1. Optimizing foreground mitigation for CMB lensing with combined multifrequency and geometric methods

Abstract

A key challenge for current and upcoming cosmic microwave background lensing measurements is their sensitivity to biases from extragalactic foregrounds, such as Sunyaev-Zel'dovich signals or cosmic infrared background emission. Several methods have been developed to mitigate these lensing foreground biases, dividing broadly into multifrequency cleaning approaches and modifications to the estimator geometry, but how to optimally combine these methods has not yet been explored in detail. In this paper, we examine which combination of lensing foreground mitigation strategies is best able to reduce the impact of foreground contamination for a Simons Observatory-like experiment while preserving maximal signal-to-noise. Although the optimal combination obtained depends on whether bias reduction or variance reduction is prioritized and on whether polarization data is used, generally, we find that combinations involving both geometric (profile hardening, source hardening, or shear) and multifrequency (symmetric cleaning) methods perform best. For lensing power spectrum measurements from temperature (polarization and temperature), our combined estimator methods are able to reduce the bias below σ/4 or 0.3% (0.1%), a factor of 16 (30) lower than the standard quadratic estimator bias, at a modest signal-to-noise cost of only 18% (12%). In contrast, single-method foreground-mitigation approaches struggle to reduce the bias to a negligible level below σ/2 without incurring a large noise penalty. For upcoming and current experiments, our combined methods therefore represent a promising approach for making lensing measurements with negligible foreground bias.

Abstract

The early dark energy (EDE) scenario aims to increase the value of the Hubble constant (H0) inferred from cosmic microwave background (CMB) data over that found in the standard cosmological model (ΛCDM), via the introduction of a new form of energy density in the early Universe. The EDE component briefly accelerates cosmic expansion just prior to recombination, which reduces the physical size of the sound horizon imprinted in the CMB. Previous work has found that nonzero EDE is not preferred by Planck CMB power spectrum data alone, which yield a 95% confidence level (C.L.) upper limit fEDE99.7% C.L.: fEDE=0.091-0.036+0.020, with H0=70.9-2.0+1.0 km/s/Mpc (both 68% C.L.). From a model-selection standpoint, we find that EDE is favored over ΛCDM by these data at roughly 3σ significance. In contrast, a joint analysis of the full Planck and ACT data yields no evidence for EDE, as previously found for Planck alone. We show that the preference for EDE in ACT alone is driven by its TE and EE power spectrum data. The tight constraint on EDE from Planck alone is driven by its high-ℓ TT power spectrum data. Understanding whether these differing constraints are physical in nature, due to systematics, or simply a rare statistical fluctuation is of high priority. The best-fit EDE models to ACT and Planck exhibit coherent differences across a wide range of multipoles in TE and EE, indicating that a powerful test of this scenario is anticipated with near-future data from ACT and other ground-based experiments.

Abstract

We introduce and validate a delensing framework for the Simons Observatory (SO), which will be used to improve constraints on inflationary gravitational waves by reducing the lensing noise in measurements of the B modes in CMB polarization. SO will initially observe CMB by using three small aperture telescopes and one large-aperture telescope. While polarization maps from small-aperture telescopes will be used to constrain inflationary gravitational waves, the internal CMB lensing maps used to delens will be reconstructed from data from the large-aperture telescope. Since lensing maps obtained from the SO data will be noise dominated on subdegree scales, the SO lensing framework constructs a template for lensing-induced B modes by combining internal CMB lensing maps with maps of the cosmic infrared background from Planck as well as galaxy density maps from the LSST survey. We construct a likelihood for constraining the tensor-to-scalar ratio r that contains auto and cross spectra between observed B modes and the lensing B-mode template. We test our delensing analysis pipeline on map-based simulations containing survey nonidealities, but that, for this initial exploration, does not include contamination from Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. We find that the SO survey masking and inhomogeneous and atmospheric noise have very little impact on the delensing performance, and the r constraint becomes σ(r)≈0.0015 which is close to that obtained from the idealized forecasts in the absence of the Galactic foreground and is nearly a factor of 2 tighter than without delensing. We also find that uncertainties in the external large-scale structure tracers used in our multitracer delensing pipeline lead to bias much smaller than the 1σ statistical uncertainties.

