Abstract: We employ a continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory to predict a range of properties of the proton's radial excitation and thereby unify them with those of numerous other hadrons. Our analysis indicates that the nucleon's first radial excitation is the Roper resonance. It consists of a core of three dressed-quarks, which expresses its valence-quark content and whose charge radius is 80% larger than the proton analogue. That core is complemented by a meson cloud, which reduces the observed Roper mass by roughly 20%. The meson cloud materially affects long-wavelength characteristics of the Roper electroproduction amplitudes but the quark core is revealed to probes with $Q^2 \gtrsim 3 m_N^2$., 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: We have searched for the rare decays of the eta prime meson to e+ e- eta, e+ e- pizero, e+ e- gamma, and e mu in hadronic events at the CLEO II detector. The search is conducted on 4.80 fb^-1 of e+ e- collisions at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find no signal in any of these modes, and set 90% confidence level upper limits on their branching fractions of 2.4 X 10^-3, 1.4 X 10^-3, 0.9 X 10^-3, and 4.7 X 10^-4, respectively. We also investigate the Dalitz plot of the common decay of the eta prime to pi+ pi- eta. We fit the matrix element with the Particle Data Group parameterization and find Re(alpha) = -0.021 +- 0.025, where alpha is a linear function of the kinetic energy of the eta.

Abstract: Using 13.7 fb(-1) of data recorded by the CLEO detector at Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we report evidence of two new charmed baryons: one decaying into Xi(0')(c)pi(+) with the subsequent decay Xi(0')(c)-->Xi(0)(c)gamma, and its isospin partner decaying into Xi(+')(c)pi(-) followed by Xi(+')(c)-->Xi(+)(c)gamma. We measure the following mass differences for the two states: M(Xi(0)(c)gammapi(+))-M(Xi(0)(c)) = 318.2+/-1.3+/-2.9 MeV and M(Xi(+)(c)gammapi(-))-M(Xi(+)(c)) = 324.0+/-1.3+/-3.0 MeV. We interpret these new states as the J(P) = 1 / 2(-) Xi(c1) particles, the charmed-strange analogs of the Lambda(+)(c1)(2593).

Abstract: We present the ﬁrst measurement of the longitudinal density matrix of a matter-wave beam. Usinga unique interferometric scheme, both the amplitude and phase of off-diagonal density matrix elementswere determined directly, without the use of traditional tomographic techniques. The measureddensity matrix of a doubly amplitude modulated atomic sodium beam compares well with theoreticalpredictions.

Abstract: Using a sample of $3.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ $B$-meson decays collected with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have studied ${B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{0}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ and ${\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{+}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ decays, where ${\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ can be either ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ or ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$. We distinguish $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$ from other $B$ semileptonic decays by examining the net momentum and energy of the particles recoiling against $D\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\ell}$ pairs. We find $\ensuremath{\Gamma}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(14.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.2){\mathrm{ns}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and derive branching fractions for ${B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{0}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ and ${\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{+}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ of $(2.32\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.17\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.20)%$ and $(2.20\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.16\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.19)%$, respectively, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. We also investigate the $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$ form factor and the implication of the result for $|{V}_{\mathrm{cb}}|$.

Abstract: We have observed four fully reconstructed B{sup 0}{r_arrow}D{sup {asterisk}+}D{sup {asterisk}{minus}} candidates in 5.8{times}10{sup 6} {Upsilon}(4S){r_arrow}B{ovr B} decays recorded with the CLEO detector. The background is estimated to be 0.31{plus_minus}0.10 thinspthinspevents. The probability that the background could produce four or more signal candidates with the observed distribution among D{sup {asterisk}+} and D{sup {asterisk}{minus}} decay modes is 1.1{times}10{sup {minus}4} . Abstract: We demonstrate the absence of off-diagonal elements for the density matrix of a supersonic Na atomic beam, thus showing that there are no coherent wave packets emerging from this source. We used a differentially detuned separated oscillatory field longitudinal interferometer to search for off-diagonal density matrix elements in the longitudinal energy/momentum basis. Our study places a stringent lower bound on their possible size over an off-diagonal energy range from 0 to 100 kHz.

