Abstract: We report the first measurement of the neutron cross section on argon in the energy range of 100-800 MeV. The measurement was obtained with a 4.3-h exposure of the Mini-CAPTAIN detector to the WNR/LANSCE beam at LANL. The total cross section is measured from the attenuation coefficient of the neutron flux as it traverses the liquid argon volume. A set of 2631 candidate interactions is divided in bins of the neutron kinetic energy calculated from time-of-flight measurements. These interactions are reconstructed with custom-made algorithms specifically designed for the data in a time projection chamber the size of the Mini-CAPTAIN detector. The energy averaged cross section is 0.91±0.10(stat)±0.09(syst) b. A comparison of the measured cross section is made to the GEANT4 and FLUKA event generator packages, where the energy averaged cross sections in this range are 0.60 and 0.68 b, respectively.

4. Dispersion of Molecular Patterns Written in Turbulent Air

Abstract: We study the dispersion of tiny molecular clouds in turbulence by writing patterns in turbulent air and following their deformation in time. The writing is done by fusing O_{2} and N_{2} molecules into NO in the focus of a strong ultraviolet laser beam. By crossing several of these laser beams, patterns that have both small and large scales can be painted. The patterns are visualized a while later by inducing fluorescence of the NO molecules with a second UV laser and registering the image. The width of the lines that make the pattern is approximately 50 μm, a few times the Kolmogorov length η, the smallest length scale in turbulence, while the overall size of the patterns (≈4 mm) is inside the inertial range of the used turbulent jet flow. At small scales molecular clouds disperse under the joint action of molecular diffusion and turbulence. The experiments reveal for the first time this subtle, yet very important interaction. At macroscales (≈200 η) we verify the Batchelor dispersion of objects whose size is inside the inertial range; however, the expected influence of molecular diffusion is smaller than the accuracy of the experiments.

Abstract: We report the first results of a search for leptophobic dark matter (DM) from the Coherent–CAPTAIN-Mills (CCM) liquid argon (LAr) detector. An engineering run with 120 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and 17.9×1020 protons on target (POT) was performed in fall 2019 to study the characteristics of the CCM detector. The operation of this 10-ton detector was strictly light based with a threshold of 50 keV and used coherent elastic scattering off argon nuclei to detect DM. Despite only 1.5 months of accumulated luminosity, contaminated LAr, and nonoptimized shielding, CCM’s first engineering run has already achieved sensitivity to previously unexplored parameter space of light dark matter models with a baryonic vector portal. With an expected background of 115 005 events, we observe 115 005+16.5 events which is compatible with background expectations. For a benchmark mediator-to-DM mass ratio of mVB/mχ=2.1, DM masses within the range 9 MeV≲mχ≲50 MeV are excluded at 90% C. L. in the leptophobic model after applying the Feldman-Cousins test statistic. CCM’s upgraded run with 200 PMTs, filtered LAr, improved shielding, and 10 times more POT will be able to exclude the remaining thermal relic density parameter space of this model, as well as probe new parameter space of other leptophobic DM models.

