Introduction: Studies analyzing postures and mobility of the thoracic spine in the context of cervicogenic headache are missing. Insight in these parameters is needed since the cervical and thoracic spine are biomechanically related. Objective: To compare self-perceived optimal and habitual postures, active-assisted maximal range of motion, and repositioning error of the upper-thoracic and lower-thoracic spine between a cervicogenic headache-group and matched healthy control-group before and after a 30 min-laptop-task. Methods: A non-randomized longitudinal design was used to compare thoracic postures and mobility between 18 participants with cervicogenic headache (29–51 years) and 18 matched healthy controls (26–52 years). Outcomes were: self-perceived optimal and habitual postures, active-assisted maximal range of motion, and repositioning error of the upper-thoracic and lower-thoracic spine evaluated in sitting with a 3D-Vicon motion analysis system. Results: Habitual upper-thoracic postures in the cervicogenic headache-group were significantly (p =.04) less located toward the maximal range of motion for flexion compared to the control-group, self-perceived optimal upper-thoracic posture was significantly (p =.004) more extended in the cervicogenic headache-group compared to the control-group, and self-perceived optimal lower-thoracic posture could not be reestablished in the cervicogenic headache-group after the laptop-task (p =.009). Conclusion: Thoracic postures differ between a cervicogenic headache-group and control-group. These differences were detected by expressing the habitual thoracic posture relative to its maximal range of motion, and by analyzing the possibility of repositioning the thoracic spine after a headache provoking activity. To examine whether extended compared to standard level of physiotherapy is feasible and has beneficial effects on physical function in ICU survivors. This prospective pilot study with a before and after design included patients discharged from ICU to a surgical ward. The comparison group were recruited between January and April 2019 and received standard level of physiotherapy. The intervention group were recruited between May and December 2019 and received extended physiotherapy, corresponding to 50% additional physiotherapist, working 4 hours per weekday. The intervention participants received an individual rehabilitation plan developed in collaboration with a ward-based physiotherapist, and an extended number of sessions provided by the extra resource included practicing individualized exercises, for example walking and stair climbing. Physical function was measured with the Chelsea Critical Care Physical Assessment tool (CPAx) at ICU discharge, during hospital stay and discharge. Group differences were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U-test and Chi2 test. Out of 46 eligible patients, 39 (85%) fulfilled the study (comparison n = 12, intervention n = 27) and were included in the final analyses. No adverse events occurred, and the attendance rate was high (98.5%). There were no statistically significant differences between the groups regarding physical function, hospital stay, and readmissions, but there were tendencies to better outcomes in all these parameters in favor of the intervention group. Additionally, patients in the intervention group had statistically significantly higher scores in the CPAx items "transferring from bed to chair" (median 5 vs 4, p =.039) and "stepping" (median 5 vs 4, p =.005) at hospital discharge. This pilot study indicates that extended physiotherapy after ICU discharge is feasible and does not entail patient safety risks. Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) became a significant challenge for the work and personal experience of physiotherapists (PTs) To investigate how the work activities of PTs in a region in Italy have changed, describe the reasons for change, perceived competence, and effectiveness of professional education, and explore their personal experience We adopted a monocentric convergent mixed-methods light–questionnaire variant study. The questionnaire contains both closed-ended and open-ended questions. Quantitative and qualitative data were combined to interpret the results Among 78 respondents (response rate 24.4%), 87.2% worked during the pandemic, 52.9% treated patients with COVID-19, and 45.6% changed their working activities. Professional competence was perceived as low in intensive and sub-intensive care settings. The major critical aspect of professional education was respiratory rehabilitation. Life-learning education was judged as effective, even if mainly focused on safety. Nine themes emerged from the analysis of the PTs' experiences: 1) Physiotherapy during COVID-19; 2) Fear and negative feelings; 3) Positive aspects; 4) Organization and management; 5) Prevention measures; 6) Patients; 7) Change; 8) Information; and 9) Professional education PTs who have direct experience with patients with COVID-19 showed great resilience. The risk of injury in archery is supposedly low. However, relations between pain, shooting phases and types of bow have not been studied. Understanding the biomechanical mechanisms of archery-related injuries. Online survey for archers from all types of bow. Variables were analyzed using contingency tables and chi-squared tests. 396 surveys were completed. 36.9% of the archers had practiced archery for more than 10 years, 23.3% between 5 and 10 years. Olympic recurve bow was the most commonly used (38.2%), followed by traditional (23.3%) and compound (22.0%). 57.3% of the archers suffered some kind of injury during archery practice. Drawing shoulder (28.2%) and neck/back injuries (19.9%) were the most prevalent, preventing 50.3% of those who suffered them from continuing archery practice. There was a moderate association between drawing arm injuries and symptomatology in the drawing phase, especially in the shoulder region (0.55), elbow (0.20), and hand (0.13), and to a lesser extent in the neck/back (0.28). Our results show that injury chronicity is frequent on archery. Correlations between types of bow, phases of the shoot and areas of pain could be a starting point for future studies on the repercussions of different types of injuries in archery practice. Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) are at high risk for pulmonary and vascular complications. Smoking is an important risk factor for respiratory symptoms and vascular complications of many diseases in the general population. However, studies on the role of smoking in SSc are insufficient. This study aimed to compare pulmonary function, respiratory symptoms, functional level, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with SSc according to smoking status and to assess the correlation between cigarette consumption and these parameters in patients with SSc. Seventy-two patients with SSc (smoker group; n = 35 or nonsmoker group; n = 37) were included. The pulmonary function test was measured with a spirometer. Respiratory symptoms were questioned and the perceived severity of dyspnea and fatigue was evaluated. The functional levels were determined by questioning the patients' average daily walking distance, exercise habits, and daily sedentary time. HRQoL was assessed by Scleroderma Health Assessment Questionnaire. The rate of respiratory symptoms including dyspnea, cough, and sputum were higher in the smoker group (p<.001, p =.041, and p<.001, respectively). Also, the perceived severity of dyspnea and fatigue was higher in the smoker group (p <.05). The mean daily walking distance, exercise habits, and overall HRQoL were lower (p =.004, p =.002, and p =.034, respectively) and the sedentary time and vascular complications were higher (p<.001 and p =.038, respectively) in the smoker group. