Abstract

We report on the results of the first measurement of exclusive f{sub 0}(980) meson photoproduction on protons for E{sub {gamma}}=3.0-3.8 GeV and -t=0.4-1.0 GeV{sup 2}. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The resonance was detected via its decay in the {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} channel by performing a partial wave analysis of the reaction {gamma}p{yields}p{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}. Clear evidence of the f{sub 0}(980) meson was found in the interference between P and S waves at M{sub {pi}{sup +}}{sub {pi}{sup -}}{approx}1 GeV. The S-wave differential cross section integrated in the mass range of the f{sub 0}(980) was found to be a factor of about 50 smaller than the cross section for the {rho} meson. This is the first time the f{sub 0}(980) meson has been measured in a photoproduction experiment.

Abstract

The reaction 2H(e,e'p)n has been studied with full kinematic coverage for photon virtuality 1.75Q25.5 GeV2. Comparisons of experimental data with theory indicate that for very low values of neutron recoil momentum (p(n)100 MeV/c) the neutron is primarily a spectator and the reaction can be described by the plane-wave impulse approximation. For 100p(n)750 MeV/c, proton-neutron rescattering dominates the cross section, while Delta production followed by the NDelta--NN transition is the primary contribution at higher momenta.

Abstract

We report a new measurement of the exclusive electroproduction reaction gamma*_p --> pi0_p to explore the evolution from soft nonperturbative physics to hard processes via the Q2 dependence of the magnetic (M1+), electric (E1+), and scalar (S1+) multipoles in the N --> Delta transition. 9000 differential cross section data points cover W from threshold to 1.4 GeV/c2, 4pi center-of-mass solid angle, and Q2 from 3 to 6 GeV2/c2, the highest yet achieved. It is found that the magnetic form factor G^*M decreases with Q2 more steeply than the proton magnetic form factor, the ratio E1+/M1+ is small and negative, indicating strong helicity nonconservation, and the ratio S1+/M1+ is negative, while its magnitude increases with Q2.

Abstract

The reaction {gamma}p{yields}pK{sup +}K{sup -} was studied at Jefferson Lab with photon energies from 1.8 to 3.8 GeV using a tagged photon beam. The goal was to search for a {theta}{sup ++} pentaquark, a narrow, doubly charged baryon state having strangeness S=+1 and isospin I=1, in the pK{sup +} invariant mass spectrum. No statistically significant evidence of a {theta}{sup ++} was found. Upper limits on the total and differential cross section for the reaction {gamma}p{yields}K{sup -}{theta}{sup ++} were obtained in the mass range from 1.5 to 2.0 GeV/c{sup 2}, with an upper limit for a narrow resonance with a mass M{sub {theta}{sup ++}}=1.54 GeV/c{sup 2} of about 0.15 nb, 95% C.L.. This result places a stringent upper limit on the {theta}{sup ++} width {gamma}{sub {theta}{sup ++}}

Abstract

For the first time, the reaction gamma d -> Lambda n K+ has been analyzed in order to search for the exotic pentaquark baryon Theta+(1540). The data were taken at Jefferson Lab, using the Hall-B tagged-photon beam of energy between 0.8 and 3.6 GeV and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). No statistically significant structures were observed in the nK+ invariant mass distribution. The upper limit on the gamma d -> Lambda Theta+ integrated cross section has been calculated and found to be between 5 and 25 nb, depending on the production model assumed. The upper limit on the differential cross section is also reported.

Abstract

A search for the Theta+ in the reaction gammad --> pK-K+n was completed using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. A study of the same reaction, published earlier, reported the observation of a narrow Theta+ resonance. The present experiment, with more than 30 times the integrated luminosity of our earlier measurement, does not show any evidence for a narrow pentaquark resonance. The angle-integrated upper limit on Theta+ production in the mass range of 1.52-1.56 GeV/c2 for the gammad --> pK-Theta+ reaction is 0.3 nb (95% C.L.). This upper limit depends on assumptions made for the mass and angular distribution of Theta+ production. Using Lambda(1520) production as an empirical measure of rescattering in the deuteron, the cross section upper limit for the elementary gamman --> K-Theta+ reaction is estimated to be a factor of 10 higher, i.e., approximately 3 nb (95% C.L.).

