The genus Clavibacter (family Microbacteriaceae) includes gram‐positive actinobacterial species infecting diverse agricultural crops such as alfalfa, maize, pepper, potato, tomato and wheat. Clavibacter tessellarius, causing bacterial mosaic of wheat, was reported for the first time in 1976 in Nebraska (United States). Since then, the pathogen was thought to be restricted to North America (Canada and the United States). While bacterial strains suspected to be C. tessellarius have occasionally been isolated from wheat samples outside North America, occurrence of the pathogen in the Old World has not yet been confirmed by the plant protection authorities. In spring 2020 (January to May) dozens of wheat fields with young plants showing leaf chlorosis and mild mosaic symptoms were surveyed and sampled in southern Iran. Among 192 surveyed wheat fields, gram‐positive, orange‐pigmented actinobacterial strains were isolated from samples of 53 fields. Altogether, 61 bacterial strains were identified as C. tessellarius based on the phenotypic features, PCR‐based molecular tests and pathogenicity assays. Multilocus sequence analysis of five housekeeping genes (atpD, dnaK, gyrB, ppk and rpoB) using 10 representative strains from diverse geographic areas in southern Iran confirmed the phylogenetic status of the strains within C. tessellarius. Our data indicate that the bacterial mosaic pathogen occurs in four southern Iranian provinces including Bushehr, Fars, Kerman and Khuzestan. Thus, occurrence of C. tessellarius outside North America is confirmed. Alternaria is an important toxigenic fungal genus endangering the quality of cereal grains. No data are available in the literature regarding the composition of Alternaria species in wheat from the main wheat‐cultivating regions of China. In this study, a total of 282 strains were isolated from wheat kernels collected in various provinces. Phylogenetic characterization was performed using two informative loci, ASA10 and ASA19, demonstrating that all strains belonged to A. alternata. A low molecular diversity was observed, which did not appear to be influenced by geographic origin. The secondary metabolite profile of the strains was evaluated in rice culture. Altertoxin I was synthesized at a high concentration by the majority of the strains, while the accumulation of altenuene was lower in both frequency and level than that of alternariol and its derivative. A. alternata did not cause readily observable symptoms on wheat spikes after spraying of the conidia at anthesis, but a higher quantity of altertoxin I and Alternaria DNA were detected in inoculated grains. Artificial inoculations of apple fruit showed that all examined strains were capable of causing typical rot symptoms and producing all four toxins to a certain degree. The widespread occurrence of A. alternata on wheat grains and its ability to synthesize various toxic metabolites may pose a serious hazard for both growers and consumers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research to identify appropriate biological agents for controlling pathogens might exploit experimental evolution to select for enhanced antagonism against pathogens. We developed an experimental regime facilitating this approach, featuring the bacterial broad‐spectrum predator Myxococcus xanthus and the fungal wheat pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici. We demonstrate that Z. tritici, a major cause of crop loss and fungicide use worldwide, both fuels growth of and is killed by M. xanthus on wheat straw, a probable source of seedling infection. M. xanthus was found capable of growth on moistened straw alone, unaided by Z. tritici, in a manner dependent on both M. xanthus initial density and on how long straw was moistened before M. xanthus inoculation. Such growth of non‐cellulolytic myxobacteria on plant detritus may have implications for understanding their roles in nutrient cycling. However, straw with Z. tritici was found to fuel greater M. xanthus growth than straw alone under many conditions. After shorter moistening periods, growth by low‐density M. xanthus populations was found to be fully dependent on Z. tritici. Such pathogen‐dependent M. xanthus populations could be sustained with population replacement over five 1‐week growth cycles, indicating the feasibility of conducting long‐term experimental evolution with this system. Furthermore, M. xanthus was found to kill majorities of Z. tritici populations on both buffered agar and straw. Our results suggest that myxobacteria may serve as effective biocontrol agents of Z. tritici and are amenable to long‐term experimental selection for enhanced killing of this pathogen, an approach broadly applicable