The stability with respect to a peeling–ballooning mode (PBM) was investigated numerically with extended MHD simulation codes in JET, JT-60U and future JT-60SA plasmas. The MINERVA-DI code was used to analyze the linear stability, including the effects of rotation and ion diamagnetic drift ( *w i), in JET-ILW and JT-60SA plasmas, and the JOREK code was used to simulate nonlinear dynamics with rotation, viscosity and resistivity in JT-60U plasmas. It was validated quantitatively that the ELM trigger condition in JET-ILW plasmas can be reasonably explained by taking into account both the rotation and *w i effects in the numerical analysis. When deuterium poloidal rotation is evaluated based on neoclassical theory, an increase in the effective charge of plasma destabilizes the PBM because of an acceleration of rotation and a decrease in *w i. The difference in the amount of ELM energy loss in JT-60U plasmas rotating in opposite directions was reproduced qualitatively with JOREK. By comparing the ELM affected areas with linear eigenfunctions, it was confirmed that the difference in the linear stability property, due not to the rotation direction but to the plasma density profile, is thought to be responsible for changing the ELM energy loss just after the ELM crash. A predictive study to determine the pedestal profiles in JT-60SA was performed by updating the EPED1 model to include the rotation and *w i effects in the PBM stability analysis. It was shown that the plasma rotation predicted with the neoclassical toroidal viscosity degrades the pedestal performance by about 10% by destabilizing the PBM, but the pressure pedestal height will be high enough to achieve the target parameters required for the ITER-like shape inductive scenario in JT-60SA. 26. Formation of edge transport barrier in the ergodic field layer of helical divertor configuration on the Large Helical Device

- Abstract
On the Large Helical Device (LHD), low to high confinement (L-H) transition and edge transport barrier (ETB) formation were observed in the low beta regime (?dia< 1%, ?dia: volume-averaged beta derived from diamagnetic measurement) as well as in relatively high beta regime (>1.5%). In most of ETB plasmas electron density preferentially increases in the edge region without a substantial rise of the edge electron temperature. The ETB zone develops inside the ergodic field layer calculated in the vacuum field. The ETB formation strongly destabilizes edge coherent modes such as m/n= 2/3 or 1/2 (m, n: poloidal and toroidal mode numbers), because the plasma edge region is in the magnetic hill. The ETB is partially destroyed by the combination of these edge MHD modes and ELM-like activities. For a particular experimental condition, the forced generation of a sizable m/n= 1/1 magnetic island near the edge by application of external field perturbations facilitates the L-H transition at a lower electron density and suppresses edge MHD modes and ELM-like activities to lower levels.

27. Characteristics of H-mode-like discharges and ELM activities in the presence of ?/2? = 1 surface at the ergodic layer in LHD

- Abstract
Magnetic configurations of LHD are characterized by the presence of chaotic magnetic field, the so-called ergodic layer, surrounding the core plasma. H-mode-like discharges have been obtained at an outwardly shifted configuration of Rax= 4.00?m with a thick ergodic layer, where the ?/2? = 1 position is located in the middle of the ergodic layer. A clear density rise and a reduction of magnetic fluctuation were observed. ELM-like H? bursts also appeared with a radial propagation of density bursts. These H-mode-like discharges can be triggered by changing PNBI(<12?MW) from three beams to two beams in a density range (4-8) × 1013cm?3. The ELM-like bursts vanished with a small change of the edge rotational transform. A precise profile measurement of the edge density bursts confirmed that ELM-like bursts occur at the ?/2? = 1 position.

28. Processes arising in the edge and diverted plasmas during ITB formation in the U-3M torsatron

- Abstract
Spontaneous changes in confined plasma parameters have been observed recently in the l= 3/m= 9 Uragan-3M torsatron with an RF produced and heated plasma, these being interpreted as transition to an improved confinement mode due to ITB formation near the ? = 1/4 rational magnetic surface. In the work presented joint studies are carried out of changes in some edge and diverted plasma characteristics that accompany ITB formation. It is shown that ITB formation induces a hard Erbifurcation at the boundary presumably driven by the ion orbit loss. As a result, Erbecomes more negative, and an Ershear layer occurs, where the low-frequency microturbulence and the turbulence-induced anomalous transport are suppressed, i.e. an ETB is formed. At the pre-bifurcation phase of transition a reduction of fast ion loss takes place. The bifurcation results in an improvement of electron confinement, while the ion loss increases.

29. The divertor program in stellarators

- Abstract
Two significant problems that need to be solved for any future fusion device are heat removal and particle control. A very promising method to attack these problems in tokamaks and helical devices is the use of a divertor, providing a controlled interaction zone between plasma and wall. By carefully designing a divertor, conditions can be created in front of the divertor targets, which lead to a sufficient reduction of the power load on the targets by strong radiation redistribution. Any solution of course needs to allow for an energy confinement which is at least sufficient for the realization of a fusion reactor. Since energy confinement has been found to be strongly related to edge anomalous transport and edge plasma profiles, the ultimate aim is to find an integral solution which is optimum with respect to exhaust, heat load and energy confinement. Two different types of divertors are presently being investigated in helical devices: the `helical divertor' and the `island divertor'. So far divertor concepts have been investigated only in a few helical devices. Theoretical and experimental efforts have mainly concentrated on the suitability of divertor magnetic field structures, while detailed studies of the divertor plasma properties for the two types of divertor configurations have only recently begun. In the course of this exploration, a promising new high-density H-mode (HDH) plasma operational regime has been discovered on the Wendelstein stellarator W7-AS. It benefits from high-energy (up to twice the value of the International Stellarator Scaling ISS95) and low impurity confinement times, complemented by edge radiated power fractions of up to 90&percent; in detached regimes. This allowed quasi-steady-state operation for up to 50 energy confinement times and so far was only constrained by machine operability.