Abstract

For the first time, the reaction gammad--DeltanK+ has been analyzed in order to search for the exotic pentaquark baryon Theta+(1540). The data were taken at Jefferson Laboratory, using the Hall-B tagged-photon beam of energy between 0.8 and 3.6 GeV and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). No statistically significant structures were observed in the nK+ invariant-mass distribution. The upper limit on the gammad--DeltaTheta+ integrated cross section has been calculated and found to be between 5 and 25 nb, depending on the production model assumed. The upper limit on the differential cross section is also reported.

Abstract

A search for the Theta+ in the reaction gammad --pK-K+n was completed using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. A study of the same reaction, published earlier, reported the observation of a narrow Theta+ resonance. The present experiment, with more than 30 times the integrated luminosity of our earlier measurement, does not show any evidence for a narrow pentaquark resonance. The angle-integrated upper limit on Theta+ production in the mass range of 1.52-1.56 GeV/c2 for the gammad --pK-Theta+ reaction is 0.3 nb (95% C.L.). This upper limit depends on assumptions made for the mass and angular distribution of Theta+ production. Using Lambda(1520) production as an empirical measure of rescattering in the deuteron, the cross section upper limit for the elementary gamman --K-Theta+ reaction is estimated to be a factor of 10 higher, i.e., approximately 3 nb (95% C.L.).

Abstract

The ratios of inclusive electron scattering cross sections of {sup 4}He, {sup 12}C, and {sup 56}Fe to {sup 3}He have been measured at 1 1.4 GeV{sup 2}, the ratios exhibit two separate plateaus, at 1.5 2.25. This pattern is predicted by models that include 2- and 3-nucleon short-range correlations (SRC). Relative to A=3, the per-nucleon probabilities of 3-nucleon SRC are 2.3, 3.1, and 4.4 times larger for A=4, 12, and 56. This is the first measurement of 3-nucleon SRC probabilities in nuclei.

The decay to nK+requires the assignment of strangeness S=+1 to any observed resonance. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 70 pb-1. No evidence for the Theta+ pentaquark was found. Upper limits were set on the production cross section as function of center-of-mass angle and nK+ mass. The 95% C.L. upper limit on the total cross section for a narrow resonance at 1540 MeV was found to be 0.8 nb.

Attenuation of second sound in helium II has been used to observe up to 6 orders of magnitude of decaying vorticity displaying four distinctly different regimes of decaying grid turbulence in a finite channel. A purely classical spectral model for homogeneous and isotropic turbulence describes most of the decay of helium II vorticity in the temperature range 1.2

We report on observations of turbulent behavior made without requiring the use of Taylor's ``frozen turbulence'' hypothesis. Initially, a towed grid generates homogeneous turbulence of grid Reynolds number of order ${10}^{5}$ within a stationary channel filled with helium II. The subsequent decay in time t of the line density of quantum vortices is measured by second sound attenuation, and the associated rms vorticity \ensuremath{\omega} follows the behavior expected of a classical fluid with \ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\sim}${\mathit{t}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}3/2}$, consistent with the notion of a coupled turbulent state of helium II. This technique also yields the time dependence of the Kolmogorov microscale.

Abstract

We show that an ion carried through an electric field by a quantized vortex ring in helium II will cause a symmetric change in the radius of the ring, even though the ion is located asymmetrically on the core of the vortex ring. The localized force on the ion will combine with a specific series of vortex waves to give a uniform growth of the ring with a small component of drift velocity perpendicular to the applied electric field. This type of energy transfer may also play an important role in superfluid turbulence. Our calculations should be valid for localized forces on thin-core classical vortices as well.

Abstract

We consider the theory of mutual friction in helium II which accounts for the coupling of the normal and superfluid flows by means of quantized vortices. Numerical simulations of roton-vortex interactions suggest a simple new expression which accounts for most mutual friction at low temperatures. By carefully separating that which can be known at the present time from that which cannot be known until the structure of quantized vortices is understood, we are able to account for mutual friction in a semiempirical way at all temperatures and pressures.

We have been investigating the behavior of thin core inviscid vortices of constant circulation in an effort to model quantized vortices in helium II. We have found that at {ital T}=0 K, Kelvin waves (standing cosine waves on vortex cores) are unstable to the buildup of sidebands. This instability is recurrent in the sense of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam phenomenon.