Abstract

Optimal analyses of many signals in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) require map-level extraction of individual components in the microwave sky, rather than measurements at the power spectrum level alone. To date, nearly all map-level component separation in CMB analyses has been performed exclusively using satellite data. In this paper, we implement a component separation method based on the internal linear combination (ILC) approach which we have designed to optimally account for the anisotropic noise (in the 2D Fourier domain) often found in ground-based CMB experiments. Using this method, we combine multifrequency data from the Planck satellite and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Polarimeter (ACTPol) to construct the first wide-area (≈2100 sq. deg.), arcminute-resolution component-separated maps of the CMB temperature anisotropy and the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect sourced by the inverse-Compton scattering of CMB photons off hot, ionized gas. Our ILC pipeline allows for explicit deprojection of various contaminating signals, including a modified blackbody approximation of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) spectral energy distribution. The cleaned CMB maps will be a useful resource for CMB lensing reconstruction, kinematic SZ cross-correlations, and primordial non-Gaussianity studies. The tSZ maps will be used to study the pressure profiles of galaxies, groups, and clusters through cross-correlations with halo catalogs, with dust contamination controlled via CIB deprojection. The data products described in this paper are available on LAMBDA.

5. Improving small-scale CMB lensing reconstruction

Abstract

Over the past decade, the gravitational lensing of the Cosmic MicrowaveBackground (CMB) has become a powerful tool for probing the matter distributionin the Universe. The standard technique used to reconstruct the CMB lensingsignal employs the quadratic estimator (QE) method, which has recently beenshown to be suboptimal for lensing measurements on very small scales intemperature and polarization data. We implement a simple, more optimal methodfor the small-scale regime, which involves taking the direct inverse of thebackground gradient. We derive new techniques to make continuous maps oflensing using this "Gradient-Inversion" (GI) method and validate our methodwith simulated data, finding good agreement with predictions. For idealizedsimulations of lensing cross- and autospectra that neglect foregrounds, wedemonstrate that our method performs significantly better than previousquadratic estimator methods in temperature; at $L=5000-9000$, it reduces errorson the lensing auto-power spectrum by a factor of $\sim 4$ for both idealizedCMB-S4 and Simons Observatory-like experiments and by a factor of $\sim 2.6$for cross-correlations of CMB-S4-like lensing reconstruction and the truelensing field. We caution that the level of the neglected small-scaleforeground power, while low in polarization, is very high in temperature;though we briefly outline foreground mitigation methods, further work on thistopic is required. Nevertheless, our results show the future potential forimproved small-scale CMB lensing measurements, which could provide strongerconstraints on cosmological parameters and astrophysics at high redshifts.

Abstract

We use microwave temperature maps from two seasons of data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope at 146 GHz, together with the "Constant Mass" CMASS galaxy sample from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey to measure the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect over the redshift range z=0.4-0.7. We use galaxy positions and the continuity equation to obtain a reconstruction of the line-of-sight velocity field. We stack the microwave temperature at the location of each halo, weighted by the corresponding reconstructed velocity. We vary the size of the aperture photometry filter used, thus probing the free electron profile of these halos from within the virial radius out to three virial radii, on the scales relevant for investigating the missing baryons problem. The resulting best fit kSZ model is preferred over the no-kSZ hypothesis at 3.3 and 2.9σ for two independent velocity reconstruction methods, using 25,537 galaxies over 660 square degrees. The data suggest that the baryon profile is shallower than the dark matter in the inner regions of the halos probed here, potentially due to energy injection from active galactic nucleus or supernovae. Thus, by constraining the gas profile on a wide range of scales, this technique will be useful for understanding the role of feedback in galaxy groups and clusters. The effect of foregrounds that are uncorrelated with the galaxy velocities is expected to be well below our signal, and residual thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich contamination is controlled by masking the most massive clusters. Finally, we discuss the systematics involved in converting our measurement of the kSZ amplitude into the mean free electron fraction of the halos in our sample.

Abstract

We constrain anisotropic cosmic birefringence using four-point correlations of even-parity E-mode and odd-parity B-mode polarization in the cosmic microwave background measurements made by the POLARization of the Background Radiation (POLARBEAR) experiment in its first season of observations. We find that the anisotropic cosmic birefringence signal from any parity-violating processes is consistent with zero. The Faraday rotation from anisotropic cosmic birefringence can be compared with the equivalent quantity generated by primordial magnetic fields if they existed. The POLARBEAR nondetection translates into a 95% confidence level (C.L.) upper limit of 93 nanogauss (nG) on the amplitude of an equivalent primordial magnetic field inclusive of systematic uncertainties. This four-point correlation constraint on Faraday rotation is about 15 times tighter than the upper limit of 1380 nG inferred from constraining the contribution of Faraday rotation to two-point correlations of B-modes measured by Planck in 2015. Metric perturbations sourced by primordial magnetic fields would also contribute to the B-mode power spectrum. Using the POLARBEAR measurements of the B-mode power spectrum (two-point correlation), we set a 95% C.L. upper limit of 3.9 nG on primordial magnetic fields assuming a flat prior on the field amplitude. This limit is comparable to what was found in the Planck 2015 two-point correlation analysis with both temperature and polarization. We perform a set of systematic error tests and find no evidence for contamination. This work marks the first time that anisotropic cosmic birefringence or primordial magnetic fields have been constrained from the ground at subdegree scales.

