generation rate per health centres were 3807.53+ 2109.84 Kg/year. Conclusion: The finding in this study showed there was an increased in hazardous healthcare waste in amount as compared to the WHO standard 85% non-hazardous waste and 10% hazardous waste and 5% toxic wastes. The healthcare waste management practices about segregation, collection, transportation and disposal at the source is crucial to decrease in quantity. Introduction: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a long-term kidney disease among diabetic patients. It is the leading cause of end-stage renal failure. In Ethiopia, DN affects the majority of diabetic populations, but there were inconsistent findings about the determinant factors across the studies. Methods: We have accessed studies using PubMed, Embase, EBSCO, Web of Science, OVID, and search engines including Google and Google Scholar published up to June 2023. The study populations were diabetic patients with nephropathy. The quality of each included article was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale. The odds ratios of risk factors were pooled using a random-effect meta-analysis model. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochrane Q statistics and I-Square (I2). The publication bias was detected using the funnel plot and/or Egger's test (p< 0.05). Trim and fill analysis was carried out to treat the publication bias. The protocol has been registered with the reference number CRD42023434547. Results: A total of sixteen articles were used for this reviewed study. Of which, eleven articles were used for advanced age, ten articles for duration of diabetic illness, ten articles for poor glycemic control, and eleven articles for having co-morbid hypertension. Diabetic patients with advanced age (AOR = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.03–120, I2 = 0.0%, p = 0.488), longer duration of diabetic illness (AOR = 1.23, 95% CI = 1.05–1.45, I2 = 0.0%, p = 0.567), poor glycemic control (AOR = 2.57, 95% CI: 1.07–6.14; I2 = 0.0%, p = 0.996), and having co-morbid hypertension (AOR = 4.03, 95% CI: 2.00–8.12, I2 = 0.0%, p = 0.964) were found to be factors associated with DN. Conclusions: The findings of the study revealed that diabetic patients with advanced age, longer duration of diabetic illness, poor glycemic control status, and co-morbid hypertension were the determinant factors of DN. Therefore, treatment of co-morbid hypertension and high blood glucose and regular screening of renal function should be implemented to detect, treat, and reduce the progression of DN. Furthermore, healthcare workers should give due attention to diabetes with advanced age and a longer duration of diabetes illness to prevent the occurrence of DN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: For those living with HIV/AIDS, malnutrition is a significant issue everywhere, but it is particularly prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. A nutritional support program is becoming a more and more common strategy to prevent malnutrition in HIV-positive persons. Thus, this study aimed to assess nutritional treatment outcomes and their predictors among adult HIV-positive undernourished individuals in West Guji Zone healthcare facilities. Method: A facility-based retrospective cohort study was conducted among 348 randomly selected adult HIV- positive patients in the West Guji Zone healthcare facilities between January 2018 and December 2022. Data were collected using the data extraction tool. Entered into Epi Data version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 26 for analysis. The Kaplan-Meier survival curve and log-rank test were used to predict the time to recovery and to compare survival curves across categorical variables. A Cox proportional hazard regression model was fitted to identify an independent predictor of the recovery rate. Statistical significance was declared at a p-value of < 0.05. Results: In the final analysis 348 undernourished HIV-positive persons were included. Based on preset exit criteria, approximately 198, 56.9% of patients enrolled in the RUTF program were able to recovered, with an incidence of 9.83 (95% CI: 3.12, 13.44) per 100 person-month observations. Being divorced (AHR = 0.21; 95% CI: 0.06, 0.69) and being in the WHO advanced stage (AHR = 0.42; 95% CI: 0.23, 0.79) was a negative predictor. Being in the age range of 18–29 and 30–39 and having a working functional status (AHR = 2; 95% CI: 1.25, 3.23) were positive predictors. Conclusion: Nutritional recovery in this study lower than WHO Sphere requirements. Age between 18 and 39 and working functional status were good indicators of nutritional recovery, whereas advanced WHO clinical stage and divorced marital status were negative predictors. Background: The recent recognition of the multidimensional features of frailty has emphasised the need for individualised multicomponent interventions. In the context of sub-Saharan Africa, few studies have examined: a) the frailty status of the older population; b) the level of frailty and its health implications and; c) the impact of a nurse-led intervention to reduce frailty. Objectives: This study aims to design, implement, and evaluate a nurse-led intervention to reduce frailty and associated health consequences among older people living in Ethiopia. Methods: The study will be conducted on 68 older persons using a pre-, post-, and follow-up single-group quasi-experimental design. Residents of Ethiopia, ≥60 years and living in the community will be invited to participate in a 24-week program designed to decrease frailty and associated health consequences. Data will be collected at three-time points: baseline, immediately after the intervention, and 12 weeks post-intervention. To determine the effect of the intervention, changes in frailty, nutritional status, activities of daily living, depression and quality of life scores will be measured. To measure the effect of a nurse-led intervention on the level of frailty among older people a generalised linear model (GLM) using repeated measures ANOVA will be used. Statistical significances will be set at p-values < 0.05. Discussion: The results of this study will determine the impact of a nurse-led intervention to reduce frailty amongst community-dwelling older people living in Ethiopia. Background: Low levels of diphtheria, tetanus toxoid, pertussis (DPT3) immunization services utilization and high deaths among under five children are concentrated in economically and socially disadvantaged groups, especially in low and middle-income countries, including Ethiopia. Hence, the aim of this study is to assess levels and trends in DPT3 immunization services utilization in Ethiopia and identify inequalities. Methods: This study used data from 2000, 2005, 2011, 2016, and 2019 Ethiopian Demographic Health Surveys (EDHSs). The 2019 updated version of the world health organization (WHO's) Health Equity Assessment Toolkit (HEAT) software was used to analyze the data. Six measure of inequality was calculated: ratio (R), differences (D), relative index of inequality (RII), slope index of inequality (SII), population attributable fraction (PAF) and population attributable risk (PAR). The findings were disaggregated by the five equity stratifiers: economic status, education, place of residence, regions and sex of the child. Results: This study showed an erratic distribution of DPT3 immunization services utilization in Ethiopia. The trends in national DPT3 immunization coverage increased from 21% in (2000) to 62% in (2019) (by 41 percentage points). Regarding economic inequality, DPT3 immunization coverages for the poorest quintiles over 20 years were 15.3% (2000), and 47.7% (2019), for the richest quintiles coverage were 43.1 (2000), and 83.4% (2019). However, the service utilization among the poorest groups were increased three fold compared to the