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the pulmonary function test (p >.05). There was a weak to moderate correlation between cigarette consumption and respiratory symptoms, dyspnea and fatigue severity, functional level, and HRQoL in the smoker group (0.001 ≤ p ≤.024). Smoking may increase respiratory symptoms and vascular complications and decrease the functional level and HRQoL in patients with SSc. To maintain functional independence in patients with SSc, awareness of the harms of smoking should be increased and smoking cessation should be encouraged, along with physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs including exercise and physical activity recommendations. Elderly individuals with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease (PD), may experience difficulties when performing functional tasks. To analyze the handgrip strength, pulling force, and ground reaction forces (GRF) of individuals with and without PD when boarding a bus while performing both simple (ST) and dual tasks (DT). This case-control study addressed 31 individuals with PD (GPD) and 30 healthy individuals (GHI). Assessments were performed in ST and DT situations using a bus model (prototype). Handgrip strength and pulling force were measured in both upper limbs using a dynamometer, and GRF was measured using a force platform. The GPD's and GHI's performances were compared in both ST and DT, and the individuals were classified as fallers according to the Falls Efficacy Scale. In the inter-group comparison, the GPD presented significantly lower maximum force using their right hand, in handgrip strength (30.43 vs. 36.62, P =.022), and pulling force (10.77 vs 12.81, P =.037). The left hand's pulling force proved to be the most demanding for the GPD, during ST (6.35 vs. 4.76, P =.006) and DT (6.32 vs 4.74, P =.008). The GPD also took longer to perform ST (6.14 vs. 4.67, P <.001) and DT (6.08 vs. 4.81, P =.002). Additionally, the GPD was more afraid of falling compared to the GHI (34.74 vs. 24.77, P <.001). Boarding a bus is a complex task for individuals with PD because they present lower maximum strength in the upper limbs and more significant functional expenditure than their healthy counterparts. Aortic surgery is often performed in elderly patients, and these patients have a high risk of postsurgical muscle weakness. To reinforce purposeful postsurgical rehabilitation, we aimed to investigate the factors associated with postsurgical muscle weakness in patients who underwent thoracic aortic surgery. This retrospective cohort study analyzed data of consecutive patients who underwent elective thoracic aortic surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, and whose knee extensor isometric muscle strength (KEIS) were measured pre- and postoperatively at University Hospital between January 2012 and December 2018. The primary outcome was percent change in KEIS (% change in KEIS). Multivariate linear regression analysis was used to identify independent risk factors for % change in KEIS. Overall, 218 patients were included. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that mechanical ventilation time, days from initial sitting to 100 m walking, and the number of exercises in the rehabilitation room were associated with % change in KEIS. This study may serve as a reference to stratify patients at risk of postsurgical muscle weakness. The inclusion of families in intervention programs for infants may be more effective in ensuring adherence and positive outcomes. Approaches that include natural and enriched environments that provide communication and family interaction are important in the rehabilitation of high-risk infants. To compare the effectiveness of Family Collaborative Approach (FCA) and Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT)-based family training. High-risk infants (n = 63) with a mean age of 32.60 ± 4.53 months received early intervention for 12 weeks. Prechtl's General movements (GMs) assessment, Hammersmith Neonatal Neurological Examination (HNNE), Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE), BAYLEY-III Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, and Third Addition (BSID-III) were performed. Significant differences between groups were found in HINE scores at the 3rd, 6th, and 12th months (p ≤.028), and in BSID-III scores at the 6th month (cognitive, language, and motor) (p <.001) and the 12th month (language) (p =.031). There was significant difference between NDT and control group in 3rd month HINE scores and Reflex&Reactions scores (p ≤.021). FCA group and NDT group was significantly different from control group in 6th month HINE (p =.032) and 12th month HINE scores (p =.007). FCA group significantly different from NDT group (p ≤.002) and control group (p <.001) in 6th month BSID-III cognitive, language, and motor scores. There was significant difference between FCA and control group in 12 month BSID-III language scores (p =.024). Despite the association of genetic factors with falls, balance, and lower extremity functioning, interaction of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism with fear of falling (FOF) in relation to stepping performance has, to the best of our knowledge, not been investigated in older adults. The purpose of this study was to examine the interaction effects of the ACE I/D polymorphism with FOF in relation to stepping performance in older adults. Eighty-eight community-dwelling adults 60 years or older participated in a cross-sectional observational study. Participants completed tests of rapid and distance stepping, and self-reported FOF (yes/no). Participants provided saliva for ACE genotyping. General linear models evaluated ACE genotype × FOF interaction effects in relation to stepping performance. The α level was set at 0.05. The ACE I/D polymorphism exhibited significant interaction effects (p for interactions 0.002 ≤ p ≤.04) with FOF in relation to stepping speed. Relationships between FOF and stepping speed varied among ACE genotypes. The insertion/insertion (II) genotype was significantly associated (p =.01) with slow stepping in individuals with, but not without FOF (p >.05). Variation in relationships between FOF and stepping speed among ACE genotypes suggests a role for the ACE I/D polymorphism in modifying relationships between FOF and stepping speed in older adults. The association of the ACE II genotype with slow stepping performance in individuals with, but not without FOF, suggests that older adults with the ACE II genotype and FOF may be at increased risk for poor stepping performance and associated functional declines. To identify the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) values that can be used to discriminate the use of a walking aid and the BBS sub-items that reveal the differences in the use of walking aids among hospitalized older adults with a hip fracture The cases of 77 older adults (age 80.8 ± 7.5 years) with a hip fracture who were able to walk independently in the hospital were retrospectively analyzed. A receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) analysis was used to identify BBS scores that optimized the identification of subjects with different levels of aids. The BBS sub-items identifying differing among the walking aids were identified by a classification and regression tree analysis The BBS scores were highest for no aid, a cane, and a walker, in that order. The ability to walk without an aid and the ability to walk without a walker showed moderate AUCs (0.824 and 0.865) with cutoff values of 51.5 and 45.5 points, respectively. Labor pain is one of the most severe pains experienced by a woman during her life. Interferential current (IFC) is a type of transcutaneous electrical stimulation that can reduce pain, especially deep ones. This randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) aimed to study the effects of quadripolar IFC on pain and the duration of the active phase of labor in primiparous women. In this RCT, 60 primiparous women were randomized into two groups of IFC and sham IFC. The IFC group received IFC in two periods. The sham group received sham IFC. Primary outcomes were labor pain in different times of active phase and duration of active phase, and secondary outcomes were delivery satisfaction; the number of infants transferred to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), fetal heart rate (FHR) disorders, Apgar score, partograph variables, and adverse side effects were recorded. Between-group changes showed a significant decrease in labor pain during the active phase in the IFC group compared to the sham IFC group (mean difference (MD) = −0.95; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = −1.35 to −0.55; P <.001). The mean of active phase duration was significantly shorter in the IFC group than in the sham IFC group (MD = −38.25; 95% CI = −62.84 to −13.67; P =.003). This study showed the effectiveness of interferential electrical stimulation during labor to reduce pain and duration of the active phase, which can be valuable in improving the quality of care and encouraging natural childbirth. The purpose of this study was to: 1) investigate the differences in the needs of end-stage cancer who can move independently, using mobility aids (MA), or are bedridden; and 2) determine the effects of these different mobility levels on the patients' current quality of life (QoL), fatigue, and mental conditions. The study employed an exploratory prospective cross-sectional study design, which was carried out in two hospitals. The study included 99 end-stage cancer. The mobility levels of the patients were evaluated in three groups: Group 1: bedridden; Group 2: mobile with MA; and Group 3: ambulatory (under supervision or fully independent). A core cancer-specific questionnaire-integrating system for assessing health-related QOL (EORTC-QLQ-C15-PAL), the Piper Fatigue Scale (PFS), and the Hospital Anxiety-Depression scale were utilized. The median age was 60years (31–83). Cancer types were as follows: gastrointestinal (45.5%), lung (38.4%), breast (4%), genitourinary system (4%), and others (8%). Forty-two percent of the patients were completely bedridden, 42.2% used MA, and 15.2% were independently ambulatory. The EORTC QLQ-C15-PAL physical (=.000) and emotional function values (=.029) differed among mobilization statuses. There was a significant difference among