Abstract

Using the CLEO detector, we present a measurement of the mass of the charged charmed strange baryon Ξ+c and its neutral counterpart the Ξ0c. The Ξ+c is observed through its decay to Ξ-π+π+, and its mass is measured to be (2467±3±4) MeV. The isospin mass splitting of the Ξc system is found to be M(Ξ+c)-M(Ξ0c)=(-5±4±1)MeV. © 1989.

Abstract

We have measured upper limits on branching fractions for rare exclusive decays of B mesons arising from one-loop diagrams in the standard model of electroweak interactions. We also obtain an upper limit for the lepton-number-violating decay B0→μ±e∓. © 1989.

Abstract

Correlations among hadrons with the same electric charge produced in Z0decays are studied using the high statistics data collected from 1991 through 1995 with the OPAL detector at LEP. Normalized factorial cumulants up to fourth order are used to measure genuine particle correlations as a function of the size of phase space domains in rapidity, azimuthal angle and transverse momentum. Both all-charge and like-sign particle combinations show strong positive genuine correlations. One-dimensional cumulants initially increase rapidly with decreasing size of the phase space cells but saturate quickly. In contrast, cumulants in two- and three-dimensional domains continue to increase. The strong rise of the cumulants for all-charge multiplets is increasingly driven by that of like-sign multiplets. This points to the likely influence of Bose–Einstein correlations. Some of the recently proposed algorithms to simulate Bose–Einstein effects, implemented in the Monte Carlo model Pythia, are found to reproduce reasonably well the measured second- and higher-order correlations between particles with the same charge as well as those in all-charge particle multiplets.

Abstract

A search for single top quark production via flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) was performed with data collected by the OPAL detector at the e+e−collider LEP. Approximately 600 pb−1of data collected at s=189–209 GeV were used to search for the FCNC process e+e−→tc(u)→bWc(u). This analysis is sensitive to the leptonic and the hadronic decay modes of the W boson. No evidence for a FCNC process is observed. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the single top production cross-section as a function of the centre-of-mass energy are derived. Limits on the anomalous coupling parameters κγand κZare determined from these results.

Abstract

The inclusive branching ratio for the process b→τ−ν̄τXhas been measured using hadronic Z decays collected by the OPAL experiment at LEP in the years 1992–2000. The result is: BR(b→τ−ν̄τX)=(2.78±0.18±0.51)%.This measurement is consistent with the Standard Model expectation and puts a constraint of tanβ/MH±<0.53 GeV−1at the 95% confidence level on Type II Two Higgs Doublet Models.

Abstract

We search for lepton flavour violating events (eμ, eτand μτ) that could be directly produced in e+e−annihilations, using the full available data sample collected with the OPAL detector at centre-of-mass energies between 189 GeV and 209 GeV. In general, the Standard Model expectations describe the data well for all the channels and at each s.A single eμevent is observed where according to our Monte Carlo simulations only 0.019 events are expected from Standard Model processes. We obtain the first limits on the cross-sections σ(e+e−→eμ, eτand μτ) as a function of sat LEP2 energies.

Abstract

Using about 3.9 million hadronic Z decays from e+e−collisions recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies s≈MZ, the branching ratio for the decay D−s→τ−ν̄τhas been measured to be BR(D−s→τ−ν̄τ)=(7.0±2.1(stat)±2.0(syst))%.This result can be used to derive the decay constant of the D−smeson: fDs=(286±44(stat)±41(syst))MeV.

Abstract

Data on muon pair production obtained by the OPAL Collaboration at centre of mass energies near the Z peak are analysed. Small angular mismatches between the directions of the two muons are used to assess the effects of initial state photon radiation and initial-final-state radiation interference on the forward–backward asymmetry of muon pairs. The dependence of the asymmetry on the invariant mass of the pair is measured in a model-independent way. Effective vector and axial-vector couplings of the Z boson are determined and compared to the Standard Model expectations.

Abstract

The spin composition of ΛΛ, ΛΛ and ΛΛpairs at low invariant mass values has been measured for the first time in multihadronic Z0decays with the OPAL detector at LEP. No single spin state has been observed in the ΛΛsample, verifying that the low mass enhancement in this sample, attributed to local baryon number compensation, is not a resonance state. The fraction of the spin 1 contribution to the ΛΛpairs was found to be consistent with the value 0.75, as expected from a statistical spin mixture. This may be the net effect of many different QCD processes which contribute to the hyperon anti-hyperon pair production. The spin composition of the identical ΛΛ and ΛΛpairs, well above threshold, is found to be similar to that of the ΛΛsample. A ΛΛ emitter dimension is estimated from the data assuming the onset of the Pauli exclusion principle near threshold.

Abstract

Evidence is presented for the production of prompt Jψmesons (not originating in b-hadron decays) in hadronic Z0decays. Using a sample of 3.6 million hadronic events, 24 prompt Jψcandidates are identified from their decays into e+e−and μ+μ−pairs. The background is estimated to be 10.2 ± 2.0 events. The following branching ratio for prompt Jψproduction is obtained: Br(Z0→ promptJψ+ X) = (1.9 +- 0.7 ± 0.5 ± 0.5) · 10−4, where the first error is statistical, the second systematic and the third error accounts for uncertainties in the prompt Jψproduction mechanism.

Abstract

The average lifetime of baryons containing a b quark has been measured with the OPAL detector using data collected between 1990 and 1992. Semileptonically decaying b-flavoured baryons which produce a Λ are identified through the charge correlation of the λ and lepton. The decay point of the baryon is estimated by the λ-lepton vertex, and the observed distribution of decay lengths is fitted to determine the average lifetime. In the data sample consisting of 261 right-sign and 104 wrong-sign λ-lepton charge combinations, the average b baryon lifetime is found to be τ= 1.05+0.23-0.20±0.08 ps, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

Abstract

We report on a measurement of the mass of the Z0boson, its total width, and its partial decay widths into hadrons and leptons. On the basis of 25 801 hadronic decays and 1999 decays into electrons, muons or taus, selected over eleven energy points between 88.28 GeV and 95.04 GeV, we obtain from a combined fit to hadrons and leptons a mass of Mz= 91.154 ± 0.021 (exp) ± 0.030 (LEP) GeV, and a total width of Γz= 2.536 ± 0.045 GeV. The errors on Mzhave been separated into the experimental error and the uncertainty due to the LEP beam energy. The measured leptonic partial widths are Γee= 81.2 ± 2.6 MeV, Γμμ= 82.6 ± 5.8 MeV, and Γττ= 85.7 ± 7.1 MeV, consistent with lepton universality. From a fit assuming lepton universality we obtain Γℓ+ℓ−= 81.9 ± 2.0 MeV. The hadronic partial width is Γhad= 1838 ± 46 MeV. From the measured total and partial widths a model independent value for the invisible width is calculated to be Γinv= 453 ± 44 MeV. The errors quoted include both the statistical and the systematic uncertainties.
