A rotation sensor is one of the key elements of inertial navigation systems and compliments most cell phone sensor sets used for various applications. Currently, inexpensive and efficient solutions are mechanoelectronic devices, which nevertheless lack long-term stability. Realization of rotation sensors based on spins of fundamental particles may become a drift-free alternative to such devices. Here, we carry out a proof-of-concept experiment, demonstrating rotation measurements on a rotating setup utilizing nuclear spins of an ensemble of nitrogen vacancy centers as a sensing element with no stationary reference. The measurement is verified by a commercially available microelectromechanical system gyroscope.

We report new precision measurements of the lifetimes of the {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c} and D{sup 0} from SELEX, the charm hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab. Based upon 1630 {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c} and 10210 D{sup 0} decays we observe lifetimes of {tau}[{Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}]=198.1{+-} 7.0{+-}5.6 fs and {tau}[D{sup 0}]=407.9{+-}6.0{+-}4 .3 fs .

We present results for the charged-particle multiplicity distribution at midrapidity in Au-Au collisions at square root of [s(NN)] = 130 GeV measured with the PHENIX detector at RHIC. For the 5% most central collisions we find dN(ch)/d eta(vertical line eta = 0) = 622+/-1(stat)+/-41(syst). The results, analyzed as a function of centrality, show a steady rise of the particle density per participating nucleon with centrality.

We report the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed charm baryon decay Xi(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+). We observe 150+/-22+/-5 events for the signal. The data were accumulated using the SELEX spectrometer during the 1996-1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, chiefly from a 600 GeV/c Sigma(-) beam. The branching fractions of the decay relative to the Cabibbo-favored Xi(+)(c)-->Sigma+K-pi(+) and Xi(+)(c)-->Xi(-)pi(+)pi(+) are measured to be B(Xi(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+))/B(Xi(+)(c)-->Sigma+K-pi(+)) = 0.22+/-0. 06+/-0.03 and B(Xi(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+))/B(Xi(+)(c)-->Xi(-)pi(+)pi(+)) = 0.20+/-0.04+/-0.02, respectively.

Differential cross sections for p- ${}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and p- ${}^{8}\mathrm{He}$ elastic scattering have been measured in inverse kinematics at small momentum transfers up to $|t|\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.05(\mathrm{GeV}/c{)}^{2}$ and projectile energies of about 700 MeV/nucleon. Nuclear matter densities deduced from the data are consistent with the concept that ${}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and ${}^{8}\mathrm{He}$ nuclei have an $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-like core and a significant neutron skin. The rms radii of the nuclear matter distributions were determined to be ${R}_{m}$ ${(}^{6}\mathrm{He})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}2.30\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07\mathrm{fm}$ and ${R}_{m}$ ${(}^{8}\mathrm{He})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}2.45\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07\mathrm{fm}$.

The MuCap experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute has measured the rate L_S of muon capture from the singlet state of the muonic hydrogen atom to a precision of 1%. A muon beam was stopped in a time projection chamber filled with 10-bar, ultra-pure hydrogen gas. Cylindrical wire chambers and a segmented scintillator barrel detected electrons from muon decay. L_S is determined from the difference between the mu- disappearance rate in hydrogen and the free muon decay rate. The result is based on the analysis of 1.2 10^10 mu- decays, from which we extract the capture rate L_S = (714.9 +- 5.4(stat) +- 5.1(syst)) s^-1 and derive the proton's pseudoscalar coupling g_P(q^2_0 = -0.88 m^2_mu) = 8.06 +- 0.55., Comment: Updated figure 1 and small changes in wording to match published version

We have measured the branching ratio for the hyperon radiative decay [Xi][sup [minus]][r arrow][Sigma][sup [minus]][gamma] from a sample of 211[plus minus]33 events obtained in the polarized 375 GeV/[ital c] charged hyperon beam at Fermilab. We find [ital B]([Xi][sup [minus]][r arrow][Sigma][sup [minus]][gamma]/[Xi][sup [minus]][r arrow][Lambda][sup 0][pi][sup [minus]])=(1.22[plus minus]0.23[plus minus]0.06)[times]10[sup [minus]4] where the quoted errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. We have also obtained an indication that the sign of the asymmetry parameter of this decay is positive.

We have measured the magnetic moments of the SIGMA+ and SIGMABAR- hyperons produced by 800-GeV protons incident on a Cu target. We determine the SIGMA+ magnetic moment to be (2.4613 +/- 0.0034 +/- 0.0040)mu(N) where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. In this first measurement we determine the magnetic moment of the SIGMABAR- to be -(2.428 +/- 0.036 +/- 0.007)mu(N). The magnetic moments of the SIGMA+ and SIGMABAR- are consistent with each other in magnitude but opposite in sign as required by CPT invariance.

