Abstract

Measurements are presented for several mixtures of the spin observables ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{SS}}$,${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{SL}}$=${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{LS}}$, ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{LL}}$, and ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{NN}}$ for neutron-proton elastic scattering. These data were obtained with a free polarized neutron beam, a polarized proton target, and a large magnetic spectrometer for the outgoing proton. The neutron beam kinetic energies were 484, 567, 634, 720, and 788 MeV. Combining these results with earlier measurements allows the determination of the pure spin observables ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{SS}}$, ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{LS}}$, and ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{LL}}$ at 484, 634, and 788 MeV for c.m. angles 25\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\ensuremath{\le}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\theta}}}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}$\ensuremath{\le}180\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} and at 720 MeV for 35\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\ensuremath{\le}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\theta}}}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}$\ensuremath{\le}80\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}. These data make a significant contribution to the knowledge of the isospin-0 nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitudes. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

A measurement of \ensuremath{\Delta}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}}_{\mathit{L}}$(np), the difference between neutron-proton total cross sections for pure longitudinal spin states, is described. Data were taken at LAMPF for five neutron beam kinetic energies: 484, 568, 634, 720, and 788 MeV. The statistical errors are in the range of 0.64--1.35 mb. Various sources of systematic effects were investigated and are described. Overall systematic errors are estimated to be on the order of 0.5 mb and include an estimate for the uncertainty in the neutron beam polarization. The \ensuremath{\Delta}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}}_{\mathit{L}}$ results are consistent with previous results from PSI and Saclay. These data, when combined with other results and fitted to a Breit-Wigner curve, are consistent with an elastic I=0 resonance with mass 2214\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}15 (stat) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}6 (syst) MeV and width 75\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}21\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}12 MeV. Because of a lack of \ensuremath{\Delta}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}}}_{\mathit{T}}$(np) data between 500 and 800 MeV, it is not possible to differentiate between a singlet or coupled-triplet partial wave being responsible.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the mass difference m(D-s(+))-m(D+), where both the D-s(+) and D+ are reconstructed in the phipi(+) decay channel. This measurement uses 11.6 pb(-1) of data collected by CDF II using the new displaced-track trigger. The mass difference is found to be m(D-s(+))-m(D+)=99.41+/-0.38(stat)+/-0.21(syst) MeV/c(2).

Abstract

A study of the $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$-jet mass spectrum in ${e}^{+}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}X$ events at a center-of-mass energy 300 GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider at DESY using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}.$ The mass spectrum is in good agreement with that expected from standard model processes over the $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$-jet mass range studied. No significant excess attributable to the decay of a narrow resonance is observed. By using both ${e}^{+}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{e}^{+}X$ and ${e}^{+}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}X$ data, mass-dependent limits are set on the s-channel production of scalar and vector resonant states. Couplings to first-generation quarks are considered and limits are presented as a function of the ${e}^{+}q$ and $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}q$ branching ratios. These limits are used to constrain the production of leptoquarks and R-parity violating squarks.

Abstract

The spin-correlation parameter /ital A//sub /ital nn// for free /ital n/-/ital p/elastic scattering has been measured for the first time forincident-neutron-beam energy /ital E//sub /ital n//=790 MeV and c.m. angles48/degree/less than or equal totheta/sup */less than or equal to149/degree/. The data are compared with thewidely differing predictions of several phase-shift analyses, clearly favoringone of them. They also are compared with recently published quasifree/ital A//sub /ital nn// data for the more limited c.m. angular region98/degree//approx lt/theta/sup *//approx lt/122/degree/.

Abstract

The mixed spin-spin correlation parameter ${C}_{\ensuremath{\sigma}\ensuremath{\sigma}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.5{C}_{\mathrm{SS}}\ensuremath{-}0.8{C}_{\mathrm{SL}}$ for $\mathrm{np}$ elastic scattering was measured for incident-neutron-beam kinetic energies of 484, 634, and 788 MeV over the center-of-mass angular range 75\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}-180\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}. These ${C}_{\ensuremath{\sigma}\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ data are important for determining the $I=0$ nucleon-nucleon amplitudes and provide strong constraints on the phase-shift solutions. It was found that the $^{1}P_{1}$, $^{3}S_{1}$, and $^{3}D_{1}$ isospin-0 partial waves are most strongly affected.
