Abstract

We have searched for the decay $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}_{s1}^{+}(2536)X$ and measured an upper limit for the inclusive branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}_{s1}^{+}X)l0.96%$ at the 90% confidence level. This limit is small compared with the total expected $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}^{(*)}{D}^{(*)}\mathrm{KX}$ rate. Assuming factorization, the ${D}_{s1}^{+}$ decay constant is constrained to be ${f}_{{D}_{s1}^{+}}$114 MeV at the 90% confidence level, at least 2.5 times smaller than that of ${D}_{s}^{+}$.

Abstract

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have made a measurement of R≡σ(e^+e^-→hadrons)/σ(e^+e^-→μ^+μ^-)=3.56±0.01±0.07 at √s=10.52 GeV. This implies a value for the strong coupling constant of α_s(10.52 GeV)=0.20±0.01±0.06, or α_s(MZ)=0.13±0.005±0.03.

Abstract

We have searched for the rare decay of the eta meson $\eta \to e^{+}e^{-}$ using the CLEO II detector. The $\eta$'s were produced in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions with 10 GeV center-of-mass energy at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). We find with 90% confidence the upper limit on the branching fraction $B(\eta \to e^{+}e^{-}) < 7.7\times 10^{-5}$. The application of conventional elementary particle theory to this decay predicts a branching fraction of about $10^{-9}$.

Abstract

A search for the decay of the tau lepton to seven charged pions and one or zero pizero mesons was performed using the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The analysis uses 232.2 fb-1 of data at center-of-mass energies on or near the Y(4S) resonance. We observe 24 events with an expected background of 21.6+-1.3 events. Without evidence for a signal, we calculate an upper limit of BR(tau- --> 4pi- 3pi+ (pizero) nu_tau) 4pi- 3pi+ nu_tau and tau- --> 4pi- 3pi+ pizero nu_tau.

Abstract

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} storage ring CESR we study the two-photon production of {Lambda}{bar {Lambda}}, making the first observation of {gamma}{gamma}{r_arrow}{Lambda}{bar {Lambda}}. We present the cross section for {gamma}{gamma}{r_arrow}{Lambda}{bar {Lambda}} as a function of the {gamma}{gamma} center of mass energy and compare it to that predicted by the quark-diquark model. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract

Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we determine the ratio R{sub chrg} for the mean charged multiplicity observed in {Upsilon}(1S){r_arrow}gg{gamma} events, {l_angle}n{sub gluon}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}, to the mean charged multiplicity observed in e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}q{bar q}{gamma} events, {l_angle}n{sub quark}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}. We find R{sub chrg}{equivalent_to}{l_angle}n{sub gluon}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}/{l_angle}n{sub quark}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}=1.04 {plus_minus}0.02(stat){plus_minus}0.05(syst) for jet-jet masses less than 7 GeV. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract

We have searched for the decays $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ in a sample of $2.7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ charged $B$ decays collected with the CLEO II detector. In the muon channel, we observe no candidates in the signal region and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\gamma})l5.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ at the 90% confidence level. In the electron channel, we observe five candidates in the signal region and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}\ensuremath{\gamma})l2.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the magnitude of the {nu}{sub {tau}} helicity from {tau}-pair events taken with the CLEO detector at the CESR electron-positron storage ring. Events in which each {tau} undergoes the decay {tau}{r_arrow}h{nu}, with h a charged pion or kaon, are analyzed for energy correlations between the daughter hadrons, yielding {vert_bar}{xi}{sub h}{vert_bar} = 1.03{plus_minus}0.06{plus_minus}0.04, with the first error statistical and the second systematic. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined the ratio of branching fractions: ${R}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}\ensuremath{\equiv}\ensuremath{\Gamma}(\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{gg})/\ensuremath{\Gamma}(\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{ggg})=[2.75\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15(\mathrm{syst})]%$. From this ratio, we have determined the QCD scale parameter ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\overline{\mathrm{MS}}}$ (defined in the modified minimal subtraction scheme) to be ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\overline{\mathrm{MS}}}=233\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}11\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}59$ MeV, from which we determine a value for the strong coupling constant ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}{(M}_{\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)})=0.163\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.002\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.014$, or ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}{(M}_{Z})=0.110\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.001\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.007$.