Abstract: We report the first observation of two narrow charmed strange baryons decaying to {Xi}{sup +}{sub c}{gamma} and {Xi}{sup 0}{sub c}{gamma} , respectively, using data from the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We interpret the observed signals as the {Xi}{sup +{prime}}{sub c}thinsp( c{l_brace}su{r_brace}) and {Xi}{sup 0{prime}}{sub c}thinsp( c{l_brace}sd{r_brace}) , the symmetric partners of the well-established antisymmetric {Xi}{sup +}{sub c}thinsp(c[ su]) and {Xi}{sup 0}{sub c}thinsp(c[ sd]) . The mass differences M({Xi}{sup +{prime}}{sub c}){minus}M( {Xi}{sup +}{sub c}) and M({Xi}{sup 0{prime}}{sub c}){minus}M( {Xi}{sup 0}{sub c}) have been measured to be 107.8{plus_minus}1.7{plus_minus}2.5 and 107.0{plus_minus}1.4{plus_minus}2.5 MeV /c{sup 2} , respectively. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society }

Abstract: The decay {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}K{sup {asterisk}{minus}}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} has been observed with the CLEOthinspthinspII detector. The K{sup {asterisk}{minus}} is reconstructed in two decay channels, K{sup {asterisk}{minus}}{r_arrow}K{sub S}{pi}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow} {pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} and K{sup {asterisk}{minus}}{r_arrow}K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup 0} . The {eta} is reconstructed from the decay {eta}{r_arrow}{gamma}{gamma} . The measured branching fraction is B({tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}K{sup {asterisk}{minus}} {eta}{nu}{sub {tau}})=(2.9{plus_minus} 0.8{plus_minus}0.4){times}10{sup {minus}4} . We also measure the inclusive branching fractions without requiring the K{sup {asterisk}} resonance, B({tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}K{sub S}{pi}{sup {minus}}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}})=(1.10 {plus_minus}0.35{plus_minus}0.11){times}10{sup {minus}4} and B({tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup 0}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}})=(1.77 {plus_minus}0.56{plus_minus}0.71){times}10{sup {minus}4} . The results indicate that the K{sup {asterisk}{minus}} resonance dominates the K{sub S}{pi}{sup {minus}} mass spectrum. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

No evidence for a signal is found in 4.77fb−1 of data and a 95% C.L. upper limit on [τγγBπ+π−]fJ(2220) of 2.5 eV is set. If this result is combined with the BES Collaboration's measurement of fJ(2220)→π+π− in radiative J/Ψ decay and the recent CLEO result for [τγγBK0SK0S]fJ(2220), a 95% C.L. lower limit on the stickiness of 102 is obtained. This result for the stickiness provides further support for a substantial neutral parton content in the fJ(2220). © 1998 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Localized oscillating fields are beam splitters that can entangle internal and longitudinal momentum states in an atomic beam. Differentially detuned separated oscillatory fields and an am modulator constitute a {open_quotes}white fringe{close_quotes} longitudinal interferometer which rephases velocity averaging by a process analogous to half a spin echo. Abstract: We report the first observation of B{r_arrow}{eta}{sup {prime}}X transitions with high momentum {eta}{sup {prime}} mesons. We observe 39.0{plus_minus}11.6 B decay events with 2.0{lt}p{sub {eta}{sup {prime}}}{lt}2.7 GeV/c , the high momentum region where background from b{r_arrow}c processes is suppressed. We discuss the physical interpretation of the signal, including the possibility that it is due to b{r_arrow}sg{sup {asterisk}} transitions. Abstract: We have searched for two-body charmless decays of B mesons to purely hadronic exclusive final states including $\omega$ or $\phi$ mesons using data collected with the CLEO II detector. With this sample of $6.6 \times 10^6$ B mesons we observe a signal for the $\omega K^+$ final state, and measure a branching fraction of B($B^+ \to \omega K^+$) = 1.5 +0.7 -0.6 +-0.2 $\times 10^{-5}$. We also observe some evidence for the $\phi K^*$ final state, and upper limits are given for 22 other decay modes. These results provide the opportunity for studies of theoretical models and physical parameters.

