Abstract

The updated results of the precise measurements of the processes e + e − → ρ → π + π − , e + e − → ω → π + π − π 0 and e + e − → φ → K 0 L K 0 S performed by the CMD-2 Collaboration are presented. The update appeared necessary due to an overestimate of the integrated luminosity in previous analyses.

Abstract

The cross section of the process e + e − → ωπ 0 → π 0 π 0 γ has been measured in the c.m. energy range 920–1380 MeV with the CMD-2 detector. Its energy dependence is well described by the interference of the ρ (770) and ρ (1450) mesons decaying to ωπ 0 . Upper limits for the cross sections of the direct processes e + e − → π 0 π 0 γ , ηπ 0 γ have been set.

Abstract

Using 15.1 pb −1 of data collected by CMD-2 in the φ -meson energy range, the branching ratios of the following conversion decays have been measured: B ( φ → ηe + e − )=(1.14±0.10±0.06)×10 −4 , B ( η → e + e − γ )=(7.10±0.64±0.46)×10 −3 , B ( η → π + π − e + e − )=(3.7 +2.5 −1.8 ±0.3)×10 −4 . The upper limits for the following rare conversion decays have been obtained at the 90% confidence level: B ( φ → ημ + μ − ) −6 , B ( η → e + e − e + e − ) −5 .

Abstract

Using 11.6 pb −1 of data collected in the energy range 0.864-1.06 GeV by CMD-2 at VEPP-2M, the rare decay mode φ → η ′ γ was observed via the decay chain η ′→ π + π − η , η → π + π − π 0 or η → π + π − γ . The following branching ratio was obtained: Br(φ→η′γ)= 4.9 +2.2 −1.8 ±0.6 ×10 −5 .

Abstract

Using 11.6 pb −1 of data collected in the energy range 0.984–1.06GeV by CMD-2 at VEPP-2M, the cross section of the reaction e + e − →π + π − π + π − hasbeen studied. For the firsttime an interference patternwas observed in the energy dependence of the cross section near theφ meson. The branching ratio of the φ → π + π − π + π − decay doublesuppressed by the G-parity and OZI rule is measuredBr(φ → π + π − π + π − ) = (3.93 ±1.74 ±2.14) ·10 −6 .The upper limits have been placed for the decays φ → π + π − π + π − π 0 and φ → ηπ + π − Br(φ → π + π − π + π − π 0 ) < 4.6 ·10 −6 90%CL,Br(φ → ηπ + π − ) < 1.8 ·10 −5 90%CL. 1 Introduction Production of four pions in e + e − annihilation is now well studied in the c.m.energy range 1.05 to 2.5 GeV (see [ 1] and references therein). Abstract

A new measurement of the rare decay φ → η ′ γ performed with the CMD-2 detector at the VEPP-2M collider in Novosibirsk is described. Of the data sample corresponding to the integrated luminosity of 14.5 pb −1 , twenty one events have been selected in the mode η ′→ π + π − η , η → γγ . The following branching ratio was obtained: B( φ → η ′ γ )=(8.2 +2.1 −1.9 ±1.1)·10 −5 .

Abstract

Using 3.07 pb −1 of data collected in the energy range 0.60–0.97 GeV by CMD-2, about 150 events of the process e + e − → π + π − π + π − have been selected. The energy dependence of the cross section agrees with the assumption of the a 1 (1260) π intermediate state which is dominant above 1 GeV. For the first time π + π − π + π − events are observed at the ρ meson energy. Under the assumption that all these events come from the ρ meson decay, the value of the cross section at the ρ meson peak corresponds to the following decay width: Γ(ρ 0 →π + π − π + π − )=(2.8±1.4±0.5) keV or to the branching ratio B(ρ 0 →π + π − π + π − )=(1.8±0.9±0.3)·10 −5 .

Abstract

Using the 1.9 pb −1 of data collected with the CMD-2 detector at VEPP-2M the decay mode φ→ηγ, η→π+π−π0 has been studied. The obtained branching ratio is B(φ→ηγ)=(1.18±0.03±0.06)%.

Abstract

A study of the φ → π + π − π 0 decay mode has been performed using a data sample of about 2.0 million φ decays collected by the CMD-2 detector at VEPP-2M collider in Novosibirsk. The following parameters of the φ -meson have been measured: Br ( φ → π + π − π 0 )=0.145±0.009±0.003 and δ φ − ω =162±17°. The analysis of the Dalitz plot showed the dominance of the φ → ρπ intermediate mechanism, the limits for the ratio of the direct amplitude of φ →3 π to that of φ → ρπ are −0.16 a 1 φ → π + π − η and direct φ → ργγ have been found for the first time: Br ( φ → π + π − η ) −4 and Br ( φ → ργγ ) −4 at 90% C.L.