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of flux-integrated single differential cross sections for charged-current (CC) muon neutrino (ν_{μ}) scattering on argon with a muon and a proton in the final state, ^{40}Ar (ν_{μ},μp)X. The measurement was carried out using the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber detector with an exposure of 4.59×10^{19} protons on target. Events are selected to enhance the contribution of CC quasielastic (CCQE) interactions. The data are reported in terms of a total cross section as well as single differential cross sections in final state muon and proton kinematics. We measure the integrated per-nucleus CCQE-like cross section (i.e., for interactions leading to a muon, one proton, and no pions above detection threshold) of (4.93±0.76_{stat}±1.29_{sys})×10^{-38} cm^{2}, in good agreement with theoretical calculations. The single differential cross sections are also in overall good agreement with theoretical predictions, except at very forward muon scattering angles that correspond to low-momentum-transfer events.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the double-differential and total muon neutrino charged current inclusive cross sections on argon at a mean neutrino energy of 0.8 GeV. Data were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab Booster neutrino beam and correspond to 1.6×10^{20} protons on target of exposure. The measured differential cross sections are presented as a function of muon momentum, using multiple Coulomb scattering as a momentum measurement technique, and the muon angle with respect to the beam direction. We compare the measured cross sections to multiple neutrino event generators and find better agreement with those containing more complete treatment of quasielastic scattering processes at low Q^{2}. The total flux integrated cross section is measured to be 0.693±0.010(stat)±0.165(syst)×10^{-38} cm^{2}.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the double-differential and total muon neutrino charged current inclusive cross sections on argon at a mean neutrino energy of 0.8 GeV. Data were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab Booster neutrino beam and correspond to 1.6×1020 protons on target of exposure. The measured differential cross sections are presented as a function of muon momentum, using multiple Coulomb scattering as a momentum measurement technique, and the muon angle with respect to the beam direction. We compare the measured cross sections to multiple neutrino event generators and find better agreement with those containing more complete treatment of quasielastic scattering processes at low Q2. The total flux integrated cross section is measured to be 0.693±0.010(stat)±0.165(syst)×10−38 cm2.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the neutron cross section on argon in the energy range of 100-800 MeV. The measurement was obtained with a 4.3-hour exposure of the Mini-CAPTAIN detector to the WNR/LANSCE beam at LANL. The total cross section is measured from the attenuation coefficient of the neutron flux as it traverses the liquid argon volume. A set of 2,631 candidate interactions is divided in bins of the neutron kinetic energy calculated from time-of-flight measurements. These interactions are reconstructed with custom-made algorithms specifically designed for the data in a time projection chamber the size of the Mini-CAPTAIN detector. The energy averaged cross section is $0.91 \pm{} 0.10~\mathrm{(stat.)} \pm{} 0.09~\mathrm{(sys.)}~\mathrm{barns}$. Abstract: The rare decay B→πℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} arises from b→d flavor-changing neutral currents and could be sensitive to physics beyond the standard model. Here, we present the first ab initio QCD calculation of the B→π tensor form factor f_{T}. Together with the vector and scalar form factors f_{+} and f_{0} from our companion work [J. A. Bailey et al., Phys. Rev. D 92, 014024 (2015)], these parametrize the hadronic contribution to B→π semileptonic decays in any extension of the standard model. We obtain the total branching ratio BR(B^{+}→π^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-})=20.4(2.1)×10^{-9} in the standard model, which is the most precise theoretical determination to date, and agrees with the recent measurement from the LHCb experiment [R. Aaij et al., J. High Energy Phys. 12 (2012) 125].

Abstract: The dynamical behavior of charge-stabilized colloidal crystals that consist of polystyrene spheres in highly deionized water is determined by solvent flow mediated interactions and by ionic effects. The expression of these effects strongly depends on the polarization of crystal waves. Using dynamic light scattering we trace all but the fastest known modes of motion and evaluate the influence of ion friction. We find a new mode that we ascribe to ion retardation. Our experiments point to the importance of electrophoresis for microscopic colloid dynamics.

This is our first physics result from our ${N}_{f}=2+1+1$ ensembles, and the first calculation of ${f}_{{K}^{+}}/{f}_{{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}}$ from lattice-QCD simulations at the physical point. Our result is the most precise lattice-QCD determination of ${f}_{{K}^{+}}/{f}_{{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}}$, with an error comparable to the current world average. When combined with experimental measurements of the leptonic branching fractions, it leads to a precise determination of $|{V}_{\mathrm{us}}|/|{V}_{\mathrm{ud}}|=0.2309(9)(4)$ where the errors are theoretical and experimental, respectively.

Abstract: We give experimental evidence for a new bifurcation structure that arises when smooth dynamical systems cross a boundary. Our experiment concerns a driven impacting leaf-spring oscillator with a very precise control of the driving amplitude. The results are in surprisingly good agreement with the predictions of a simple nonlinear mapping that is valid near grazing impact (i.e., impact with zero velocity). The agreement is surprising because a multitude of vibration modes of the spring is excited upon impact whereas the mapping is two dimensional. These findings point to the universality of the observed bifurcation structure.

Abstract: The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab reports results from an analysis of ν[over ¯](e) appearance data from 11.27×10(20) protons on target in the antineutrino mode, an increase of approximately a factor of 2 over the previously reported results. An event excess of 78.4±28.5 events (2.8σ) is observed in the energy range 200E(ν)(QE)1250 MeV. If interpreted in a two-neutrino oscillation model, ν[over ¯](μ)→ν[over ¯](e), the best oscillation fit to the excess has a probability of 66% while the background-only fit has a χ(2) probability of 0.5% relative to the best fit. The data are consistent with antineutrino oscillations in the 0.01Δm(2)1.0 eV(2) range and have some overlap with the evidence for antineutrino oscillations from the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector. All of the major backgrounds are constrained by in situ event measurements so nonoscillation explanations would need to invoke new anomalous background processes. The neutrino mode running also shows an excess at low energy of 162.0±47.8 events (3.4σ) but the energy distribution of the excess is marginally compatible with a simple two neutrino oscillation formalism. Expanded models with several sterile neutrinos can reduce the incompatibility by allowing for CP violating effects between neutrino and antineutrino oscillations.