Abstract: We have studied semileptonic B meson decays with a p-wave charm meson in the final state using 3.29×10^6 BB events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring. We find a value for the exclusive semileptonic product branching fraction B(B^-→D_1^0l^-ν _l)B(D_1^0→D^(*+)π^-) = (0.373±0.085±0.052±0.024)% and an upper limit for B(B^-→D_2^(*0)l^-ν_l)B(D_2^(*0)→D^(*+)π^-)

Abstract: We have observed a signal for the decay D^(*+)→D^+γ at a significance of 4 standard deviations. From the measured branching ratio B(D^(*+)→D^+γ)/B(D^(*+)→D^+π^0) = 0.055±0.014±0.010 we find B(D^(*+)→D^+γ) = 0.017±0.004±0.003, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report the highest precision determination of the remaining D^(*+) branching fractions.

Abstract: In a sample of 6.6×10^6 produced B mesons we have observed decays B→η′K, with branching fractions B(B^+→η′K^+) = (6.5_(-1.4)^(+1.5)±0.9)×10^(-5) and B(B^0→η′K^0) = (4.7_(-2.0)^(+2.7)±0.9)×10^(-5). We have searched with comparable sensitivity for 17 related decays to final states containing an η or η′ meson accompanied by a single particle or low-lying resonance. Our upper limits for these constrain theoretical interpretations of the B→η′K signal.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the absolute branching fraction for D^0→K^-π^+ using the reconstruction of the decay chain B →D^(*+)Xl^-ν , D^(*+)→D^0π^+ where only the lepton and the low-momentum pion from the D^(*+) are detected. With data collected by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined B(D^0→K^-π^+) = [3.81±0.15(stat)±0.16(syst)]%.

Abstract: The decays ϒ(4S)→BB , followed by B→D^*π and D^*→Dπ, permit reconstruction of all kinematic quantities that describe the sequence without reconstruction of the D, with reasonably low backgrounds. Using an integrated e^+e^- luminosity of 3.1 fb^(-1) accumulated at the ϒ(4S) by the CLEO-II detector, we report measurements of B(B ^0→D^(*+)π^-) = (2.81±0.11±0.21±0.05)×10^(-3) and B(B-→D^*0π^-) = (4.34±0.33±0.34±0.18)×10^(-3).

Abstract: Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present the first full angular analysis in the color-suppressed modes B{sup 0}{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *0} and B{sup +}{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *+}. This leads to a complete determination of the decay amplitudes of these modes including the longitudinal polarization {Gamma}{sub L}/{Gamma}=0.52{plus_minus}0.07{plus_minus}0.04 and the P wave component {vert_bar}P{vert_bar}{sup 2}=0.16{plus_minus}0.08{plus_minus}0.04. Abstract: The decay {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}2{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup + }3{pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}} has been studied with the CLEOII detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The branching fraction is measured to be (2.85{plus_minus}0.56{plus_minus}0.51){times}10{sup {minus}4} . The result is in good agreement with the isospin expectation but somewhat below the conserved-vector-current prediction. We have searched for resonance substructure in the decay. Within the statistical precision, the decay is saturated by the channels {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup {minus}}2{pi}{sup 0 }{omega}{nu}{sub {tau}} , 2{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} , and {pi}{sup {minus}}2{pi}{sup 0}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} . This is the first observation of this {omega} decay mode and the branching fraction is measured to be (1.89{sup +0.74}{sub {minus}0.67}{plus_minus}0.40) {times}10{sup {minus}4} . {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We use the CLEO detector at the Cornell e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} storage ring, CESR, to search for the two-photon production of the glueball candidate f{sub J}(2220) in its decay to K{sub s}K{sub s} . We present a restrictive upper limit on the product of the two-photon partial width and the K{sub s}K{sub s} branching fraction, ({Gamma}{sub {gamma}{gamma}}B{sub K{sub s}K{sub s}}){sub f{sub J(2220) }} . We use this limit to calculate a lower limit on the stickiness, which is a measure of the two-gluon coupling relative to the two-photon coupling. Abstract: Using data collected in the region of the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the CLEO II detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring CESR, we present the first observation of B mesons decaying into the charmed strange baryons Xi_c0 and Xi_c+. We find 79 +/- 27 Xi_c0 and 125 +/- 28 Xi_c+ candidates from B decays, leading to product branching fractions of BR(Bbar -> Xi_c0 X)BR(Xi_c0 -> Xi- pi+) = (0.144 +/- 0.048 +/- 0.021) x 10^-3 and BR(Bbar -> Xi_c+ X)BR(Xi_c+ -> Xi- pi+ pi+) = (0.453 +/- 0.096 +0.085-0.065) x 10^-3.

