Quantification of bat communities and habitat heavily rely on non-invasive acoustic bat surveys the scope of which has greatly amplified with advances in remote monitoring technologies. Despite the unprecedented amount of acoustic data being collected, analysis of these data is often limited to simple species classification which provides little information on habitat function. Feeding buzzes, the rapid sequences of echolocation pulses emitted by bats during the terminal phase of prey capture, have historically been used to evaluate foraging habitat quality. Automated identification of feeding buzzes in recordings could benefit conservation by helping identify critical foraging habitat. I tested if detection of feeding buzzes in recordings could be automated with bat recordings from Ontario, Canada. Data were obtained using three different recording devices. The signal detection method involved sequentially scanning narrow frequency bands with the "Bioacoustics" R package signal detection algorithm, and extracting temporal and signal strength parameters from detections. Buzzes were best characterized by the standard deviation of the time between consecutive pulses, the average pulse duration, and the average pulse signal-to-noise ratio. Classification accuracy was highest with artificial neural networks and random forest algorithms. I compared each model's receiver operating characteristic curves and random forest provided better control over the false-positive rate so it was retained as the final model. When tested on a new dataset, buzzfindr's overall accuracy was 93.4% (95% CI: 91.5%– 94.9%). Overall accuracy was not affected by recording device type or species frequency group. In recent years, researchers have proven the effectiveness and speediness of machine learning-based cancer diagnosis models. However, it is difficult to explain the results generated by machine learning models, especially ones that utilized complex high-dimensional data like RNA sequencing data. In this study, we propose the binarilization technique as a novel way to treat RNA sequencing data and used it to construct explainable cancer prediction models. We tested our proposed data processing technique on five different models, namely neural network, random forest, xgboost, support vector machine, and decision tree, using four cancer datasets collected from the National Cancer Institute Genomic Data Commons. Since our datasets are imbalanced, we evaluated the performance of all models using metrics designed for imbalance performance like geometric mean, Matthews correlation coefficient, F-Measure, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Our approach showed comparative performance while relying on less features. Additionally, we demonstrated that data binarilization offers higher explainability by revealing how each feature affects the prediction. The number of input factors affects the prediction accuracy of a model. Factor screening plays an important role as the starting point for data input. The aim of this study is to explore the influence of different factor screening methods on the prediction results. Taking the 2014 landslide inventory of Jingdong County as an example, a landslide database was constructed based on 136 landslide events and 11 selected factors, which were randomly divided into a training dataset and a test dataset according to a ratio of 7:3. Four factor screening methods, namely, the information gain ratio (IGR), GeoDetector, Pearson correlation coefficient and multicollinearity test (MT), were selected to screen the factors. A random forest (RF) model was then used in combination with each factor set for landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM). Finally, accuracy validation was performed using confusion matrices and ROC curves. The results show that factor screening is beneficial in improving the accuracy of the resulting model compared to the original model. Second, the IGR_RF model had the highest AUC value (0.9334), which was higher than that of the MT_RF model without factor screening (0.9194), and the IGR_RF model predicted the most landslides in the very high susceptibility zone (51.22%), indicating the good prediction performance of the IGR_RF model. Finally, the factor weighting analysis revealed that NDVI, elevation and aspect had the greatest influence on landslides in Jingdong County and that curvature had the least influence on landslides. Objective: To explore if random forest (RF) model can predict the prognosis of hospital-acquired Klebsiella pneumoniae infection as well as traditional logistic regression(LR) model. Methods: A total of 254 cases of hospital-acquired Klebsiella pneumoniae infection in a tertiary hospital in Beijing from January 2016 to December 2020 were retrospectively collected. Appropriate influencing factors were selected by referring to relevant articles from the aspects of basic clinical information and contact history before infection, and divided into a training set and a test set. Both the RF and LR models were trained by the training set, and using testing set to compare these two models. Results: The prediction accuracy of the LR model was 