mobilization groups, in terms of behavioral values, in the PFS (=.006). Surgery is often prescribed to patients with significant reduction in standing time (ST) and walking time (WT) due to degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS). The efficacy of a multimodal physical rehabilitation protocol (MPRP) in improving ST and WT in patients with DLS is not known. To investigate the effect of MPRP on ST and WT in patients with DLS and compare the results with similar patients treated with other physiotherapy treatment (OPT) methods. Outcomes including numerical pain rating scale (NPRS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI) scores, ST and WT were compared in patients in the MPRP and OPT groups. Data from 25 patients in MPRP group and 10 patients in OPT group were analyzed. In the MPRP group, the mean NPRS and ODI scores, ST, and WT improved significantly (p <.0001) after MPRP at a mean follow-up of 328 days. The mean NPRS score was significantly lower (p =.0001); mean ST (p =.03), and mean WT (p =.03) were significantly higher; and the mean NPRS improvement (p <.0001), mean ST improvement (p =.001), and mean WT improvement (p =.008) were significantly higher in MPRP group when compared to the OPT group at final follow-up. Patients with low-grade DLS showed significant improvement in ST and WT after MPRP when compared to similar patients who underwent other physiotherapy treatments. Kinesiophobia is a common symptom associated with high disability, and has been observed in patients with migraine. However, the association between kinesiophobia and clinical factors in this population is unknown. To assess the fear of falling, dizziness disability, and migraine disability in patients with migraine, considering the presence of kinesiophobia. Eighty patients with migraine completed the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia and were divided into two groups according to the questionnaire cutoff point: migraine without kinesiophobia (MoK, n = 39) and migraine with kinesiophobia (MK, n = 41). Fear of falling, dizziness disability, and migraine disability were assessed in both groups using validated questionnaires. The MK group presented higher scores on dizziness disability, fear of falling, and migraine disability compared to the MoK (p <.05). Kinesiophobia can explain 29% of the variance in dizziness disability and 18% of migraine disability. Both kinesiophobia and the presence of dizziness can explain 14% of fear of falling variability. Also, kinesiophobia is associated with the risk of presenting fear of falling (Prevalence Ratio = 2.4, p =.012), and migraine disability (Prevalence Ratio = 2.6, p =.01). The presence of kinesiophobia should be considered in clinical practice when evaluating migraine, as it is associated with increased levels of fear of falling, dizziness disability, and migraine disability. Subacromial pain syndrome is a common musculoskeletal shoulder problem. The accuracy of clinical tests is low and techniques such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging have been added to set up a diagnosis. Previous researchers have usually only examined the symptomatic shoulder. However, there might be similar findings in the asymptomatic shoulder. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of structural abnormalities of both shoulders in patients with clinically diagnosed unilateral subacromial pain syndrome using diagnostic ultrasound. Bilateral ultrasound examinations were performed in 115 consecutive patients, 54 men and 61 women. The patients were recruited from primary care centers in the area of Stockholm, Sweden. Abnormal ultrasound findings were found in both shoulders and increased with age (p =.0004). Bursitis was the most common ultrasound finding and significantly more prevalent in the symptomatic shoulder compared to the asymptomatic shoulder (90%:74%; p =.0021), though 73% of the bursitis were bilateral. Supraspinatus is the most vulnerable tendon of the rotator cuff in both shoulders. In terms of partial-thickness tears and tendinosis, the tendon was affected more commonly in the symptomatic shoulder compared to the asymptomatic shoulder (30%:14%: 14%; p =.0026) and (24%:10%; p =.0054), respectively, but for calcification no significant difference between the shoulders was found (18%:12%; 0.1988). Ultrasound detected shoulder abnormalities were present in both symptomatic and asymptomatic shoulders. Bursitis and partial-thickness tears were more common in the affected shoulder when compared to the unaffected shoulder. We explore home use of a portable bi-level ventilation device among patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and describe changes in the patients' physical activity levels, perceived dyspnea, anxiety and depression, as well as their satisfaction with the device, after one month of use. Methods. Forty patients with severe COPD and exertional dyspnea were instructed to use VitaBreath® device (Philips, Respironics) during efforts or activities of daily living for 4 weeks, and agreed to answer questionnaires on anxiety, depression, dyspnea and physical activity. Results. Twenty-six (65%) patients used the VitaBreath® device for four weeks, while 14 patients (35%) stopped early for various reasons. Among patients who completed the 4-week course, no differences in dyspnea and physical activity were observed between baseline and follow-up (p-values 0.41 and 0.19, respectively). Thirteen (50%) and 15 (57%) patients experienced reduced anxiety and depression, respectively. Patients with greater functional impairment and less autonomy in activities of daily living tended to view the device more positively. Conclusion. Home use of portable bi-level positive-pressure ventilation devices by patients with COPD may alleviate disease-related anxiety and depression, particularly in more severe cases of COPD. Assessment-oriented group action (AGA) could be used to empower community-dwelling older adults to maintain their health by groups. AGA can be implemented with the support of a health professional to provide feedback to older adults on physical and cognitive function. To evaluate the effects of AGA. For this feasibility study, we enrolled 23 and 20 participants in the intervention and control groups, respectively. Thοse in the intervention group received feedback of their assessments and devised exercise plans with professional support. The participants performed their exercises over 12 weeks; the follow-up examination was conducted at 40 weeks. The control group only received feedback. The change in health-related consciousness and behavior was evaluated. Muscle strength and mass were measured and the timed up and go test, and the Brief-balance evaluation system test (BESTest) were performed. There were no significant differences in consciousness or behavior between the groups. The score was higher in the intervention than in the control group at 40 weeks in Section-I of the Brief-BESTest, indicating that the muscle strength contributed to balance function. It is believed that clinical management of osteoarthritis should address muscle weakness to improve physical function and prevent disability and frailty This sub-study investigated the effects of supervised progressive resistance training (RT), supervised Nordic Walking (NW), and unsupervised home-based exercise (HBE) on muscle and functional performance; and associations between these exercise-induced changes in persons with hip osteoarthritis. Forty-two patients with hip osteoarthritis were recruited from a larger RCT (NCT01387867). All the groups (RT, n = 15; NW, n = 12; HBE, n = 15) exercised 1 h 3 times/week for 4 months. Quadriceps cross-sectional area (QCSA, MRI-determined); quadriceps strength (QMVC); leg extensor power (LEP); functional performance (chair stands (30sCS); stair climbs (TSC); and 6-minute walk (6MWT)) were assessed at baseline and 4 months. Per protocol analyses (one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test) showed significant between-group differences for improvements in QCSA in the most symptomatic leg favoring RT versus NW (2.3 cm2, 95% CI [0.6, 3.9]) and HBE (2.3 cm2 [0.8, 3.9]); and 30sCS (1.8 repetitions [0.2–3.3]), and 6MWT (35.1 m [3.5–66.7]) favoring NW versus HBE. Associations existed between exercise-induced changes in QCSA and QMVC (r = 0.366, p =.019) for the most symptomatic leg and between changes in 6MWT and QMVC (r = 0.320, p =.04) and LEP (r = 0.381, p =.01), respectively, for the least symptomatic leg. Resistance training appeared effective for improving muscle mass, but less effective for improving muscle strength, power, and functional performance. Knowledge regarding the impact of curricula with behavioral medicine content and competencies (BMCC) on physical therapy (PT) students' clinical reasoning skills is lacking. The primary objective was to compare the clinical reasoning skills, focusing on clients' behavioral change, of entry-level PT students with or without BMCC in their curricula. The secondary objective was to compare students' attitudes and beliefs in a biomedical and biopsychosocial