We study the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the magnetotransport properties of zirconium pentatelluride. The magnitude of resistivity anomaly gets enhanced with increasing pressure, but the transition temperature T* is insensitive to it up to 2.5 GPa. In the case of H∥b, the quasilinear magnetoresistance decreases drastically from 3300% (9 T) at ambient pressure to 230% (9 T) at 2.5 GPa. Besides, the change of the quantum oscillation phase from topological nontrivial to trivial is revealed around 2 GPa. Both demonstrate that the pressure breaks the accidental Dirac node in ZrTe5. For H∥c, in contrast, subtle changes can be seen in the magnetoresistance and quantum oscillations. In the presence of pressure, ZrTe5 evolves from a highly anisotropic to a nearly isotropic electronic system, which accompanies the disruption of the accidental Dirac semimetal state. It supports the assumption that ZrTe5 is a semi-3D Dirac system with linear dispersion along two directions and a quadratic one along the third. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Knill-Laflamme conditions distinguish exact quantum error correction codes, and they have played a critical role in the discovery of state-of-the-art codes. However, the family of exact codes is a very restrictive one and does not necessarily contain the best-performing codes. Therefore, it is desirable to develop a generalized and quantitative performance metric. In this Letter, we derive the near-optimal channel fidelity, a concise and optimization-free metric for arbitrary codes and noise. The metric provides a narrow two-sided bound to the optimal code performance, and it can be evaluated with exactly the same input required by the Knill-Laflamme conditions. We demonstrate the numerical advantage of the near-optimal channel fidelity through multiple qubit code and oscillator code examples. Compared to conventional optimization-based approaches, the reduced computational cost enables us to simulate systems with previously inaccessible sizes, such as oscillators encoding hundreds of average excitations. Moreover, we analytically derive the near-optimal performance for the thermodynamic code and the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill code. In particular, the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill code's performance under excitation loss improves monotonically with its energy and converges to an asymptotic limit at infinite energy, which is distinct from other oscillator codes.

We report optical trapping of laser-cooled molecules at sufficient density to observe molecule-molecule collisions for the first time in a bulk gas. SrF molecules from a red-detuned magneto-optical trap (MOT) are compressed and cooled in a blue-detuned MOT. Roughly 30% of these molecules are loaded into an optical dipole trap with peak number density n_{0}≈3×10^{10}  cm^{-3} and temperature T≈40  μK. We observe two-body loss with rate coefficient β=2.7_{-0.8}^{+1.2}×10^{-10}  cm^{3} s^{-1}. Achieving this density and temperature opens a path to evaporative cooling towards quantum degeneracy of laser-cooled molecules.

Finding tunable van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets that operate at above room temperature is an important research focus in physics and materials science. Most vdW magnets are only intrinsically magnetic far below room temperature and magnetism with square-shaped hysteresis at room temperature has yet to be observed. Here, we report magnetism in a quasi-2D magnet Cr_{1.2}Te_{2} observed at room temperature (290 K). This magnetism was tuned via a protonic gate with an electron doping concentration up to 3.8×10^{21}  cm^{-3}. We observed nonmonotonic evolutions in both coercivity and anomalous Hall resistivity. Under increased electron doping, the coercivities and anomalous Hall effects (AHEs) vanished, indicating a doping-induced magnetic phase transition. This occurred up to room temperature. DFT calculations showed the formation of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase caused by the intercalation of protons which induced significant electron doping in the Cr_{1.2}Te_{2}. The tunability of the magnetic properties and phase in room temperature magnetic vdW Cr_{1.2}Te_{2} is a significant step towards practical spintronic devices.

A unique feature of the complex band structures of moiré materials is the presence of minivalleys, their hybridization, and scattering between them. Here, we investigate magnetotransport oscillations caused by scattering between minivalleys-a phenomenon analogous to magnetointersubband oscillations-in a twisted double bilayer graphene sample with a twist angle of 1.94°. We study and discuss the potential scattering mechanisms and find an electron-phonon mechanism and valley conserving scattering to be likely. Finally, we discuss the relevance of our findings for different materials and twist angles.

Control over minivalley polarization and interlayer coupling is demonstrated in double bilayer graphene twisted with an angle of 2.37°. This intermediate angle is small enough for the minibands to form and large enough such that the charge carrier gases in the layers can be tuned independently. Using a dual-gated geometry we identify and control all possible combinations of minivalley polarization via the population of the two bilayers. An applied displacement field opens a band gap in either of the two bilayers, allowing us to even obtain full minivalley polarization. In addition, the carriers, formerly separated by their minivalley character, are mixed by tuning through a Lifshitz transition, where the Fermi surface topology changes. The high degree of control over the minivalley character of the bulk charge transport in twisted double bilayer graphene offers new opportunities for realizing valleytronics devices such as valley valves, filters, and logic gates.

