The electron emission spectrum resulting from thermal collisions of He * (2 3 S) atoms with LaCoO 3 was measured as well as the hν-dependent photoemission spectra. The He * spectrum shows that the lower-lying Co 3d derived (main) bands are strongly suppressed relative to the O 2p derived bands, reflecting the spatial distribution of the initial Co 3d wave functions. On the other hand, the higher-lying Co 3d derived (satellite) band is anomalously enhanced in the He * spectrum. These findings are discussed on the basis of the initial and final configuration interactions, using a Co 2 O 11 cluster

We report evidence for the decay $B^0 \to \pi^0 \pi^0$. The analysis is based on a data sample of 152 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4s)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ storage ring. We find $25.6^{+ 9.3}_{-8.4}(stat)^{+1.6}_{-1.4}(syst)$ $B^0 \to \pi^0 \pi^0$ signal events with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations. We measure the branching fraction to be ($1.7 \pm 0.6 (stat) \pm 0.2 (syst))*10^{-6}$.

We report studies of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay B+/- --> DCPK+/-, where D-CP denotes CP eigenstates of the D-0 - (D) over bar (0) system. The analysis is based on a 29.1 fb(-1) sample collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e(+)e(-) storage ring. We measure ratios of branching fractions, relative to Cabibbo-favored B+/--->D(CP)pi+/-, of B>(B- --> D1K-)/B(B- --> D(1)pi(-)) = 0.125 +/-0.036 +/- 0.010 and B(B- --> D2K-)/B(B- --> D(2)pi(-)) = 0.119 +/- 0.028 +/- 0.006; the index 1 (2) denotes the CP = +1 (-1) eigenstate. We also extract the partial rate asymmetries for B+/- --> DCPK+/-, finding A(1) = 0.29 +/- 0.26 +/- 0.05 and A(2) = -0.22 +/- 0.24 +/- 0.04.

We report the first measurement of the branching fraction for the inclusive decay B → X s l + l - , where l is either an electron or a muon, and X s is a hadronic recoil system that contains an s quark. We analyzed a data sample of 65.4 x 10 6 B meson pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e - asymmetric-energy collider. We find B(B → X s l + l - ) = [6.1 ′ 1.4(stat) + 1 . 4 - 1 . 1 (syst)] × 10 - 6 for dilepton masses greater than 0.2 GeV/c 2 .

We report the first observation of a B meson decay that is not accessible by a direct spectator process. The channel B(0)-->D(+)(s)K- is found in a sample of 85 x 10(6) BB; events, collected with the Belle detector at KEKB, with a branching fraction B(B(0)-->D(+)(s)K-)=(4.6(+1.2)(-1.1)+/-1.3) x 10(-5). We also obtain evidence for the B0-->D(+)(s)pi(-) decay with branching fraction B(B0-->D(+)(s)pi(-))=(2.4(+1.0)(-0.8)+/-0.7) x 10(-5). This value may be used to extract a model-dependent value of |V(ub)|.

We report the observation of prompt $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ via double $c\overline{c}$ production from the ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ continuum. In this process one $c\overline{c}$ pair fragments into a $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ meson while the remaining pair either produces a charmonium state or fragments into open charm. Both cases have been experimentally observed. We find cross sections of $\ensuremath{\sigma}[{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}(\ensuremath{\gamma})]\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathcal{B}({\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\ge}4\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{\text{charged}})=({0.033}_{\ensuremath{-}0.006}^{+0.007}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.009)\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}$ and $\ensuremath{\sigma}({e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}{D}^{*+}X)=({0.53}_{\ensuremath{-}0.15}^{+0.19}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.14)\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{p}\mathrm{b}$ and infer $\ensuremath{\sigma}({e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}c\overline{c})/\ensuremath{\sigma}({e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}X)={0.59}_{\ensuremath{-}0.13}^{+0.15}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12$. These results are obtained from a $46.2\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{f}\mathrm{b}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ data sample collected near the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider.

We report the observation of a narrow peak in the ${K}_{S}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ invariant mass distribution in a sample of exclusive $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}K{K}_{S}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ decays collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collider. The measured mass of the peak is $M=3654\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}6(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{t})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}8(\mathrm{s}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t})\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{M}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/{c}^{2}$, and we place a 90% confidence level upper limit on the width of $\ensuremath{\Gamma}l55\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{M}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/{c}^{2}$. The properties agree with heavy-quark potential model expectations for the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}(2S)$ meson, the $n=2$ singlet $S$ charmonium state.

