Abstract: The K2K experiment observes indications of neutrino oscillation: a reduction of $\nu_\mu$ flux together with a distortion of the energy spectrum. Fifty-six beam neutrino events are observed in Super-Kamiokande (SK), 250 km from the neutrino production point, with an expectation of $80.1^{+6.2}_{-5.4}$. Twenty-nine one ring $\mu$-like events are used to reconstruct the neutrino energy spectrum, which is better matched to the expected spectrum with neutrino oscillation than without. Abstract: Phase transition in its strict sense can only be observed in an infinite system, for which equilibration takes an infinitely long time at criticality. In numerical simulations, we are often limited both by the finiteness of the system size and by the finiteness of the observation time scale. We propose that one can overcome this barrier by measuring the nonequilibrium temporal relaxation for finite systems and by applying the finite-time-finite-size scaling (FTFSS) which systematically uses two scaling variables, one temporal and the other spatial. The FTFSS method yields a smooth scaling surface, and the conventional finite-size scaling curves can be viewed as proper cross sections of the surface. The validity of our FTFSS method is tested for the synchronization transition of Kuramoto models in the globally-coupled structure and in the small-world network structure. Abstract: We have measured the ratio of prompt production rates of the charmonium states {chi}{sub c1} and {chi}{sub c2} in 110 pb{sup -1} of p{ovr p} collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV. The photon from their decay into J/{psi}{gamma} is reconstructed through conversion into e{sup +}e{sup -} pairs. The energy resolution this technique provides makes the resolution of the two states possible. We find the ratio of production cross sections {sigma}{sub {chi}{sub c2}}/{sigma}{sub {chi}{sub c1}} = 0.96{+-}0.27(stat){+-}0.11(syst) for events with p{sub {tau}}(J/{psi})>4.0 GeV/c, |{eta}(J/{psi})| 1.0 GeV/c.

Abstract: We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions R equivalent to B(t --> Wb)/B(t --> Wq) from pa collisions at roots = 1.8 TeV. The data set corresponds to 109 pb(-1) of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1992-95 Tevatron run. We measure R = 0.94(-0.24)(+0.31)(stat + syst) or R > 0.61 (0.56) at 90% (95)% C.L., in agreement with the standard model predictions. This measurement yields a limit on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix element \V-tb\ under the assumption of three generations and unitarity.

5. Intrinsic Finite-Size Effects in the Two-DimensionalXYModel with Irrational Frustration

Abstract: This study investigates in detail the finite-size scaling of the two-dimensional irrationally frustrated XY model. By means of Monte Carlo simulations with entropic sampling, we examine the size dependence of the specific heat, and find remarkable deviation from the conventional finite-size scaling theory, which reveals novel intrinsic finite-size effects. Relaxation dynamics of the system is also considered, and, correspondingly, finite-size scaling of the relaxation time is examined, again giving evidence for the intrinsic finite-size effects and suggesting a zero-temperature glass transition.

Abstract: We have measured the polarization of J/psi and psi(2S) mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV, using data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992-1995. The polarization of promptly produced J/psi [psi(2S)] mesons is isolated from those produced in B-hadron decay, and measured over the kinematic range 4 [5.5]

Abstract: We report the results of a search for second and third generation leptoquarks using 88 pb{sup -1} of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Color triplet technipions, which play the role of scalar leptoquarks, are investigated due to their potential production in decays of strongly coupled color octet technirhos. Events with a signature of two heavy flavor jets and missing energy may indicate the decay of a second (third) generation leptoquark to a charm (bottom) quark and a neutrino. As the data are found to be consistent with standard model expectations, mass limits are determined.

Abstract: We have searched for direct production of scalar top quarks at the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 88 pb{sup -1} of pp collisions at {radical}(s)=1.8 TeV . We assume the scalar top quark decays into either a bottom quark and a chargino or a bottom quark, a lepton, and a scalar neutrino. The event signature for both decay scenarios is a lepton, missing transverse energy, and at least two b -quark jets. For a chargino mass of 90 GeV/c{sup 2} and scalar neutrino masses of at least 40 GeV/c{sup 2} , we find no evidence for scalar top production and present upper limits on the production cross section in both decay scenarios. Abstract: We report results from a study of events with a leading antiproton of beam momentum fraction 0.905 7 GeV. Using the dijet events, we evaluate the diffractive structure function of the antiproton and compare it with expectations based on results obtained in diffractive deep inelastic scattering experiments at the DESY ep collider HERA.