We have measured the polarization of 375-GeV/c SIGMA+ and SIGMABAR- hyperons produced by 800-GeV/c protons incident on a Cu target. We find that the SIGMA+ polarization rises with increasing p(t) to a maximum of 16% at p(t) = 1.0 GeV/c and then decreases to 10% at p(t) = 1.8 GeV/c. We compare this SIGMA+ polarization with data at lower energies. The SIGMABAR- polarization has been measured for the first time. It has the same sign as the SIGMA+ but smaller magnitude in a similar kinematical region.

Spin precession of channeled particles in bent crystals has been observed for the first time. Polarized SIGMA+ were channeled using bent Si crystals. These crystals provided an effective magnetic field of 45 T which resulted in a measured spin precession of 60-degrees +/- 17-degrees. This agrees with the prediction of 62-degrees +/- 2-degrees using the world average of SIGMA+ magnetic moment measurements. This new technique gives a SIGMA+ magnetic moment of (2.40 +/- 0.46 +/- 0.40),mu(N), where the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. We see no evidence of depolarization in the channeling process.

We have measured the asymmetry parameter (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$) in the hyperon radiative decay ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p\ensuremath{\gamma} with a sample of 34 754\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}212 events obtained in a polarized charged hyperon beam experiment at Fermilab. We find ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$=-0.720\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.086\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.045, where the quoted errors are statistical and systematic, respectively.

The rate of nuclear muon capture by the proton has been measured using a new experimental technique based on a time projection chamber operating in ultra-clean, deuterium-depleted hydrogen gas at 1 MPa pressure. The capture rate was obtained from the dierence between the measured disappearance rate in hydrogen and the world average for the + decay rate. The target’s low gas density of 1% compared to liquid hydrogen is key to avoiding uncertainties that arise from the formation of muonic molecules. The capture rate from the hyperne singlet ground state of the p atom is measured to be S = 725:0 17:4 s 1 , from which the induced pseudoscalar coupling of the nucleon, g P (q 2 = 0:88m 2 ) = 7:3 1:1, is extracted. This result is consistent with theoretical predictions for gP that are based on the approximate chiral symmetry of QCD.

We report the first observation of a charm-strange meson D(+)(sJ)(2632) at a mass of 2632.5+/-1.7 MeV/c(2) in data from SELEX, the charm hadro-production experiment E781 at Fermilab. This state is seen in two decay modes, D(+)(s)eta and D0K+. In the D(+)(s)eta decay mode we observe a peak with 101 events over a combinatoric background of 54.9 events at a mass of 2635.4+/-3.3 MeV/c(2). There is a corresponding peak of 21 events over a background of 6.9 at 2631.5+/-2.0 MeV/c(2) in the decay mode D0K+. The decay width of this state is

Two-particle azimuthal correlation functions are presented for charged hadrons produced in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (sqrt[sNN]=130 GeV). The measurements permit determination of elliptic flow without event-by-event estimation of the reaction plane. The extracted elliptic flow values (v2) show significant sensitivity to both the collision centrality and the transverse momenta of emitted hadrons, suggesting rapid thermalization and relatively strong velocity fields. When scaled by the eccentricity of the collision zone e, the scaled elliptic flow shows little or no dependence on centrality for charged hadrons with relatively low pT. A breakdown of this e scaling is observed for charged hadrons with pT >1.0 GeV/c.

We observe a signal for the doubly charmed baryon Xi(+)(cc) in the charged decay mode Xi(+)(cc)-->Lambda(+)(c)K-pi(+) in data from SELEX, the charm hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab. We observe an excess of 15.9 events over an expected background of 6.1+/-0.5 events, a statistical significance of 6.3sigma. The observed mass of this state is 3519+/-1 MeV/c(2). The Gaussian mass width of this state is 3 MeV/c(2), consistent with resolution; its lifetime is less than 33 fs at 90% confidence.

Data from Au+ Au interactions at s(NN)=130 GeV, obtained with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, are used to investigate local net charge fluctuations among particles produced near midrapidity. According to recent suggestions, such fluctuations may carry information from the quark-gluon plasma. This analysis shows that the fluctuations are dominated by a stochastic distribution of particles, but are also sensitive to other effects, like global charge conservation and resonance decays.

