It was pointed out in a recent paper that the observed cooling rate of old, cold neutron stars (NS) can provide an upper limit on the transition rate of neutron to mirror neutron (n-n^{'}). This limit is so stringent that it would preclude any discovery of n→n^{'} oscillation in the current round of terrestrial searches for the process. Motivated by this crucially important conclusion, we critically analyze this suggestion and note an interesting new effect present in nearly exact mirror models for n→n^{'} oscillation, which significantly affects this bound. The new element is the β decay n^{'}→p^{'}+e^{'}+ν[over ¯]_{e}^{'}, which creates a cloud of mirror particles n^{'}, p^{'}, e^{'}, and D^{'} inside the NS core. The e^{'} can "rob" the energy generated by the n→n^{'} transition via e-e^{'} scattering enabled by the presence of a (minute) millicharge in mirror particles. This energy is emitted as unobserved mirror photons via fast mirror bremsstrahlung leading to a relaxation of this upper limit.

Violation of Lorentz invariance (VLI) has been suggested as an explanation of the superluminal velocities of muon neutrinos reported by OPERA. In this Letter, we show that the amount of VLI required to explain this result poses severe difficulties with the kinematics of the pion decay, extending its lifetime and reducing the momentum carried away by the neutrinos. We show that the OPERA experiment limits α=(ν(ν)-c)/c<4×10(-6). We then take recourse to cosmic-ray data on the spectrum of muons and neutrinos generated in Earth's atmosphere to provide a stronger bound on VLI: (ν-c)/c<10(-12)., (© 2011 American Physical Society)

If the recently discovered charmonium state X( 3872) is a loosely bound S-wave molecule of the charm mesons D0 D(*0) or D(*0) D0, it can be produced in B-meson decay by the coalescence of charm mesons. If this coalescence mechanism dominates, the ratio of the differential rate for B+ -->D(0) D(* 0)K+ near the D0 D(*0) threshold and the rate for B+ -->XK+ is a function of the D0 D(*0) invariant mass and hadron masses only. The identification of the X( 3872) as a D0 D(*0)/D(*0)D0 molecule can be confirmed by observing an enhancement in the D0 D(*0) invariant mass distribution near the threshold. An estimate of the branching fraction for B+ -->XK+ is consistent with observations if X has quantum numbers J(PC)=1(++ ) and if J/psi pi(+) pi(-) is one of its major decay modes.

We show that direct dark-matter detection experiments can distinguish between pointlike and nonpointlike dark-matter candidates. The shape of the nuclear recoil-energy spectrum from pointlike dark-matter particles, e.g., neutralinos, is determined by the velocity distribution of dark matter in the galactic halo and by nuclear form factors. Typical cross sections of nonpointlike dark matter, for example, Q-balls, have a new form factor, which decreases rapidly with the recoil energy. A signal from nonpointlike dark matter is expected to peak near the experimental threshold and to fall off rapidly at higher energies.

We analyze n-n* oscillations in generic models with large extra dimensions in which standard-model fields propagate and fermion wave functions have strong localization. We find that in these models n-n* oscillations might occur at levels not too far below the current limit.

We argue that the Fourier transform of the exponential e(-betaV(R)) of the static interquark potential in QCD is positive. It has been shown by Lieb some time ago that this property allows in the same limit of static, spin independent potential, to prove a certain mass relation between baryons with different quark flavors.

We suggest the study of events in the Super-Kamiokande neutrino data due to charged- and neutral-current neutrino reactions followed by weak and/or electromagnetic decays of struck nuclei and fragments thereof. This study could improve the prospects of obtaining evidence for tau production from nu(mu)-->nu(tau) oscillations and could augment the data sample used to disfavor nu(mu)-->nu(sterile) oscillations.