to many potential biocontrol agents and target pathogens. Fungicides play an important role in wheat blast management in Brazil. To determine whether the reported patterns of fungicide resistance are present in Pyricularia oryzae populations from wheat and signal grass grown in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, we characterized the sensitivity of a contemporary collection (2018 and 2019) of 64 fungal isolates to seven fungicides belonging to DMI (tebuconazole and epoxiconazole), QoI (azoxystrobin and pyraclostrobin) and SDHI (bixafen, fluxapyroxad and benzovindiflupyr) groups. We further assessed if the differential sensitivity of selected isolates affected disease control using commercial doses of the fungicides applied protectively (prior to inoculation) on the heads of potted plants. Despite finding relatively low levels of in vitro sensitivity to some of the fungicides (e.g., azoxystrobin, fluxapyroxad and bixafen), control efficacies (percentage reductions in head blast severity) were significantly higher than the untreated plants and not affected by the sensitivity of the strain to all fungicides but azoxystrobin. The levels of head blast control for some of the fungicides (>70%) in the greenhouse were similar to or higher than previously reported in the field. The molecular data for a set of isolates representing different fungicide sensitivity levels were generally not predictive of the phenotype. The wheat‐infecting isolates were less sensitive than signal grass‐infecting isolates to all fungicides including azoxystrobin. Our study not only confirms previous reports of low sensitivity to some fungicides, but it also suggests options among site‐specific fungicides, most notably tebuconazole and benzovindiflupyr, that can still be used under an antiresistance strategy such as coformulation with multisite fungicides. This study follows on from a previous study showing that binary mixtures of wheat cultivars affect the evolution of Zymoseptoria tritici populations within a field epidemic from the beginning (t1) to the end (t2) of a growing season. Here, we focused on the impact of interseason sexual reproduction on this evolution. We studied mixtures of susceptible and resistant cultivars (carrying Stb16q, a recently broken‐down resistance gene) in proportions of 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75, and their pure stands. We determined the virulence status of 1440 ascospore‐derived strains collected from each cultivar residue by phenotyping on seedlings. Virulence frequencies in the ascospore‐derived population were lower in mixtures than in pure stands of the resistant cultivar, especially in the susceptible cultivar residues, as at t2, revealing that the impact of mixtures persisted until the next epidemic season (t3). Surprisingly, after sexual reproduction the avirulence frequencies on the resistant cultivar residues increased in mixtures where the proportion of the susceptible cultivar was higher. Our findings highlight two epidemiological processes: selection within the pathogen population between t1 and t2 driven by asexual cross‐contamination between cultivars (previous study) and sexual crosses between avirulent and virulent strains between t2 and t3 driven by changes in the probabilities of physical encounters (this study). Mixtures therefore appear to be a promising strategy for the deployment of qualitative resistances, not only to limit the intensity of Septoria tritici blotch epidemics, but also to reduce the erosion of resistances by managing evolution of the pathogen population at a pluriannual scale. Septoria tritici blotch (STB) is one of the main causes of wheat yield loss in the world. Apart from good agrotechnical practice, disease‐resistant cultivars are required to prevent yield losses. Breeding of such cultivars is time‐consuming and laborious, mainly due to the quantitative character of such resistance, but can be shortened using precise phenotyping. We show that fluorescence parameters, collected in a high‐throughput system, can be used for estimating wheat STB resistance. Using machine learning methods (deep learning network, random forest), we demonstrate that disease resistance based on the percentage of necrotic leaf area can be estimated by alterations in fluorescence parameters 8 days after inoculation, and before disease symptoms become visible. Moreover, we applied a random forest classifier to assess the significance of fluorescence parameters in an informative way (classification accuracy = 64.84%, p value [Accuracy >No information rate] <0.001). Based on this, we observed extensive alterations in parameters of sensitive cultivars, reflecting worse photosynthetic