- Abstract
We observe a signal for the doubly charmed baryon Xi(+)(cc) in the charged decay mode Xi(+)(cc)--Lambda(+)(c)K-pi(+) in data from SELEX, the charm hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab. We observe an excess of 15.9 events over an expected background of 6.1+/-0.5 events, a statistical significance of 6.3sigma. The observed mass of this state is 3519+/-1 MeV/c(2). The Gaussian mass width of this state is 3 MeV/c(2), consistent with resolution; its lifetime is less than 33 fs at 90% confidence.

Identified ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+/\ensuremath{-}}$, ${K}^{+/\ensuremath{-}}$, $p$, and $\overline{p}$ transverse momentum spectra at midrapidity in $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathrm{NN}}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}130\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{Au}+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions were measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC as a function of collision centrality. Average transverse momenta increase with the number of participating nucleons in a similar way for all particle species. Within errors, all midrapidity particle yields per participant are found to be increasing with the number of participating nucleons. There is an indication that ${K}^{+/\ensuremath{-}}$, $p$, and $\overline{p}$ yields per participant increase faster than the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+/\ensuremath{-}}$ yields. In central collisions at high transverse momenta $({p}_{T}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}2\mathrm{GeV}/c)$, $\overline{p}$ and $p$ yields are comparable to the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+/\ensuremath{-}}$ yields.

Two-pion correlations in roots(NN) = 130 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC have been measured over a broad range of pair transverse momentum k(T) by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. The k(T) dependent transverse radii are similar to results from heavy-ion collisions at roots(NN) = 4.1 , 4.9, and 17.3 GeV, whereas the longitudinal radius increases monotonically with beam energy. The ratio of the outwards to sidewards transverse radii (R-out/R-side) is consistent with unity and independent of k(T) .

Transverse momentum spectra of electrons from Au+Au collisions at roots(NN) = 130 GeV have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The spectra show an excess above the background from photon conversions and light hadron decays. The electron signal is consistent with that expected from semileptonic decays of charm. The yield of the electron signal dN(e)/dy for p(T) > 0.8 GeV/c is 0.025 +/- 0.004(stat) +/- 0.010( syst) in central collisions, and the corresponding charm cross section is 380 +/- 60(stat) +/- 200(syst ) mub per binary nucleon-nucleon collision.

- Abstract
We present results on the measurement of Lambda and Lambda(macro) production in Au+Au collisions at square root of (S (NN) = 130 GeV with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The transverse momentum spectra were measured for minimum bias and for the 5% most central events. The Lambda;/Lambda ratios are constant as a function of p(T) and the number of participants. The measured net Lambda density is significantly larger than predicted by models based on hadronic strings (e.g., HIJING) but in approximate agreement with models which include the gluon-junction mechanism.

- Abstract
Two-particle azimuthal correlation functions are presented for charged hadrons produced in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (sqrt [s(NN)]=130 GeV). The measurements permit determination of elliptic flow without event-by-event estimation of the reaction plane. The extracted elliptic flow values (v2) show significant sensitivity to both the collision centrality and the transverse momenta of emitted hadrons, suggesting rapid thermalization and relatively strong velocity fields. When scaled by the eccentricity of the collision zone epsilon, the scaled elliptic flow shows little or no dependence on centrality for charged hadrons with relatively low p(T). A breakdown of this epsilon scaling is observed for charged hadrons with pT1.0 GeV/c.

- Abstract
Data from Au + Au interactions at sqrt[s(NN)]=130 GeV, obtained with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, are used to investigate local net charge fluctuations among particles produced near midrapidity. According to recent suggestions, such fluctuations may carry information from the quark-gluon plasma. This analysis shows that the fluctuations are dominated by a stochastic distribution of particles, but are also sensitive to other effects, like global charge conservation and resonance decays.

- Abstract
Transverse momentum spectra of electrons from Au+Au collisions at square root[s(NN)] = 130 GeV have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The spectra show an excess above the background from photon conversions and light hadron decays. The electron signal is consistent with that expected from semileptonic decays of charm. The yield of the electron signal dN(e)/dy for p(T)0.8 GeV/c is 0.025+/-0.004(stat)+/-0.010(syst) in central collisions, and the corresponding charm cross section is 380+/-60(stat)+/-200(syst) microb per binary nucleon-nucleon collision.

- Abstract
Two-pion correlations in square root[s(NN)] = 130 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC have been measured over a broad range of pair transverse momentum k(T) by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. The k(T) dependent transverse radii are similar to results from heavy-ion collisions at square root[s(NN)] = 4.1, 4.9, and 17.3 GeV, whereas the longitudinal radius increases monotonically with beam energy. The ratio of the outwards to sidewards transverse radii (R(out)/R(side)) is consistent with unity and independent of k(T).