richest groups. Regarding educational status, inequality (RII) show decreasing pattern from 7.2% (2000) to 1.5% in(2019). Concerning DPT3 immunization inequality related to sex, (PAR) show that, sex related inequality is zero in 2000, 2005 and in 2019. However, based on the subnational region level, significance difference (PAR) was found in all surveys: 59.7 (2000), 51.1 (2005), 52.2 (2011), 42.5 (2016) and 30.7 (2019). The interesting point of this finding was that, the value of absolute inequality measures (PAR) and (PAF), are shown a decreasing trends from 2000 to 2019, and the gap among the better of regions and poor regions becoming narrowed over the last 20 years. Concerning individual and community level factors, household wealth index, education of the mother, age of respondent, antenatal care, and place of delivery show statically significant with outcome variable. Keeping the other variables constant the odds of an average child in Amhara Region getting DPT3 immunization was 54% less than for a child who lived in Addis Ababa (OR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.34 – 0.63). Respondents from households with the richest and richer wealth status had 1.21, and 1.26 times higher odds of DPT3 immunization services utilization compared to their counterpart (OR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.04 -1.41) and (OR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.13 – 1.40) respectively. Conclusion: We conclude that DPT3 immunization coverage shows a growing trend over 20 years in Ethiopia. But inequalities in utilization of DPT3 immunization services among five equality stratifies studied persisted. Reasons for this could be complex and multifactorial and depending on economic, social, maternal education, place of residence, and healthcare context. Background: Undernutrition remains a serious public health problem in developing countries, including Ethiopia. In particular, street adolescents are more at risk for undernutrition because they are the most underprivileged population. However, there is a paucity of information about undernutrition among street adolescents in Ethiopia. Objective: To assess the prevalence of undernutrition (stunting and thinness) and factors associated with undernutrition among street adolescents in Adama town, Oromia regional state, Ethiopia, 2023. Method: A community-based cross sectional study was conducted among 358 street adolescents from January 15–30, 2023. A convenience sampling technique was used to select the required sample size. A structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data from the respondents. The collected data were checked, coded, entered into Epidata 4.6 and exported to Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 25. Both Bivariable and Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the factors that are associated with thinness and stunting. P values below 0.05 at the 95% confidence interval were considered indicative of a statistically significant association. Finally, statements, graphs, tables and charts were used for result presentation. Result: This study revealed that, the prevalence of undernutrition was 47.2%. Thinness and stunting accounted for 20.4% and 34.1% respectively and 7.3% both thinness and stuting. Age (adusted odd ratio = 1.41; 95% confidence interval: 1.17–1.71), skipped one or more meals per day ((adusted odd ratio = 3.50; 95% confidence interval: 1.23–9.94), drinking unprotected water source ((adusted odd ratio = 3.23; 95% confidence interval: 1.49–6.98) and use of mastish ((adusted odd ratio = 2.91; 95% confidence interval: 1.19–7.12) were factors statistically associated with thinness. Being skipped one or more meals per day ((adusted odd ratio = 4.14; 95% confidence interval: 1.87–9.14), washing hands before meals ((adusted odd ratio = 0.46; 95% confidence interval: 0.26–0.81) and moderate depression ((adusted odd ratio = 2.93; 95% confidence interval: 1.05–8.15) were factors significantly associated with stunting. Conclusion and recommendation: In conculusion, the prevalence of undernutrition (thinness, stunting or both together) was high among street adolescents. Background: Unmet need refers to the gap between women's desires and contraception use to monitor their fertility level. According to the data, unplanned pregnancies are more likely to result in miscarriage and other obstetric difficulties, have poor maternal health care usage, and have a higher risk of having babies who are underweight. Information on the trend of unmet family planning needs in Ethiopia is scarce. The aim of this study was to examine the trend and determinants of unmet need for family planning among married or in union women in Ethiopia from 2000 to 2016. Method: Cross-sectional study design from secondary data was performed. Data for the study was obtained from four consecutive Ethiopian Demographic Health Surveys 2000 to 2016. The survey employs a nationally representative sample of households using a multistage stratified sampling technique. A descriptive analysis was done to see the trend in unmet need. Multivariable, multilevel logistic regression was performed to assess individual and community-level determinants. An adjusted odds ratio (AOR) at a 95% confidence interval and a p-value of 0.05 were used to declare the level of significance. Result: Unmet need declined by 40.2%, from 37.3% to 22.3%, from 2000 to 2016. Rural (AOR = 1.42; 95% CI: 1.27–1.59), number of living children > = 5 (AOR = 1.14 (1.04–1.24), age at first marriage > = 18 years (AOR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.09–1.21), knowing at least one method of Family Planning (FP) (AOR = 1.57; 95% CI: 1.43–1.72), and no previous use of FP (1.27 (1.20–1.36) were associated with increased unmet need. While women between the ages of 20 and 24 (AOR = 0.71; 95% CI: 0.64–0.79), 25–29 (AOR = 0.62; 95% CI: 0.55–0.70), 40–44 (AOR = 0.43; 95% CI: 0.39–0.50), 45–49 (AOR = 0.21; 95% CI: 0.18–0.24), the richest wealth index (AOR = 0.88; 95% CI: 0.80–0.96. Conclusion: The level of unmet need has decreased significantly in Ethiopia over the past 16 years. Age, educational level, media exposure, number of living children, age at first marriage, parity, previous use of FP, knowledge of FP, wealth index, regional setting, residence (rural), and survey year all have an association with an unmet need for family planning. In Ethiopia, tef is one of the major staple crops used as a basic raw material for food development such as stable bread called injera. Studies reported that imbalanced N fertilizer reduces the overall deliciousness of grains. Nowadays nitrogenous fertilizers are considered as the source of variation for the quality of injera, Ethiopian traditional flat bread. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted to assess the effects of N fertilizer rates (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 kg N ha-1) on grain nutrition and sensory quality of injera of three tef varieties of (Kora, Boset, and Asgori). The experiment was conducted in main cropping season in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications and Di-ammonium Phosphate was used in the same dose. Crop attribute parameters were determined using standard methods. Sensory quality and color of injera were determined by panelists and injera eye software respectively. Results showed that only protein content increased with nitrogen rates, while carbohydrate decreased significantly at (P < 0.05). Kora at the control plot (K0) had better color, flavor, texture, and taste values of injera, but they decreased with nitrogen rates. Injera from white tef varieties had a better acceptance as compared with Asgori red tef variety. Injera eye software indicated that the color of injera was significantly affected by varieties. Kora had a higher (55.74) lightness value followed by Boset (54.71), and Asgori (51.26). Injera from the Asgori variety had a maximum red color. Introduction: Premature birth is the leading cause of under-5 child mortality, accounting for 18%. More attention is needed for premature babies. Myths, misconceptions, and negative attitudes stigmatize premature births and slow prevention and care efforts. In Ethiopia, studies have been conducted on premature birth and its risk factors. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding the perceived causes of premature birth, caring aspects, and community challenges. This qualitative study aims to address these research gaps. Methods: This interpretive Husserlian phenomenological study was conducted from January 1–30, 2022. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 32 participants for focus group discussions and 10 participants for in-depth interviews. Participants included women, grandmothers, grandfathers, men, traditional birth attendants, and traditional healers. Interview and focus group data were analyzed using NVivo 12 Plus software and a thematic content analysis approach. Results: In this study, the participants recognized premature babies by physical features such as transparent and bloody bodies, small and weak bodies, a limited range of motion, and bizarre behaviors. They perceived the causes of premature birth to be being young, carrying heavily loaded materials, accidents, illnesses, sin, social influence, and witchcraft. Participants provide warmth to premature babies by wearing cotton wool, making skin-to-skin contact, exposing to sunlight, and wrapping them in clothes. They also feed them boiled alcohol, muk, and formula, as well as fresh cow milk and butter. They frequently bathe the babies, wash and change their clothes, limit visits, and provide physical protection. The main challenges that the women faced were difficulty feeding and bathing the babies, limited social participation, psychosocial and economic impact, spirituality, and husband negligence. Conclusions: The community has a gap in providing care for premature babies, and women with premature babies face many challenges. Therefore, we need to raise awareness of accurate information about the causes and care of premature babies, and we need to support women who have premature babies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Non-optimal infant and young child feeding practices (IYCFP) are linked to malnutrition and infant mortality in poor countries, notably in Ethiopia. The majority of growth stalls occur within the first two years of life; hence, there is a need to discover interventions that enhance appropriate IYCFP for improving nutritional outcomes during this critical period. Using the experience of mothers who have come up with solutions to their IYCFP problems to educate others, is a potential pathway to initiate and sustain behavioral changes in resource-limited areas. However, such interventions are not widely implemented in Ethiopia. Objective: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a positive deviance approach (PDA) to improve appropriate feeding and nutritional status in South West region, Ethiopia. Methods: A cluster randomized controlled trial will be conducted to compare the effect of positive deviant intervention versus routine health education. The intervention will be provided by positive deviant mothers based on uncommon practices that potentially benefit IYCFP will be identified. Training of the trainers manual on counselling and supporting non-positive deviant mothers based on the uncommon practices identified and WHO IYCFP guidelines will be provided for facilitating change. Culturally appropriate and scientifically acceptable operational packages of information will be developed. A total of 516 mothers will be recruited from 36 zones. The intervention arm will receive 12 demonstration sessions in groups and every 15th day home visit by positive deviant mothers. Data will be entered into epi data version 3.1 and analyzed using STATA version 16.0. All analyses will be done as intention-to-treat. We will fit the mixed effects linear regression model for continuous outcomes and mixed effects linear probability model for the binary outcomes in the study zone as a random intercept to estimate study arm difference (intervention vs. routine health education) adjusted for the baseline values of the outcome and additional relevant covariates. Discussion: We expect that the trial will generate findings informing IYCFP and nutritional policies and practices in Ethiopia. Introduction: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a worldwide public health problem and major human and legal rights abuses of women. It affects the physical, sexual, and psychological aspects of the victims therefore, it requires complex and multifaceted interventions. Health providers are responsible for providing essential healthcare services for IPV victims. However, there is a lack of detailed information on whether or not health providers are ready to identify and manage IPV. Therefore, this study aimed to assess health providers' readiness and associated factors in managing IPV in public health institutions at Hawassa, Ethiopia. Method: Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted through a simple random sample of 424 health providers. Data was collected with an anonymous questioners using physician Readiness to Manage Intimate Partner Violence Survey (PREMIS) tool. Linear regression analysis was used to examine relationships among variables. The strength of association was assessed by using unstandardized β with 95% CI. Results: The mean score of perceived provider's readiness in managing IPV was 26.18± 6.69. Higher providers age and providers perceived knowledge had positive association with provider perceived readiness in managing IPV. Whereas not had IPV training, absence of a protocol for dealing with IPV management, and provider attitude had a negative association with provider perceived readiness in managing IPV. Conclusion and recommendation: This study reviled that health providers had limited perceived readiness to manage IPV. Background: Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 (STEC O157:H7) is a zoonotic pathogen that causes diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis, and hemolytic uremic syndrome worldwide. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, antibiotic susceptibility, and associated risk factors of STEC O157:H7 among diarrheic patients and their cattle. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among diarrheic patients and their cattle in Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia from December- 2020 to June- 2022. A total of 1,149 diarrheic patients and 229 cattle were included in the study. STEC O157:H7 detection was done using culture, latex agglutination test, and polymerase chain reaction on diarrheic stool samples and recto-anal mucosal swabs of cattle. Antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed using disk diffusion techniques. Risk factors association were identified using binary and multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: The overall prevalence of STEC O157:H7 in diarrheic patients and their cattle was 11.1% (128/1149) and 14.4% (33/229) respectively. High percentage of the study subjects were found in under-five children (34.5%). Age less than 5 (AOR: 4.02, 95%CI:1.608–10.058,P = 0.003), and greater than 64 years old (AOR:3.36, 95% CI:1.254–8.986, P = 0.016), presence of diarrheic patient in the house (AOR:2.11, 95%CI:1.309–3.390, P = 0.002), availability of cattle in the house (AOR:2.52, 95%CI:1.261–5.049, P = 0.009), and habit of consuming raw foods (AOR:4.35, 95%CI:2.645–7.148, P = 0.000) were risk factors. Antibiotic resistance was shown in 109(85.2%), and 31(93.9%) isolates from diarrheic patients and their cattle respectively. The highest levels of antibiotic resistance were found to tetracycline (54.7%, 69.7%) in diarrheic patients and their cattle respectively. Multiple drug resistance was also observed among 56(43.8%) and 11(33.3%) isolates in diarrheic patients and their cattle respectively. Conclusion: Our study showed high prevalence of STEC O157:H7 in diarrheic patients and their cattle. Introduction: Physical activity and exercise during pregnancy have paramount importance for both the mother and fetus. Regardless of the benefits of exercise during pregnancy, significant proportion of women usually opt sedentary lifestyle during pregnancy. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to synthesis evidences on knowledge, attitude, and practice towards antenatal physical exercise among pregnant women in Ethiopia. Methods: The systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted on knowledge, attitude, practice, and associated factors towards antenatal physical exercise among pregnant women in Ethiopia. The systematic review and meta-analysis protocol was registered on PROSPERO website with registration number CRD42023444723. Articles were searched on international databases using medical subject heading and keywords. After ensuring eligibility, data were extracted using Microsoft excel and imported to STATA 17 for analysis. Cochran Q test and I2 statistics were used to check presence of heterogeneity. Weighted Inverse variance random effect model was used to estimate the pooled level of knowledge, attitude, and practice on antenatal physical exercise among pregnant women in Ethiopia. Funnel plot and egger's test were used to check presence of publication bias. Results: A total of 11 studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of adequate knowledge, favorable attitude and good practice towards antenatal physical exercise were 46.04% with 95% CI (44.45%-47.63%), 43.71%, 95% CI (41.95%-45.46%) and 34.06, 95% CI (20.04%-48.08%) respectively. Good knowledge AOR 2.38 95% CI(1.80–3.14), unfavorable attitude AOR 0.43 95% CI (0.32–0.58), having no pre-pregnancy habit of physical exercise AOR 0.44 95 CI (0.24–0.79) and having diploma or above education status AOR 3.39 95% CI (1.92–5.98) were significantly associated with practice of antenatal physical exercise. Conclusion: The level of knowledge, attitude and practice towards antenatal physical exercise among pregnant women was far below the recommended level in Ethiopia. Knowledge, attitude, education status and pre-pregnancy habit of physical exercise were significantly associated factors with antenatal physical exercise practice. Background: Anemia is a significant public health problem in HIV/AIDS patients worldwide. This study is aimed to determine the prevalence of anemia and its risk factors among HIV-infected adults in Sawla General Hospital, southern Ethiopia. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study involving HIV-infected adults was conducted in ART clinic of Sawla General Hospital from April 01 to May 31, 2019. A systematic random sampling technique was employed to recruit the study participants. Socio-demographic and clinical data were collected using a structured questionnaire and checklist. Hemoglobin concentration from venous blood was determined by HemoCue® 301 analyzer. Descriptive and inferential statistics, by Statistical Package for Social Science version 26.0, were applied; p-values ≤ 0.05 in the multivariable logistic regression analysis were considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 220 HIV-infected adults participated in this study. The prevalence of anemia was 38.6%, from which 90.6, 7.1, and 2.3% are mild, moderate, and severe anemia, respectively. Anemia among HIV-infected adults was significantly associated with CD4 cell count below 200 cells/mm3 (AOR: 4.32; 95% CI: 2.10–8.86), clinical stage III or above (AOR: 4.20; 95% CI: 1.06–16.62), five or more years duration of HIV infection (AOR: 2.32; 95% CI: 1.08–4.94) and BMI below 18.5 kg/m2 (AOR: 3.82; 95% CI: 1.83–8.00). Conclusion: Anemia is a moderate public health problem among the study population. Longer duration of HIV infection, advanced clinical stage, lower CD4 cell count, and BMI are risk factors for anemia. Background: The poor practice of tuberculosis infection control may increase the risk of transmission of tuberculosis in healthcare settings. Thus, this study aimed to determine the pooled magnitude of good tuberculosis infection control practice and associated factors among healthcare workers in Ethiopia. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) checklist guideline was followed for this review and meta-analysis. The electronic databases (Pub Med, Cochrane Library, Google scholar and grey literatures) were searched to retrieve articles by using keywords. The Joanna Briggs Institute Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument was used to assess the quality of studies. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic. The meta-analysis with a 95% confidence interval using STATA 17 software was computed to present the pooled practice and odds ratio of the determinant factors. Publication bias was assessed visually by inspecting the funnel plot asymmetry and using statistical tests using the eggers and begs test. Results: Seven studies were included in this meta-analysis, with a total of 3256 health workers. The overall pooled magnitude of good tuberculosis infection control practice was 46.44% (95% CI: 34.21%, 58.67%). In subgroup analysis, the highest practice was in Addis Ababa 51.40% (95% CI: 47.40, 55.40%) and the lowest prevalence of tuberculosis infection control practice was in Amhara region 40.24% (95% CI: 15.46, 65.02%). Working in TB clinics (AOR; 7.42, 95% CI: 3.89, 14.13) and good TB related knowledge (AOR; 4.40, 95% CI: 1.76, 10.97) were the significant predictors of good TB infection control practice. Conclusions: Only less than half of the health care workers had good practice of TB infection control. Working in TB clinics and having good TB related knowledge were statistically significant predictors of TB infection control practice. Periodic shifting of health care workers to work in TB clinics and an emphasis on TB infection control related skill based training was recommended to increase the TB infection control practice. Pesticides are chemicals used to control different types of pests. Though pesticides played a role in improving the quantity and quality of production, they have been threatening ecosystems and posed effects on humans in different parts of the world. Unfortunately, there were no studies made about the effects of pesticide residues on ecosystems and consumers in the Fogera District of Amhara Region, Ethiopia. Hence, the main objective of this study was to understand the knowledge, attitude, and practices of respondents about the effects of pesticide residues on ecosystems and consumers. A cross-sectional survey complemented by focus group discussions and field observations was used to gather the required data for the study. The close-ended data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, logistic regressions, and independent t-test, and data from open-ended questions were grouped and summarized based on their similarities. The findings of the study confirmed that there was significant knowledge, attitude, and practices difference between farmers and consumers about the effects of pesticide residues on ecosystems and humans. Farmers used highly toxic pesticides to control pests and improve the glossiness of vegetables and khat. Though they didn't use the sprayed vegetables for their home consumption, some of the farmers deliberately supplied pesticide-sprayed vegetables without worrying about the negative effects of the pesticides on the consumers. There were also fishing practices from rivers after intoxicating the fish using the pesticide sprayed feed. This, in turn, might poison individuals who consume the fish. In general, pesticide application practices and consumption of pesticide-sprayed foodstuffs and surface water might pose serious health risks to ecosystems and humans. To minimize the negative effects of pesticides, rigorous awareness-raising on the effects and management of pesticides, enforcement of laws, delineation of the pesticide free buffer zone for waters, the establishment of a clear pesticide supply chain to the end users, ecosystem assessment and food safety monitoring schemes are highly required. Background: World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that every pregnant woman receive quality care throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. It is estimated that institutional delivery could reduce 16% to 33% of maternal deaths. Despite the importance of giving birth at a health institution, in Ethiopia, according to the Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey report, nearly half of the ANC-booked mothers gave birth at home. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of home delivery among antenatal care-booked women in their last pregnancy during the era of COVID-19. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 30 to April 29, 2021. A simple random technique was employed to select 770 participants among women booked for antenatal care. Interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to collect the data. A binary logistic regression model was fitted. Adjusted odds ratios with its respective 95% confidence interval were used to declare the associated factors. Results: The prevalence of home delivery was 28.8% (95% CI: 25.7, 32.2). Rural residence (AOR = 2.02, 95% CI: 1.23, 3.34), unmarried women (AOR = 11.16, 95% CI: 4.18, 29.79), husband education (AOR = 2.60, 95% CI: 1.72, 3.91), not being involved in the women's development army (AOR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.01, 2.65), and fear of COVID-19 infection (AOR = 3.86, 95% CI: 2.31, 6.44) were significantly associated factors of home delivery. Conclusion: Even though the government tried to lower the rate of home delivery by accessing health institutions in remote areas, implementing a women's development army, and introducing maternal waiting home utilization, nearly one in every three pregnant women gave birth at home among ANC booked women in their last pregnancy. Thus, improving the husband's educational status, providing information related to health institution delivery benefits during antenatal care, and strengthening the implementation of the women's development army, particularly among rural and unmarried women, would decrease home childbirth practices. Introduction: Data regarding patients presenting with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2) illness have not adequately been documented which provides distinct insights into low-resource settings like Ethiopia. Thus, the study aimed to compare epidemiological, clinical and laboratory profiles of patients presenting with acute respiratory syndrome illness in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. Methods: We used a comparative cross-sectional study design among patients with SARS-CoV-2 illness at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from October 2020 to September 2021. Using a structured questionnaire a consecutive sampling technique was applied to collect socio-demographic data. Additionally, nasal swabs were collected to confirm SARS-CoV-2 infection using a Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction. Blood samples were also collected from the participants for laboratory profiles (hematological tests like; white blood cell count, hematocrit, and platelet count; and biochemical and enzymatic tests like; aspartate transaminase (AST), creatinine, etc) analysis. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 23.0 and p-values ≤0.05 were considered as statistically significant. Results: Of the total 413 participants presenting with SARS-CoV-2 illness, 250 (60.5%) participants tested positive for COVID-19 disease. COVID-19 patients were less likely to use an alcohol-based method of hand washing (12.5% vs 87.5%; p = 0.048). The COVID-19 patients had a higher proportion of headache (67.3% vs 32.7%, p = 0.001), sore throat (72.5% vs 27.5%, p = 0.001), and loss of sense of taste (74.4% vs 25.6%, p = 0.002). Patients with COVID-19 have significantly higher neutrophil than their counterparts (68.2% vs 31.8%; p = 0.001). Similarly, creatinine (64.9% vs 35.1%, p = 0.001) from renal function and alkaline phosphatase (66.8% vs 33.2%, p = 0.046) in the liver function tests were significantly higher in the COVID-19 patients. Conclusion: Our findings suggest the need to substantially consider headache, sore throat, and loss of taste as potential clinical diagnostic symptoms for early screening and testing. Background: Malaria is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children under the age of five worldwide. Although various malaria elimination measures have been implemented over the past decades, malaria remains a serious threat to public health, especially in tropical and subtropical areas. Ethiopia has set targets for eliminating malaria by 2030. No research has been conducted in the study area concerning malaria among children, who are the most malaria-prone segment of a community. The purpose of this study was to assess malaria prevalence and the factors associated with it among children under five years of age who attended the Sheko Health Center, Southwest Ethiopia, from June 1 to October 30, 2022. Materials and methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was employed from June 1 to October 30, 2022, at the Sheko Health Center. Capillary blood samples were collected from 286 randomly selected symptomatic children. Data on socio-demographics and associated factors were collected using a pre-tested structured questionnaire, and data on parents' and guardians' knowledge about malaria was recorded on Excel 2016 Spreadsheets after interviewing them, and their responses were presented by a frequency table. Data were entered into Epi Data Manager (v4.0.2.101) and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. Associated factors of malaria were analyzed using bivariate and multivariable logistic regression, and statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. Result: Overall, 23.4% (95% CI = 18.6–28.8%) malaria infection was recorded among the children whose blood samples were examined, with Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, and mixed infections (both species) representing 52.2%, 34.3%, and 13.4% of the cases, respectively. The majority of the parents or guardians believed that malaria is transmissible but could be prevented, and 80% of them considered mosquito bites to be the main mode of malaria transmission. Insecticide-treated net (ITN) was mentioned as a malaria prevention strategy by more than half of the respondents, while indoor residual spraying (IRS) was considered only by 19.6%. Based on multivariable logistic regression analysis, a significant association was found in children between the ages of 12 and 36 months (adjusted odds ratio = 5.050; 95% CI: 1.964–12.982), children who lived in rural areas (adjusted odds ratio = 2.901; 95% CI: 1.439–5.845), and children who did not use ITN the past two weeks before sample collection (adjusted odds ratio = 3.341; 95% CI: 1.646–6.781). Conclusion: This study revealed a high malaria prevalence among children aged under five years. Attention must be paid to improving the coverage of the ITN and its use in the study area, which could help reduce the risk of mosquito bites. Health education for the guardians of the children could also help to raise awareness about the prevention and control strategies for malaria transmission and further reduce