Abstract: Using data collected in the region of the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance with the CLEO-II detector, they report on the first observation of exclusive decays of the B meson to final states with a charmed baryon. They have measured the branching fractions {Beta}(B{sup -} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}{pi}{sup -}) = (0.62{sub -0.20}{sup +0.23} {+-} 0.11 {+-} 0.10) x 10{sup -3} and {Beta}({bar B}{sup 0} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) = (1.33{sub -0.42}{sup +0.46} {+-} 0.31 {+-} 0.21) x 10{sup -3}. In addition, they report upper limits for final states of the form {bar B} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}(n{pi}) and {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}(n{pi}){pi}{sup 0} where (n{pi}) denotes up to four charged pions.

Abstract: Using e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} annihilation data collected by the CLEOII detector at CESR, we have observed the decay D{sup +}{sub s}{r_arrow}{omega}{pi}{sup +} . This final state may be produced through the annihilation decay of the D{sup +}{sub s} , or through final state interactions. We find a branching ratio of {Gamma}(D{sup +}{sub s}{r_arrow}{omega}{pi}{sup +})/{Gamma}(D{sup +}{sub s}{r_arrow} {eta}{pi}{sup +})=0.16{plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0 .03 , where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We have searched for lepton flavor violating decays of the {tau} lepton using final states with an electron or a muon and one or two {pi}{sup 0} or {eta} mesons but no neutrinos. The data used in the search were collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.68 fb{sup {minus}1} . No evidence for signals was found, resulting in much improved limits on the branching fractions for the one-meson modes and the first upper limits for the two-meson modes. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Using the CLEO-II data set we have searched for the Cabibbo-suppressed decays B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}D*{sup -}. For the decay B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}D*{sup -}, we observe one candidate signal event, with an expected background of 0.022 {+-} 0.011 events. This yield corresponds to a branching fraction of {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}D*{sup -}) = (5.3{sub -3.7}{sup +7.1}(stat) {+-} 1.0(syst)) x 10{sup -4} and an upper limit of {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}D{sup -}) < 2.2 x 10{sup -3} at the 90% CL. For B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup {+-}}D{sup {-+}} and B{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +}D{sup -}, no significant excess of signal above the expected background level is seen, and we calculate the 90% CL upper limits on the branching fractions to be {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup {+-}}D{sup {-+}}) < 1.8 x 10{sup -3} and B(B{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +}D{sup -}) < 1.2 x 10{sup -3}.

Abstract: We have measured the spectral shape Michel parameters ρ and η using leptonic decays of the τ, recorded by the CLEO II detector. Assuming e-μ universality in the vectorlike couplings, we find ρeμ = 0.735 ± 0.013 ± 0.008 and ηeμ = -0.015 ± 0.061 ± 0.062, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. We also present measurements for the parameters for e and μ final states separately.

