Using combined theoretical and experimental approaches, we demonstrate that the bond orientation of water at the water-vapor interface depends markedly on the water isotope (H-D) composition. While the interfacial water structures of H2O and D2O are indistinguishable, the intramolecular symmetry breaking in HDO is directly reflected at the surface: the OD bonds preferably orient down towards the bulk water, whereas the OH bond tends to orient up into the vapor phase. Path integral molecular dynamics simulations show good agreement with surface-specific sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy results, revealing that the distinct interfacial bond orientations originate from nuclear quantum effects. The enhanced localization of the heavier D atom leads to stronger hydrogen bonds, giving rise to OD bonds pointing down into the bulk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the real-time measurement of the ultrafast reorientational motion of water molecules at the water-air interface, using femtosecond time- and polarization-resolved vibrational sum-frequency spectroscopy. Vibrational excitation of dangling OH bonds along a specific polarization axis induces a transient anisotropy that decays due to the reorientation of vibrationally excited OH groups. The reorientation of interfacial water is shown to occur on subpicosecond time scales, several times faster than in the bulk, which can be attributed to the lower degree of hydrogen bond coordination at the interface. Molecular dynamics simulations of interfacial water dynamics are in quantitative agreement with experimental observations and show that, unlike in bulk, the interfacial reorientation occurs in a largely diffusive manner. The orientational distribution of free O-H (O-D) groups at the H2O- (D2O-)air interface is investigated using combined molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and sum-frequency generation (SFG) experiments. The average angle of the free O-H groups, relative to the surface normal, is found to be ~63°, substantially larger than previous estimates of 30°-40°. This discrepancy can be traced to erroneously assumed Gaussian or stepwise orientational distributions of free O-H groups. Instead, the MD simulation and SFG measurement reveal a broad and exponentially decaying orientational distribution. The broad orientational distribution indicates the presence of the free O-H group pointing down to the bulk. Phase-resolved sum-frequency generation measurements combined with molecular dynamics simulations are employed to study the effect of temperature on the molecular arrangement of water on the basal face of ice. The topmost monolayer, interrogated through its nonhydrogen-bonded, free O-H stretch peak, exhibits a maximum in surface H-bond density around 200 K. This maximum results from two competing effects: above 200 K, thermal fluctuations cause the breaking of H bonds; below 200 K, the formation of bulklike crystalline interfacial structures leads to H-bond breaking. Knowledge of the surface structure of ice is critical for understanding reactions occurring on ice surfaces and ice nucleation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vibrational coupling between interfacial water molecules is important for energy dissipation after on-water chemistry, yet intensely debated. Here, we quantify the interfacial vibrational coupling strength through the linewidth of surface-specific vibrational spectra of the water's O─H (O─D) stretch region for neat H_{2}O/D_{2}O and their isotopic mixtures. The local-field-effect-corrected experimental SFG spectra reveal that the vibrational coupling between hydrogen-bonded interfacial water O─H groups is comparable to that in bulk water, despite the effective density reduction at the interface.

Capillary adhesion due to water adsorption from the air can contribute to friction, especially for smooth interfaces in humid environments. We show that for multiasperity (naturally oxidized) Si-on-Si interfaces, the friction coefficient goes through a maximum as a function of relative humidity. An adhesion model based on the boundary element method that takes the roughness of the interfaces into account reproduces this nonmonotonic behavior very well. Remarkably, we find the dry friction to be significantly lower than the lubricated friction with macroscopic amounts of water present. The difference is attributed to the hydrogen-bonding network across the interface. Accordingly, the lubricated friction increases significantly if the water is replaced by heavy water (D_{2}O) with stronger hydrogen bonding.

The three-dimensional spatial distribution of molecules at soft matter interfaces is crucial for processes ranging from membrane biophysics to atmospheric chemistry. While several techniques can access surface composition, obtaining information on the depth distribution is challenging. We develop a noninvasive, polarization-resolved, surface-specific sum-frequency generation spectroscopy providing quantitative depth information. We demonstrate the technique on formic acid molecules at the air-water interface. With increasing molar fraction from 2.5% to 10%, the formic acid molecules shift, on average, ∼0.9  Å into the bulk. The consistency with the simulation data manifests that the technique allows for probing the Ångstrom-scale depth profile.

Evaporation is the process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas or vapor, and is a key step in Earth's water cycle. At the molecular level, evaporation requires breaking at least one very strong intermolecular bond between two water molecules at the interface. Despite the importance of this process the molecular mechanism by which an evaporating water molecule gains sufficient energy to escape from the surface has remained elusive. Here, we show, using molecular dynamics simulations at the water-air interface with polarizable classical force field models, that the high kinetic energy of the evaporated water molecule is enabled by a well-timed making and breaking of hydrogen bonds involving at least three water molecules at the interface, the recoil of which allows one of the molecules to escape. The evaporation of water is thus enabled by concerted, ultrafast hydrogen-bond dynamics of interfacial water, and follows one specific molecular pathway.

Using the surface-specific vibrational technique of vibrational sum-frequency generation, we reveal that the double-peaked structure in the vibrational spectrum of hydrogen-bonded interfacial water molecules originates from vibrational coupling between the stretch and bending overtone, rather than from structural effects. This is demonstrated by isotopic dilution experiments, which reveal a smooth transition from two peaks to one peak, as D2O is converted into HDO. Our results show that the water interface is structurally more homogeneous than previously thought.

We report a femtosecond time-resolved study of water at the neat water-air interface. The O-H stretch vibrational lifetime of hydrogen-bonded interfacial water is measured using surface-specific 4th-order nonlinear optical spectroscopy with femtosecond infrared pulses. The vibrational lifetime in the frequency range of 3200 to 3500 cm(-1) is found to closely resemble that of bulk water, indicating ultrafast exchange of vibrational energy between surface water molecules and those in the bulk.

We demonstrate that the crystallization of thin, supported amorphous solid water layers is initiated at the water surface. This is concluded from the observation of sequential crystallization of amorphous water at the surface, in the bulk, and at the water-support interface. A surface nucleation model quantitatively reproduces the observed transformation kinetics at the three sites.

A novel application of vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) is developed to study the molecular properties of the surface of submicron particles in suspension. The Rayleigh-Gans-Debye scattering theory is extended to extract the local molecular response from the macroscopic nonlinearly scattered spectral intensity. These results demonstrate the use of VSFG to investigate quantitatively the surface molecular properties of submicron particles, dispersed in solution. It provides information on the order and density of alkane chains and allows us to determine the elements of the local second-order surface susceptibility.

Electron transport of photoexcited single-crystal sapphire (alpha-Al2O3) is characterized by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The complex conductivity displays a Drude-type frequency dependence, which yields carrier scattering rates and densities. Carrier scattering is dominated by interactions with acoustical and optical phonons at low and high temperatures, respectively, and follows Matthiessen's law over the measured temperature range of 40-350 K. The results, including low-temperature mobilities >10000 cm(2)/V s, are compatible with a large-polaron description of the conduction electrons.

The phase behavior of a biomimetic monolayer consisting of diphospholipid molecules on water is investigated using vibrational sum-frequency generation and fluorescence microscopy. In addition to the transition from the-molecularly disordered-liquid phase to the highly ordered and oriented con-densed phase, a novel, extremely sharp transition is observed at low compression, which is attributed to the uncurling of the hydrophobic alkane chains upon compression.
