Cold atmospheric-pressure plasma is used widely for treating material surfaces and can be considered for modifying insulation paper (IP) to improve its surface performance. However, the mechanism for interaction between reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are the dominant components of such plasma, and IP is important for setting experimental parameter values but is difficult to observe experimentally. In this paper, reactive force field molecular simulation technology is used to study the mechanism for interaction between ROS (O atoms, OH radicals, and H2O2 molecules) and cellulose, which is the main component of IP. The results show that the ROS can abstract H atoms, and the H2O2 molecules can also abstract hydroxyl groups from a cellulose chain, resulting in changes to the cellulose chain structure, such as reductions of the hydroxyl groups and pyran rings and formations of aldehyde and vinyl groups. The three types of ROS exhibit different reactivities when reacting with the cellulose chain, and the difficulty of breaking different bonds therein also differs, which influences how the chemical groups change the cellulose chain. This study provides basic insight into the mechanism for interaction between ROS and IP at the atomic level as well as offering some guidance for practical experiments.

The 57th annual meeting of the APS Division of Plasma Physics (DPP) was held November 16–20, 2015 in Savannah, Georgia. The meeting brings together researchers (undergraduate students through retirees) from all areas of plasma physics. 1887 abstracts were included in the program, approximately 200 more than the previous year. The presentations included five invited review talks, 97 invited talks, three invited postdeadline talks, and four tutorials. Furthermore, there were approximately 1780 contributed presentations, with about 40% oral and 60% poster. Three mini-conferences were held concurrently.

We present in this Special Issue of Physics of Plasmas the review, tutorial, and invited papers of the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society’s (APS) Division of Plasma Physics. This was the 52nd year of this meeting, and it was held in Chicago, Illinois on 8–12 November 2010. The meeting program was made up of over 100 review, tutorial, and invited oral presentations, and a significant fraction of these speakers prepared manuscripts which were peer-reviewed and are contained in this Special Issue.

Each year, the annual meeting of the APS Division of Plasma Physics (DPP) brings together a broad representation of the many active subfields of plasma physics and enjoys an audience that is equally diverse. The meeting was well attended and largely went as planned despite the interventions of hurricane Sandy which caused the city of Providence to shut-down during the first day of the conference. The meeting began on Monday morning with a review of the physics of cosmic rays, 2012 being the 100th year since their discovery, which illustrated the central importance of plasma physics to astrophysical problems. Subsequent reviews covered the importance of tokamak plasma boundaries, progress towards ignition on the National Ignition Facility (NIF), and magnetized plasma turbulence. The Maxwell prize address, by Professor Liu Chen, covered the field of nonlinear Alfven wave physics. Tutorial lectures were presented on the verification of gyrokinetics, new capabilities in laboratory astrophysics, magnetic flux compression, and tokamak plasma start-up.

The year 2008 marked the 50th Anniversary of the Division of Plasma Physics (DPP) of the American Physical Society. This Special Issue presents many of the Review, Tutorial, and Invited papers that were presented at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the DPP, which was held 17–21 November, in Dallas, Texas. We are very pleased that many of the speakers have submitted an archival-quality version of their presentation for peer review and publication in Physics of Plasmas.