Abstract: Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present new measurements of the branching fractions for D{sup +} {yields} K{sub S}K{sup +} and D{sup +} {yields} K{sub S}{pi}{sup +}. These results are combined with other CLEO measurements to extract the ratios of isospin amplitudes and phase shifts for D {yields} KK and D {yields} K{pi}.

Abstract: Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we report evidence of a pair of excited charmed baryons, one decaying into {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup +} and the other into {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup -}. The doubly charged state has a measured mass difference M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup +}) -M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}) of 234.5{plus_minus}1.1{plus_minus}0.8 MeV/c{sup 2} and a width of 17.9{sup +3.8}{sub -3.2}{plus_minus}4.0MeV/c{sup 2}, and the neutral state has a measured mass difference M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup -}) -M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}) of 232.6{plus_minus}1.0{plus_minus}0.8 MeV/c{sup 2} and a width of 13.0{sup +3.7}{sub -3.0}{plus_minus}4.0MeV/c{sup 2}. We interpret these data as evidence of the {Sigma}{sup *++}{sub c} and {Sigma}{sup *0}{sub c}, the spin (3)/(2){sup +} excitations of the {Sigma}{sub c} baryons. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: CLEO has studied $B$ decays to $\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$, $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$, and $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$, where $\ensuremath{\ell}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}eor\ensuremath{\mu}$, by incorporating the missing momentum into full $B$ reconstruction. With the ${B}^{0}$ and ${B}^{+}$ modes combined according to isospin predictions for the relative partial widths, we obtain $B({B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(1.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ and $B({B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\rho}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(2.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.4}_{\ensuremath{-}0.7}^{+0.5}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$, where the errors are statistical, systematic, and the estimated model dependence. Abstract: We use data collected by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) to search for B{sup +} {yields} h{sup +}h{sup -}h{sup +} (non-resonant) decays, where h{sup {+-}} can be either {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}} or p({bar p}). We see no evidence for signals and set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range (2.8 - 8.9) x 10{sup -5}. If observed, these decays may display CP violating asymmetries.

Abstract: Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, they report the first observation of an excited charmed baryon decaying into {Xi}{sub c}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}. The state has mass difference M({Xi}{sub c}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}) = M({Xi}{sub c}{sup 0}) of 174.3 {+-} 0.5 {+-} 1.0 MeV/c{sup 2}, and a width of < 3.1 MeV/c{sup 2} (90% confidence level limit). They identify the new state as the {Xi}*{sub c}{sup +}, the isospin partner of the recently discovered {Xi}*{sub c}{sup 0}.

Abstract: We present the first evidence for the decay {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{r_arrow}{ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} based on the observation of one event with an estimated background of 0.067{sub {minus}0.025}{sup +0.057} event. We determine the branching ratio to be {ital B}({ital K}{sub {ital L}}{r_arrow}{ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}})=(2.9{sub {minus}2.4}{sup +6.7}){times}10{sup {minus}9}. In addition, we set a 90{percent} confidence upper limit on the combined branching ratio for the lepton flavor violating decays {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{r_arrow}{ital e}{sup {minus_plus}}{ital e}{sup {minus_plus}}{mu}{sup {plus_minus}}{mu}{sup {plus_minus}} to be {ital B}({ital K}{sub {ital L}}{r_arrow}{ital e}{sup {minus_plus}}{ital e}{sup {minus_plus}}{mu}{sup {plus_minus}}{mu}{sup {plus_minus}}){lt}6.1{times}10{sup {minus}9} assuming a uniform phase space distribution. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

Abstract: The decay {tau}{sup -} {yields} K{sup -} {eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} has been observed with the CLEO II detector. The {eta} meson is reconstructed using two decay channels, {eta} {yields} {gamma}{gamma} and {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}. The measured branching fraction is B({tau}{sup -} {yields} K{sup -}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}}) = (2.6 {+-} 0.5 {+-} 0.5) x 10{sup -4}, somewhat higher than the theoretical estimates. An improved upper limit for the second-class-current decay {tau}{sup -} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} is set, B({tau}{sup -} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}}) < 1.4 x 10{sup -4} at 95% CL, consistent with the theoretical expectations.