practice orientation. Swedish final-semester PT students (n = 151) completed the Reasoning 4 Change (R4C) instrument and the Pain Attitudes and Beliefs Scale for Physiotherapists. A blueprint was used for curricular categorization. The independent t-test was used. Students attending programs with BMCC curricula (n = 61) had superior scores compared with students without BMCC curricula (n = 90) in the following R4C variables, all of which were related to clinical reasoning focused on behavioral change: Knowledge, Cognition, Self-efficacy, Input from the client, Functional behavioral analysis, and Strategies for behavioral change. Students who did not receive BMCC curricula scored higher in the R4C contextual factors and reported a greater biomedical practice orientation than students receiving BMCC curricula. There was no difference in the biopsychosocial practice orientation between groups. Our findings support the benefit of structured entry-level PT curricula with BMCC on final-semester students' clinical reasoning skills focused on behavioral change and their level of biomedical practice orientation. Further, our findings elucidated educational opportunities to augment students' self-efficacy and strengthen their behavioral competencies in clinical reasoning. This study examined the effects of physical activity prescription (PAP) in patients after gastric bypass surgery. Patients' physical activity (PA) levels and outcomes were followed over their first postoperative year. Patients slated for bariatric surgery were randomized to a control group (n = 64) (basic information about postoperative PA) or an intervention group (n = 57) (also received physical therapist-prescribed PAP). Outcome measures were self-reported PA/exercise and sedentary time; and weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, and blood lipids; recorded pre-operatively and at 2, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. Follow-ups were conducted by nurses/dieticians. Trial registration: "Research and Development in Sweden" number 107371. There were no differences between the groups except for higher level of PA (579 vs. 182 minutes/week) six months after surgery (p =.046) and a larger decrease in cholesterol (−24 vs. −8%) after a year (p =.017) in the intervention group. Patients in both groups lost considerable weight, had reduced waist circumference, and increased PA (p <.001). Although marked differences between groups were not observed over one year, the intervention group increased its PA 6-months postoperatively, but not at other time points. Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common pelvic floor dysfunction in pregnancy. The relationship between biomechanical changes and pregnancy-related UI has not been fully elucidated. To investigate the association of various musculoskeletal and anthropometric changes in pregnancy that affect gestational UI. The study was conducted with 275 pregnant women. Ninety-three, 110 and 72 women were in first, second and third trimesters, respectively. Incontinence Impact Questionnaire for UI, Urogenital Distress Inventory-Short Form and Incontinence Severity Index were applied. Lumbar lordosis measurement was performed by Baseline Bubble Inclinometer while diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) measurement was carried out by finger-width method. Manual muscle test for rectus abdominis and right and left external oblique abdominal muscles, and Benign joint hypermobility test with Beighton scoring method were also applied as musculoskeletal measurements. Tape measurement at the waist, umbilical and hip levels, caliper with bi-iliac and bi-trochanteric diameters were also recorded as anthropometric measurements. Significant associated factors for UI were: umbilical DRA (OR = 1.57; p =.012); rectus abdominis muscle strength (values of 3 and below, OR = 1.2; p =.014); umbilical environment (OR = 1.1; p =.029); bi-iliac diameter (OR = 1.1; p =.05;) and bi-trochanteric diameter (OR = 1.3; p =.05), respectively. A method for assessing balance that differentiates between balance deficit can help guide effective interventions for preventing falls in older adults. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between balance control systems and falls, and to examine the ability of the Brief-Balance Evaluation Systems Test (BESTest) to evaluate balance deficits in older adults. Overall, 109 community-dwelling older adults participated in this study. The history of falls in the last year was investigated. Balance deficits were assessed using the Brief-BESTest, the functional reach test, the Timed up and Go Test, and the one leg balance test. We analyzed the difference between the fallers and non-fallers across two different age groups. Among younger-older group participants (age < 75 years), there were no significant differences between fallers and non-fallers across all variables. Among older-older group participants (age ≥ 75 years), there were significant differences in the Brief-BESTest total (p=.011; fallers, 13.5 versus non-fallers, 17.0) and section IV scores (postural responses of the Brief-BESTest; p=.026, 2.0 versus 5.0). There was no significant difference in other balance measurements. The postural responses assessed by the Brief-BESTest may serve important functions and may be associated with falls in older adults. The Patient Determined Disease Steps (PDDS) is a patient-reported outcome that measures disease severity in People with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS). It is crucial to have instruments in various languages to ease the use and interpretation of clinical and research findings among PwMS. To translate the PDDS into the Arabic language and explore its reliability and criterion validity with the EDSS, and convergent validity with fatigue, walking, and balance assessments. Backward and forward translation methods were used to generate the PDDS translated version (PDDS-A). A total of 115 PwMS, mean age: 33.7 (SD, 10.6) completed the PDDS-A, the EDSS, and the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale Arabic version (MFIS-A). A sub-sample N = 89 performed walking and balance assessments. The PDDS-A was reevaluated after 2–3 weeks to measure its test-retest reliability. There was a strong correlation between the PDDS-A and EDSS (rho = 0.864). PDDS-A was moderately associated with the MFIS-A total score (rho = 0.598) and its subcomponents (physical: rho = 0.642, and cognitive: rho = 0.474). The PDDS-A showed significant correlations with walking endurance and speed, and balance. There was excellent test-retest reliability: 0.942 (95% CI 0.896–0.968). Research is important for the development of physiotherapy practice, but several countries have a rather short history of physiotherapy as an academic profession. This study investigated physiotherapists' experiences and attitudes toward scientific research in Austria, where physiotherapists have only been qualifying at bachelor level since 2009. A convenience sample of 597 qualified physiotherapists completed an anonymous cross-sectional online survey. Most respondents were female (n = 467, 78.2%) and in age groups between: 26–35 years (n = 149, 25.0%); 36–45 years (n = 178, 29.8%); and 46–55 years (n = 173, 29.0%). Seventeen respondents (2.8%) held doctoral degrees, and 61 (10.2%) had substantial research experience beyond undergraduate or master-level student research. More positive research attitudes were observed in participants who were male, younger, without children, had completed their physiotherapy qualification since 2009, were engaged in teaching and education, and held postgraduate degrees. Most frequently reported barriers and/or enabling factors for physiotherapy research were time, training, finances and a "critical mass" of research activity. These findings highlight low levels of research activity among physiotherapists in Austria, despite general appreciation of the importance of research for the profession. Children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (hCP) experience a disorganized muscle activation pattern that adversely affect their ability to respond to balance perturbations. This study examined the effect of plyometric exercises on muscle-activation strategies and response-capacity to balance threats in children with hCP. In a pre-, posttest control-group study, 34 children with hCP were allocated randomly to either the control group (n = 17; received a traditional physical rehabilitation program, lasted for 45 minutes/session, twice/week for three successive months) or the plyometric group (n = 17; received a progressive plyometric training program in three blocks, twice/week over three months plus the traditional physical rehabilitation). Quadriceps/hamstring co-contraction ratio (Q/H Co-CR) and response-capacity to balance threats were assessed pre- and post-treatment. Post-treatment, the Q/H Co-CR and balance control improved significantly in the control (P =.03, P =.0003 respectively) and plyomteric group (P =.001, P ˂ 0.001 respectively). However, the plyometric group showed better improvements