performance. The most highly altered parameters were fluorescence intensity measurements and descriptors of energy flux through photosystem II (PSII) reaction centres towards PSI such as F2, F3 and F4 fluorescence intensities at 0.1, 0.270 and 2 ms; initial to maximal fluorescence ratio (F0/Fm); the time derivative of relative variable fluorescence (dV/dT0); maximum quantum yield of PSII in the dark‐adapted state (Fv/Fm); maximum electron transport flux at PSII (ET0/RC); maximum trapped excitonic energy flux per excited PSII cross section (CS) at time T0 (TR0/CS0); and quantum efficiency of the reduction of end acceptors dR0 [dR0/(1 − dR0)]. Wheat farmers rely on fungicides to protect fields against several foliar and flowering diseases, including Fusarium head blight (FHB). A range of active ingredients is used in isolation or in dual premixes that include a dimethylation inhibitor (DMI) or a quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicide. Comprehensive information about fungicide resistance in F. graminearum is available for DMIs, while for QoIs the data are scarce. We characterized 225 strains obtained from two states in southern Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and Paraná (PR), in relation to their response to two QoIs. The median EC50 (effective concentration leading to 50% inhibition of conidial germination) value for azoxystrobin (n = 25 isolates) was 2.20 μg/ml in the PR population and 4.04 μg/ml in the RS population. For pyraclostrobin (n = 50), the median EC50 was 0.28 μg/ml in the PR population and 0.24 μg/ml in the RS population. Evidence of cross‐resistance could not be detected. Screening using a discriminatory dose (DD) for azoxystrobin in a larger number of isolates from PR (n = 75) and RS (n = 100) states allowed the detection of 50% and 28% sensitive strains, respectively. Using the DD for pyraclostrobin, 33% and 18.8% were classified as less sensitive in the PR and RS isolates, respectively. In RS, the frequency of less‐sensitive isolates increased over time (2007–2011). No point mutation at any of the target spots (F129L, G137R, G143A) was detected. Tan spot, caused by the fungus Pyrenophora tritici‐repentis (Ptr), is a disease that has become more prevalent and intense in wheat crops in Argentina in recent years. Failure to control the disease with strobilurin fungicides, which were once effective, has been observed in different zones where wheat is grown. However, whether or not true resistance is present in the pathogen population in the region is not scientifically confirmed. This study evaluated the sensitivity of numerous Ptr isolates to representative QoI fungicides used in Argentina through in vitro and in planta assays, as well as through molecular analysis. Eighty‐two monosporic isolates obtained in different locations in the north and south of Buenos Aires province in 2014, 2016, and 2018 were tested to determine sensitivity to selected QoI fungicides in conidial germination and mycelial inhibition assays, as well as in molecular analysis. Conidial germination was not inhibited at 1 µg/ml of azoxystrobin, trifloxystrobin, and pyraclostrobin. On the other hand, mycelial growth was inhibited by 59%, 56%, and 86% at 100 µg/ml of azoxystrobin, trifloxystrobin, and pyraclostrobin, respectively. The molecular analysis detected the G143A mutation in the cytb gene of all the 82 Ptr isolates, but the F129L and G137R substitutions were not present. This study documents the G143A mutation conferring QoI resistance in Ptr in South America. Non‐crop plants such as grasses and volunteer plants are an inseparable part of the flora of crop fields and can influence virus incidence in crop plants. The presence of grasses as virus reservoirs can lead to a higher probability of virus incidence in crop plants. However, the role of reservoirs as an inoculum source in agricultural fields has not been well studied for many viral diseases of crops. Grasses have been found to constitute potential reservoirs for cereal‐infecting viruses in different parts of the world. This study revealed that cereal‐infecting viruses such as wheat dwarf virus (WDV), barley yellow dwarf viruses (BYDVs), and cereal yellow dwarf virus‐RPV (CYDV‐RPV) can be found among ryegrass growing in or around winter wheat fields. Phylogenetic analysis showed that a WDV isolate from ryegrass was a typical WDV‐E isolate that infects wheat. Similarly, a ryegrass isolate of barley yellow dwarf virus‐PAV (BYDV‐PAV) grouped in a clade together with other BYDV‐PAV isolates. Inoculation experiments under greenhouse conditions confirmed that annual ryegrass of various genotypes can be infected with WDV to a very low titre. Moreover, leafhoppers were able to