Fungicides play an important role in wheat blast management in Brazil. To determine whether the reported patterns of fungicide resistance are present in Pyricularia oryzae populations from wheat and signal grass grown in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, we characterized the sensitivity of a contemporary collection (2018 and 2019) of 64 fungal isolates to seven fungicides belonging to DMI (tebuconazole and epoxiconazole), QoI (azoxystrobin and pyraclostrobin) and SDHI (bixafen, fluxapyroxad and benzovindiflupyr) groups. We further assessed if the differential sensitivity of selected isolates affected disease control using commercial doses of the fungicides applied protectively (prior to inoculation) on the heads of potted plants. Despite finding relatively low levels of in vitro sensitivity to some of the fungicides (e.g., azoxystrobin, fluxapyroxad and bixafen), control efficacies (percentage reductions in head blast severity) were significantly higher than the untreated plants and not affected by the sensitivity of the strain to all fungicides but azoxystrobin. The levels of head blast control for some of the fungicides (>70%) in the greenhouse were similar to or higher than previously reported in the field. The molecular data for a set of isolates representing different fungicide sensitivity levels were generally not predictive of the phenotype. The wheat‐infecting isolates were less sensitive than signal grass‐infecting isolates to all fungicides including azoxystrobin. Our study not only confirms previous reports of low sensitivity to some fungicides, but it also suggests options among site‐specific fungicides, most notably tebuconazole and benzovindiflupyr, that can still be used under an antiresistance strategy such as coformulation with multisite fungicides. Wheat blast is one of the most important and devastating fungal diseases of wheat in South America, South‐east Asia, and now in southern Africa. The disease can reduce grain yield by up to 70% and is best controlled using integrated disease management strategies. The difficulty in disease management is compounded by the lack of durable host resistance and the ineffectiveness of fungicide sprays. New succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicides were recently introduced for the management of wheat diseases. Brazilian field populations of the wheat blast pathogen Pyricularia oryzae Triticum lineage (PoTl) sampled from different geographical regions in 2012 and 2018 were shown to be resistant to both QoI (strobilurin) and DMI (azole) fungicides. The main objective of the current study was to determine the SDHI baseline sensitivity in these populations. Moderate levels of SDHI resistance were detected in five out of the six field populations sampled in 2012 and in most of the strains isolated in 2018. No association was found between target site mutations in the sdhB, sdhC, and sdhD genes and the levels of SDHI resistance, indicating that a pre‐existing resistance mechanism not associated with target site mutations is probably present in Brazilian wheat blast populations. The global COVID pandemic has impacted the world in ways and at a scale that few could have predicted, with many industries severely disrupted. Despite this, crops were sown and harvested, food was produced and agriculture continued to function, albeit it with many logistical challenges. Plant health lies at the heart of preventing crop losses through a combination of varietal resistance and agronomic practices. In the case of foliar plant diseases in wheat, varietal resistance plays a key role, but the use of synthetic fungicides is essential to minimize crop losses. European arable production faces a dilemma: how to contribute and maintain global food supplies but at the same time decrease emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), reduce inputs potentially harmful to biodiversity, society and the environment while ensuring no more land is brought into production. Throughout history, major disruptions in society have led to big steps in agricultural innovation. Presently, the major disruptive forces in Europe are not just a result of the COVID pandemic but the increasingly urgent need to address climate change. Within the European Green Deal, the Farm‐to‐Fork strategy is in place to help achieve climate neutrality by 2050, aiming for a reduction of GHG emissions of 55% by 2030. To achieve this, there will need to be a major adjustment to how food is produced, a realignment in plant health strategies and accelerated innovation across the agricultural sector. This paper aims to evaluate how synthetic fungicides presently contribute to plant health (mainly wheat) and food production as well as the management of GHG emissions. Tan spot, caused by the fungus Pyrenophora tritici‐repentis (Ptr), is a disease that has become more prevalent and intense in wheat crops in Argentina in recent years. Failure to control the disease with strobilurin fungicides, which were once effective, has been observed in different zones where wheat is grown. However, whether or not true resistance is present in the pathogen population in the region is not scientifically confirmed. This study evaluated the sensitivity of numerous Ptr isolates to representative QoI fungicides used in Argentina through in vitro and in planta assays, as well as through molecular analysis. Eighty‐two