Abstract

We measure the relative rate of production of orbitally excited (L = 1) states of B mesons (B**) by observing their decays into B pi (+/-). We reconstruct B mesons through semileptonic decay channels using data collected in p(p) over bar collisions at roots = 1.8 TeV. The fraction of light B mesons that are produced as L = 1B** states is measured to be 0.28 +/- 0.06(stat) +/- 0.03(syst). We also measure the collective mass of the B** states, and quantify the result by quoting the (model-dependent) mass of the lowest B** state to be m(B-1) = 5.71 +/- 0.02 GeV/c(2).

Abstract

We present a study of events with W bosons and hadronic jets produced in p{anti p} collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The data consist of 51400 W {yields} e {nu} decay candidates from 108 pb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity collected using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Cross sections and jet production properties have been measured for W + {>=} 1 to {>=} 4 jet events. The data compare well to predictions of leading-order QCD matrix element calculations with added gluon radiation and simulated parton fragmentation.

Abstract

We report on the first measurement of the rapidity distribution dsigma/dy over nearly the entire kinematic region of rapidity for e^+e^- pairs in the Z-boson region of 66 116 GeV/c^2. The data sample consists of 108 pb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV taken by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992--1995. The total cross section in the $Z$-boson region is measured to be 252 +- 11 pb. The measured total cross section and d\sigma/dy are compared with quantum chromodynamics calculations in leading and higher orders.

Abstract

Top quark production offers the unique opportunity to search for a charged Higgs boson (H{sup {+-}}), as the contribution from t{yields}H{sup +}b{yields}{tau}{sup +}{nu}b can be large in extensions of the standard model. We use results from a search for top quark pair production by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in the e{tau}+Ee{sub T}+jets and {mu}{tau}+Ee{sub T}+jets signatures to set an upper limit on the branching ratio of B(t{yields}H{sup +}b) in 106 pb{sup -1} of data. The upper limit is in the range 0.5 to 0.6 at 95% C.L. for H{sup +} masses in the range 60 to 160 GeV, assuming the branching ratio for H{sup +}{yields}{tau}{nu} is 100%. The {tau} lepton is detected through its 1-prong and 3-prong hadronic decays. (c) 2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the cross section for production of two or more jets as a function of dijet mass, based on an integrated luminosity of 86 pb{sup -1} collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Our dijet mass spectrum is described within errors by next-to-leading order QCD predictions using CTEQ4HJ parton distributions, and is in good agreement with a similar measurement from the DOe experiment. Abstract

This paper reports an updated measurement of the standard model CP violation parameter sin 2{beta} using the CDF Detector at Fermilab. The entire run I data sample of 110 pb{sup -1} of proton-antiproton collisions at {radical}(s)=1.8 TeV is used to identify a signal sample of {approx}400 B{yields}J/{psi} K{sub S}{sup 0} events, where J/{psi}{yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} and K{sub S}{sup 0}{yields}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}. The flavor of the neutral B meson is identified at the time of production by combining information from three tagging algorithms: a same-side tag, a jet-charge tag, and a soft-lepton tag. A maximum likelihood fitting method is used to determine sin 2{beta}=0.79{sub -0.44}{sup +0.41}(stat+syst). This value of sin 2{beta} is consistent with the standard model prediction, based upon existing measurements, of a large positive CP-violating asymmetry in this decay mode. Abstract

The oscillation frequency {delta}m{sub d} of B{sup 0}B(bar sign){sup 0} mixing is measured using the partially reconstructed semileptonic decay B(bar sign){sup 0}{yields}l{sup -}{nu}(bar sign)D{sup *+}X. The data sample was collected with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider during 1992-1995 by triggering on the existence of two lepton candidates in an event, and corresponds to about 110 pb{sup -1} of p(bar sign)p collisions at {radical}(s)=1.8 TeV. We estimate the proper decay time of the B(bar sign){sup 0} meson from the measured decay length and reconstructed momentum of the l{sup -}D{sup *+} system. The charge of the lepton in the final state identifies the flavor of the B(bar sign){sup 0} meson at its decay. The second lepton in the event is used to infer the flavor of the B(bar sign){sup 0} meson at production. We measure the oscillation frequency to be {delta}m{sub d}=0.516{+-}0.099{sub -0.035}{sup +} {sup 0.029} ps{sup -1}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.