in Q/H Co-CR (P =.0001) and balance control (P =.027) when compared to the control group. Background: There is insufficient study using Kinesio taping (KT) in bladder problems. Objectives: To investigate the effects of pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) combined with KT on bladder symptoms, pelvic floor muscle strength, and quality of life in women with overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome and compare this combination with PFMT plus sham tape (ST). Methods: Women with OAB were randomly allocated into PFMT+KT and PFMT+ST groups. All patients were given PFMT for 6 weeks and applied taping according to groups. Before and after treatment, the OAB symptoms with the Overactive Bladder Assessment Form (OAB-V8) and Patients' Perception of Intensity of Urgency Scale (PPIUS), bladder function with a 3-day voiding diary, pelvic floor muscle strength with the Modified Oxford Scale, and quality of life with the King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ) were assessed. Results: OAB-V8, PPIUS, and KHQ scores decreased and the MOS improved in both groups (P <.05) after treatment. The intergroup comparisons revealed a further decrease in voids/day, voids/night, incontinence episodes/day, and personal limitation scores of the KHQ in the PFMT+KT group compared to the PFMT+ST group (P <.05). Background: Exercise training is recommended for all people with stable heart failure (HF) however adherence is poor. This study sought to describe exercise participation in recently hospitalized HF patients who participated in a 12-week exercise training program. The association between exercise training variables and improvement in 6-min walk distance (6MWD) was also investigated. Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of results from the intervention arm of the EJECTION-HF trial (ACTRN12608000263392), (n = 140). Exercise program attendance was defined according to session frequency (< 12 sessions vs ≥ 12 sessions) and attendance duration (< 6 weeks attendance vs ≥ 6 weeks) over the 12 weeks. Physical activity at baseline and follow up were reported according to self-report of 150 min of moderate intensity exercise per week. Primary outcome was change in 6MWD at 12 weeks. Results: Being physically active (OR 3.8, CI 1.3–11.5) and frequent program attendance (OR 2.7, CI 1.2–5.9) were associated with significant improvements in 6MWD. Program duration and baseline physical activity were not significantly associated with the outcome. Conclusions: Attainment of 150 min of moderate intensity exercise per week and at least weekly attendance at the program, were associated with significant improvements in 6MWD at follow up. To examine the kinematics of athletes with good and poor lumbopelvic stability (LPS) based on clinical rating criteria of single leg squat (SLS) and dip test (DT) The aim was to establish if good and poor LPS categorization is supported by differences in kinematic variables. Sixty-two recreational athletes had their LPS categorized using clinical rating criteria for SLS and DT as good, poor or neither good nor poor. Kinematic measures were examined in those with good (N = 8) or poor (N = 14) LPS and results compared to the rating criteria. Multiple clinical rating criteria for good and poor LPS groups were distinguished by kinematic measures. Smoothness of motion for both SLS and DT distinguished good and poor LPS. Minimal (good) or discernible movement (poor) out of the starting plane was confirmed with kinematic measures. For SLS these movements were: weight-bearing hip adduction, non-weightbearing hip abduction, pelvic rotation, and trunk sideflexion, and for DT: weightbearing hip adduction, non-weightbearing hip abduction and pelvic obliquity. Additionally, hip dissociation (SLS) distinguished good and poor LPS. Athletes with good and poor LPS have different kinematic measures in single leg squat and dip test. Objective: To investigate whether early postoperative pulmonary complications after abdominal surgery are associated with a lower performance in preoperative six-minute walk test. Methods: A cross-sectional cohort study of 50 participants who underwent elective abdominal surgery and performed the six-minute walk test within 48 hours prior to surgery were conducted. Postoperative pulmonary complications up to the seventh postoperative day were obtained from medical records. Results: Overall, 25 participants developed postoperative pulmonary complications. The mean (standard deviation) preoperative walked distances of the participants with and without postoperative pulmonary complications were, respectively, 444.8 (81.3) meters and 498.3 (63.7) meters (p =.013). The incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications was greater in the participants with walked distance < 400 meters. The multivariable logistic regression model revealed a significant association between postoperative pulmonary complications and preoperative walked distance (Odds ratio = 0.978, p =.010) in participants who underwent intestinal, stomach, or bile tract resection. Conclusions: This study found a high incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications in abdominal surgery participants and an association between lower preoperative physical capacity and the risk of postoperative pulmonary complications in participants who underwent intestinal, stomach, and biliary tract resection. Introduction: Individuals with co-morbid post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and pain have higher disability, pain, and pain catastrophizing beliefs than patients without PTSD. Pain neuroscience education (PNE) may be an effective tool to help those with PTSD and pain reduce maladaptive beliefs about pain. The purpose of this paper is to report the development and evaluation of a PNE curriculum for participants with PTSD and pain. Methods: After writing an initial draft of PNE for PTSD and pain, a panel of medical experts in PNE, PTSD, and rehabilitation reviewed the booklet. After addressing recommendations from the medical panel (n = 29), individuals with (n = 13) and without (n = 20) PTSD reviewed the booklet. Results: Overall, 89% of participants recommended the PNE booklet and 90% thought it would help patients with PTSD and pain. Although patients with PTSD rated the PNE booklet more critically than other participants, a particular support group (n = 4) rated the PNE booklet significantly different (p <.05) than remaining participants with PTSD (n = 9). Individuals with PTSD and pain were able to comprehend the PNE booklet at a comparable rate to an expert medical panel and participants without PTSD after adjusting for education levels (p =.12). Conclusions: Many patients with PTSD and pain avoid painful activities because they believe they are harmful. This research demonstrates that individuals with PTSD and pain can comprehend PNE that challenges these beliefs. Purpose: The mortality rate of cardiovascular diseases in such developing countries as Iran is on the rise. Despite sufficient evidence pointing to its efficacy, cardiac rehabilitation (CR) approach is only employed to a limited extent. In the present study, barriers to participation in center-based cardiac rehabilitation programs and patients' attitude toward home-based cardiac rehabilitation model were examined. Methods: In this study, 204 eligible patients for CR visiting an academic hospital were examined during the first three months of 2017. Patients had either abandoned rehabilitation programs midway through or had not attended one in the first place. Data about perceived barriers were collected using the modified Cardiac Rehabilitation Barriers Scale. Also, Patients' attitude toward home-based CR was collected using a pre-validated researcher-made questionnaire. Results: The results revealed that the most effective barriers were transportation problems (70%), travel costs (70%), considerable distance to the rehabilitation center (67%), and lack of insurance coverage for rehabilitation costs (64%), respectively. Patients with longer than 30-minute drive time were less likely to attend in training sessions in the center. In addition, the important patient expectations about home-based CR programs included: communication with specialists, training before entering the rehabilitation program, and making periodic visits to maintain motivation and adhere to the home-based CR programs. Conclusions: The results revealed that logistical factors were the major barriers to participation in rehabilitation programs. To determine whether patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with possible benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) are managed in accordance with best practice guidelines, and whether physiotherapists are involved in their care. Retrospective observational study. Ninety-six consecutive patients presenting to one of three EDs with vertigo, dizziness or imbalance symptoms documented at triage. Individuals with a clear non-vestibular cause of symptoms were excluded. Proportional adherence to clinical practice guidelines by medical and