Sugar feeding is known to enhance lifespan in many parasitoid species. Several species of phorid flies in the genus Pseudacteon (Diptera: Phoridae) have been introduced in the Southern U.S.A. for the biological control of imported fire ants of Solenopsis species (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Pseudacteon species are short-lived flies and little is known about their nutritional ecology. Results from previous studies in our laboratory show that one of the introduced species, Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier, is capable of feeding on sugar sources with a significant increase in lifespan. However, in Pseudacteon phorid flies, the degree to which sugar feeding can enhance the lifespan of other species is not clear, nor is it known whether there is a relationship between body size and longevity. In the present study, the effect of sugar feeding on the survival of three phorid fly species of different body sizes, Pseudacteon cultellatus Borgmeier, Pseudacteon curvatus Borgmeier and Pseudacteon obtusus Borgmeier, is investigated. For all three species, flies continuously provided with 40% or 20% sucrose solution live longer than individuals provided water only or 40% sucrose solution only on the first day of adult life. However, the degree to which sugar feeding enhanced longevity varies by species and is highest for P. obtusus. The data also indicate that longevity in Pseudacteon phorid flies is related to body size: the largest species (P. obtusus) lives significantly longer than the smaller species (P. cultellatus and P. curvatus). These results suggest that adults of all three Pseudacteon species are capable of feeding on sucrose solution and that sugar feeding can enhance their longevity. The significance of these results is discussed in relation to the field performance of Pseudacteon phorid flies as biological control agents of imported fire ants.

The longevity and nutrient levels of Pseudacteon tricuspis provided with 1 m solutions of five naturally occurring sugars, fructose, glucose, sucrose, trehalose and melezitose, are compared. All but melezitose, result in significant increases in the longevity of P. tricuspis in comparison with sugar-starved flies (flies provided with water only). Sugar-starved female and male P. tricuspis have an average longevity of 3.3 and 4.1 days, respectively. Provision of free water in addition to sugar solution is necessary for optimum longevity by female and male flies. Longevity is increased by 2.4–2.6-fold by the two monosaccharides, fructose and glucose, and by 2.6–2.8-fold by the disaccharides, sucrose and trehalose. Phorid flies provided with the trisaccharide sugar, melezitose, had a marginal increase in lifespan (approximately 1 day), but this is not significantly different from the longevity of sugar-starved flies. Significantly greater levels of total sugars are detected in P. tricuspis fed the disaccharide sugars (sucrose, trehalose) or the monosaccharide sugars (fructose, glucose), compared with flies provided with melezitose (trisaccharide), or to sugar-starved flies. Fructose is not detected in sugar-starved flies, or in flies fed glucose or trehalose. However, high levels of fructose are detected in flies fed sucrose or fructose, whereas levels of fructose in melezitose-fed flies are intermediate. In general, significantly greater glycogen levels are detected in P. tricuspis fed sucrose, glucose, trehalose or fructose, compared with melezitose-fed or sugar-starved flies. Levels of total sugars and glycogen in sugar-fed flies are positively correlated with wing length, possibly indicating a higher accumulation of storage sugars by larger flies. These results are discussed in relation to the nutritional ecology of the phorid fly.

The effect of sugar feeding on the survival of adult phorid fly Pseudacteon tricuspis is investigated. Flies fed 25% sucrose in aqueous solution continuously throughout their lifespan have greater longevity (mean ± SE longevity: female = 7.9 ± 0.8 days, male = 8.9 ± 0.9 days) than completely starved (provided no water and no sugar solution) flies, sugar-starved (provided water only) flies, or flies fed sugar solution only on their first day of adult life. Completely starved flies rarely lived beyond one day. Provision of water increases longevity by 2 days, and one full day of sugar feeding further increases longevity by an additional 1–2 days. Flies fed 50% sucrose have similar survivorship as those fed 25% sucrose. The temporal patterns of nutrient accumulation and utilization are also compared in P. tricuspis fed different diets: sugar-starved, sucrose-fed on the first day of adult life only, and sucrose-fed continuously. Adult P. tricuspis emerge with no gut sugars, and only minimal amounts of body sugars and glycogen. Although the levels of body sugars and glycogen decline gradually in sugar-starved flies, a single day of sugar feeding results in the accumulation of maximum amounts of gut sugars, body sugars and glycogen. High levels of these nutrients are maintained in female and male phorid flies fed on sucrose continuously over the observation period, whereas nutrient levels decline in flies fed only on the first day of life, beginning 1 day postfeeding. Female and male P. tricuspis emerge with an estimated 12.3 ± 2.3 and 7.2 ± 1 g of lipid reserves per fly, respectively. These teneral amounts represent the highest lipid levels detected in adult flies, irrespective of their diet, and are maintained over the life times of sucrose-fed female and male flies, but declined steadily in sugar-starved females. These data suggest that adult P. tricuspis are capable of converting dietary sucrose to body sugars and glycogen, but not lipids.