87.0%, the true positive rate of the LR model was 94.7%; the false negative rate of the LR model was 5.3%; the false positive rate of the LR model was 35%; the true negative rate of the LR model was 65%; the sensitivity of the LR model for the prognosis prediction of hospital-acquired Klebsiella pneumoniae infection was 94.7%; and the specificity was 65%. The prediction accuracy of the RF model was 89.6%; the true positive rate of the RF model was 92.1%; the false negative rate of the RF model was 7.9%; the false positive rate of the RF model was 21.4%; the true negative rate of the RF model was 78.6%; the sensitivity of the RF model for the prognosis prediction of hospital-acquired Klebsiella pneumoniae infection was 92.1%; and the specificity was 78.6%. ROC curve shows that the area under curve(AUC) of the LR model was 0.91, and that of the RF model was 0.95. Conclusion: The RF model has higher specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy for the prognostic prediction of hospital-acquired Klebsiella pneumoniae infection than the LR model and has greater clinical application prospects. The NICHD BPD Outcome Estimator uses clinical and demographic data to stratify respiratory outcomes of extremely preterm infants by risk. However, the Estimator does not have an option in its pull-down menu for infants of Asian descent. We hypothesize that respiratory outcomes in extreme prematurity among various racial/ethnic groups are interconnected and therefore the Estimator can still be used to predict outcomes in infants of Asian descent. Our goal was to apply a machine learning approach to assess whether outcome prediction for infants of Asian descent is possible with information hidden in the prediction results using White, Black, and Hispanic racial/ethnic groups as surrogates. We used the three racial/ethnic options in the Estimator to obtain the probabilities of BPD outcomes for each severity category. We then combined the probability results and developed three respiratory outcome prediction models at various postmenstrual age (PMA) by a random forest algorithm. We showed satisfactory model performance, with receiver operating characteristics area under the curve of 0.934, 0.850, and 0.757 for respiratory outcomes at PMA 36, 37, and 40 weeks, respectively, in the testing data set. This study suggested an interrelationship among racial/ethnic groups for respiratory outcomes among extremely preterm infants and showed the feasibility of extending the use of the Estimator to the Asian population. Terrorism is a major problem worldwide, causing thousands of fatalities and billions of dollars in damage every year. To address this threat, we propose a novel feature representation method and evaluate machine learning models that learn from localized news data in order to predict whether a terrorist attack will occur on a given calendar date and in a given state. The best model (a Random Forest aided by a novel variable-length moving average method) achieved area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) of ≥ 0.667 (statistically significant w.r.t. random guessing with p ≤.0001) on four of the five states that were impacted most by terrorism between 2015 and 2018. These results demonstrate that treating terrorism as a set of independent events, rather than as a continuous process, is a fruitful approach—especially when historical events are sparse and dissimilar—and that large-scale news data contains information that is useful for terrorism prediction. Our analysis also suggests that predictive models should be localized (i.e., state models should be independently designed, trained, and evaluated) and that the characteristics of individual attacks (e.g., responsible group or weapon type) were not correlated with prediction success. There remains a limited understanding of the HIV prevention and treatment needs among female sex workers in many parts of the world. Systematic reviews of existing literature can help fill this gap; however, well-done systematic reviews are time-demanding and labor-intensive. Here, we propose an automatic document classification approach to a systematic review to significantly reduce the effort in reviewing documents and optimizing empiric decision making. We first describe a manual document classification procedure that is used to curate a pertinent training dataset and then propose three classifiers: a keyword-guided method, a cluster analysis-based method, and a random forest approach that utilizes a large set of feature tokens. This approach is used to identify documents studying female sex workers that contain content relevant to either HIV or experienced violence. We compare the performance of the three classifiers by cross-validation in terms of area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic and precision and recall plot, and found random forest approach reduces the amount of manual reading for our example by 80%; in sensitivity analysis, we found that even trained with only 10% of data, the classifier can still avoid reading 75% of future documents (68% of total) while retaining 80% of relevant documents. In sum, the automated procedure of document