Abstract: Using a sample of $2.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4\mathrm{S})\ensuremath{\rightarrow}B\overline{B}$ events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have measured the form factors for ${\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{*+}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$. We perform a three-parameter fit with the joint distribution of four kinematic variables to obtain the form-factor ratios ${R}_{1}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.18\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.30\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12$ and ${R}_{2}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.71\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.22\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07,$ and the form-factor slope ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{{A}_{1}}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.91\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06,$ which is closely related to the slope of the Isgur-Wise function. The form-factor ratios are consistent with predicted corrections to the heavy-quark symmetry limit ${R}_{1}{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}R}_{2}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1$.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have searched for flavor changing neutral currents and lepton family number violations in D^0 meson decays. The upper limits on the branching fractions for D^0→l^+l^- and D^0→X^0l^+l^- are in the range 10^(-5) to 10^(-4), where X^0 can be a π^0, K_s^0, η, ρ^0, ω, K^(*0), or φ meson, and the l^+l^- pair can be e^+e^-, μ^+μ^-, or e^±μ^∓. Although these limits are above the theoretical predictions, most are new or an order of magnitude lower than previous limits.

Abstract: We have used the CLEO II detector and 2.06fb^(-1) of ϒ(4S) data to measure the B-meson semileptonic branching fraction. The B→Xeν momentum spectrum was obtained over nearly the full momentum range by using charge and kinematic correlations in events with a high-momentum lepton tag and an additional electron. We find B(B→Xeν) = (10.49±0.17±0.43)%, with overall systematic uncertainties less than those of untagged single-lepton measurements. We use this result to calculate the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V_(cb) and to set an upper limit on the fraction of ϒ(4S) decays to final states other than BB .

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector we measure B(D s + Ⅵηe + ν)/B(D s + Ⅵφe + ν)=1.24±0.12±0.15, B(D s + Ⅵη ′ e + ν)/B(D s + Ⅵφe + ν)=0.43±0.11±0.07, and B(D s + Ⅵη ′ e + ν)/B(D s + Ⅵηe + ν)=0.35±0.09±0.07. We find the ratio of vector to pseudoscalar final states, B(D s + Ⅵφe + ν)/B(D s + Ⅵ(η+η ′ )e + ν)=0.60±0.06±0.06, which is similar to the ratio found in nonstrange D decays.

Abstract: We use a data sample of 2.8{times}10{sup 6} produced {tau}-pair events, obtained with the CLEO II detector, to measure {ital B}{bold (}{tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{ital h}{sup {minus}}{ital h}{sup +}{ital h}{sup {minus}}({pi}{sup 0}){nu}{sub {tau}}{bold )}, where {ital h} refers to either a charged {pi} or {ital K}. These branching fractions are measured with samples of lepton-tagged and 3 vs 3 events. We find {ital B}({tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{ital h}{sup {minus}}{ital h}{sup +}{ital h}{sup {minus}}{nu}{sub {tau}})=0.0951{plus_minus}0.0007 m*0.0020 and {ital B}({tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{ital h}{sup {minus}}{ital h}{sup +}{ital h}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}})=0.0423{plus_minus} .0006{plus_minus}0.0022. Abstract: Using data collected with the CLEO II detector, we have observed the isospin-violating decay {ital D}{sub {ital s}}{sup *+}{r_arrow}{ital D}{sup +}{sub {ital s}}{pi}{sup 0}. The decay rate for this mode, relative to the dominant radiative decay, is found to be {Gamma}({ital D}{sub {ital s}}{sup *+}{r_arrow}{ital D}{sup +}{sub {ital s}}{pi}{sup 0}) /{Gamma}({ital D}{sub {ital s}}{sup *+}{r_arrow}{ital D}{sup +}{ital s}{gamma}) =0.062{sub {minus}0.018}{sup +0.020}{plus_minus}0.022. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital The} {ital American} {ital Physical} {ital Society}.

