Based on the reversed Cherenkov radiation excited in metamaterials, a novel S-band reversed Cherenkov radiation amplifier (RCRA) with two output ports is proposed in this paper. Its metamaterial slow-wave structure (MSWS) consists of a hollow circular waveguide periodically loaded with all-metal double-ridge complementary electric split-ring resonators (CeSRRs). The CeSRR exhibits subwavelength and strong resonance characteristics, which lead to miniaturization and high interaction impedance of the MSWS. The period of the MSWS is optimized using the phase velocity jump technique to further increase the output power and electronic efficiency. The simulation results demonstrate that when the microwave signal of 7.8 W at 2.286 GHz is inputted at port 2, the output power at port 1 is 307 W, and the saturated output power and saturated gain at port 3 are 5.48 kW and 28.47 dB, respectively. Notably, the total electronic efficiency of the RCRA is predicted as 33.84%. The RCRA features high electronic efficiency and miniaturization and may meet special application scenarios that require two output microwave signals at the same frequency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the particle-in-cell simulation study of this paper, it is found that the high-power terahertz radiation at twice the plasma frequency can be generated by the interaction between a weakly relativistic, large-radius, focused electron beam and an overdense plasma. The terahertz radiation is emitted from a multi-filament structure in the electron beam, which is caused by the coupling of the longitudinal two-stream instability and the transverse filamentation instability. The analysis of the k space of the plasma waves indicates that the radiation can be explained by the mode coupling among a forward oblique mode, a backward oblique mode, and a second harmonic radiation mode. The influences of the beam Lorentz factor and plasma density on the radiation power, efficiency, and coherence are also investigated. The present results not only contribute to the development of novel megawatt-level narrowband terahertz radiation sources, but also propose a potential terahertz radiation mechanism for the fundamental research of the beam-plasma system. It is found that the plasma waves driven by an electron beam rotating in a magnetized overdense plasma can be converted into terahertz electromagnetic radiation by new mechanisms. According to the particle-in-cell simulation results, the radiation modes include a dominant extraordinary (X) mode at twice the plasma frequency 2 f p and a subordinate X mode at f p . The 2 f p radiation can be generated by the coupling of a beam mode and a scattered upper-hybrid (UH) mode, or by the coupling of a beam mode and a right-handed X mode. Here, the beam mode can be a UH mode or a left-handed X mode driven by the beam under the Cherenkov condition, and the right-handed X mode can be induced by high-order electron cyclotron maser instability. The f p radiation is the right- or left-handed fundamental X mode escaping from the plasma boundary. This study also shows that the breakdown of beam modulation is responsible for the radiation attenuation. In this paper, a stacked dual beam electron gun and the associated electron optical system are proposed. The stacked dual beam electron gun includes two compact focusing electrodes which help to achieve dual sheet beams. As an application of this dual beam electron gun, a 340 GHz integrated dual beam traveling wave tube (TWT) based on the staggered dual vane slow-wave structure (SWS) is also put forward. In order to reduce the length of the TWT, a novel input/output coupler is introduced. The overall transmission characteristics of the SWS structure together with the input/output couplers show a wide bandwidth covering a frequency range of 306 GHz to 360 GHz. Based on the parameters obtained for the integrated TWT, a stacked dual-beam electron gun with dual focusing electrodes is designed to achieve a beam current of 43 mA, a beam voltage of 21.4 kV, and a cross-sectional size of each beam of 0.3 mm × 0.08 mm. A uniform magnetic field of 0.52 T is utilized to focus the dual electron beams, and a beam transmission efficiency of 97.1% is achieved over a length of 50 mm. Finally, particle in cell simulation results show that the integrated dual-beam TWT can generate an output power of 5 W over the frequency range of 315 GHz to 350 GHz, with the maximum output power of 24.5 W at 330 GHz. Variable-width technology applied to the folded waveguide traveling wave tube (FW-TWT) is proposed in this paper to suppress the lower band-edge oscillation and