acquire WDV from infected ryegrass plants, despite the low titre, and transmit the virus to wheat, resulting in symptoms. Information from the grass reservoir may contribute to improving strategies for controlling plant virus outbreaks in the field. Knowledge of the likely levels of virus in potential reservoir plants can be used to inform decisions on insect vector control strategies and may help to prevent virus disease outbreaks in the future. Grass species were grown in plots, as pure stands or mixed with wheat, after a sequence of wheat crops in which take-all ( Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici) had developed. Annual brome grasses maintained take-all inoculum in the soil as well as wheat (grown as a continuous sequence), and much better than cultivated species with a perennial habit. Take-all developed more in wheat grown after Anisantha sterilis (barren brome) or Bromus secalinus (rye brome), with or without wheat, than in continuous grass-free wheat in the same year, where take-all decline was apparently occurring. It was equally or more severe, however, in wheat grown after Lolium perenne (rye-grass) or Festuca arundinacea (tall fescue), despite these species having left the least inoculum in the soil. It was most severe in plots where these two grasses had been grown as mixtures with wheat. It is postulated that the presence of these grasses inhibited the development of take-all-suppressive microbiota that had developed in the grass-free wheat crops. The effects of the grasses appeared to be temporary, as amounts of take-all in a second subsequent winter wheat test crop were similar after all treatments. These results have important implications for take-all risk in wheat and, perhaps, other cereal crops grown after grass weed-infested cereals or after set-aside or similar 1-year covers containing weeds or sown grasses, especially in combination with cereal volunteers. Over a period ot three crop seasons the spatial patterns of some common diseases of winter wheat were investigated at growth stages (GS) 31/33 and 59/61. A large-scale sampling procedure, using randomly positioned transects and based on the theory of autocorrelation analysis, is described. This novel technique enables valid tests ot significance to be made on the autocorrelation coefficients calculated. The most complete data obtained were for Septoria tritici blotch which was found to have a. near random pattern on scales between 31 cm and 31 m at the growth stages investigated. However, the severity of S. tritici blotch was found to be autocorrelated at scales below 1 m in some fields. With the exceptions of powdery mildew at GS 31/33 and yellow rust at GS 59/61, the other diseases also exhibited a near random pattern. Therefore, almost any convenient sampling pattern, with reasonable overall coverage, will be adequate to obtain samples for monitoring winter wheat at growth stages 31 and 59. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epidemics of disease caused by Septoria tritici were studied in detail in 11 crops of winter wheat cv. Longbow over 4 years. Serious damage to the uppermost two leaf layers was caused by splash-borne infection from lower in the crop early in the life of the leaves, followed by one or rarely two cycles of multiplication within a leaf layer. Infection conditions rarely limited damage, even in a dry year; the timing and, to a lesser extent, amount of initial inoculum movement to an upper leaf layer was of greater importance. Timing of initial infection was determined by when rain splash occurred in relation to emergence of a leaf layer. Occurrence of infections soon after a leaf layer started to emerge allowed more time for multiplication of disease within that layer. These infections tended to be more severe because the leaves were closer to inoculum sources within the crop. Slight differences in phenology between locations explain why initially random disease distributions sometimes become aggregated. Early-sown crops are at greater risk because they mature more slowly, allowing more disease multiplication and better transfer between leaf layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After inoculation of winter wheat cv. Longbow at a single time, lesions of M. graminicola were produced over a long interval starting 15–35 days after inoculation, dependent on temperature. There was no evidence that a single infection gave rise to more than one lesion. After the initial infection period at 100% relative humidity (r.h.), keeping leaves wet for c. 10 h per day did not shorten latent period on seedlings. Experiments in controlled-environment chambers demonstrated a minimum latent period at approximately 17° C. Variation