Abstract

Using data collected on the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance and the nearby continuum by the CLEO-II detector, we have studied combinations of baryons with leptons produced in the process $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}B\overline{B}$, $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{lepton}+X$, $\overline{B}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{baryon}+X$. Our results do not support models which attribute the bulk of ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}$ production in $\overline{B}$ decay to the process $b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\mathrm{cW}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{,W}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\overline{c}s$.

Abstract

Using data taken with the CLEO II detector, we have studied the decays of the ${D}^{0}$ to ${K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, ${K}^{0}{\overline{K}}^{0}$, ${K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}$, ${K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$, ${K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$. We present significantly improved results for $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}})=(0.454\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.028\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.035)%$, $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{0}{\overline{K}}^{0})=(0.054\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.012\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010)%$, and $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0})=(0.074\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.015)%$, where the first errors are statistical and the second errors are the estimate of our systematic uncertainty. We also present a new upper limit $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0})l0.059%$ at the 90% confidence level and the first measurement of $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0})=(0.14\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04)%$.

Abstract

Using the angular correlation between the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ emitted in a ${D}^{*+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ decay and the ${e}^{+}$ emitted in the subsequent ${D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{e}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu}$ decay, we have measured the branching fraction for the inclusive semielectronic decay of the ${D}^{0}$ meson to be $\mathcal{B}({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{e}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})=[6.64\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.18(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.29(\mathrm{syst})]%$. The measurement uses 1.7 ${\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collisions recorded by the CLEO II detector located at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). Combining this result with previous CLEO results we find $\frac{\mathcal{B}({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{e}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})}{\mathcal{B}({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})}=1.684\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.056(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.093(\mathrm{syst})$ and $\frac{\mathcal{B}({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{e}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})}{\mathcal{B}({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{e}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})}=0.581\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.023(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.028(\mathrm{syst})$. The difference between this inclusive rate and the sum of the measured exclusive branching fractions (measured at CLEO and other experiments) is also presented.

Abstract

This paper describes new measurements from CLEO of the inclusive B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{+}$X branching fraction as well as the ${\mathit{B}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{(\mathrm{*})+}$D${\mathrm{\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}}^{(\mathrm{*})0}$ and ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{(\mathrm{*})+}$${\mathit{D}}^{(\mathrm{*})\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ branching fractions. The inclusive branching fraction is B(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{+}$X)=(12.11\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.39\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.88\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.38)% where the first error is statistical, the second is the systematic error, and the third is the error due to the uncertainty in the ${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\varphi}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$ branching fraction. The branching fractions for the B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{(\mathrm{*})+}$D${\mathrm{\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}}^{(\mathrm{*})}$ modes are found to be between 0.9% and 2.4% and are significantly more precise than previous measurements. The sum of the B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{(\mathrm{*})+}$D${\mathrm{\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}}^{(\mathrm{*})}$ branching fractions is consistent with the results of fits to the inclusive ${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{+}$ momentum spectrum. Factorization is used to arrive at a value for ${\mathit{f}}_{{\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}}$, the ${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{+}$ decay constant. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report the observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decays {Lambda}{sub {ital c}}{sup +}{r_arrow}{ital pK{sup {minus}}K{sup +}} and {Lambda}{sub {ital c}}{sup +}{r_arrow}{ital p}{phi} using data collected with the CLEO II detector at CESR. The latter mode, observed for the first time with significant statistics, is of interest as a test of color suppression in charm decays. We have determined the branching ratios for these modes relative to {Lambda}{sub {ital c}}{sup +}{r_arrow}{ital pK{sup {minus}}}{pi}{sup +} and compared our results with theory. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