classification presented here could improve both the precision and efficiency of systematic reviews and facilitate live reviews, where reviews are updated regularly. We expect to obtain a reasonable classifier by taking 20% of retrieved documents as training samples. The proposed classifier could also be used for more meaningfully assembling literature in other research areas and for rapid documents screening with a tight schedule, such as COVID-related work during the crisis. Introduction: Assisted reproductive technology has been proposed for women with infertility. Moreover, in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles are increasing. Factors contributing to successful pregnancy have been widely explored. In this study, we used machine learning algorithms to construct prediction models for clinical pregnancies in IVF. Materials and methods: A total of 24,730 patients entered IVF and intracytoplasmic sperm injection cycles with clinical pregnancy outcomes at Taipei Medical University Hospital. Data used included patient characteristics and treatment. We used machine learning methods to develop prediction models for clinical pregnancy and explored how each variable affects the outcome of interest using partial dependence plots. Results: Experimental results showed that the random forest algorithm outperforms logistic regression in terms of areas under the receiver operating characteristics curve. The ovarian stimulation protocol is the most important factor affecting pregnancy outcomes. Long and ultra-long protocols have shown positive effects on clinical pregnancy among all protocols. Furthermore, total frozen and transferred embryos are positive for a clinical pregnancy, but female age and duration of infertility have negative effects on clinical pregnancy. Conclusion: Our findings show the importance of variables and propensity of each variable by random forest algorithm for clinical pregnancy in the assisted reproductive technology cycle. This study provides a ranking of variables affecting clinical pregnancy and explores the effects of each treatment on successful pregnancy. As the rate of percutaneous coronary intervention increases, in-stent restenosis (ISR) has become a burden. Random forest (RF) could be superior to logistic regression (LR) for predicting ISR due to its robustness. We developed an RF model and compared its performance with the LR one for predicting ISR. We retrospectively included 1501 patients (age: 64.0 ± 10.3; male: 76.7%; ISR events: 279) who underwent coronary angiography at 9 to 18 months after implantation of 2nd generation drug-eluting stents. The data were randomly split into a pair of train and test datasets for model development and validation with 50 repeats. The predictive performance was assessed by the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC). The RF models predicted ISR with larger AUC-ROCs of 0.829 ± 0.025 compared to 0.784 ± 0.027 of the LR models. The difference was statistically significant in 29 of the 50 repeats. The RF and LR models had similar sensitivity using the same cutoff threshold, but the specificity was significantly higher in the RF models, reducing 25% of the false positives. By removing the high leverage outliers, the LR models had comparable AUC-ROC to the RF models. Compared to the LR, the RF was more robust and significantly improved the performance for predicting ISR. Objectives: Triage is an essential emergency department (ED) process designed to provide timely management depending on acuity and severity; however, the process may be inconsistent with clinical and hospitalization outcomes. Therefore, studies have attempted to augment this process with machine learning models, showing advantages in predicting critical conditions and hospitalization outcomes. The aim of this study was to utilize nationwide registry data to develop a machine learning-based classification model to predict the clinical course of pediatric ED visits. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study used data from the National Emergency Department Information System on emergency visits of children under 15 years of age from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2017. The primary and secondary outcomes were to identify critically ill children and predict hospitalization from triage data, respectively. We developed and tested a random forest model with the under sampled dataset and validated the model using the entire dataset. We compared the model's performance with that of the conventional triage system. Results: A total of 2,621,710 children were eligible for the analysis and included 12,951 (0.5%) critical outcomes and 303,808 (11.6%) hospitalizations. After validation, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.991 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.991–0.992) for critical outcomes and 0.943 (95% CI 0.943–0.944) for hospitalization, which were higher than those of the conventional triage system. Conclusions: The machine learning-based model using structured triage data from a nationwide database can effectively predict critical illness and hospitalizations among children visiting the ED.