Abstract

We present a measurement of semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for positively and negatively charged hadrons from deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons on polarised protons and deuterons in the range $0.003$1 GeV$^2$. Compared to our previous publication on this subject, with the new data the statistical errors have been reduced by nearly a factor of two. From these asymmetries and our inclusive spin asymmetries we determine the polarised quark distributions of valence quarks and non-strange sea quarks at $Q^2$=10 GeV$^2$. The polarised $u$ valence quark distribution, $\Delta u_v(x)$, is positive and the polarisation increases with $x$. The polarised $d$ valence quark distribution, $\Delta d_v(x)$, is negative and the non-strange sea distribution, $\Delta \bar q(x)$, is consistent with zero over the measured range of $x$. We find for the first moments $\int_0^1 \Delta u_v(x) dx = 0.77 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.08$, $\int_0^1 \Delta d_v(x) dx = -0.52 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.09$ and $\int_0^1 \Delta \bar q(x) dx= 0.01 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.03$, where we assumed $\Delta \bar u(x) = \Delta \bar d(x)$. Abstract

A search for φ radiative decays has been performed using a data sample of about 2.0 million φ decays collected by the CMD-2 detector at VEPP-2M collider in Novosibirsk. From the selected e + e − → π + π − γ events the following results were obtained: B( φ → f 0 (980) γ ) −4 for destructive and B( φ → f 0 (980) γ ) −4 for constructive interference with the Bremsstrahlung process respectively, B( φ → γ → π + π − γ ) −5 for E γ >20 MeV, B( φ → ργ ) −4 . From the selected e + e − → μ + μ − γ events B( φ → μ + μ − γ )=(2.3±1.0)×10 −5 has been obtained for E γ >20 MeV. The upper limit on the P,CP-violating decay η → π + π − has also been placed: B( η → π + π − ) −4 . All upper limits are at 90% C.L.

Abstract

The decay φ → η ′ γ has been observed by the CMD-2 detector at the e + e − collider VEPP-2M at Novosibirsk. Of 5.5 million produced φ 's, six events of the φ → η ′ γ decay were selected with the expected background less than one event. The corresponding branching ratio is B( φ → η ′ γ )=1.2 +0.7 −0.5 ·10 −4 . It is the first observation of this radiative decay.

Abstract

We present a new measurement of the virtual photon proton asymmetry $A_1^{\rm p}$ from deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons on polarized protons in the kinematic range $0.0008 < x < 0.7$ and $0.2 < Q^{2} < 100$ GeV$^{2}$. With this, the statistical uncertainty of our measurement has improved by a factor of $2$ compared to our previous measurements. The spin-dependent structure function $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ is determined for the data with $Q^{2} > 1$ GeV$^{2}$. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to determine $g_1^{\rm p}(x)$ at a constant $Q^2$. At $Q^{2} = 10$ GeV$^{2}$ we find, in the measured range, $\int_{0.003}^{0.7} g_{1}^{\rm p}(x){\rm d}x = 0.139 \pm 0.006~({\rm stat})\pm 0.008~({\rm syst)} \pm 0.006~({\rm evol})$. The value of the first moment $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm p} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{\rm p}(x){\rm d}x$ of $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ depends on the approach used to describe the behaviour of $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ at low $x$. We find that the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule is violated. With our published result for $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm d}$ we confirm the Bjorken sum rule with an accuracy of $\approx 15\%$ at the one standard deviation level.

Abstract

We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function $g_{1}^{\rm d}$ of the deuteron from deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarized muons on polarized deuterons. The results are combined with our previous measurements of $g_{1}^{\rm d}$. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to compute $g_{1}^{\rm d}(x)$ at a constant $Q^{2}$. At $Q^{2} = 10$ GeV$^{2}$, we obtain a first moment $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm d} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{\rm d}{\rm d}x = 0.041 \pm 0.008$, a flavour-singlet axial charge of the nucleon $a_{0} = 0.30 \pm 0.08$, and an axial charge of the strange quark $a_{s} = -0.09 \pm 0.03$. Using our earlier determination of $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm p}$, we obtain $\Gamma_1^{\rm p} - \Gamma_1^{\rm n} = 0.183 \pm 0.035$ at $Q^2 = 10\,\mbox{GeV}^2$. This result is in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule which predicts $\Gamma_1^{\rm p} - \Gamma_1^{\rm n} = 0.186 \pm 0.002$ at the same $Q^2$.

Abstract

Results of the measurement of the φ meson parameters with the general purpose detector CMD-2 at the upgraded e + e − collider VEPP-2M at Novosibirsk are presented. This is the first measurement of the four major φ decay modes in a single e + e − experiment. The results based on about 55,600 identified hadronic events are consistent with previous measurements, and have precision comparable to the current world average.

Abstract

Longitudinal and transverse momentum spectra of final state hadrons produced in deep-inelastic muon-deuterium scattering at incident muon energy of 490 GeV have been measured up to a hadronic center of mass energy of 30 GeV. The longitudinal distributions agree well with data from earlier muon-nucleon scattering experiments; these distributions tend to increase in steepness as the center of mass energy increases. Comparisons with e + e − data at comparable center of mass energies indicate slight differences. The transverse momentum distributions show an increase in mean p T 2 with an increase in the center of mass energy.

Abstract

A recent EMC experiment has found that the integral of the spin-dependent structure function g1 of the proton violates the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule. It is shown here that this result can be strengthened when combined with older data from SLAC.

Abstract

The cross section of the process e+e- -> pi+pi- has been measured using about 114000 events collected by the CMD-2 detector at the VEPP-2M e+e- collider in the center-of-mass energy range from 0.61 to 0.96 GeV. Results of the pion form factor determination with a 0.6% systematic uncertainty are presented. Abstract

The photoproduced K - yield from hydrogen has been studied at a laboratory angle of 15° in a further search for strangeness S = +1 baryon states. The upper limit for differential cross sections for resonant states is about 4 nb/sr.