Transverse momentum spectra for charged hadrons and for neutral pions in the range 1 Gev/c < P-T < 5 GeV/c have been measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC in Au + Au collisions at rootS(NN) = 130 GeV. At high p(T) the spectra from peripheral nuclear collisions are consistent with scaling the spectra from p + p collisions by the average number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The spectra from central collisions are significantly suppressed when compared to the binary-scaled p + p expectation, and also when compared to similarly binary-scaled peripheral collisions, indicating a novel nuclear-medium effect in central nuclear collisions at RHIC energies.

- Abstract
Identified pi(+/-), K(+/-), p, and (-)p transverse momentum spectra at midrapidity in sqrt[s(NN)] = 130 GeV Au+Au collisions were measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC as a function of collision centrality. Average transverse momenta increase with the number of participating nucleons in a similar way for all particle species. Within errors, all midrapidity particle yields per participant are found to be increasing with the number of participating nucleons. There is an indication that K(+/-), p, and (-)p yields per participant increase faster than the pi(+/-) yields. In central collisions at high transverse momenta (p(T)or =2 GeV/c), (-)p and p yields are comparable to the pi(+/-) yields.

- Abstract
Transverse momentum spectra for charged hadrons and for neutral pions in the range 1 GeV/cp(T)5 GeV/c have been measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC in Au+Au collisions at root square[s(NN)] = 130 GeV. At high p(T) the spectra from peripheral nuclear collisions are consistent with scaling the spectra from p+p collisions by the average number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The spectra from central collisions are significantly suppressed when compared to the binary-scaled p+p expectation, and also when compared to similarly binary-scaled peripheral collisions, indicating a novel nuclear-medium effect in central nuclear collisions at RHIC energies.

The first measurement of energy produced transverse to the beam direction at RHIC is presented. The mid-rapidity transverse energy density per participating nucleon rises steadily with the number of participants, closely paralleling the rise in charged-particle density, such that E_T / N_ch remains relatively constant as a function of centrality. The energy density calculated via Bjorken's prescription for the 2% most central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV is at least epsilon_Bj = 4.6 GeV/fm^3 which is a factor of 1.6 larger than found at sqrt(s_NN)=17.2 GeV (Pb+Pb at CERN).

The first measurement of energy produced transverse to the beam direction at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory is presented. The midrapidity transverse energy density per participating nucleon rises steadily with the number of participants, closely paralleling the rise in charged-particle density, such thatE(T)/N(ch)remains relatively constant as a function of centrality. The energy density calculated via Bjorken's prescription for the 2% most central Au+Au collisions at square root[s(NN)] = 130 GeV is at least epsilon(Bj) = 4.6 GeV/fm(3), which is a factor of 1.6 larger than found at sqrt[s(NN)] = 17.2 GeV ( Pb+Pb at CERN).

- Abstract
We present results for the charged-particle multiplicity distribution at midrapidity in Au-Au collisions at square root of [s(NN)] = 130 GeV measured with the PHENIX detector at RHIC. For the 5% most central collisions we find dN(ch)/d eta(vertical line eta = 0) = 622+/-1(stat)+/-41(syst). The results, analyzed as a function of centrality, show a steady rise of the particle density per participating nucleon with centrality.

- Abstract
We report new precision measurements of the lifetimes of the Lambda(+)(c) and D0 from SELEX, the charm hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab. Based upon 1630 Lambda(+)(c) and 10 210 D0 decays we observe lifetimes of tau[Lambda(+)(c)] = 198.1+/-7.0+/-5.6 fs and tau[D0] = 407.9+/-6.0+/-4.3 fs.

We report the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed charm baryon decay Xi(+)(c)--pK(-)pi(+). We observe 150+/-22+/-5 events for the signal. The data were accumulated using the SELEX spectrometer during the 1996-1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, chiefly from a 600 GeV/c Sigma(-) beam. The branching fractions of the decay relative to the Cabibbo-favored Xi(+)(c)--Sigma+K-pi(+) and Xi(+)(c)--Xi(-)pi(+)pi(+) are measured to be B(Xi(+)(c)--pK(-)pi(+))/B(Xi(+)(c)--Sigma+K-pi(+)) = 0.22+/-0. 06+/-0.03 and B(Xi(+)(c)--pK(-)pi(+))/B(Xi(+)(c)--Xi(-)pi(+)pi(+)) = 0.20+/-0.04+/-0.02, respectively.
