1. Exact quantum conformal symmetry, its spontaneous breakdown, and gravitational Weyl anomaly

Abstract

The classical Lagrangian of the Standard Model enjoys the symmetry of the full conformal group if the mass of the Higgs boson is put to zero. This is a hint that conformal symmetry may play a fundamental role in the ultimate theory describing nature. The origin of scales, such as the Higgs vacuum expectation value (VEV), may result from the spontaneous breakdown of the conformal symmetry by the dilaton field. In this work, we study whether this classical setup can be implemented in quantum theory and be phenomeno-logically viable by presenting an explicit construction where the exact conformal symmetry can be preserved and is anomaly-free while being spontaneously broken. Not only the Higgs mass but also the genuine quantum scales such as the QCD confinement radius are generated by the dilaton VEV. We also discuss the extension of these ideas to the theories with dynamical gravity and show that the only finite subgroup of the local Weyl transformations which is anomaly-free corresponds to the global scale symmetry. This means that the conformal invariance of the flat space theory is explicitly broken down to the scale symmetry by gravitational effects related to the Weyl anomaly.

Abstract

We consider the upscattering of atmospheric neutrinos in the interior of the Earth producing heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) which subsequently decay inside large volume detectors (e.g. Super-Kamiokande or DUNE). We compute the flux of upscattered HNLs arriving at a detector, and the resultant event rate of visible decay products. Using Super-Kamiokande's atmospheric neutrino dataset we find new leading constraints for dipole couplings to any flavor with HNL masses between roughly 10 MeV and 100 MeV. For mass mixing with tau neutrinos, we probe new parameter space near HNL masses of $\sim 20$ MeV with prospects for substantial future improvements. Abstract

We consider a minimal model where the Higgs boson arises as an elementary pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. The model is based on an extended scalar sector with global SO(5)/SO(4) symmetry. To achieve the correct electroweak symmetry-breaking pattern, the model is augmented either with an explicit symmetry-breaking term or an extra singlet scalar field. We consider separately both of these possibilities. We fit the model with the known particle spectrum at the electroweak scale and extrapolate to high energies using renormalization group. We find that the model can remain stable and perturbative up to the Planck scale provided that the heavy beyond standard model scalar states have masses in a narrow interval around 3 TeV.

Abstract

We consider an extension of the Standard Model with the global symmetry breaking pattern SO(5)/SO(4), where the Higgs boson arises as a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. The scalar content of the theory consists of a Standard-Model-like Higgs field and an extra real scalar field. The flavour sector of the model is extended by two right-handed neutrinos compatible with the observed light-neutrino phenomenology, and we find that the correct vacuum alignment determines the mass of the heavier neutrino eigenstate to be around 80 TeV. The new singlet-scalar state generates dynamically a Majorana mass term for the heavy neutrino states. We show how the model leads to the correct baryon asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis in the case of two degenerate or hierarchical heavy neutrinos., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. v2 to match the published version

Abstract

We investigate the compatibility of minimally coupled scalar, fermion and gauge fields with asymptotically safe quantum gravity, using nonperturbative functional Renormalization Group methods. We study d=4,5 and 6 dimensions and within certain approximations find that for a given number of gauge fields there is a maximal number of scalar and fermion degrees of freedom compatible with an interacting fixed point at positive Newton coupling. The bounds impose severe constraints on grand unification with fundamental Higgs scalars. Supersymmetry and universal extra dimensions are also generally disfavored. The standard model and its extensions accommodating right-handed neutrinos, the axion and dark-matter models with a single scalar are compatible with a fixed point., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

We consider cosmologies in which a dark-energy scalar field interacts with cold dark matter. The growth of perturbations is followed beyond the linear level by means of the time-renormalization-group method, which is extended to describe a multi-component matter sector. Even in the absence of the extra interaction, a scale-dependent bias is generated as a consequence of the different initial conditions for baryons and dark matter after decoupling. The effect is enhanced significantly by the extra coupling and can be at the 2-3 percent level in the range of scales of baryonic acoustic oscillations. ArXiv pre-print available at http://arxiv.org/abs/0806.4389, We analyze the phenomenology of a prolonged early epoch of matter domination by an unstable but very long-lived massive particle. This new matter domination era can help to relax some of the requirements on the primordial inflation. Its main effect is the huge entropy production produced by the decays of such a particle that can dilute any possible unwanted relic, as the gravitino in supersymmetric models, and thus relax the constraints on the inflationary reheating temperature. A natural candidate for such a heavy, long-lived particle already present in the standard model of the electroweak interactions would be a heavy right-handed neutrino. 9. Search for gravitational wave radiation associated with the pulsating tail of the SGR 1806 20 hyperflare of 27 December 2004 using LIGO

Abstract

We have searched for gravitational waves (GWs) associated with the SGR 1806-20 hyperflare of 27 December 2004. This event, originating from a Galactic neutron star, displayed exceptional energetics. Recent investigations of the x-ray light curve''s pulsating tail revealed the presence of quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) in the 30-2000 Hz frequency range, most of which coincides with the bandwidth of the LIGO detectors. These QPOs, with well-characterized frequencies, can plausibly be attributed to seismic modes of the neutron star which could emit GWs. Our search targeted potential quasimonochromatic GWs lasting for tens of seconds and emitted at the QPO frequencies. We have observed no candidate signals above a predetermined threshold, and our lowest upper limit was set by the 92.5 Hz QPO observed in the interval from 150 s to 260 s after the start of the flare. This bound corresponds to a (90% confidence) root-sum-squared amplitude h(rss-det)(90%)=4.5x10(-22) strain Hz(-1/2) on the GW waveform strength in the detectable polarization state reaching our Hanford (WA) 4 km detector. We illustrate the astrophysical significance of the result via an estimated characteristic energy in GW emission that we would expect to be able to detect. The above result corresponds to 7.7x10(46) erg (=4.3x10(-8) Mc(2)), which is of the same order as the total (isotropic) energy emitted in the electromagnetic spectrum. This result provides a means to probe the energy reservoir of the source with the best upper limit on the GW waveform strength published and represents the first broadband asteroseismology measurement using a GW detector.