monosporic isolates obtained in different locations in the north and south of Buenos Aires province in 2014, 2016, and 2018 were tested to determine sensitivity to selected QoI fungicides in conidial germination and mycelial inhibition assays, as well as in molecular analysis. Conidial germination was not inhibited at 1 µg/ml of azoxystrobin, trifloxystrobin, and pyraclostrobin. On the other hand, mycelial growth was inhibited by 59%, 56%, and 86% at 100 µg/ml of azoxystrobin, trifloxystrobin, and pyraclostrobin, respectively. The molecular analysis detected the G143A mutation in the cytb gene of all the 82 Ptr isolates, but the F129L and G137R substitutions were not present. This study documents the G143A mutation conferring QoI resistance in Ptr in South America. Demethylation inhibitor (DMI) and succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicides are currently relied upon for the control of septoria tritici blotch (STB) in European wheat fields. However, multiple mutations have occurred over time in the genes encoding the targeted proteins that have led to a practical loss of fungicide efficacies. Among the different amino acid substitutions in Zymoseptoria tritici associated with resistance to these fungicides, S524T in CYP51 (DMI target) and H152R in SdhC (SDHI target) are regarded as conferring the highest resistance factors to DMI and SDHI, respectively. To facilitate further studies on the monitoring and selection of these substitutions in Z. tritici populations, a multiplex allele‐specific quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay allowing for estimation of both allele frequencies in bulk DNA matrices was developed. The assay was then used on complex DNA samples originating from a spore trap network set up in Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, and Ireland in 2017 and 2018, as well as on leaf samples with symptoms. The S524T allele was present in all field samples and its proportion was significantly higher in Ireland than in Belgium, whereas the proportion of H152R was only sporadically present in both countries. The frequency of S524T varied greatly in the airborne inoculum of all four countries; however, the H152R allele was never detected in the airborne inoculum. The method developed in this study can be readily adopted by other laboratories and used for multiple applications including resistance monitoring in field populations of Z. tritici. Two field experiments (Exp. 1 and Exp. 2) were carried out to assess the physiological performance and grain yield of wheat cultivars BR-18 (moderately resistant) and Guamirim (susceptible) inoculated with Pyricularia oryzae in plots treated or untreated with Ópera (fungicide 13.3% epoxiconazole + 5% pyraclostrobin). Results from regression analyses indicated that spike and leaf blast severity at 10-14 days after inoculation (dai) were associated with greater yield losses (highest negative slope) than severity at 18-22 dai. Relative to untreated Guamirim, there were 0.3% and 16% increases in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively, for untreated BR-18 (resistance alone). For fungicide treatment alone, the mean yield of Guamirim increased by 20% and 61% in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively, relative to the untreated fungicide control, whereas for the fungicide treated BR-18, the mean yield increased by 26% and 83% in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively. Fungicide application and cultivar resistance resulted in higher measures of leaf health and photosynthetic performance in both spikes and leaves than in the untreated susceptible reference treatment. Two key decisions that need to be taken about a fungicide treatment programme are (i) the number of applications that should be used per crop growing season, and (ii) the dosage that should be used in each application. There are two opposing considerations, with control efficacy improved by a higher number of applications and higher dose, and resistance management improved by a lower number of applications and lower dose. Resistance management aims to prolong the effective life of the fungicide, defined as the time between its introduction onto the market for use on the target pathogen, and the moment when effective control is lost due to a build-up of fungicide resistance. Thus, the question is whether there are optimal combinations of dose rate and number of applications that both provide effective control and lead to a longer effective life. In this paper, it is shown how a range of spray programmes can be compared and optimal programmes selected. This is explored with Zymoseptoria tritici on wheat and a quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicide. For this pathogen-fungicide combination, a single treatment provided effective control under the simulated disease pressure, but only if the application timing was optimal and the dose was close to the maximum permitted. Programmes with three applications were generally not optimal as they exerted too much selection for resistance. Two-application fungicide programmes balanced effective control with reasonable flexibility of dose and application timing, and low resistance selection, leading to long effective lives of the fungicide. Deoxynivalenol ( DON) is one of the most prevalent toxins in Fusarium-infected wheat samples. Accurate forecasting systems