the impact of the disease. Reducing child undernutrition is a key social policy objective of the Ethiopian government. Despite substantial reduction over the last decade and a half, child undernutrition is still high; with 48 percent of children either stunted, underweight or wasted, undernutrition remains an important child health challenge. The existing literature highlights that targeting of efforts to reduce undernutrition in Ethiopia is inefficient, in part due to lack of data and updated information. This paper remedies some of this shortfall by estimating levels of stunting and underweight in each woreda for 2014. The estimates are small area estimations based on the 2014 Demographic and Health Survey and the latest population census. It is shown that small area estimations are powerful predictors of undernutrition, even compared to household characteristics, such as wealth and education, and hence a valuable targeting metric. The results show large variations in share of children undernourished within each region, more than between regions. The results also show that the locations with larger challenges depend on the chosen undernutrition statistic, as the share, number and concentration of undernourished children point to vastly different locations. There is also limited correlation between share of children underweight and stunted across woredas, indicating that different locations face different challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Methodologies to measure gender-based violence (GBV) have received inadequate attention, especially in humanitarian contexts where vulnerabilities to violence are exacerbated. This paper compares the results from individual audio computer-assisted self-administered (ACASI) survey interviews with results from participatory social mapping activities, employed with the same sample in two different post-conflict contexts. Eighty-seven internally displaced adolescent girls from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and 78 Sudanese girls living in Ethiopian refugee camps were interviewed using the two methodologies. Results revealed that the group-based qualitative method elicited narratives of violence focusing on events perpetrated by strangers or members of the community more distantly connected to girls. In contrast, ACASI interviews revealed violence predominantly perpetrated by family members and intimate partners. These findings suggest that group-based methods of information gathering frequently used in the field may be more susceptible to socially accepted narratives. Specifically, our findings suggest group-based methods may produce results showing that sexual violence perpetrated by strangers (e.g., from armed groups in the conflict) is more prevalent than violence perpetrated by family and intimate partners. To the extent this finding is true, it may lead to a skewed perception that adolescent GBV involving strangers is a more pressing issue than intimate partner and family-based sexual violence, when in fact, both are of great concern. Background: Intensive care units are units where healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are common and antimicrobial resistance rates are increasing. Microbial contamination in hospital environment plays an important role in the development of HAIs. Intervention-based improvements in infection prevention and control at national and facility level are critical for the containment of antimicrobial resistance and prevention of HAIs. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the distribution of multidrug-resistant and carbapenemase-producing critical gram negative bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter species) and their antibiotic resistance in intensive care unit environmental surfaces at the University of Gondar and Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospitals. Methods: This was multicenter hospital-based cross sectional study. Environmental samples were swabbed from all intensive care units using a normal saline moistened-sterile cotton tip stick. Bacteria culturing and antibiotic susceptibility testing were performed following standard microbiological techniques. Selected meropenem-resistant isolates were phenotypically assessed for carbapenemase production using modified and simplified carbapenem inactivation methods. Results: From a total of 384 environmental samples analyzed, 126 (32.8%) showed growth and 162 isolates were identified. K. pneumoniae (79/162, 48.8%) was the commonest isolate followed by Acinetobacter species (51/162, 31.5%), E. coli (19/162, 11.7%) and P. aeruginosa (13/162, 8.0%). Multidrug-resistant and carbapenemase-producing isolates were detected on most hospital environment surface types, especially from the baby bed sets and incubators. The most common multidrug-resistant and principal carbapenemase producer was K. pneumoniae, with rates of 71(89.9%) and 24(85.7%), respectively. Conclusion: This study revealed the distribution of multidrug-resistant and carbapenemase-producing critical gram negative bacteria in the environment of intensive care unit. Rotavirus is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality due to acute gastroenteritis among children under five years globally. Early diagnosis of rotavirus infection minimizes its spread and helps to determine the appropriate management of diarrhea. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of EpiTuub® Fecal Rotavirus Antigen Rapid Test Kit for the diagnosis of rotavirus infection among diarrheic children under five years in Ethiopian healthcare settings. A total of 537 children with diarrhea were enrolled from three referral hospitals in Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia. The samples were tested using one-step RT-PCR and EpiTuub® Fecal Rotavirus Antigen Rapid Test Kit (KTR-917, Epitope Diagnostics, San Diego USA) in parallel. Diagnostic performance of the rapid test kit was evaluated using the one-step RT-PCR as a gold standard. The sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of the rapid test kit were determined. Moreover, the agreement of the rapid test kit with one step RT-PCR was determined by kappa statistics and receiver operators' curve (ROC) analysis was done to assess the overall diagnostic accuracy of the rapid test kit. Fecal Rotavirus Antigen Rapid Test Kit has shown a sensitivity of 75.5% and specificity of 98.2%. The kit was also found to have 89.9% and 95.0% positive and negative predictive values, respectively. The Fecal Rotavirus Antigen Rapid Test Kit has shown a substantial agreement (78.7%, p = 0.0001) with one-step RT-PCR. The overall accuracy of the Fecal Rotavirus Antigen Rapid Test Kit was excellent with the area under the ROC curve of 86.9% (95% CI = 81.6, 92.1%) (p =.0001). Thus, Fecal Rotavirus Antigen Rapid Test is a sensitive, specific, user-friendly, rapid, and equipment-free option to be used at points of care in Ethiopian health care settings where resource is limited precluding the use of one step RT-PCR. Background: According to UNSD, World Bank, and WHO, a 2020 joint report, 3 billion people who used solid fuel were found in low and middle-income countries. The burning of such type of fuel emits a variety of pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, CO, NO2, organic compounds, and other substances which a had wide range of public health problems The evidence from the WHO report, indoor air pollution was attributed to around 3.2 million deaths each year in 2020, and more than 237 000 deaths of children under the age of five. This study aims to investigate solid fuel prevalence, predictors, and spatial variation in Ethiopia. Method: This study was conducted in Ethiopia based on the fifth Ethiopian Demographic and Health Surveys 2019 dataset. 