Aims: Black pine coastal forests play an important role as windbreak and as a natural barrier to sand and salt spray inland in Japan. The recent invasion of N2-fixing black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) trees in these forests is expected to have a nutritional contribution on black pine trees growth. Thus, the effect of this new source of N on black pine trees N assimilation needs to be assessed. Methods: In order to evaluate this contribution, tree-ring isotopic composition (δ15N) and nitrogen content (%N) of black pine (Pinus thunbergii) trees in a pure stand (BPP) and a mixed stand (BPM) with black locust (BL) trees were measured for the period 2000–2019 for BPP and BL and 1990–2019 for BPM. The same measurements were conducted in plant tissues and in soil samples. Results: The tree ring δ15N values showed that for the last 30 years, BPM trees gradually switched from BPP to BL-derived soil N starting in the 1990s, becoming the dominant N source from 2000 as no significant difference was found between BPM and BL tree ring δ15N values from 2000 to 2019. No difference in root and sapwood BPM and BL δ15N values were found, but BPM foliage (−2.1‰) was different to BPP (−4.4‰) and BL (−0.3‰), which is related to the different N assimilation pathways between BP and BL. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, the assimilation of BL-derived N inferred from the BPM tissues δ15N values is the result of an increase in soil bioavailable N with a higher δ15N value. In the absence of fire in black spruce-feathermoss stands, a thick forest floor layer dominated by bryophytes and sphagnum accumulates. This layer is associated with wet, cool and nutrient-poor soil conditions conducive to the paludification process and pushing the ecosystem towards an unproductive open black spruce forest. The presence of Populus tremuloides in theses stands may halt this process because this species has a high nutrient cycling rate and a litter that represses moss cover. The main hypothesis of this study is that, despite similar abiotic conditions (slope and drainage), the presence of Populus tremuloides in a stand dominated by Picea mariana affects surface soil nutrient availability, total N, pH as well as the decomposition process. The abundance of Populus tremuloides trees was associated with higher exchangeable cations, cationic exchangeable capacity and pH of the forest floor layer on all sites. A decrease in organic matter thickness with increasing aspen presence was also found on all sites, suggesting that this species affects the decomposition process by the quality of its litter as well as by a general improvement of soil physical and chemical properties. The decomposition rate of a standard substrate as well as in vitro potential net nitrogen mineralization were positively related to Populus tremuloides on only one of the three sites, and non-significant on the other sites. Strong immobilization of added nitrogen during incubation was observed on all sites and was not related to aspen, which suggested that in these stands, the soil microbial community is uniformly and strongly nitrogen limited. The zone of influence of Populus tremuloides was evaluated in areas around the soil sampling plot ranging from 3 to 7 m. The results revealed that this zone varies with soil properties. The results suggest that the presence of Populus tremuloides accelerate nutrient cycling, which could affect stand productivity to some extent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the belowground development and strategy of late-successional European beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.) in ageing natural Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) woodlands in a French volcanic mid-elevation area. For this purpose root biomass, root profile and fine-root architecture of competitor trees were examined in 53 mixed pine–beech and 42 birch–beech woodlands along a stand maturation gradient, using the root auger technique (0–75-cm). The total beech fine-root biomass highly correlated with aerial dimensions such as stem height and girth, whereas it moderately correlated with its age, thus indicating the effects of competition. Basic stand biometric data such as stand density and basal area had no significant effect on beech root biomass. Conversely, competition indices taking into account the vertical dimensions of competitor trees were efficient, probably due to redundancy with beech height. At similar age and height, beeches under birch had a greater belowground development than beeches under pine. Each species exhibited specific rooting pattern and plasticity of fine-root architecture along the gradients of stand maturation and competition. Beech had a heart-shaped rooting habit in both mixings, which strongly increased along stand maturation. Its fine-root system adopted a foraging strategy to respond to increasing stand competition. The Scots pine fine-root system was plate-like and showed a low morphological plasticity, thus presumably a conservative strategy. Silver birch exhibited a high biomass and a foraging capacity in the topsoil but a loose root system in the subsoil. The coexistence of pine and beech roots in the upper soil presumably leads to a high belowground competition. Beech root system becomes predominant throughout the soil profile and it adopts an efficient foraging strategy, but at the expense of its belowground development. Conversely, the niche partitioning strategy between beech and birch may explain why beech develops strongly belowground in spite of the fact that birch has a dense rooting and a competitive fine-root architecture.