that predict the presence of DON are useful to underpin decision making on the application of fungicides, to identify fields under risk, and to help minimize the risk of food and feed contamination with DON. To this end, existing forecasting systems often adopt statistical regression models, in which attempts are made to predict DON values as a continuous variable. In contrast, this paper advocates the use of ordinal regression models for the prediction of DON values, by defining thresholds for converting continuous DON values into a fixed number of well-chosen risk classes. Objective criteria for selecting these thresholds in a meaningful way are proposed. The resulting approach was evaluated on a sizeable field experiment in Belgium, for which measurements of DON values and various types of predictor variables were collected at 18 locations during 2002-2011. The results demonstrate that modelling and evaluating DON values on an ordinal scale leads to a more accurate and more easily interpreted predictive performance. A method for calculating the effect of disease control on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with wheat production, reported previously, was developed further to account for effects of disease control on the amount of fertilizer nitrogen (N) which should be applied and on changes in land use. Data from nine randomized and replicated field experiments from the UK and Denmark showed that the economic optimum N input to winter wheat was greater if diseases were controlled by fungicides, than for untreated wheat. The GHGs associated with this additional N largely negated the benefit to emissions per tonne of grain resulting from disease control. However, the mean grain yield obtained without fungicide treatment was 6·71 t ha−1, compared to 8·88 t ha−1 with fungicide treatment, if N input was optimal for each situation. In the absence of disease control by fungicides, and assuming that the optimum N rate was used, an additional 481 kha of wheat would be required to maintain UK wheat production at the current level. If the additional land area came from converting temperate grassland to arable production, the GHG emissions caused by ploughing grassland would cause emissions to rise from 503 to 713 kg CO2e per tonne of grain produced. This would result in an additional 3·15 Mt CO2e per year to produce the typical UK annual production of 15 Mt. The effects of varying doses of fungicides, alone or in mixtures, on selection for triazole resistance were examined under field conditions. Two experiments were conducted using the triazole fungicide fluquinconazole with the strobilurin fungicide azoxystrobin as a mixture partner. Inoculated wheat plots with a known ratio of more sensitive to less sensitive isolates of the leaf blotch fungus Mycosphaerella graminicola were sprayed with fungicide and sampled once symptoms had appeared. Selection for fluquinconazole resistance increased in proportion to the dose, up to one-half of the full dose (the maximum tested) in both experiments. At the higher doses of fluquinconazole, the addition of azoxystrobin was associated with a decrease in selection (nonsignificant in the first experiment) for triazole resistance. Control by low doses of fluquinconazole was increased by mixture with azoxystrobin, but at higher doses mixture with azoxystrobin sometimes decreased control, so that reduced selection was obtained at the cost of some reduction in control. The effects on resistance are not necessarily general consequences of mixing fungicides, and suggest that the properties of any specific mixture may need to be demonstrated experimentally. From a total of 238 European cultivars and breeding lines screened for isolate-specific resistance to septoria tritici blotch (STB) with eight Mycosphaerella graminicola isolates from five different countries, 142 lines were resistant to Ethiopian isolate IPO88004, and 43 lines were specifically resistant to IPO323, with little or no leaf area bearing pycnidia of M. graminicola. These lines probably all have the resistance gene Stb6. Specific resistances to isolates CA30JI, IPO001, IPO89011, IPO92006 and ISR398 were less common. Seventy-three per cent of the lines were specifically resistant to at least one isolate and 36 lines were resistant to more than one isolate. The line with the greatest number of specific resistances was the spring cultivar Raffles, with five. The most resistant line in which no specific resistance was identified was the Italian landrace Rieti, an ancestor of many modern European wheat cultivars. There was also a wide range of partial resistance among the lines tested, expressed in detached seedling leaves. Information about the resistance of wheat lines to M. graminicola isolates will assist breeders to choose parents of crosses from which progeny with superior resistance to STB may be selected. For wheat, the optimum time to apply fungicide to control disease on a given leaf layer is usually at, or shortly after, full leaf emergence. Data from field experiments on barley were used to investigate whether the same relationship was applicable to control of leaf blotch on barley. Replicated plots of winter barley were sown in the autumns of 1991, 1992 and 1993 at sites in southwest England with high risk of Rhynchosporium secalis infection. Single fungicide treatments at four doses (0·25, 0·5, 0·75 or 1·0 times the