We use midinfrared pulses with stable carrier-envelope phase offset to drive molecular vibrations in the charge transfer salt ET-F2TCNQ, a prototypical one-dimensional Mott insulator. We find that the Mott gap, which is probed resonantly with 10 fs laser pulses, oscillates with the pump field. This observation reveals that molecular excitations can coherently perturb the electronic on-site interactions (Hubbard U) by changing the local orbital wave function. The gap oscillates at twice the frequency of the vibrational mode, indicating that the molecular distortions couple quadratically to the local charge density [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We measure the ultrafast recombination of photoexcited quasiparticles (holon-doublon pairs) in the one dimensional Mott insulator ET-F2TCNQ as a function of external pressure, which is used to tune the electronic structure. At each pressure value, we first fit the static optical properties and extract the electronic bandwidth t and the intersite correlation energy V. We then measure the recombination times as a function of pressure, and we correlate them with the corresponding microscopic parameters. We find that the recombination times scale differently than for metals and semiconductors. A fit to our data based on the time-dependent extended Hubbard Hamiltonian suggests that the competition between local recombination and derealization of the Mott-Hubbard exciton dictates the efficiency of the recombination. To control the efficiency of photoinduced charge-order melting in perovskite manganites, we performed femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy using double-pulse excitation on Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3. The results revealed that the transfer of the spectral weight from the near-infrared to infrared region by the second pump pulse is considerably enhanced by the first pump pulse and that the suppression of crystal anisotropy, that is, the decrease of long-range lattice deformations due to the charge order by the first pump pulse is a key factor to enhance the charge-order melting. This double-pulse excitation method can be applied to various photoinduced transitions in complex materials with electronic and structural instabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acoustically induced dressed states of long-lived erbium ions in a crystal are demonstrated. These states are formed by rapid modulation of two-level systems via strain induced by surface acoustic waves whose frequencies exceed the optical linewidth of the ion ensemble. Multiple sidebands and the reduction of their intensities appearing near the surface are evidence of a strong interaction between the acoustic waves and the ions. This development allows for on-chip control of long-lived ions and paves the way to highly coherent hybrid quantum systems with telecom photons, acoustic phonons, and electrons.

Certain types of media breaking both space-inversion (P) and time-reversal (T) symmetries but preserving their combination PT exhibit the polarization rotation of reflected light even when that of transmitted light is prohibited. Such an effect is termed nonreciprocal rotation of reflected light (NRR). Although NRR shows nearly the same phenomenon as the magnetooptical Kerr effect or, equivalently, the Hall effect at optical frequencies, its origin is distinct and ascribed to a magnetoelectric (ME) effect at optical frequencies, i.e., the optical ME effect. Here we show the observation of NRR in a metallic antiferromagnet TbB_{4}. The result demonstrates that the ME effect in a metallic system, which is considered to be ill defined, can be detected using reflected light. Furthermore, we spatially resolve antiferromagnetic domains in TbB_{4} by microscope observations of NRR. Our work offers a unique way to probe the ME effect in metallic systems.

Strain-mediated interaction between phonons and telecom photons is demonstrated using excited states of erbium ions embedded in a mechanical resonator. Owing to the extremely long-lived nature of rare-earth ions, the dissipation rate of the optical resonance falls below that of the mechanical one. Thus, a "reversed dissipation regime" is achieved in the optical frequency region. We experimentally demonstrate an optomechanical coupling rate g_{0}=2π×21.7  Hz, and numerically reveal that the interaction causes stimulated excitation of erbium ions. Numerical analyses further indicate the possibility of g_{0} exceeding the dissipation rates of erbium and mechanical systems, thereby leading to single-photon strong coupling. This strain-mediated interaction, moreover, involves the spin degree of freedom, and has a potential to be extended to highly coherent opto-electro-mechanical hybrid systems in the reversed dissipation regime.