Abstract: Using a novel device that enables the real-time measurement of high-order structure functions in turbulence with superior statistical accuracy, we study the shape of the structure function at scales where it is influenced by viscosity. The experiments on a variety of laboratory turbulent flows demonstrate that this shape is universal. We argue that it reflects a fundamental property of multifractals: multiscaling. We present accurate experimental scaling functions $\ensuremath{\zeta}(p)$ and, finally, comment on the nature of the skewness of the distribution function of velocity increments by comparing transverse and longitudinal distribution functions.

Abstract: The semileptonic decay channel $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D\ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\nu}$ is sensitive to the presence of a scalar current, such as that mediated by a charged-Higgs boson. Recently, the BABAR experiment reported the first observation of the exclusive semileptonic decay $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D{\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$, finding an approximately $2\ensuremath{\sigma}$ disagreement with the standard-model prediction for the ratio $R(D)=\mathrm{BR}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D\ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\nu})/\mathrm{BR}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu})$, where $\ensuremath{\ell}=e,\ensuremath{\mu}$. We compute this ratio of branching fractions using hadronic form factors computed in unquenched lattice QCD and obtain $R(D)=0.316(12)(7)$, where the errors are statistical and total systematic, respectively. This result is the first standard-model calculation of $R(D)$ from ab initio full QCD. Its error is smaller than that of previous estimates, primarily due to the reduced uncertainty in the scalar form factor ${f}_{0}({q}^{2})$. Our determination of $R(D)$ is approximately $1\ensuremath{\sigma}$ higher than previous estimates and, thus, reduces the tension with experiment. We also compute $R(D)$ in models with electrically charged scalar exchange, such as the type-II two-Higgs-doublet model. Once again, our result is consistent with, but approximately $1\ensuremath{\sigma}$ higher than, previous estimates for phenomenologically relevant values of the scalar coupling in the type-II model. As a by-product of our calculation, we also present the standard-model prediction for the longitudinal-polarization ratio ${P}_{L}(D)=0.325(4)(3)$.

Abstract: The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab reports results from a search for ¯ν_{μ}→¯ν_{e} oscillations, using a data sample corresponding to 5.66×10²⁰ protons on target. An excess of 20.9±14.0 events is observed in the energy range 475E_{ν}^{QE}1250 MeV, which, when constrained by the observed ¯ν_{μ} events, has a probability for consistency with the background-only hypothesis of 0.5%. On the other hand, fitting for ¯ν_{μ}→¯ν_{e} oscillations, the best-fit point has a χ² probability of 8.7%. The data are consistent with ¯ν_{μ}→¯ν_{e} oscillations in the 0.1 to 1.0 eV² Δm² range and with the evidence for antineutrino oscillations from the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Abstract: We periodically modulate a turbulent wind-tunnel flow with an active grid. We find a resonant enhancement of the mean turbulent dissipation rate at a modulation frequency which equals the large-eddy turnover rate. Thus, we find the best frequency to inject energy into a turbulent flow. The resonant response is characterized by the emergence of vortical structures in the flow and depends on the spatial mode of the stirring grid.

Abstract: Charged current single pion production (CC{pi}{sup +}) and charged current quasi-elastic scattering (CCQE) are the most abundant interaction types for neutrinos at energies around 1 GeV, a region of great interest to oscillation experiments. The cross-sections for these processes, however, are not well understood in this energy range. This dissertation presents a measurement of the ratio of CC{pi}{sup +} to CCQE cross-sections for muon neutrinos on mineral oil (CH{sub 2}) in the MiniBooNE experiment. The measurement is presented here both with and without corrections for hadronic re-interactions in the target nucleus and is given as a function of neutrino energy in the range 0.4 GeV < E{sub {nu}} < 2.4 GeV. With more than 46,000 CC{pi}{sup +} events collected in MiniBooNE, and with a fractional uncertainty of roughly 11% in the region of highest statistics, this measurement represents a dramatic improvement in statistics and precision over previous CC{pi}{sup +} and CCQE measurements.