8,663 households were successfully interviewed at a response rate of 99%. Weighted by sampling weight was done to do a reliable statistical analysis. Fuel type was used as the outcome variable whereas sex of household head (male or female), wealth index (poor, middle, and rich), educational status (no education, primary, secondary, higher), having television and radio, a separate room used as a kitchen, were individual predictor variables and community level education(lower/higher), residence(urban/rural), community level media exposure (exposed/unexposed), region (pastoralist, semi-pastoralist, Agrarian, and City administration) were community level variables. All the above analyses were conducted using Excel Microsoft 2016, STATA 14, ArcGIS 10.7, and SaTScan 10.1 software. Results: The majority (72.62%) of household heads were males. The overall national level of solid fuel use was 87.13% (95% CI (86.4%-87.82%)). From this 87.13% of solid fuel use, 18.60% accounts for urban and 68.53% for rural parts of the country. Educational status, having television, accessing electricity, and wealth index were individual-level variables community-level education, type of residence, and region were community-level variables significantly associated factors towards solid fuel use in our study. Global (z-score = 33.109144, P-value <0.0001), local (hot spot, cluster, and outlier), and Spatial Scan statistical analyses revealed that there was a major geographical variation in solid fuel use across Ethiopia. Conclusion: Based on this finding, the prevalence of solid fuel use was higher in Ethiopia. Educational status, having television, accessing electricity, and wealth index were individual-level variables and community-level education, type of residence, and region were community-level variables statistically significant factors in determining fuel choice for cooking. There was significant spatial variation in the prevalence of solid-fuel use across the country. In order to addressing such heavily dependent on solid fuel use, responsible bodies like health policy makers, national and international organizations, and public health researchers should work on showing health problems of solid fuel use and the means of increasing clean fuel use. Background: Prelabor rupture of membrane defined as the rupture of fetal membranes before the beginning of uterine contractions, is a common complication of pregnancy and the leading cause of preterm birth. In Ethiopia, the prevalence of prelabor rupture of membrane varied significantly between settings due to variations in risk factors. Besides, there was no study conducted using primary data, particularly in the Jimma zone, Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to identify determinants of prelabor rupture of membrane among pregnant women attending governmental hospitals in the Jimma zone, Oromia region, Ethiopia. Methods: An institutional-based unmatched case-control study design was conducted from October 15 to December 15, 2021, at four governmental hospitals. A consecutive sampling technique was used to select 316 participants (79 cases and 237 controls). Women with prelabor rupture of the membrane were confirmed by history, sterile vaginal examination, and ultrasound as cases, and their counterparts as controls. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data on maternal (obstetric, medical, behavioral) and fetal-related characteristics. The data were entered into Epi Data version 4.6 and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Descriptive statistics, bi-variable, and multivariable logistic regression were computed. The odds ratio with a 95% confidence level was used, and the significance level was declared at a p-value < 0.05. Results: A total of 316 participants (79 cases and 237 controls) were included in this study. Pregnancy-induced hypertension (AOR = 3.06, 95% CI: 1.41–6.64), history of abortion (AOR = 3.67, 95% CI: 1.56–8.65), urinary tract infections (AOR = 2.61, 95% CI: 1.13–6.06), abnormal vaginal discharge (AOR = 2.65, 95% CI: 1.21–5.79), maternal khat chewing (AOR = 3.40, 95% CI: 1.70–6.80), mid-upper arm circumference less than 23 cm (AOR = 2.80, 95% CI: 1.51–5.19), and fetal presentation (breech) (AOR = 2.63, 95% CI: 1.10–6.28) were determinants of prelabor rupture of membrane among pregnant women. Conclusion: This study revealed that the aforementioned factors were found to be determinants of prelabor rupture of membrane among pregnant women. Therefore, hospitals should give focus to the early screening, diagnosis, and treatment of pregnancy-induced hypertension, urinary tract infection, and abnormal vaginal discharge to reduce the burden of prelabor rupture of membranes. Background: Utilization of modern contraceptives is a common healthcare challenge in Ethiopia. Prevalence of modern contraception utilization is varying across different regions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate Geographic weighted regression analysis of hotspots of modern contraceptive utilization and its associated factors in Ethiopia, using Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey 2016 data. Methods: Based on the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey data, a total weighted sample of 8,673 women was included in this study. For the Geographic Weighted Regression analysis, Arc-GIS version 10.7 and SaTScan version 9.6, statistical software was used. Spatial regression was done to identify factors associated with the hotspots of modern contraceptive utilization and model comparison was carried out using adjusted R2 and AICc. Variables with a p-value < 0.25 in the bi-variable analysis were considered for the multivariable analysis. Multilevel robust Poisson regression analysis was fitted for associated factors since the prevalence of modern contraceptive was >10%. In the multilevel robust Poisson regression analysis, the adjusted prevalence ratio with the 95% confidence interval was reported to declare the statistical significance and strength of association. Result: The prevalence of modern contraceptive utilization in Ethiopia was 37.25% (95% CI: 36.23%, 38.27%). Most of the hotspot areas were located in Oromia and Amhara regions, followed by the SNNPR region and Addis Ababa City administration. Single Women, poor Women, and more fertility preference were significant predictors of hotspots areas of modern contraceptive utilization. In the multivariable multilevel robust Poisson regression analysis, Women aged 25–34 years (APR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.79, 0.98), 35–49 years (APR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.61, 0.83), married marital status (APR = 2.59, 95% CI: 2.18, 3.08), Others religions (APR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.65, 0.89), number of children 1–4 (APR = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.37), no more fertility preference (APR = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.11, 1.32), Afar, Somali, Harari, and Dire Dawa: (APR = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.27, 0.67), (APR = 0.06, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.12), (APR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.62, 0.98), and (APR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.58, 0.98), respectively. Amhara region (APR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.13, 1.57), rural residence (APR = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.67, 0.95) High community wealth index (APR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.67, 0.91) were significantly associated with modern contraceptive utilization. Conclusion and recommendation: There were significant spatial variations of factors affecting modern contraceptive use across regions in Ethiopia. Therefore, public health interventions targeting areas with low modern contraceptive utilization will help to increase modern contraception use considering significant factors at