- Abstract
We report the first measurement of the branching fraction for the inclusive decay B--X(s)l(+)l(-), where l is either an electron or a muon, and X(s) is a hadronic recoil system that contains an s quark. We analyzed a data sample of 65.4 x 10(6) B meson pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) asymmetric-energy collider. We find B(B--X(s)l(+)l(-))=[6.1 +/-1.4(stat) +1.4-1.1(syst)] x 10(-6) for dilepton masses greater than 0.2 GeV/c(2).

- Abstract
We report the first observation of a B meson decay that is not accessible by a direct spectator process. The channel B(0)--D(+)(s)K- is found in a sample of 85 x 10(6) BB; events, collected with the Belle detector at KEKB, with a branching fraction B(B(0)--D(+)(s)K-)=(4.6(+1.2)(-1.1)+/-1.3) x 10(-5). We also obtain evidence for the B0--D(+)(s)pi(-) decay with branching fraction B(B0--D(+)(s)pi(-))=(2.4(+1.0)(-0.8)+/-0.7) x 10(-5). This value may be used to extract a model-dependent value of |V(ub)|.

- Abstract
We report the first observation of the charmless two-body mode B+/---omegaK+/- decay, and a new measurement of the branching fraction for the B+/---omegapi(+/-) decay. The measured branching fractions are B(B+/---omegaK+/-)=(9.2(+2.6)(-2.3)+/-1.0)x10(-6) and B(B+/---omegapi(+/-))=(4.2(+2.0)(-1.8)+/-0.5)x10(-6). We also measure the partial rate asymmetry of B+/---omegaK+/- decays and obtain A(CP)=-0.21+/-0.28+/-0.03. The results are based on a data sample of 29.4 fb(-1) collected on the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider.

- Abstract
We report studies of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay B+/---D(CP)K+/-, where D(CP) denotes CP eigenstates of the D0-D0; system. The analysis is based on a 29.1 fb(-1) sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e(+)e(-) storage ring. We measure ratios of branching fractions, relative to Cabibbo-favored B+/---D(CP)pi(+/-), of B(B---D1K-)/B(B---D1pi(-))=0.125+/-0.036+/-0.010 and B(B---D2K-)/B(B---D2pi(-))=0.119+/-0.028+/-0.006; the index 1 (2) denotes the CP=+1 (-1) eigenstate. We also extract the partial rate asymmetries for B+/---D(CP)K+/-, finding A(1)=0.29+/-0.26+/-0.05 and A(2)=-0.22+/-0.24+/-0.04.

- Abstract
We report the observation of prompt J/psi via double cc; production from the e+e- continuum. In this process one cc; pair fragments into a J/psi meson while the remaining pair either produces a charmonium state or fragments into open charm. Both cases have been experimentally observed. We find cross sections of sigma[e+e- --J/psieta(c)(gamma)]xB(eta(c)--or=4 charged)=(0.033(+0.007)(-0.006)+/-0.009) pb and sigma(e+e- --J/psiD(*+)X)=(0.53(+0.19)(-0.15)+/-0.14) pb and infer sigma(e+e- --J/psicc;)/sigma(e+e- --J/psiX)=0.59(+0.15)(-0.13)+/-0.12. These results are obtained from a 46.2 fb(-1) data sample collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider.

A strong satellite band is observed in the electron spectra of gaseous benzene and toluene obtained by impact of ${\mathrm{He}}^{\mathrm{*}}$(${2}^{3}$S) metastable atoms, although the corresponding band has not been found in ultraviolet and x-ray photoemission spectra. The band is assigned to the lowest-lying satellite ${(}^{2}$${\mathit{A}}_{2\mathit{y}}$ for benzene) predicted previously by many-body calculations, its position being located for the first time. The mechanism for the band enhancement is discussed on the basis of the autoionization process.

By means of Penning-ionization electron spectroscopy the outermost surface layer of a pentacene film on a graphite substrate (cleavage plane) was selectively observed. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy was also applied to observe several layers from the surface. From the analyses of the two types of spectra the subtle changes in the electronic state and the molecular orientation of the outermost layer and also those of inner layers were probed separately during the layer-by-layer epitaxial growth of the film.