Abstract: We search for color singlet technirho and technipion production in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.8\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{TeV}$ recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. These exotic technimesons are present in a model of walking technicolor. The signatures studied are lepton plus two jets plus ${E}_{T}$ and multijet final states. No excess of events is seen in either final state. We set an upper limit on the technirho production cross section and exclude a region in the technipion mass versus technirho mass plane.

Abstract: We update the measurement of the t (t) over bar production cross section using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. This measurement uses t (t) over bar decays to the final states e + nu + jets and mu + nu + jets. We search for b quarks from t decays via secondary-vertex identification or the identification of semileptonic decays of the b and cascade c quarks. The background to the t (t) over bar production is determined primarily through a Monte Carlo simulation. However, we calibrate the simulation and evaluate its uncertainty using several independent data samples. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV/c(2), we measure sigma (t (t) over bar)-=5.1 +/- 1.5 pb and sigma (t (t) over bar)=9.2 +/- 4.3 pb using the secondary vertex and the lepton tagging algorithms, respectively. Finally, we combine these results with those from other t (t) over bar decay channels and obtain sigma (t (t) over bar)-= 6.5 (+1.7)(-1.4)pb.

15. Dynamics and directionality in complex networks

Abstract: We investigate how we can improve the synchronizability of complex networks simply by changing the link direction while conserving the local link weights and topology. Performing the linear stability analysis of synchronization and numerical simulation of the Kuramoto model in the directed networks, we find that while a random assignment of link directions generally weakens the degree of synchronization, a properly organized directionality can systematically enhance the network synchronization. In this respect, we suggest a simple method of changing the link direction according to the larger residual degree starting from small residual degree nodes. This result provides plausible applications to control the synchronizability of systems in various fields.

Abstract: We investigated electronic structure of hexagonal multiferroic YMnO3 using the polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at O K and Mn L(2,3) edges. The spectra exhibit strong polarization dependence at both edges, reflecting anisotropic Mn 3d orbital occupation. Moreover, the O K edge spectra show that Y 4d states are strongly hybridized with O 2p ones, resulting in large anomalies in Born effective charges on off-centering Y and O ions. These results manifest that the Y d(0)-ness with rehybridization is the driving force for the ferroelectricity, and suggest a new approach to understand the multiferroicity in the hexagonal manganites.

Abstract: The observation of a state consistent with X(3872) decaying into J/ψπ+π- was reported. The X(3872) mass was measured to be 3871.3±0.7(stat)±0.4(syst)MeV/c2 from a sample of 730±90 candidates. The observed width was consistent with the detector resolution. The results were found to be converging well with the measurements by the Belle Collaboration using b± decays.

Abstract: We present a search for electron neutrino appearance from accelerator produced muon neutrinos in the K2K long baseline neutrino experiment. One candidate event is found in the data corresponding to an exposure of 4.8*10^19 protons on target. The expected background in the absence of neutrino oscillations is estimated to be 2.4+-0.6 events and is dominated by mis-identification of events from neutral current pi^0 production. We exclude the \nu_\mu to \nu_e oscillations at 90% C.L. for the effective mixing angle in 2-flavor approximation of sin^2(2theta_\mu_e) (~= 1/2 sin^2 2 th_13) > 0.15 at Delta m^2_\mu_e = 2.8*10^{-3} eV^2, the best fit value of the \nu_\mu disappearance analysis in K2K. The most stringent limit of sin^2(2theta_\mu_e) < 0.09 is obtained at Delta m^2_\mu_e = 6*10^{-3} eV^2., Comment: 5 pages with 2 figures embeded in two column revtex4 style. Abstract: The search for pair production of scalar top quarks in an R-parity violating supersymmetry scenario in 106 pb-f of pp collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab was discussed. It was found that in this mode each t1 decayed into a τ lepton and a b quark. The events with two τ's, one decaying leptonically and one decaying hadronically and two jets were searched. It was observed that a 95% confidence level lower limit was set on the t 1 mass at 122 GeV/c2 for Br(t1 → τb).