Abstract: We report the first observation of off-axis neutrino interactions in the MiniBooNE detector from the NuMI beam line at Fermilab. The MiniBooNE detector is located 745 m from the NuMI production target, at 110 mrad angle (6.3°) with respect to the NuMI beam axis. Samples of charged-current quasielastic νμ and νe interactions are analyzed and found to be in agreement with expectation. This provides a direct verification of the expected pion and kaon contributions to the neutrino flux and validates the modeling of the NuMI off-axis beam.

Abstract: We study the free surface of a turbulent channel flow, in particular, the relation between the statistical properties of the wrinkled surface and those of the velocity field beneath it. For an irregular flow shed off a vertical cylinder, surface indentations are strongly correlated with vortices in the subsurface flow. For fully developed turbulence this correlation is dramatically reduced. This is because the large eddies excite random capillary-gravity waves that travel in all directions across the surface. Both their predominant wavelength and their anisotropy are determined by the subsurface turbulence.

Abstract: The MiniBooNE Collaboration reports first results of a search for nu e appearance in a nu mu beam. With two largely independent analyses, we observe no significant excess of events above the background for reconstructed neutrino energies above 475 MeV. The data are consistent with no oscillations within a two-neutrino appearance-only oscillation model.

The measurements were made with dissolved NaCl in heavy water to enhance the sensitivity and signature for neutral-current interactions. The flux is found to be 5.21+/-0.27(stat)+/-0.38(syst)x10(6) cm(-2) s(-1), in agreement with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of these and other solar and reactor neutrino results yields Deltam(2)=7.1(-0.6)(+1.2)x10(-5) eV(2) and theta= 32.5(-2.3)(+2.4) degrees. Maximal mixing is rejected at the equivalent of 5.4 standard deviations.

Abstract: Coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering is a four-wave mixing technique that provides information on various physical properties of the scattering medium in the spectral domain. Being based on density gratings generated by dipole forces, the method requires two pump beams of sufficient spectral width to span the full response bandwidth of the scattering medium. We provide experimental data on the scattered spectrum as a function of the coherence between the two pump beams and derive the corresponding pump beam spectrum. We argue that all experiments on coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering to date, have, in fact, been performed in the incoherent regime and show that orders of magnitude in scattering efficiency are to be expected when the experiments are performed with bandwidth-limited picosecond laser pulses.

Abstract: The 8B flux from elastic scattering (ES) and charged current (CC) of electrons was recorded at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) between November 2, 1999 and January 15, 2001. Data were partitioned into two sets then analyzed. As a result, the first direct indication of a nonelectron flavor component in the solar neutrino flux was established.

Abstract: Solar neutrinos from the decay of 8B have been detected at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) via the charged current (CC) reaction on deuterium and by the elastic scattering (ES) of electrons. The CC reaction is sensitive exclusively to νe, while the ES reaction also has a small sensitivity to νμ and ντ. The flux of νe from 8B decay measured by the CC reaction rate is φCC(ν e )=[1.75±0.07(stat.) −0.11 +0.12 (syst.)×0.05(theor.)]×106cm−2s−1. Assuming no flavor transformation, the flux inferred from the ES reaction rate is φES(ν x )=[2.39±0.34(stat.) −0.14 +0.16 (syst.)]×106cm−2s−1. Comparison of φCC(νe) to the Super-Kamiokande collaboration’s precision value of φES(νx) yields a 3.3σ difference, assuming the systematic uncertainties are normally distributed, providing evidence that there is a nonelectron flavor active neutrino component in the solar flux. The total flux of active 8B neutrinos is thus determined to be (5.44±0.99)×106 cm−2 s−1, in close agreement with the predictions of solar models.

Abstract: Solar neutrinos from (8)B decay have been detected at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory via the charged current (CC) reaction on deuterium and the elastic scattering (ES) of electrons. The flux of nu(e)'s is measured by the CC reaction rate to be straight phi(CC)(nu(e)) = 1.75 +/- 0.07(stat)(+0.12)(-0.11)(syst) +/- 0.05(theor) x 10(6) cm(-2) s(-1). Comparison of straight phi(CC)(nu(e)) to the Super-Kamiokande Collaboration's precision value of the flux inferred from the ES reaction yields a 3.3 sigma difference, assuming the systematic uncertainties are normally distributed, providing evidence of an active non- nu(e) component in the solar flux. The total flux of active 8B neutrinos is determined to be 5.44+/-0.99 x 10(6) cm(-2) s(-1).