- Abstract
The interpretation of x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) spectra in terms of their sensitivity to the hydrogen bonding and the consequent microheterogeneity in liquid water has been debated over a decade. To shed a light on this problem, we report the theoretical reproduction of the debated 1b_{1} peaks observed in the XES spectra of liquid water using semiclassical Kramers-Heisenberg formula. The essence of the temperature and isotope dependence of the 1b_{1} double peaks is explained by molecular dynamics simulations including full vibrational (O─H stretching, bending, and) modes, rotational combined with the density functional theory and core-hole induced dynamics. Some inconsistencies exist with the experimental XES profile, which illustrates the need to employ a more precise theoretical calculations for both geometry sampling and electronic structure using a more sophisticated procedure.

- Abstract
We study the structural dynamics of liquid water by time-resolved anisotropic x-ray scattering under the optical Kerr effect condition. In this way, we can separate the anisotropic scattering decay of 160 fs from the delayed temperature increase of ∼0.1 K occurring at 1 ps and quantify transient changes in the O-O pair distribution function. Polarizable molecular dynamics simulations reproduce well the experiment, indicating transient alignment of molecules along the electric field, which shortens the nearest-neighbor distances. In addition, analysis of the simulated water local structure provides evidence that two hypothesized fluctuating water configurations exhibit different polarizability.

- Abstract
The spin states of Co^{3+} ions in perovskite-type LaCoO_{3}, governed by the complex interplay between the electron-lattice interactions and the strong electron correlations, still remain controversial due to the lack of experimental techniques which can directly detect them. In this Letter, we revealed the tensile-strain dependence of spin states, i.e., the ratio of the high- and low-spin states, in epitaxial thin films and a bulk crystal of LaCoO_{3} via resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering. A tensile strain as small as 1.0% was found to realize different spin states from that in the bulk.

- Abstract
Nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) have a significant influence on the hydrogen bonds in water and aqueous solutions and have thus been the topic of extensive studies. However, the microscopic origin and the corresponding temperature dependence of NQEs have been elusive and still remain the subject of ongoing discussion. Previous x-ray scattering investigations indicate that NQEs on the structure of water exhibit significant temperature dependence [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 047801 (2005)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.94.047801]. Here, by performing wide-angle x-ray scattering of H_{2}O and D_{2}O droplets at temperatures from 275 K down to 240 K, we determine the temperature dependence of NQEs on the structure of water down to the deeply supercooled regime. The data reveal that the magnitude of NQEs on the structure of water is temperature independent, as the structure factor of D_{2}O is similar to H_{2}O if the temperature is shifted by a constant 5 K, valid from ambient conditions to the deeply supercooled regime. Analysis of the accelerated growth of tetrahedral structures in supercooled H_{2}O and D_{2}O also shows similar behavior with a clear 5 K shift. The results indicate a constant compensation between NQEs delocalizing the proton in the librational motion away from the bond and in the OH stretch vibrational modes along the bond. This is consistent with the fact that only the vibrational ground state is populated at ambient and supercooled conditions.

- Abstract
We investigate the polaronic ground state of anatase TiO2 by bulk-sensitive resonant inelastic x-ray spectroscopy (RIXS) at the Ti L3 edge. We find that the formation of the polaron cloud involves a single 95 meV phonon along the c axis, in addition to the 108 meV ab-plane mode previously identified by photoemission. The coupling strength to both modes is the same within error bars, and it is unaffected by the carrier density. These data establish RIXS as a directional bulk-sensitive probe of electron-phonon coupling in solids.

- Abstract
We report on oxygen K-edge soft x-ray emission spectroscopy from a liquid water jet at the Linac Coherent Light Source. We observe significant changes in the spectral content when tuning over a wide range of incident x-ray fluences. In addition the total emission yield decreases at high fluences. These modifications result from reabsorption of x-ray emission by valence-excited molecules generated by the Auger cascade. Our observations have major implications for future x-ray emission studies at intense x-ray sources. We highlight the importance of the x-ray pulse length with respect to the core-hole lifetime.