label rate) were applied at one of eight different spray times, starting in mid-March in each year, with intervals of 10–11 days between spray timings. Disease was assessed every 10–11 days and area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) values were used to construct fungicide dose by spray time response surfaces for each of the upper four leaves, for each year. Spray timings shortly before leaf emergence were found to minimize the AUDPC for each year and leaf layer, and also the effective dose (the dose required to achieve a specified level of control), similar to wheat. Fungicide treatments on barley were effective for a longer period before leaf emergence than afterwards, probably because treatments before emergence of the target leaf reduced inoculum production on leaves below. Field isolates ( n = 144) of the wheat take-all fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici ( Ggt) were tested for sensitivity to silthiofam, a take-all-specific fungicide used as a seed treatment, and identified as A- or B-type by PCR–RFLP analysis of nuclear rDNA. A possible association was identified between polymorphisms in ITS2 of the nuclear rDNA and sensitivity to silthiofam. A Ggt-specific PCR assay was developed which simultaneously identified isolates of Ggt as A- or B-type, based on the polymorphisms in the nuclear rDNA. A highly significant correlation between Ggt type using the PCR assay and sensitivity to silthiofam was demonstrated in a collection of 358 isolates from three field experiments designed to test the effects of seed-treatment fungicides on take-all and Ggt populations in winter wheat. In one experiment the percentages of silthiofam-sensitive and B-type isolates were significantly less in populations from plots sown with silthiofam-treated seed in two consecutive years than in populations from plots sown with nontreated seed. However, silthiofam still provided a significant amount of control of take-all. The natural occurrence of fungicide-insensitive isolates, up to about 30% in soils in which the fungicide had never been used, is unusual. The new PCR assay provides a useful tool for studying the population structure of Ggt, and may provide a novel method for assessing the incidence of insensitivity to silthiofam (the target site for which has not yet been identified) in field populations of Ggt. Data from field experiments were used to test whether disease observations on lower leaves of wheat were good predictors of future epidemic development in the upper canopy. Fungicide treatments to replicated plots in 1994 and 1995 caused variation in levels of initial inoculum of urediniospores of yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis ). Observations of symptom severity were made on individual leaf layers throughout the season. Sporulating lesions on lower leaves were considered to be a measure of inoculum source strength for transfer to upper culm leaves. Low source strengths were associated with delays in epidemic development on the upper leaves, as quantified by a location parameter, t m , the time at which severity reached half of the asymptote value in logistic fits to disease progress data on the upper leaves. However, there was much unexplained variation, probably due to extraneous variation in upward transfer efficiency of inoculum and rates of epidemic development. Vanderplank's sanitation ratio theory was used to account for variation in inoculum transfer and epidemic rate. The analysis revealed that if the aim is to predict disease on a newly emerged culm leaf, during the period when it can be treated effectively with fungicide, then observations of disease two leaves further down the culm were of the greatest predictive value (R 2 = 86%). These observations, however, need to be integrated with information about factors affecting upward inoculum transfer and rates of epidemic development if acceptable predictive precision is to be achieved. Communities of fungi on roots increased in diversity between second and third cereals, and were more diverse on winter wheat than on winter barley in a field experiment conducted over 3 years. Seed treatment with formulations containing fluquinconazole or fluquinconazole plus prochloraz had little effect on these communities, which include potentially beneficial, antagonistic fungi. Seed treatment decreased take-all and increased yield of wheat, especially in the second wheat in which take-all was building up, and in the third wheat when take-all was at its peak. It was less effective in the fourth wheat when take-all appeared to be in decline in plots that had no seed treatment throughout the experiment, and in barley, in which take-all was usually less severe. Take-all increased in untreated fourth wheat crops grown after third wheat crops that had been treated, suggesting that treatment had delayed take-all build-up and eventual progress into take-all decline. Quantitative PCR analysis and visual disease assessment (VDA) were used to study Fusarium culmorum and F. poae ear blight of wheat and its fungicidal control in three glasshouse trials (1994–5 and 1996–7). VDA indicated high levels of both diseases in the trials, while PCR analysis showed that the amounts of F. poae detected in infected plants were low relative to the amounts detected for F. culmorum. PCR and VDA analysis both indicated that the demethylase-inhibiting (DMI) fungicides