to expand the operating bandwidth when the operating frequency shifts toward the lower band for obtaining larger output power. Changes in the width of the slow wave structure (SWS) determine the variation of the lower-cutoff-frequency (LCF), which makes the LCF's distribution a frequency range rather than a specific frequency-point. The lower band-edge oscillation will not be focused on a special position but distributed in a frequency-band range in which multiple oscillation modes compete with each other near the LCF. The lower band-edge oscillation can be suppressed by mode competition to some extent. In addition, the width variation of SWS also results in the phase-velocity variation, and thus, the operating bandwidth of FW-TWT can be further improved by the optimized design of variable-width-SWS parameters. Beam-wave interaction simulations predicted that power and bandwidth improvements have been achieved without the lower band-edge oscillation. Meanwhile, four solutions are given for further certifying the effectiveness of the variable-width method in lower band-edge oscillation suppression and bandwidth widening. An output power level of over 350 W in a frequency range of 85–90 GHz (5 GHz) is obtained, with a maximum power of ∼648 W and an electron efficiency of ∼12.1% at 88 GHz with a beam current of 260 mA and a beam voltage of 20.5 kV. In this paper, an oversized coaxial relativistic extended interaction oscillator (OCREIO) with gigawatt-level output at the Ka-band is proposed. We adopt a four-gap buncher cavity and a three-gap output cavity to increase the power capability and improve the electronic efficiency of the OCREIO. The beam-loading conductance for each mode existing in the buncher cavity is derived based on a small-signal theory. The beam-wave interaction and power capability for the 2π/3 and π modes exciting in the buncher cavity are analyzed. The operation mode 2π/3 is chosen by considering the beam-loading conductance and power capability. In addition, an improved method is proposed to mitigate the electric field intensity of the buncher cavity so as to moderate velocity modulation. The weak velocity modulation offers enough distance to make density modulation, thereby obtaining a relatively high fundamental harmonic current amplitude. Our study on the device performance of the proposed OCREIO, using the particle-in-cell simulation code CHIPIC, predicts an output power of 922.7 MW and a high electronic efficiency of 32.9% at 30.5 GHz, as well as the relatively less time of frequency-lock of self-oscillation <20 ns. A dual-beam planar dielectric-rod-support uniform metallic meander line slow-wave structure (SWS) for high-efficiency Ka-band traveling wave tube (TWT) is proposed in this paper. Two dielectric rods are placed on both sides of metallic meander line to support it, instead of the dielectric substrate in the conventional microstrip meander line. Furthermore, it can not only solve the problem of the electron charge accumulation on microstrip but also leads to a bigger interaction impedance. According to particle-in-cell simulation results, a dual-sheet-beam planar dielectric-rod-support uniform metallic meander line TWT can get an output power of 330.2 W at 38 GHz under the case of 10.6 kV beam voltage and 0.2 A beam current. The corresponding maximum gain and electron efficiency are 23.4 dB and 15.5%, respectively, where the length of whole SWS is only 20 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, an extended interaction oversized coaxial relativistic klystron amplifier (EIOC-RKA) with Gigawatt-level output at Ka band is proposed. We introduce the oversized coaxial and multi-gap resonant cavities to increase the power capacity and investigate a non-uniform extended interaction output cavity to improve the electronic efficiency of the EIOC-RKA. We develop a high order mode gap in the input and output cavities to easily design and fabricate the input and output couplers. Meanwhile, we design the EIOC-RKA by using the particle-in-cell simulation. In the simulations, we use an electron beam with a current of 6 kA and a voltage of 525 kV, which is focused by a low focusing magnetic flux intensity of 0.5 T. The simulation results demonstrate that the saturated output power is 1.17 GW, the electronic efficiency is 37.1%, and the saturated gain is 57 dB at 30 GHz. The self-oscillation is suppressed by adopting the absorbing materials. The proposed EIOC-RKA has plenty of advantages such as large power capacity, high electronic efficiency, low focusing magnetic, high gain, and simple structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