- Abstract
The electronic structure of doped Mn in (Ga,Mn)As is studied by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. From configuration-interaction cluster-model calculations, the line shapes of the Mn L3 resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra can be explained by d-d excitations from the Mn ground state dominated by charge-transferred states, in which hole carriers are bound to the Mn impurities, rather than a pure acceptor Mn2+ ground state. Unlike archetypical d-d excitation, the peak widths are broader than the experimental energy resolution. We attribute the broadening to a finite lifetime of the d-d excitations, which decay rapidly to electron-hole pairs in the host valence and conduction bands through the hybridization of the Mn 3d orbital with the ligand band.

- Abstract
High-resolution O 1s resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of liquid H2O, D2O, and HDO, obtained by excitation near the preedge resonance show, in the elastic line region, well-separated multiple vibrational structures corresponding to the internal OH stretch vibration in the ground state of water. The energy of the first-order vibrational excitation is strongly blueshifted with respect to the main band in the infrared or Raman spectra of water, indicating that water molecules with a highly weakened or broken donating hydrogen bond are correlated with the preedge structure in the x-ray absorption spectrum. The vibrational profile of preedge excited HDO water is well fitted with 50%±20% greater OH-stretch contribution compared to OD, which strongly supports a preference for OH being the weakened or broken H-bond in agreement with the well-known picture that D2O makes stronger H-bonds than H2O. Accompanying path-integral molecular dynamics simulations show that this is particularly the case for strongly asymmetrically H-bonded molecules, i.e., those that are selected by preedge excitation.

- Abstract
We report the first measurement of the branching fraction for the inclusive decay B-->X(s)l(+)l(-), where l is either an electron or a muon, and X(s) is a hadronic recoil system that contains an s quark. We analyzed a data sample of 65.4 x 10(6) B meson pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) asymmetric-energy collider. We find B(B-->X(s)l(+)l(-))=[6.1 +/-1.4(stat) +1.4-1.1(syst)] x 10(-6) for dilepton masses greater than 0.2 GeV/c(2).

- Abstract

- Abstract
We report the first observation of the charmless two-body mode B+/--->omegaK+/- decay, and a new measurement of the branching fraction for the B+/--->omegapi(+/-) decay. The measured branching fractions are B(B+/--->omegaK+/-)=(9.2(+2.6)(-2.3)+/-1.0)x10(-6) and B(B+/--->omegapi(+/-))=(4.2(+2.0)(-1.8)+/-0.5)x10(-6). We also measure the partial rate asymmetry of B+/--->omegaK+/- decays and obtain A(CP)=-0.21+/-0.28+/-0.03. The results are based on a data sample of 29.4 fb(-1) collected on the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider.

- Abstract
The B meson decay modes B-->Dpp; and B-->D(*)pp; have been studied using 29.4 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. The B;(0)-->D(0)pp; and B;(0)-->D(*0)pp; decays have been observed for the first time with branching fractions B(B;(0)-->D(0)pp;)=(1.18+/-0.15+/-0.16)x10(-4) and B(B;(0)-->D(*0)pp;)=(1.20(+0.33)(-0.29)+/-0.21)x10(-4). No signal has been found for the B+-->D(+)pp; and B+-->D(*+)pp; decay modes, and the corresponding upper limits at 90% C.L. are presented.

- Abstract
We report the observation of prompt J/psi via double cc; production from the e+e- continuum. In this process one cc; pair fragments into a J/psi meson while the remaining pair either produces a charmonium state or fragments into open charm. Both cases have been experimentally observed. We find cross sections of sigma[e+e- -->J/psieta(c)(gamma)]xB(eta(c)-->>or=4 charged)=(0.033(+0.007)(-0.006)+/-0.009) pb and sigma(e+e- -->J/psiD(*+)X)=(0.53(+0.19)(-0.15)+/-0.14) pb and infer sigma(e+e- -->J/psicc;)/sigma(e+e- -->J/psiX)=0.59(+0.15)(-0.13)+/-0.12. These results are obtained from a 46.2 fb(-1) data sample collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider.

- Abstract
We report the observation of a narrow peak in the K(S)K-pi(+) invariant mass distribution in a sample of exclusive B-->KK(S)K-pi(+) decays collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. The measured mass of the peak is M=3654+/-6(stat)+/-8(syst) MeV/c(2), and we place a 90% confidence level upper limit on the width of Gamma<55 MeV/c(2). The properties agree with heavy-quark potential model expectations for the eta(c)(2S) meson, the n=2 singlet S charmonium state.