A transition from heat transfer by conduction directly to turbulent convective flow is observed in a rotating cryogenic B\'enard cell. Near the critical Rayleigh number the power spectra are characterized by broad features, falling off as approximately ${f}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ at high frequencies. The turbulent flow at onset is predicted as a result of the K\"uppers-Lortz instability. We report new heat-transfer measurements of this instability, complementing previous visualization experiments, and also report preliminary effects of applying white-noise modulation.

Abstract

The densities of vortex lines in He II due to rotation and axial counterflow do not simply add. With slow rotation, the critical counterflow velocity is greatly reduced. At high counterflow velocities, rotation adds fewer lines than expected, suggesting that the vortex tangle is polarized by rotation. Two critical velocities are found, the smaller of which agrees quantitatively with an explanation by Glaberson, Johnson, and Ostermeier of an instability found by Cheng, Cromar, and Donnelly.

The stability of modulated Couette flow is studied by modulation of the angular velocity, \ensuremath{\Omega}, of the inner cylinder according to \ensuremath{\Omega}=\ensuremath{\Omega}\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}[1+\ensuremath{\epsilon} cos(\ensuremath{\omega}t)], where \ensuremath{\Omega}\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} is the mean angular velocity of rotation. \ensuremath{\omega} is varied for several radius ratios, and \ensuremath{\epsilon} is varied for one radius ratio. The results are compared to earlier experimental and theoretical results.

Experimental evidence is presented which shows that couette flow has several transitions at quite low Reynolds numbers compared to the Taylor transition ($\frac{R}{{R}_{c}}\ensuremath{\approx}1$) which exhibit increased degrees of freedom, line broadening, extra broad-band noise, loss of spatial coherence, and hysteresis. The visual signature of these transitions has been identified as dislocations in the cell structure.

It is shown that vortex-line-density fluctuations in counterflowing He II can be greatly enhanced by modulating the heater with a noise generator. This technique is used to test Vinen's equation for vortex-line turbulence. Vinen's equation, linearized to describe fluctuations, appears to be correct except near the lambda transition.

Abstract

We examine experimentally the stability of a Stokes layer in a fluid near a boundary whose temperature is modulated as ${T}_{0}cos\ensuremath{\omega}t$. We define an appropriate Rayleigh number for the problem and determine its critical value. Increased stabilization is observed to accompany a reduction in the Prandtl number. We observe hysteresis effects near the critical Rayleigh number, including a double hysteresis loop, which appear qualitatively similar to recent predictions of Roppo, Davis, and Rosenblat.

Abstract

The flow of an electrically conducting fluid was studied using the rotating-cylinder viscometer technique. The device is composed of concentric cylinders immersed in mercury. The inner cylinder is driven, while a torque is transmitted to the outer cylinder until the motion due to mercury is balanced. The effective viscosity of the flujd, which is proportional to the product of the torque and the period of rotation of the inner cylinder, is measured as a function of rotational speed. This curve shows a distinct change in slope at the critical rotation rate. The experimental results are plotted in comparison with theoretical by perfectly conducting cylinders and insulating cylinders showing the relations of the critical Taylor number T/sub c/ and Q. Abstract

We report on the results of the first measurement of exclusive f_{0}(980) meson photoproduction on protons for E_{gamma}=3.0-3.8 GeV and -t=0.4-1.0 GeV2. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The resonance was detected via its decay in the pi;{+}pi;{-} channel by performing a partial wave analysis of the reaction gammap-->ppi;{+}pi;{-}. Clear evidence of the f_{0}(980) meson was found in the interference between P and S waves at M_{pi;{+}pi;{-}} approximately 1 GeV. The S-wave differential cross section integrated in the mass range of the f_{0}(980) was found to be a factor of about 50 smaller than the cross section for the rho meson. This is the first time the f_{0}(980) meson has been measured in a photoproduction experiment.

Abstract

The beam-spin asymmetries in the hard exclusive electroproduction of photons on the proton (e p-->epgamma) were measured over a wide kinematic range and with high statistical accuracy. These asymmetries result from the interference of the Bethe-Heitler process and of deeply virtual Compton scattering. Over the whole kinematic range (x(B) from 0.11 to 0.58, Q2 from 1 to 4.8 GeV2, -t from 0.09 to 1.8 GeV2), the azimuthal dependence of the asymmetries is compatible with expectations from leading-twist dominance, A approximately a sinphi/(1+c cosphi). This extensive set of data can thus be used to constrain significantly the generalized parton distributions of the nucleon in the valence quark sector.