$H_0$ constraints from galaxy surveys are sourced by the geometric properties of two standardisable rulers: the sound horizon scale, $r_s$, and the matter-radiation equality scale, $k_{\rm eq}$. While most analyses over the last decade have focused on the first scale, recent work has emphasised that the second can provide an independent source of information about the expansion rate of the universe. Recent approaches to obtain a sound-horizon-independent measurement of $H_0$ from the equality scale have avoided $r_s$-based information by removing the sound-horizon-calibrating prior on the baryon density. We present a new method to marginalise over $r_s$; this allows baryon information to be retained enabling tighter parameter constraints. For a Euclid-like spectroscopic survey, we forecast sound-horizon-independent $H_0$ constraints of $\sigma_{H_0} = 0.7\rm{\ km\ s^{-1}\ Mpc^{-1}}$ for our method using the equality scale, compared with $\sigma_{H_0} = 0.5\rm{\ km\ s^{-1}\ Mpc^{-1}}$ from the sound horizon. Upcoming equality scale $H_0$ measurements thus can be highly competitive, although we caution that the impact of observational systematics on such measurements still needs to be investigated in detail. Applying our new approach to the BOSS power spectrum gives $H_0 = 69.5^{+3.0}_{-3.5}\rm{\ km\ s^{-1}\ Mpc^{-1}}$ from equality alone, somewhat tighter than previous constraints. Consistency of $r_s$- and $k_{\rm eq}$-based $H_0$ measurements can provide a valuable internal consistency test of the cosmological model; as an example, we consider the change in $H_0$ created by early dark energy. Assuming the \textit{Planck}+SH0ES best-fit EDE model we find a $2.6\sigma$ shift ($\Delta H_0 = 2.6\rm{\ km\ s^{-1}\ Mpc^{-1}}$) between the two measurements for Euclid; if we instead assume the ACT best-fit model, this increases to $9.0\sigma$ ($\Delta H_0 = 7.8\rm{\ km\ s^{-1}\ Mpc^{-1}}$)., Comment: 19 Pages, 9 Figures, 4 Tables, comments welcome, published in PRD

Abstract

We present cosmological constraints from the combination of the full mission nine-year WMAP release and small-scale temperature data from the pre-Planck Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and South Pole Telescope (SPT) generation of instruments. This is an update of the analysis presented in Calabrese et al. [Phys. Rev. D 87, 103012 (2013)], and highlights the impact on CDM cosmology of a 0.06 eV massive neutrino which was assumed in the Planck analysis but not in the ACTSPT analyses and a Planck-cleaned measurement of the optical depth to reionization. We show that cosmological constraints are now strong enough that small differences in assumptions about reionization and neutrino mass give systematic differences which are clearly detectable in the data. We recommend that these updated results be used when comparing cosmological constraints from WMAP, ACT and SPT with other surveys or with current and future full-mission Planck cosmology. Abstract

Large-scale Fourier modes of the cosmic density field are of great value for learning about cosmology because of their well-understood relationship to fluctuations in the early universe. However, cosmic variance generally limits the statistical precision that can be achieved when constraining model parameters using these modes as measured in galaxy surveys, and moreover, these modes are sometimes inaccessible due to observational systematics or foregrounds. For some applications, both limitations can be circumvented by reconstructing large-scale modes using the correlations they induce between smaller-scale modes of an observed tracer (such as galaxy positions). In this paper, we further develop a formalism for this reconstruction, using a quadratic estimator similar to the one used for lensing of the cosmic microwave background. We incorporate nonlinearities from gravity, nonlinear biasing, and local-type primordial non-Gaussianity, and verify that the estimator gives the expected results when applied to N-body simulations. We then carry out forecasts for several upcoming surveys, demonstrating that, when reconstructed modes are included alongside directly-observed tracer density modes, constraints on local primordial non-Gaussianity are generically tightened by tens of percents compared to standard single-tracer analyses. In certain cases, these improvements arise from cosmic variance cancellation, with reconstructed modes taking the place of modes of a separate tracer, thus enabling an effective "multitracer" approach with single-tracer observations., Comment: 30 pages plus 14 pages appendices, 19 figures

Abstract

We measure the cross-correlation of cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing convergence maps derived from Atacama Cosmology Telescope data with galaxy lensing convergence maps as measured by the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Stripe 82 Survey. The CMB-galaxy lensing cross power spectrum is measured for the first time with a significance of 4.2σ, which corresponds to a 12% constraint on the amplitude of density fluctuations at redshifts ∼0.9. With upcoming improved lensing data, this novel type of measurement will become a powerful cosmological probe, providing a precise measurement of the mass distribution at intermediate redshifts and serving as a calibrator for systematic biases in weak lensing measurements.