Summary Lifetime patterns of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism were compared in starved and sucrose-fed adults of the parasitoid Macrocentrus grandii (Goidanich) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). As expected, sucrose-fed individuals lived longer than did starved individuals. Macrocentrus grandii males and females eclosed with levels of simple storage sugars (presumably primarily trehalose) and glycogen that were below maximum levels recorded from sucrose-fed parasitoids. Both of these nutrients dropped to very low levels in starved individuals within 4 days post-emergence and were maintained at high levels in sucrose-fed individuals throughout their lives. Lipid reserves at emergence represented the highest lipid levels for both sexes in the two diet treatments, with levels declining over the lifetimes of males and females from both diet treatments. Our results therefore suggest that dietary sucrose is used to synthesize trehalose and glycogen, but not lipids in M. grandii. Also, in contrast to the patterns observed for the simple sugars and glycogen, lipid levels in starved individuals did not drop below levels observed in sugar-fed individuals. The average number of mature eggs carried by females at emergence was 33 and increased to approximately 85 in sucrose-fed and 130 in starved females by the age of 5 d in the absence of hosts. The egg maturation rate was therefore higher in starved than in sugar-fed females. Potential explanations for this unexpected result are discussed.

We investigated the behavioural response of male Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) to the fine-scale structure of an odour plume experimentally modified in a wind tunnel by using an air-pulsing device. Male H. zea flew upwind to pulsed filaments of a binary pheromone blend of (Z)-11-hexadecanal (Zll-16:Ald) and (Z)-9-hexadecanal in the ratio of 20:1. Sustained ~pwind flight in experimentally altered intermittent plumes was dependent on concentration, as well as the frequency of generation of odour filaments. At a loading of 10 ~g of the major pheromone component, Zll-16:Ald, which gave an emission rate of approximately that released by a female H. zea, sustained upwind flight and source contact correlated positively with filament delivery rate, becoming significant at a minimum filament delivery rate of 2/s. Decreases in upwind progress and source location were recorded at a loading of 1 ~g of Zll-16:A1d. At this suboptimal dosage, a high filament generation rate of 10/s was necessary for significant upwind progress and source contact. When an interspecific compound: (Z)-ll-hexadecenyl acetate (Zll-16:0Ac), was added to the attractive pheromone binary aldehyde blend of H. zea at a proportion of 10% of the major pheromone component, and pulsed from the same source, there was a significant reduction in sustained upwind progress and source location by males, indicating that Zll-16:0Ac is antagonistic to the upwind progress of H. zea. However, Zll-16:0Ac was less antagonistic when its filaments were isolated and alternated with pheromone filaments, indicating a strong effect of the synchronous arrival of odour filaments on the antenna needed for antagonism of upwind flight.

Adult Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) steering anemotactically upwind to a pheromone source in a wind tunnel, respond normally to, and alter their ground speed according to the direction and speed of, the movement of ground patterns beneath them. By manipulating this optomotor reaction component of their behaviour, studies were conducted on their flight duration. The results show a great deal of individual variation in flight duration, and the general data on single flights were skewed towards short flights. Pre-reproductive and inter-reproductive male and female beetles flew significantly longer than older beetles that had passed their peak of reproduction. There was no significant difference in the flight duration of male and female beetles at any age. The overall results suggest mat younger P. truncatus are capable of long-distance flights, and support the proposition that flight could be important in the spread of the beetle.

The effects of age, sex, mating status, pre-exposure to pheromone, resource (diet) quality, and starvation on the response of Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) to its male-produced aggregation pheromone were investigated.Age was an important factor determining the level of response to pheromone: young adults were more responsive than older adults.The suitability of the resource in which P.truncatus is present affected its dispersal tendency, but not its sensitivity to pheromone per se. Sex, mating status, brief prior exposure to pheromone, and starvation did not influence the response of the larger grain borer to pheromone.The orientation behaviour of the beetle is described, and it is proposed that the pheromone primarily functions as a ‘suitable resource location and colonization signal’.