Abstract: We report on a measurement of the decay {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}{gamma} from Fermilab experiment E799. We observe 207 candidate signal events with an estimated background of 10.5{plus_minus}4.0 events and establish {ital B}({ital K}{sub {ital L}}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}{gamma})=[3.23{plus_minus}0.23(stat){plus_minus}0.19(syst)]{times}10{sup {minus}7}. This provides the first measurement of the {ital K}{gamma}{gamma}{sup *} form factor in the muonic Dalitz decay mode of the {ital K}{sub {ital L}}.

Abstract: We have determined the branching ratio of [ital K][sub [ital L]][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]][ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]] based on the observation of 27 four-electron final state events with 0.36 estimated background event, [ital B]([ital K][sub [ital L]][r arrow][ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]][ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]]) =[3.96[plus minus]0.78(stat)[plus minus]0.32(syst)][times]10[sup [minus]8]. Using the distribution of the angle between the [ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]] pair decay planes, we find that the decay proceeds predominantly through the [ital K][sub 2]([ital CP]=[minus]1) state.

Abstract: We introduce a method based on the chiral susceptibility, which enables one to draw a phase diagram in the chemical-potential/temperature plane for strongly-interacting quarks whose interactions are described by any reasonable gap equation, even if the diagrammatic content of the quark-gluon vertex is unknown. We locate a critical endpoint (CEP) at (\mu^E,T^E) ~ (1.0,0.9)T_c, where T_c is the critical temperature for chiral symmetry restoration at \mu=0; and find that a domain of phase coexistence opens at the CEP whose area increases as a confinement length-scale grows., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: We report the results of a search for the decay [ital K][sub [ital L]][r arrow][pi][sup 0][ital e+][ital e[minus]] conducted by E799 at Fermilab. The largest contribution to this decay mode is expected to be [ital CP] violating. Observations of this decay could either confirm the standard model mechanisms for [ital CP] violation or point to physics beyond the standard model. No such events were seen in our search. The 90% confidence level upper limit is determined to be [ital B]([ital K][sub [ital L]][r arrow][pi][sup 0][ital e+][ital e[minus]])[lt]4.3[times]10[sup [minus]9].

Abstract: The Fermilab E799 Collaboration has carried out a search for the rare decay ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ using ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$'s produced from ${\mathit{K}}_{\mathit{L}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$ decays in flight. We observe a signal of nine events with an ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ mass close to the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$ mass where only one event is predicted from other known processes. From this, we measure B(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$,(${\mathit{m}}_{\mathit{e}\mathit{e}}$/${\mathit{m}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$${)}^{2}$\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.95) =[7.${6}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2.8}^{+3.9}$(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5(syst)]\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}8}$, over and above the contribution from ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$ Dalitz decays. Correcting for radiative effects, we find this result consistent with theoretical expectations from standard-model processes.

Abstract: An exact form is presented for the axial-vector Bethe-Salpeter equation, which is valid when the quark-gluon vertex is fully dressed. A Ward-Takahashi identity for the Bethe-Salpeter kernel is derived therefrom and solved for a class of dressed quark-gluon vertex models. The solution provides a symmetry-preserving closed system of gap and vertex equations. The analysis can be extended to the vector equation. This enables a comparison between the responses of pseudoscalar- and scalar meson masses to nonperturbatively dressing the quark-gluon vertex. The result indicates that dynamical chiral symmetry breaking enhances spin-orbit splitting in the meson spectrum., 4 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

Abstract: We search for the factorization-suppressed decays B--chi(c0)K(*) and B--chi(c2)K(*), with chi(c0) and chi(c2) decaying into J/psi gamma, using a sample of 124 x 10(6) BB events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We find no significant signal and set upper bounds for the branching fractions.