individual and community levels.The detailed map of modern contraceptive use cold spots among reproductive age group and its predictors could assist program planners and decision-makers to design targeted public health interventions.Government of Ethiopia must develop more geographic targeted strategies for improving socioeconomic status of women and availability & accessibility of health facilities in rural areas of the countries. Background: Stunting is a major public health concern, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Globally, nearly 149 million under-five children are suffering from stunting. Despite it can occur in all age groups, the impact is more severe among children age less than 24 months as this period is critical time of very rapid growth and development. Therefore, this review aimed to determine the pooled prevalence and determinants of stunting among children during this critical period in Ethiopia. Methods: The literature search was conducted using international electronic data bases (pumed, Google scholar, CINHAL, Hinari, open Google) and the hand search of reference lists of eligible articles. The presence of heterogeneity between studies was evaluated using Cochrane Q-test and I2 test statistics and sensitivity analysis was also checked. Small study effect was checked through graphical and statistical test. Sub-group analysis was performed to handle heterogeneity. Results: This study included 14 studies with a total sample size of 8,056 children. The overall pooled estimate of stunting was 35.01(95% CI: 24.73–45.28, I2 = 98.98%) in the country with the highest prevalence in Amhara region. Increased Child's age (OR = 3.83; 95% CI: 2.47–5.18, I2 = 97.76%), no maternal education (OR = 2.90; 95%CI: 1.59–4.20, I2 = 89.73%), no maternal postnatal follow up (OR = 1.81; 95% CI:1.51–2.10) less than four food diversity of the child (OR = 2.24;95%CI; 1.94–2.55,I2 = 21.55%), low maternal body mass index, failure to colostrum and exclusive breast feeding, two and more under five children in the household and poor wealth index of the family were significant factors of stunting. Conclusion and recommendations: The pooled prevalence of stunting among children during their critical time is high. Increased Child's age, no maternal education and no maternal postnatal follow up, less than four food diversity of the child, low maternal body mass index, failure to colostrum and exclusive breast feeding, two and more under five children in the household and poor wealth index of the family were determinants of stunting. Therefore, providing continuous maternal postnatal follow up, increase awareness of mothers on importance of colostrum and exclusive breast feeding, feeding of children the recommended variety of foods and at large to improve the wealth status of the households are crucial interventions to meet national and international targets of zero stunting in children less than 2 years. Background: Vaccines are playing a great role in prevention of many infectious diseases worldwide. Health professionals' knowledge towards vaccine cold chain management is an essential element of maintaining vaccine's potency at shelf and during transportation. Studies on health professionals' knowledge on vaccine cold chain management system and associated factors in Ethiopia have inconclusive findings. This systematic review and meta-analysis is aimed to produce the overall level of health professionals' knowledge on vaccine cold chain management system and to identify its associated factors in Ethiopia. Methods: Systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted on health professionals' knowledge on vaccine cold chain management in Ethiopia. It is registered under PROSPERO website with registration number CRD42023391627. Literature search was made on international data bases using medical subject heading and key words. Data were extracted using Microsoft excel and imported to STATA version 17 for analysis. Heterogeneity was checked using Cochrane Q test and I2 statistics. Weighted Inverse variance random effect model was used to estimate the pooled level of health professionals' knowledge on vaccine cold chain management. Publication bias was checked using funnel plot and using Egger's test. Results: A total of nine studies were included in the review. The pooled health professionals' good knowledge on vaccine cold chain management in Ethiopia is 49.92% with 95% CI (48.06–51.79). Having five years or more experience AOR 2.27 95% CI (1.72–2.99), being nurse AOR 3.03 95% CI (1.47–6.27), received on job training AOR 6.64 95% CI (4.60–9.57), EPI guideline available at facility AOR 2.46 95% CI (1.75.-3.48) are factors positively associated with health professionals' knowledge on vaccine cold chain management in Ethiopia. Conclusion: The pooled prevalence of good knowledge on vaccine cold chain management among health professionals is much lower than the expected level. Background: Complementary feeding (CF) is the period when exclusive breastfeeding ends and the introduction of a wide range of foods while breastfeeding should continue until the child is at least 24 months of age. Sub-optimal complementary feeding practices of infants and young children persist due to different factors, which include knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy of index mothers. Therefore, this study aimed to assess determinants of knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy towards complementary feeding among rural mothers with index child in rural Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted using multistage sampling techniques followed by systematic random sampling techniques. A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used. The Chi-square and Fisher's exact probability tests were used to assess the baseline differences in the CF knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy and socio-demographic characteristics of the intervention and control groups. An independent sample t-test was used to determine the mean differences. Multiple linear regression models were fitted to assess the predictors of complementary feeding knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy. All tests were two-tailed, and a statistically significant association was considered at a p-value ≤ 0.05. Results: Overall, 516 mothers were interviewed. 52.5% of the mothers had high complementary feeding (CF) knowledge, whereas only 47.7% and 38.9% had favorable attitude and high self-efficacy, respectively. The socio-demographic characteristics of the intervention and control groups were overall similar. However, there was a significant difference in the child's sex (p = 0.021) and age (p = 0.002). Independent t-tests found no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the mean score of CF knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy at baseline. Maternal educational status (p = 0.0001), number of ANC visits (p = 0.025), and CF information received (p = 0.011) were significant predictors of CF knowledge. Child sex (p = 0.021) and the number of ANC visits (p = 0.01) were significant predictors of CF attitude. Family size (p = 0.008) and household food security status (p = 0.005) were significant predictors of maternal CF self-efficacy. Conclusion: Overall, half of the mothers had high knowledge. Whereas maternal attitudes and self-efficacy toward CF were low. Maternal educational status, the number of ANC visits, and the CF information received were predictors of CF knowledge. Likewise, child sex and the number of ANC visits were predictors of CF attitude. Family size and household food security status were predictors of CF self-efficacy. These findings imply that nutrition intervention strategies are mandatory, particularly to enhance maternal knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy towards optimum complementary feeding.