Terahertz lights are usually generated through the optical rectification process within a femtosecond laser pulse in noncentrosymmetric materials. Here, we report a new generation mechanism of terahertz lights based upon a photoinduced phase transition, in which an electronic structure is rapidly changed by a photoirradiation. When a ferroelectric organic molecular compound, tetrathiafulvalene-p-chloranil, is excited by a femtosecond laser pulse, the ionic-to-neutral transition is driven and simultaneously a strong terahertz radiation is produced. By analyzing the terahertz electric-field waveforms and their dependence on the polarization direction of the incident laser pulse, we demonstrate that the terahertz radiation originates from the ultrafast decrease of the spontaneous polarization in the photoinduced ionic-to-neutral transition. The efficiency of the observed terahertz radiation via the photoinduced phase transition mechanism is found to be much higher than that via the optical rectification in the same material and in a typical terahertz emitter, ZnTe.

We numerically and experimentally investigate strain-induced coupling between dark and bright excitons and its dynamic control using a gallium arsenide (GaAs) micromechanical resonator. Uniaxial strain induced by the mechanical resonance efficiently detunes the exciton energies and modulates the coupling strength via the deformation potential in GaAs. This allows optical access to the long-lived dark states without using any external electromagnetic field. This field-free approach could be expanded to a wide range of solid-state materials, leading to on-chip excitonic memories and circuits based on micromechanical resonators.

We report a new photoinduced transition from a nonordered phase to a transient ordered phase with symmetry breaking in an organic charge-transfer compound, dimethyltetrathiafulvalene (DMTTF)-dibromodichloro-p-benzoquinone (2,6QBr(2)Cl(2)), which is a neutral compound located near the neutral-ionic phase boundary and shows quantum paraelectricity at low temperatures. By an irradiation of a femtosecond laser pulse, an ionic domain consisting of ~40 molecules is introduced into the neutral lattice per photon, giving rise to coherent molecular oscillations with fractional charge modulations over ~400 molecules. This response is due to the recovery of ferroelectric nature from the quantum paraelectricity by a photoinjection of an ionic domain with a large dipole moment.

Carrier-induced dynamic backaction in micromechanical resonators is demonstrated. Thermal vibration of an n-GaAs/i-GaAs bilayer cantilever is amplified by optical band-gap excitation, and for the excitation power above a critical value, self-oscillations are induced. These phenomena are found in the [1[over ¯]10]-oriented cantilever, whereas the damping (deamplification) is observed in the [1[over ¯]10] orientation. This optomechanical coupling does not require any optical cavities but is instead based on the piezoelectric effect that is generated by photoinduced carriers.

Pb islands grown on a Si substrate transform at room temperature from a flattop facet geometry into an unusual ring shape. The volume-preserving mass transport is catalyzed by the electrical field from the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope. The ring morphology results from the competing classical and quantum effects in the shape relaxation. The latter is enhanced by the large anisotropy of the effective mass, and leads to a sequential strip-flow growth on alternating strips of the same facet defined by substrate steps, showing its dynamical impact on the stability of a nanostructure.

We report on the results of angle-resolved photoemission experiments on a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) MX-chain compound [Ni(chxn)2Br]Br2, which shows a gigantic nonlinear optical effect. A "band" having about 500 meV energy dispersion is found in the first half of the Brillouin zone, but disappears at kb/pi approximately 1/2. These spectral features are well reproduced by the d-p chain model with a small charge-transfer energy Delta compared with that of 1D Cu-O compounds. We propose that this smaller Delta is the origin of the absence of clear spin-charge separation in the photoemission spectra and the strong nonlinear optical effect.

To examine a possible biological mechanism for a cognitive timer, the stochastic dynamics of a network of neurons possessing two stable states ("on" and "off" states) is studied. The fraction of on neurons existing at t = 0 remains large for an extended interval, and then abruptly falls. The distribution of the lengths of the interval is scale invariant in the following sense: The ratio (k root of (mu(k))/m, with m and mu(k) being the mean and the kth central moment, respectively, is invariant under scale transformations of m and mu(k). In the special case k = 2, this gives Weber's law, a hallmark of cognitive timing.