prochloraz and tebuconazole significantly decreased F. culmorum and F. poae ear blight. The PCR results, however, revealed levels of disease control by fungicide treatments that were consistently higher than those suggested by VDA. Overall, both fungicides appeared equally effective in controlling the two pathogens. PCR and VDA analysis indicated that the anilino-pyrimidine fungicide pyrimethanil had no significant effect on F. culmorum ear blight. Correlations between VDA at cereal growth stage 80 and PCR analysis were similar for F. culmorum and F. poae. Yield analysis, as measured by 1000 grain weight, indicated that DNA content more accurately predicted yield loss than did VDA scores. Inoculation with F. culmorum significantly reduced yield and significant relationships were observed between F. culmorum disease (as assessed visually or by PCR) and yield, with yield decreasing as disease increased. In contrast, inoculation with F. poae had no significant effect on yield and no significant relationships were observed between F. poae disease and yield. These results have important implications for field studies of Fusarium ear blight of wheat because they highlight the importance of identification of the causal organisms to the species level. Tapesia yallundae was observed in early July on wheat straws, which had been inoculated with isolates of Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides (W-type) 9 months previously and placed in plots of winter wheat. to act as inoculum in a resistance screen. A perfect state was not observed on straws inoculated with R-type isolates in the same experiment. One hundred and thirty-four single-ascospore isolates were obtained and observations on morphology in culture, pathogenicity to wheat and rye seedlings, resistance to benomyl and the pattern of restriction fragment length polymorphisms demonstrated that all isolates were W-type, although some grey, at half the expected rate on agar, and at least two isolates were involved in the production of apothecia. Apothecia were produced in vitro on straws inoculated with single isolates of P. herpotrichoides only when they were incubated in contact with other straws similarly inoculaled with certain other isolates. No apothecia were produced on straws with only isolate present, suggesting the need for at least two strains, possibly representing different mating types, for apothecium formation. Apothecia of T. yallundae were produced in vitro on straw pieces which had been inoculated individually with W-type isolates, 14–16 weeks after straws of different isolates were mixed. Evidence for genetic recombination between isolates was obtained when single-ascopore colonies were analysed for resistance to benomyl in culture and for restriction-length polymorphisms (RFLPs). Control of take-all (Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici) of wheat, with fungicides applied at seeding, was investigated at three naturally infested field sites. Fungicides were applied with seed either as granules or as pellets at rates ranging from 1·5 to 14·0 kg a.i./ha. Treatment with benzimidazole and triazole fungicides resulted in lower disease severity on seminal roots, up to 100% fewer deadheads and more than 200% greater yields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of two fungicides, benomyl and triadimefon, applied at seeding, on the incidence and severity of take-all (Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici) of wheat were investigated in the glasshouse and in the field. In glasshouse studies with an artificially inoculated and naturally infested sandy loam, both fungicides caused significantly less disease, whereas in a field study with a clay soil and artificial inoculum, triadimefon caused significantly less discase. Analyses of the results of 21 winter wheat and 32 spring barley trials showed that cultivars differed significantly in their yield response to a standard fungicide treatment. Responses were also strongly influenced by differences between sites and between years. Regression analyses showed that responses were significantly related to reductions in foliar disease, particularly that of mildew, although the proportion of variance accounted for was small. Measurements made on seven winter wheat trials indicated that the percentage of leaf area remaining green after anthesis was increased by the fungicide treatment to a greater extent than could be attributed to reduction in foliar disease alone. Foliar sprays of fungicides were evaluated in a field where winter wheat cv. Joss Cambier was subject to a severe natural infection of yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis Westend.). Almost complete freedom from the disease was achieved on the leaves from repeated applications of BAS 3170F. This material prevented the development of appreciable disease for up to four weeks after spraying. Other chemicals gave varying degrees of protection but most lacked persistence. Control of ear infection was less satisfactory. The untreated crop, which was heavily attacked by yellow rust, showed a yield reduction of 34 per cent compared with the crop receiving greatest protection. The relationship between yield and yellow rust at growth stage 11.1 was statistically significant; the loss of yield recorded was 0.022 t/ha for each one per cent increase in the level of yellow rust on the flag leaf.