in the latent period of individual lesions was also minimum at this temperature. The latent period varied among the cultivars tested, cv. Longbow having the shortest, cv. Avalon having almost the longest. An experiment started in spring 1979 tested the effects of different treatments to perennial ryegrass, established as pure stands or undersown in spring wheat, on the severity of septoria diseases on the grass and in a following crop of winter wheat, sown in autumn 1980. Other plots were fallowed in 1979 and 1980 before sowing to winter wheat, also in autumn 1980. Septoria tritici was most severe in winter wheat after fallow and least severe in wheat that had been direct-drilIed after ryegrass. These effects were attributed to differences in amounts of available nitrogen, and consequent differences in crop growth, rather than to any differences in primary inoculum. Symptoms attributed to S. nodorum on the ryegrass were more common where the grass had been established under spring wheat than where it had been sown as a pure stand. They also tended to be more common where ryegrass had been inoculated with spores of S. nodorum than where it had been sprayed with captafol. Similar effects on symptoms attributed to Septoria spp. (mostly S. tritici) on the wheat were apparent in July. The results support the conclusion that the greater severity of septoria diseases that often occurs on wheat after grass than after non-graminaceous breaks, is probably due in part to survival of the pathogens on grass and, in some circumstances, on debris remaining from a previous wheat crop. Winter wheat cultivars of varying height were intercrossed and the progeny were studied in field trials to determine whether the greater resistance to S. nodorum of the taller cultivars was fortuitous or the result of genetic association. Variation in height, in resistance and in time of ear emergence was continuous, providing no evidence of the existence of individual genes of major effect. In F2 and backcross generations, the inheritance of all three characters was principally additive. Among random F3 and F4 families there was a clear tendency for tall straw and resistance to segregate together, proving that the association between these characters was not fortuitous and providing evidence of linkage or pleiotropy in their genetic control. There was a similar though less consistent tendency for late ear emergence and resistance to segregate together. There was substantial residual variation in resistance, not associated with variation in height or time of ear emergence, but its heritability was difficult to prove by comparisons between F3 and F4 generations, perhaps partly because of genotype x environment interaction. It is proposed that resistance is under polygenic control and pleiotropy rather than linkage is suggested as the explanation of its genetic association with height and with time of ear emergence. The existence of genes affecting resistance independently of height and time of ear emergence is also inferred. Analyses of the results of 21 winter wheat and 32 spring barley trials showed that cultivars differed significantly in their yield response to a standard fungicide treatment. Responses were also strongly influenced by differences between sites and between years. Regression analyses showed that responses were significantly related to reductions in foliar disease, particularly that of mildew, although the proportion of variance accounted for was small. Measurements made on seven winter wheat trials indicated that the percentage of leaf area remaining green after anthesis was increased by the fungicide treatment to a greater extent than could be attributed to reduction in foliar disease alone. Between 500 and 1000 winter wheat plants were taken at random immediately before harvest from crops with naturally or artificially created attacks of eyespot (Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides (Fron) Deighton) at eight sites in eastern England from 1975 to 1979, The individual shoots of each plant were placed in one of four categories: healthy, or slightly, moderately or severely infected with eyespot. Healthy shoots were sub-divided into those from plants with all shoots healthy and those from plants with at least one infected shoot. Ears were threshed individually and average dry weight of grain per ear, grain number per ear and 1000-grain dry weight were computed for each infection category and both healthy shoot categories. Slight eyespot had no effect on yield. Moderate eyespot reduced yield per ear, grain number per ear and 1000-grain weight by 10, 8 and 5 per cent respectively; severe eyespot caused corresponding losses of 36,29 and 15 