The weak interlayer coupling in van der Waals (vdW) magnets has confined their application to two dimensional (2D) spintronic devices. Here, we demonstrate that the interlayer coupling in a vdW magnet Fe_{3}GeTe_{2} (FGT) can be largely modulated by a protonic gate. With the increase of the protons intercalated among vdW layers, interlayer magnetic coupling increases. Because of the existence of antiferromagnetic layers in FGT nanoflakes, the increasing interlayer magnetic coupling induces exchange bias in protonated FGT nanoflakes. Most strikingly, a rarely seen zero-field cooled (ZFC) exchange bias with very large values (maximally up to 1.2 kOe) has been observed when higher positive voltages (V_{g}≥4.36  V) are applied to the protonic gate, which clearly demonstrates that a strong interlayer coupling is realized by proton intercalation. Such strong interlayer coupling will enable a wider range of applications for vdW magnets.

While pyrite-type PtBi_{2} with a face-centered cubic structure has been predicted to be a three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal, experimental study of its physical properties remains absent. Here we report the angular-dependent magnetoresistance measurements of a PtBi_{2} single crystal under high magnetic fields. We observed extremely large unsaturated magnetoresistance (XMR) up to (11.2×10^{6})% at T=1.8  K in a magnetic field of 33 T, which is comparable to the previously reported Dirac materials, such as WTe_{2}, LaSb, and NbP. The crystals exhibit an ultrahigh mobility and significant Shubnikov-de Hass quantum oscillations with a nontrivial Berry phase. The analysis of Hall resistivity indicates that the XMR can be ascribed to the nearly compensated electron and hole. Our experimental results associated with the ab initio calculations suggest that pyrite PtBi_{2} is a topological semimetal candidate that might provide a platform for exploring topological materials with XMR in noble metal alloys.

We report a novel superresolution microscopy approach for imaging fluorescence samples. The reported approach, termed virtual k-space modulation optical microscopy (VIKMOM), is able to improve the lateral resolution by a factor of 2, reduce the background level, improve the optical sectioning effect and correct for unknown optical aberrations. In the acquisition process of VIKMOM, we used a scanning confocal microscope setup with a 2D detector array to capture sample information at each scanned x-y position. In the recovery process of VIKMOM, we first modulated the captured data by virtual k-space coding and then employed a ptychography-inspired procedure to recover the sample information and correct for unknown optical aberrations. We demonstrated the performance of the reported approach by imaging fluorescent beads, fixed bovine pulmonary artery endothelial (BPAE) cells, and living human astrocytes (HA). As the VIKMOM approach is fully compatible with conventional confocal microscope setups, it may provide a turn-key solution for imaging biological samples with ∼100  nm lateral resolution, in two or three dimensions, with improved optical sectioning capabilities and aberration correcting.

We report systematic measurements of ac susceptibility, nuclear-quadrupole-resonance spectrum, and nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation time (T1) on the pressure (P)-induced heavy-fermion superconductor CeRhIn5. The temperature (T) dependence of 1/T(1) at P=1.6 GPa has revealed that antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity (SC) coexist microscopically, exhibiting the respective transition at T(N)=2.8 K and T(MF)(c)=0.9 K. It is demonstrated that SC does not yield any trace of gap opening in low-lying excitations below T(onset)(c)=2 K, but T(MF)(c)=0.9 K, followed by a T(1)T=const law. These results point to the unconventional characteristics of SC coexisting with AFM. We highlight that both of the results deserve theoretical work on the gapless nature in the low-lying excitation spectrum due to the coexistence of AFM and SC and the lack of the mean-field regime below T(onset)(c)=2 K.

We report the spin Knight shift (K(s)) and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) in the vortex state as a function of magnetic field (H) up to 28 T in the high-Tc superconductor TlSr2CaCu2O6.8 (Tc = 68 K). At low temperatures well below Tc, both K(s) and 1/T1 measured around the middle point between the two nearest vortices (saddle point) increase substantially with increasing field, which indicate that the quasiparticle states with an ungapped spectrum are extended outside the vortex cores in a d-wave superconductor. The density of states (DOS) around the saddle point is found to be kappaN(0)square root[H/H(c2)], with kappa = 0.5-0.7 and N0 being the normal-state DOS.

We report measurements of the 115In nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ( 1/T1) between T = 0.09 and 100 K in the new heavy fermion (HF) compound CeIrIn5. At 0.4 < or = T< or = 100 K, 1/T1 is strongly T-dependent, which indicates that CeIrIn5 is much more itinerant than known Ce-based HFs. We find that 1/T1T, subtracting that for LaIrIn5, follows a (1 / T+straight theta)3/4 variation with straight theta = 8 K. We argue that this novel feature points to anisotropic, due to a layered crystal structure, spin fluctuations near a magnetic ordering. The bulk superconductivity sets in at 0.40 K below which the coherence peak is absent and 1/T1 follows a T3 variation, which suggests unconventional superconductivity with line-node gap.
