4. Field-induced orientation of nonlevitated microcrystals of superconducting YBa2Cu3O(7-x)

Abstract

X-ray diffraction patterns of superconducting YBa2Cu3O(7-x) particles which have typical dimensions D of less than 5 microns and do not levitate in an inhomogeneous magnetic field at T less than Tc show marked evidence of particle alignment when powder specimens are subjected to a 0.5-T field at T less than Tc, but reveal random orientation for T greater than Tc. A majority of the particles align preferentially with their antiphase twin boundary planes and a-b planes along the applied field, but a minority align with their b axes along the field.

15. Evolution of the local superconducting density of states in ErRh4B4 close to the ferromagnetic transition.

Abstract

We present local tunneling spectroscopy experiments in the superconducting and ferromagnetic phases of the reentrant superconductor ErRh4B4. The tunneling conductance curves jump from showing normal to superconducting features within a few mK close to the ferromagnetic transition temperature, with a clear hysteretic behavior. Within the ferromagnetic phase, we do not detect any superconducting correlations. Within the superconducting phase we find a peculiar V-shaped density of states at low energies, which is produced by the magnetically modulated phase that coexists with superconductivity just before ferromagnetism sets in.

16. Onset of energy dissipation in ballistic atomic wires.

Abstract

Electronic transport at finite voltages in free-standing gold atomic chains of up to seven atoms in length is studied at low temperatures using a scanning tunneling microscope. The conductance vs voltage curves show that transport in these single-mode ballistic atomic wires is nondissipative up to a finite voltage threshold of the order of several mV. The onset of dissipation and resistance within the wire corresponds to the excitation of the atomic vibrations by the electrons traversing the wire and is very sensitive to strain.