percent. Healthy shoots showed no apparent compensation for yield loss in eyespot-infected shoots on the same plant. The equation y = 0.1χ1 + 0.36χ2, where y = percentage yield loss, χ1 = percentage of moderately infected shoots and χ2 = percentage of severely infected shoots, was applied to the results of ADAS winter wheat disease surveys from 1975 to 1980. National yield losses due to eyespot in these years were estimated to be 0.9, 0.3,1.1,1.2, 0.7 and 0.3 per cent respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Foliar sprays of fungicides were evaluated in a field where winter wheat cv. Joss Cambier was subject to a severe natural infection of yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis Westend.). Almost complete freedom from the disease was achieved on the leaves from repeated applications of BAS 3170F. This material prevented the development of appreciable disease for up to four weeks after spraying. Other chemicals gave varying degrees of protection but most lacked persistence. Control of ear infection was less satisfactory. The untreated crop, which was heavily attacked by yellow rust, showed a yield reduction of 34 per cent compared with the crop receiving greatest protection. The relationship between yield and yellow rust at growth stage 11.1 was statistically significant; the loss of yield recorded was 0.022 t/ha for each one per cent increase in the level of yellow rust on the flag leaf. A greater prevalence of European wheat striate mosaic was reported in English winter wheat crops in 1970 than in any previous year and loss of yield in one crop was probably as much as 10 per cent. At Rothamsted, infected plants were first found at the beginning of May and symptoms appeared in others until the middle of June. Most infections probably occurred before spring cereals emerged but a few plants became infected in spring-sown crops. Most infected plants produced no grain. The mild autumn of 1969 and a previous crop of spring wheat may have been partly responsible for the unusually prevalent infection at Rothamsted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes the control of wheat bulb fly in winter wheat through seed dressing and granule treatments in Suffolk, Holland during 1963-1964. On November 8, 1963, a randomized block was drilled on a clay-loam. A table is presented in this article which shows treatment details and the summary of the results. It notes that the Bayer 37289 seed dressing delayed germination but the crop recovered and good control of wheat bulb fly was obtained.

This article focuses on the control of wheat bulb fly in winter wheat during trials in Suffolk, Holland and Isle of Ely in 1963-1964. On March 27, 1963, a randomized block trial was laid down in Suffolk in a field where 97 percent of the plants were attacked and there were 1.7 shoots per plant. By this time 50 percent of the larvae were in the second instar. Treatments were applied as soon as the plots had been demarcated and larval assessments were made eight days later. The other trials were done in early March 1964. In Holland, 50 percent of the plants were attacked at the time treatments were applied, and in the Isle of Ely 72 percent were attacked. Plant samples were examined four weeks after treatment, and no yield assessments were made because all plots recovered from the attack.

This article describes the trials conducted in Essex, England and the Isle of Ely during 1963-1964. The trial in Essex was laid down on a clay loam while the other on a peaty loam in the Isle of Ely. All seed dressings were used at 2 ounce per bushel of seed. A liquid mercury dressing was applied to the seed used on the dimethoate spray and the control plots. On the clay loam site Bayer 37289 was highly phytotoxic, more so at one end of the trial where the soil contained a sand fraction. Bayer 38156 looked promising early in the season but the plants succumbed during the secondary attack. On the peaty loam site Bayer 37289 delayed germination but the plants recovered by mid-March. This treatment again gave reasonable control, as did Bayer 38156.

This article describes seed dressings in Yorkshire. On July 1963, a trial was laid down at High Melton, Yorkshire in England, on medium loam following a bulb crop. Cappelle Desprez wheat was drilled in a randomized block layout. Seed dressings were used at 2 ounce per bushel except for the liquid aldrin which was applied at 3 ounce per bushel of seed. The Bayer 37289 seed dressing was phytotoxic, germination was poor, and there were insufficient plants in April 1963 to obtain an estimate of wheat bulb fly damage. The Bayer 38156 seed dressing was not phytotoxic but gave poor control of wheat bulb fly and a low yield.
