Abstract

We present the first measurement of photoproduction of J/psi and of two-photon production of high-mass e(+)e(-) pairs in electromagnetic (or ultra-peripheral) nucleus-nucleus interactions, using Au + Au data at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The events are tagged with forward neutrons emitted following Coulomb excitation of one or both Au* nuclei. The event sample consists of 28 events with m(e+e-) > 2 GeV/c(2) with zero like-sign background. The measured cross sections at midrapidity of d sigma/dy (J/psi + Xn, y = 0) = 76 +/- 33 (stat) +/- 11 (syst) pb and d(2)sigma /dm dy (e(+) e(-) + Xn, y = 0) = 86 +/- 23(stat) +/- 16(syst) mu b/ (GeV/c(2)) for m(e+e-) epsilon vertical bar 2.0, 2.8 vertical bar GeV/c(2) have been compared and found to be consistent with models for photoproduction of J/psi and QED based calculations of two-photon production of e(+)e(-) pairs. Abstract

PHENIX has measured the electron-positron pair mass spectrum from 0 to 8 GeV/c(2) in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV. The contributions from light meson decays to e(+)e(-) pairs have been determined based on measurements of hadron production cross sections by PHENIX. Within the systematic uncertainty of similar to 20% they account for all e(+)e(-) pairs in the mass region below similar to 1 GeV/c(2). The e(+)e(-) pair yield remaining after subtracting these contributions is dominated by semileptonic decays of charmed hadrons correlated through flavor conservation. Using the spectral shape predicted by PYTHIA, we estimate the charm production cross section to be 544 +/- 39(stat) +/- 142(syst) +/- 200(model) pb. which is consistent with QCD calculations and measurements of single leptons by PHENIX. Abstract

Correlations between p and (p) over bar at transverse momenta typical of enhanced baryon production in Au + Au collisions are reported. The PHENIX experiment has measured same and opposite sign baryon pairs in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Correlated production of p and p with the trigger particle from the range 2.5 < p(T) < 4.0 GeV/c and the associated particle with 1.8 < p(T) < 2.5 GeV/c is observed to be nearly independent of the centrality of the collisions. Same sign pairs show no correlation at any centrality. The conditional yield of mesons triggered by baryons (and anti-baryons) and mesons in the same p(T) range rises with increasing centrality, except for the most central collisions, where baryons show a significantly smaller number of associated mesons. These data are consistent with a picture in which hard scattered partons produce correlated p and (p) over bar in the p(T) region of the baryon excess. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

4. Kaon production and multi-body collisions in dense nuclear matter

Abstract

The spectra and yields of K + and K − production in Au+Au reactions at 11.6 A GeV are compared to the predictions of a hadronic transport model, RQMD. This not only provides a quantitative test for the model but also explores the possibility of multi-body hadronic collisions within dense matter. At nuclear densities three to four times normal matter density the estimated mean-free path is smaller than the size of a typical hadron. Each hadron is likely to suffer multiple collisions within the duration of any one collision. The effects of these multi-body collisions in heavy-ion reactions are discussed, in particular the possibility that multi-body collisions may increase the absorption of particles, e.g. K − .

Abstract

High energy photons ( E γ ⩾30 MeV) have been measured in coincidence with light particles observed in a multidetector array for the 40 Ar+ 51 V system at a bombarding energy of E A =65 MeV . Double differential cross sections were obtained as a function of the midrapidity charge representation of the centrality of the collision. The inverse slope parameter increases with centrality more strongly than predicted by a BUU model.

Abstract

The one-neutron transfer reaction induced by 25, 35 and 50 MeV/nucleon 12 C beams on a 12 C target has been studied. The observed angular distributions for the 13 C g.s - 11 C g.s. final state agree in shape and magnitude with predictions of the exact finite- range distorted wave Born approximation. Above roughly 30 MeV/nucleon, the angel integrated cross section falls off with an approximately exponential slope in accordance with the expectations of the reaction dynamics at high bombarding energies.

7. Symmetric fission of 24Mg following inelastic scattering

Abstract

Symmetric fission into two 12 C nuclei has been observed from states at high excitation energy in 24 Mg excited in inelastic scattering. Fission to the 10 B+ 4 N channel has also been observed and indirect evidence for the 16 O+ 8 Be channel noted. The same experiment also reveals fission into 16 O+ 12 C from states in 28 Si populated by alpha-particle pickup onto the 24 Mg projectile. The correlation of the states in 24 Mg observed in this experiment with those previously observed in 12 C+ 12 C scattering is discussed.