physiotherapy clinicians, primary diagnosis, incidence of falls, admission to hospital, and referral to a physiotherapy service. Adherence to clinical practice guidelines by both professions was low, with only 25 (26%, 95% CI: 18–36%) and 3 (14%, 95% CI: 4–36%) patients assessed by a medical clinician or physiotherapist, respectively, receiving the gold-standard Dix–Hallpike test. Sixty-four (67%) individuals were given a diagnosis of undifferentiated dizziness. Of the 26 (27%) patients with a primary BPPV diagnosis, only three (12%) were treated with a canalith-repositioning technique, and four (15%) reviewed by a physiotherapist. Early mobilization can be employed to minimize the duration of intensive care. However, a protocol combining neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) with early mobilization has not yet been tested in ICU patients. Our aim was to assess the efficacy of NMES, exercise (EX), and combined therapy (NMES + EX) on duration of mechanical ventilation (MV) in critically ill patients. The participants in this randomized double-blind trial were prospectively recruited within 24 hours following admission to the intensive care unit of a tertiary hospital. Eligible patients had 18 years of age or older; MV for less than 72 hours; and no known neuromuscular disease. Computer-generated permuted block randomization was used to assign patients to NMES, EX, NMES + EX, or standard care (control group). The main endpoint was duration of MV. Clinical characteristics were also evaluated and intention to treat analysis was employed. One hundred forty-four patients were assessed for eligibility to participate in the trial, 51 of whom were enrolled and randomly allocated into four groups: 11 patients in the NMES group, 13 in the EX group, 12 in the NMES + EX group, and 15 in the control group (CG). Duration of MV (days) was significantly shorter in the combined therapy (5.7 ± 1.1) and NMEN (9.0 ± 7.0) groups in comparison to CG (14.8 ± 5.4). Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Bio-Electro-Magnetic-Energy-Regulation (BEMER) magneto-therapy on pain and functional outcome in complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS-I). We hypothesized that BEMER therapy, based on its declared effects on microcirculation, could be beneficial in the treatment of this condition. Methods: This was a randomized controlled double-blind pilot study that included 30 patients with CRPS-I. Patients were divided into two groups: a study group, in which the rehabilitation program was combined with BEMER therapy for 10 consecutive days, and a control group, in which the rehabilitation program was combined with a sham BEMER treatment. Outcome measures (Visual Analogic Scale pain; Hand Grip Strength; Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand ; Maryland Foot Score) were taken at the beginning and end of treatment, and at 1 month follow-up. Results: The study demonstrated that the group treated with BEMER combined with rehabilitation yielded better results in the short term, in terms of pain reduction and functional improvement both at the upper and lower limbs. Conclusions: Data from the present pilot study suggest that BEMER therapy can be indicated, in combination with traditional rehabilitation programs, for the treatment of CRPS-I. Background: Junior physiotherapists require satisfactory clinical skills to work effectively within the acute hospital setting for service quality and consistency. Objective: To investigate the effects of stream-specific clinical training on junior physiotherapist self-efficacy, self-rated confidence, and self-rated ability to work independently during weekend shifts. Design: Prospective cohort study. Participants: Eighteen junior physiotherapists. Methods: Physiotherapists undertook 8 h of stream-specific education in: pediatrics, women's health, neuro-medical, musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, and critical care over 8 weeks. Learning objectives were evaluated using a self-efficacy (0–100) scale and self-rated confidence was measured with a 4-point Likert scale (not confident to independent). Self-rated ability to independently work weekend shifts was measured dichotomously (yes/no). Results: Participants completed an average of three stream-specific programs in the study period. Post-training, mean improvement in self-efficacy across objectives ranged from 2.9 (95% CI −8.7 to 14.5) to 43.3 (95% CI 4.8–81.8) points, p < 0.05 for 80% of objectives. Self-rated confidence scores improved for 45.6% of stream-specific learning objectives; 52.8% were unchanged and 1.7% reported a decrease in confidence. Self-rated ability to work stream-specific weekend shifts increased from 56–70%, but no stream achieved a significant increase in staff able to independently work weekend shifts (p range 0.10 to 1.0). Conclusions: A stream-specific education program increased junior physiotherapists' self-efficacy and self-rated confidence but not perceived ability to work independently on weekends. Results were non-randomized and actual practice change was not assessed. Future studies could investigate different educational structures in a blinded, randomized manner on clinical practice change. Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the functional status of patients 12 months after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) who underwent progressive strengthening or standard of care rehabilitation to older adults without knee joint pain. Methods: This cross-sectional design study included 165 participants in the progressive strengthening group, 40 participants in the standard of care group, and 88 older adults (control group). The Knee Outcome Survey – Activity of Daily Living, knee active range of motion (ROM), quadriceps strength, and performance tests were compared between groups using a one-way ANOVA. The proportions of participants in both TKA groups who achieved the lower bound of the 95% confidence interval of the control group were compared using a Fisher's exact test. Results: Significant between-group effects were found for all variables (p < 0.001). The control group had better outcomes than both the progressive strengthening and standard of care groups (p < 0.001). Compared to the standard of care group, a higher proportion of participants in the progressive strengthening group achieved the lower bound cutoff for active knee extension ROM (p = 0.042), quadriceps strength (p = 0.032), and stair climbing time (p = 0.029). Conclusion: More participants in the progressive strengthening group had physical function that was similar to the healthy control group, when compared to the standard of care group. Objective: To determine the frequency of physiotherapist-administered aerobic exercise testing/training, the proportion of physiotherapists who administer this testing/training, and the barriers that currently exist across different practice environments. A secondary objective is to identify the learning needs of physiotherapists for the development of an education curriculum in aerobic exercise testing and training with electrocardiograph (ECG) administration and interpretation. Design: National, cross-sectional survey. Participants: Registered physiotherapists practicing in Canada. Results: Out of 137 participants, most (75%) physiotherapists prescribed aerobic exercise on a regular basis (weekly); however, 65% had never conducted an aerobic exercise test. There were no significant differences in frequency of aerobic exercise testing across different practice environments or across years of physiotherapy experience. Physiotherapists perceived the main barriers to aerobic exercise testing as being a lack of equipment/space (78%), time (65%), and knowledge (56%). Although most (82%) were uncomfortable administering 12-lead ECG-monitored aerobic exercise tests, 60% stated they would be interested in learning more about ECG interpretation. Conclusion: This study found that physiotherapists are regularly implementing aerobic exercise. This exercise was infrequently guided by formal aerobic exercise testing, which could increase access to safe and effective exercise within the optimal aerobic training zone. As well, this could facilitate training in patients with cardiovascular diagnoses that require additional testing for medical clearance. Increased ECG training and access to equipment for physiotherapists may augment pre-screening aerobic exercise testing. Background: Kinesiologic taping has been studied for managing diverse types of dysfunctions and pain, but not for managing pain during labor. Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of using kinesiologic tape (KT) during labor relative to pain, maternal satisfaction, and obstetric and neonatal outcomes. Method: The study was a single-blind randomized controlled trial composed of 60 pregnant women divided into two groups. In the kinesiologic tape group (KTG), the tape was applied to the region of spinal nerves T10–L1 and S2–S4; in the control group (CG), the tape was applied to the region of spinal nerves T1–T4. Study participants were low-risk pregnant women with spontaneous onset of labor and no previous Cesarean section. Outcomes evaluated were pain, duration of labor, type of delivery, uterotonic and anesthetic requirement, neonatal vitality, and satisfaction with delivery and tape use. Intention-to-treat analysis was performed, and risk ratios with a 95% CI were estimated. Results: After the first hour of tape use, a significant increase in pain was observed in the CG (p = 0.002). However, there were no differences between groups relative to the remaining outcomes assessed. In the KTG, 59% of participants reported satisfaction with tape use, whereas in the CG, 44% reported satisfaction with tape use. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the concurrent validity of using hydraulic dynamometers in comparison to the gold standard isokinetic dynamometers in measuring wrist and forearm strength. Materials and methods: Healthy adults between the ages of 18–65 participated, including 24 participants, 8 men and 16 women. The examiner used a handheld dynamometer, forearm/wrist dynamometer, and an isokinetic dynamometer to measure force/torque production in forearm rotation and wrist flexion/extension using a standardized protocol of two handle types for each motion. Sequence of testing was randomized. The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients and paired t-tests. Results: When matched for handle type, three of the four correlations between the strength measurements taken with the different dynamometers were moderate to high with Pearson product moment coefficients ranging from 0.72 to 0.96; the screwdriver handle demonstrated less than acceptable correlation (r = 0.45, 0.67 for wrist flexion and extension, respectively). There were significant differences in most of the force/torque values obtained by different handle types for wrist and forearm motions. Discussion and conclusions: Overall, the dynamometers demonstrated acceptable correlations supporting concurrent validity for measuring forearm and wrist strength, except with the screwdriver handle. However, different tools, positions, and handle interfaces provided different absolute values, therefore the tools cannot be used interchangeably. Background: Whole body vibration (WBV) training improves maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of knee extensors, postural balance, functional capacity, and quality of life (QOL) in several diseases. The objective was to assess the efficacy of WBV training in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis (HD) in the interdialytic period. Method: A randomized, controlled trial study with concealed allocation, intention-to-treat analysis, and triple blinding. Sixteen patients with CKD of both genders aged over 40 years were allocated in two groups, the WBV group or the sham group, training 2 times a week for 12 weeks. The primary outcome was knee extensor muscle strength, and the secondary outcomes were quadriceps thickness, distance walked, balance, and QOL. Results: The WBV group improved MVIC of knee extensors with a difference between groups in improvement of 117.29 N (95% CI, 32.25-202.24) at the end of training. The other outcomes were not different between groups. Practical applications: The WBV program has shown to be effective and may be able to help in prescribing the appropriate training program for CKD. Conclusion: WBV training improves MVIC of knee extensors in patients with CKD on HD in the interdialytic period. WBV training could be considered in the management of patients with CKD. Background: Postoperative pain and severe side effects of opioid analgesics present a clinical challenge after cardio-thoracic surgery. In this study, the impact of Kinesio® taping on postoperative morbidity after median sternotomy was observed. Methods: Thirty-nine patients (mean age 66 ± 9 years, CI: 63.28; 68.98) who underwent median sternotomy between 09/2014 and 11/2014 participated in this prospective randomized controlled trial. Patients were assigned into a treatment on a non-treatment group. Patients in the treatment group were taped after leaving the intensive care unit. We assessed, pain, consumption of pain medication, the subjective estimation of patients’ ability to breathe, radiologic and microbial abnormalities as well as adverse effects resulting from the tape use daily until discharge. To determine the patients’ satisfaction a discharge questionnaire was offered after completion of data. Results: Patients who were treated with tape report significantly less pain (2.14 ± 0.5, CI: 1.1; 3.13) than patients from the control group (4.16 ± 0.6, CI: 2.92; 5.41, p = 0.01). The need for opioid pain medication, as assessed by total analgesic consumption per patient, was significantly less in the treatment group (1.2 ml ± 0.4 ml, CI: 0.40 ml; 2.01 ml) versus (3.1 ml ± 0.5 ml, CI: 2.0 ml; 4.2 ml, p = 0.01). The subjective estimation of patients’ ability to breathe was significantly better (p < 0.001) and the satisfaction was higher in the Kinesio® tape group compared to the control group. Taped patients had a mean hospitalization of 10 ± 1 day (CI: 8.74 days; 11.78 days) untapped patients stayed for 11 ± 1 days (CI: 9.17 days; 11.83 days). Adverse effects from the tape treatment were not observed. Conclusions: Kinesio® taping after median sternotomy is a low-risk, non-pharmacologic, cost effective, and promising method for improving patients’ breathing conditions, reducing postoperative pain, pain medication consumption, and thus, potential adverse effects of analgesics. Background: Trunk control impairment often accompanies multiple sclerosis (MS). Trunk stability is necessary for movements of extremities, as are selective trunk movements for normal gait. Measuring trunk function is thus of interest. Methods: We examined the relationships between the Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS1.0 and TIS2.0) and the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), 5 sit-to-stand test (5STS), Timed Up and Go test (TUG), 10-m timed walk test (10TW), 2-min walk test (2MWT), Falls Efficacy Scale – International, and 12-item MS Walking Scale (MSWS-12) in 47 outpatients. We determined construct validity by calculating the degree to which the TIS versions produced different scores between known groups: use or nonuse of walking aid, MS disability status, and whether participants experienced a fall or not during 14 weeks. Results: TIS correlated moderately with BBS and 5STS; moderately (TIS1.0) or weakly (TIS2.0) with TUG, 10TW, and 2MWT; and weakly to moderately with MSWS-12 in subgroups with Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) >6.0. No other clear correlation patterns were found. TIS did not discriminate between known groups. Conclusions: TIS1.0 is recommended for individuals with MS (EDSS score 4.0–7.5). Patients with low back pain (LBP) often display faulty beliefs and cognitions regarding their pain experience. Pain neuroscience education (PNE) aims to alter the pain experience by targeting these faulty beliefs and cognitions. One PNE strategy aims specifically to reframe commonly held beliefs about tissues by patients with LBP as the single source of pain. In line with this reasoning, it is hypothesized that physical therapists (PT) treating patients with LBP may indeed experience similar, if not worse, pain experiences while treating a patient with LBP. To date, this assumption has never been studied. A PT LBP questionnaire was developed, validated and distributed to a convenience sample of attendees of an international PT conference. One-hundred and ten PTs completed the questionnaire for a 71% response rate. Ninety percent of the PTs reported having experienced LBP, with 27% at the conference experiencing LBP at the time. Of the PTs that have experienced LBP 75% reported not having received any imaging; 81% no formal diagnoses, 58% no treatment and 86% not having missed work due to LBP. Eighty-six percent of therapists reported having experienced LBP while treating a patient with LBP, with 50% convinced their LBP was higher than the LBP experienced by the patient they were treating. The results from this study indicate PTs often treat patients with LBP while suffering LBP. It is suggested that this knowledge may potentially help patients with LBP reconceptualize their LBP experience leading to expedited recovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To compare the effect of active exercise and manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) on postoperative wound healing complications, shoulder range of motion (ROM) and upper limb (UL) perimetry in women undergoing radical mastectomy for breast cancer. Methods: Controlled non-randomized clinical trial with 89 women undergoing breast cancer surgery with axillary lymph node dissection (Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials: 906). Women were matched for staging, age and body mass index, with 46 women allocated to the exercise group and 43 in the MLD group, receiving 2 weekly sessions during one month. Assessments were performed in the preoperative and 60 d after surgery, including