Abstract: We have searched for pair production of the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (stop) in 107 pb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at roots=1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Each stop is assumed to decay into a lepton, bottom quark, and supersymmetric neutrino. Such a scenario would give rise to events with two leptons, two hadronic jets, and a substantial imbalance of transverse energy. No evidence of such a stop signal has been found. We exclude stop masses in the region (80less than or equal tom((t) over bar)less than or equal to135 GeV/c(2)) in the mass plane of stop versus sneutrino.

Abstract: The main focus of this thesis lies on the critical properties of twodimensional (2D) superconductors in zero magnetic field. Simulations based on variants of the 2D XY model are shown to give characteristic features close to the phase transition which agree qualitatively with experimental data. Thus, it is concluded that these common characteristic features are caused by two-dimensional vortices.The thesis consists of an introductory part and five separate publications. In the introductory part of the thesis the basic results of the Ginzburg-Landau model, which gives a phenomenological description of superconductors, are described. In 2D systems, the superconductive phase transition in the absence of a magnetic field is governed by the unbinding of thermally created vortices and is called the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase transition. An introduction to this kind of transition is given. The important features of the current-voltage (IV) characteristics and the nonlinear conductivity, which can be used to study the KT transition, are discussed. The scaling analysis procedure, a powerful tool for the analysis of the properties of a system in the vicinity of phase transition, is reviewed. A scaling form for the nonlinear dc conductivity, which takes into account finite-size e ects, is discussed.The static 2D XY model, which is usually used to describe superfluids, superconducting films as well as the high-Tc superconductors with high anisotropy, is introduced. Three different types of dynamic models, namely resistively shunted junction, relaxational, and Monte Carlo dynamics are superimposed on the 2D XY model for the evaluation of the dynamic properties. TheVillain model and a modifiedXY model using a p-type interaction potential exhibit different densities of the thermally created vortices. Since the dominant characteristic physical features close to the KT transition are associated with vortex pair fluctuations these two models are investigated.The introductory part closes with a short introduction to each of the five published articles.

Abstract: We present searches for quark-lepton compositeness and a heavy W' boson at high electron-neutrino transverse mass. We use {approx}110 pb{sup -1} of data collected in p{bar p} collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV by the CDF Collaboration during 1992-1995. The data are consistent with standard model expectations. Limits are set on the quark-lepton compositeness scale {Lambda}, the ratio of partial cross sections {sigma}(W'{yields}e{nu})/{sigma}(W{yields}e{nu}), and the mass of a W' boson with standard model couplings. We exclude {Lambda}

Abstract: The dynamic critical exponent $z$ is determined from numerical simulations for the three-dimensional (3D) lattice Coulomb gas (LCG) and the 3D XY models with relaxational dynamics. It is suggested that the dynamics is characterized by two distinct dynamic critical indices $z_0$ and $z$ related to the divergence of the relaxation time $\tau$ by $\tau\propto \xi^{z_0}$ and $\tau\propto k^{-z}$, where $\xi$ is the correlation length and $k$ the wavevector. The values determined are $z_0\approx 1.5$ and $z\approx 1$ for the 3D LCG and $z_0\approx 1.5$ and $z\approx 2$ for the 3D XY model. It is argued that the nonlinear $IV$ exponent relates to $z_0$, whereas the usual Hohenberg-Halperin classification relates to $z$. Abstract: Phase transition in its strict sense can only be observed in an infinite system, for which equilibration takes an infinitely long time at criticality. In numerical simulations, we are often limited both by the finiteness of the system size and by the finiteness of the observation time scale. We propose that one can overcome this barrier by measuring the nonequilibrium temporal relaxation for finite systems and by applying the finite-time-fmite-size scaling (FTFSS) which systematically uses two scaling variables, one temporal and the other spatial. The FTFSS method yields a smooth scaling surface, and the conventional finite-size scaling curves can be viewed as proper cross sections of the surface. The validity of our FTFSS method is tested for the synchronization transition of Kuramoto models in the globally coupled structure and in the small-world network structure. Our FTFSS method is also applied to the Monte Carlo dynamics of the globally coupled g-state clock model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