inspection, palpation, goniometry and perimetry. Results: No significant difference existed between groups relative to individual and clinical surgical characteristics. The incidence of seroma, number of punctures performed, dehiscence and infection was similar in both groups. A comparison of shoulder ROM and UL perimetry between groups, obtained in the preoperative and postoperative period, did not show any significant difference. Conclusion: The performance of active exercise or MLD did not demonstrate difference in wound healing complications, shoulder ROM and UL perimetry at 60 d after surgery, suggesting that these techniques may be employed, according to the complaints or symptoms of each woman and physical therapist experience. This was a quasi-experimental study to compare the effects of center-based training with home-based training on physical function, quality of life and fall incidence in older adults. Fifty older adults were recruited to receive exercise training for 6 months. Participants in the center-based group received training under supervision of a physiotherapist at the day training center. Those in the home-based group received training assisted by a care worker at home. The outcome measures were the Elderly Mobility Scale (EMS), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), Short-form 12 (SF-12) and fall incidence. Assessments were performed on all participants before and after the 6-month intervention period. Center-based training supervised by a physiotherapist was found to have beneficial effects on physical function, quality of life and fall incidence while home-based training assisted by a care worker had no effect on physical condition and self-rated health status in community dwelling older adults. Service agents should provide center-based or home-based training to the ageing population in a user-friendly way with consideration of factors such as rehabilitation potential and accessibility of transportation. During pregnancy or postpartum period many women will experience some degree of pelvic girdle pain (PGP). In India, there is no information about the PGP prevalence and its associated factors evaluated during postpartum period. Purpose: To reveal the prevalence of PGP postpartum in Indian women and identify associated factors with PGP postpartum. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 284 postpartum women completed a questionnaire and underwent clinical examinations. The clinical examination included pain provocation tests for the pelvic as well as the active straight leg raise (ASLR) test. Possible associating factors were studied by using nonparametric tests and logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 116 postpartum women (41%) had reported PGP at the time of the examination. A stepwise logistic regression analysis was performed to reveal associated factors. In the final model, factors such as (1) Caesarean delivery (adjusted OR, 2.0; 95% CI, 1.3-4.9); (2) ASLR test score ≥4 (adjusted OR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.2-3.3); (3) Unilateral P4 test (adjusted OR, 1.8; 95% CI, 1.1-3.0); and (4) Sitting position during feeding (adjusted OR, 1.5; 95% CI, 0.9-2.8) were associated with the PGP. Conclusion: We found a high prevalence of PGP in Indian women during the first three months of postpartum period. Our finding suggests that unilateral posterior pelvic pain provocation test (P4), ASLR test score ≥4, caesarean section delivery and sitting in breast-feeding posture were associated with increased risk of PGP during postpartum. Background/Purpose: Barriers and enablers of physical activity have been investigated, but it remains unclear what middle-aged adults' physical activity preferences are. Two physical activity interventions were compared to determine barriers, enablers and preferences for physical activity format in sedentary, community-dwelling 50- to 65-year-olds. Methods: Using mixed methods, 37 Physical Activity at Home (PAAH) participants took part in focus groups at the end of the intervention period and completed the Active Australia Survey (AAS). Participants were divided into three sub-groups: (1) group exercise attendees (GA, n = 14); (2) group exercise non-attendees (GNA, n = 9); and (3) physiotherapist-led home-based physical activity program attendees (HB, n = 14). Focus groups were audio-taped, transcribed, coded and analysed using an inductive thematic approach. Thirty-seven exit telephone calls with GNA were included in the analysis. Results: Cost, self-efficacy, work and carer commitments were major themes identified for GA and GNA. HB participants reported fewer barriers and a number of enablers, including flexibility of the program and physiotherapist instruction. HB and GNA were younger than GA ( p< 0.05), more likely to be in paid employment and GNA participants were insufficiently active ( p ≤ 0.01) . All participants preferred some home-based physical activity, although a variety of formats was indicated. Conclusion: The barriers, enablers and preferences indicate that the physiotherapist-led home-based physical activity program with initial face-to-face contact and telephone support may increase the adoption and maintenance of physical activity in middle-aged adults, particularly for those not interested in, or unable to attend, group exercise. The best test to assess dual task (DT)-related falls' risk is not known. The aim of this study was to investigate differences between community-dwelling fallers and non-fallers on a variety of simple task combinations. Twenty-seven adults, aged 65 years or older, took part. Forty-eight DT tests and one triple task (TT) test were conducted. Fallers had longer walking time when avoiding a moving obstacle and performing a motor task and longer walking time when triple tasking, as suggested by a measure of proportionate difference between single and DT/TT conditions ( p = 0.014 and 0.044, respectively). The absolute difference in accuracy on a visuospatial task suggested that fallers were more accurate than non-fallers when combined with walking with turns and when triple tasking ( p = 0.048 and 0.030, respectively). Fallers were less accurate in naming animals than non-fallers when combined with a bending task ( p = 0.009). These results indicate that fallers might prioritise tasks based on perceived risk, which highlights the importance of task selection when designing tests. Despite the small sample size, the data suggest that a TT test could be used to assess risk of falling. However, this needs to be confirmed with larger prediction studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pregnancy-related low back and pelvic pain is a worldwide problem. A large proportion of women still experience disabling daily back pain 2 years after childbirth, resulting in major changes in activities and general well-being. In spite of this, the source of pain and effective treatment are uncertain. Objective: To evaluate the short-term effects on function of a single corticosteroid injection treatment to the ischiadic spine in women with persistent pregnancy-related pelvic pain (PPPP). Methods: Thirty-six women were allocated to injection treatment with slow-release triamcinolone and lidocain or saline and lidocain, given once at the sacrospinous ligament insertion on the ischiadic spine bilaterally with follow-up at 4 weeks. Outcome measures were Disability Rating Index (DRI), self-rated functional health (SF-36), gait speed and endurance (6MWT), and strength and endurance of trunk muscles (isometric trunk extensor and flexor tests). Results: Women in the triamcinolone group showed significantly improved DRI ( p = 0.046), 6MWT ( p = 0.016), and isometric trunk extensor tests ( p = 0.004), as compared with the saline group. Close co-variation was shown between improved function and reduced pain intensity. Conclusions: Improved function was achieved among women with PPPP after a single injection treatment with slow-release corticosteroid. Our objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of manual therapy (MT) associated with upper limb (UL) exercises in women with impaired shoulder range of motion (ROM) after axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for breast cancer. A randomized, prospective, blinded clinical trial with 131 women with a ROM <- 100° for shoulder flexion and/or abduction on the first day postoperatively were evaluated. Sixty-six women were allocated to group exercises and 65 underwent the exercises followed by MT. Shoulder ROM was measured by goniometry, and function was evaluated by the Modified-University of California at Los Angeles Shoulder Rating Scale-the UCLA Scale, in the 1st, 6th, 12th, and 18th month after surgery. The chi-square test was used for the relationship between clinical characteristics and oncological treatment between groups, and ANOVA for repeat measures was used. No difference in recovery of shoulder ROM as well as UL function was observed between groups. Improvement in ROM was gradual from the 1st to the 18th month, and the function achieving a good classification at 18th month.
