Abstract

The ratio {ital R} of the total cross section for {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilation into hadrons to the lowest-order QED cross section for {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{r arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} has been measured for center-of-mass energies ranging from 50 to 61.4 GeV. If we allow for an overall shift of {minus}4.9%, about 1.5 times our estimated normalization error, the results are consistent with the standard-model predictions.

Abstract

We present the general properties of multihadron final states produced by {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilation at center-of-mass energies from 52 to 57 GeV in the AMY detector at the KEK collider TRISTAN. Global shape, inclusive charged-particle, and particle-flow distributions are presented. Our measurements are compared with QCD+fragmentation models that use either leading-logarithmic parton-shower evolution or QCD matrix elements at the parton level, and either string or cluster fragmentation for hadronization.

Abstract

A search for the pair production of charged Higgs particles decaying via the {ital H}{sup {minus}}{r arrow}{tau}{bar {nu}} mode has been made in {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilations at center-of-mass energies between 50 and 60.8 GeV using the AMY detector at the KEK collider TRISTAN. No evidence for their existence is observed and 95%-C.L. mass limits are presented. The result has been interpreted in terms of the tan{beta} parameter in the Higgs sector.

Abstract

The Abelian and non-Abelian gauge potentials A/sub munu/ are known to describe chiral fields. Here we study their interactions with dual extended objects. The region occupied by these objects is shown to behave like a distinct phase of chiral fields which is nondissipative under suitable geometric conditions. A method for the realization of the 't Hooft algebra in these systems is outlined. The concept of electric and magnetic duality in electromagnetism is generalized to chiral fields with values in a symmetric space.

Abstract

A detailed investigation of the decay UPSILON(2S)..--> pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/UPSILON(1S) has been made from 128 000 UPSILON(2S) decays observed in the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). We find this branching ratio to be (19.1 +- 1.2 +- 0.6)%. The properties of the ..pi pi.. system have been studied using 491 exclusive events of the type UPSILON(2S)..--> pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/UPSILON(1S), UPSILON(1S)..-->..e/sup +/e/sup -/ or ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/. Assuming e-..mu.. universality we find B(UPSILON(1S)..--> mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/) = (2.84 +- 0.18 +- 0.20)%. A search for UPSILON(2S)..-->..etaUPSILON(1S) yields an upper limit of 1% at the 90% confidence level for this branching ratio. We have also searched for (UPSILON(2S) or UPSILON(3S))..--> pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/UPSILON(1S), UPSILON(1S)..-->..noninteracting particles.

Abstract

The decay B-bar /sup 0/..-->..D/sup asterisk+/rho/sup -/ has been observed and the branching ratio is found to be (8.1 +- 2.9/sub -2.4//sup +5.9/)%. The result is compared with theoretical predictions.

Abstract

We report measurements made with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) of the total cross section for ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{hadrons}$ at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)$, $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(2S)$, and $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(3S)$, and in the nearby nonresonant continuum. We find $R=3.77\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06 (\mathrm{statistical}) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.24 (\mathrm{systematic})$ for the ratio of the nonresonant hadronic cross section to the cross section for muon-pair production at a center-of-mass total energy $W=10.4$ GeV. For the leptonic decay widths ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\mathrm{ee}}$ of the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)$, $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(2S)$, and $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(3S)$ we obtain 1.30\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08, 0.52\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04, and 0.42\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03 keV, respectively.

Abstract

In the presence of anomalies, the requirement that a classical symmetry group $G$ has a proper action on the fermion measure or in the effective Lagrangian description imposes Bohr-Sommerfeld conditions on the anomalies, and often implies that $G$ is broken to a subgroup $H$ as well. We show these results in this paper and apply them to QCD and SU(5). In particular, constraints on the QCD order parameter are derived, and an argument is presented which suggests that the breakdown of the chiral flavor symmetry and the emergence of some sort of generation structure in QCD may be natural.

Abstract

A fully interacting effective chiral Lagrangian obeying the anomalous axial-baryon-current conservation law is constructed. This Lagrangian is a generalization of one implied by the $\frac{1}{N}$ approximation. In a certain sense, the old $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ model is recovered. Our Lagrangian displays the dependence of amplitudes on the quantum-chromodynamic vacuum angle $\ensuremath{\theta}$, gives soft ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ theorems, and hints at a possible complementarity between the instanton and $\frac{1}{N}$ approaches. We can rewrite our model in terms of a gauge-invariant gluon field.

Abstract

We present the results of a search for monoenergetic photons from the process UPSILON(1S) el+X. Upper limits at 90% confidence level for the branching ratio B(UPSILON(1S) el+X) range from 0.1% to 1.4% for photon energies between 150 and 2000 MeV.

Abstract

The D/sup asterisk0/ is perhaps the narrowest known strongly decaying system. The decay mode D/sup asterisk0/..-->..D/sup +/..pi../sup -/ is kinematically ''forbidden.'' However, the small width leads to a line shape extending to many times the full width and hence, the above decay takes place with a small branching fraction and may be measurable in detectors like MARK III or CLEO II. We present estimates for the branching fraction and discuss the implications of measuring it.

Abstract

Using the CLEO magnetic detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we find B(UPSILON(2S)..--> mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/) = 0.018 +- 0.008 (statistical) +- 0.005 (systematic) and B(UPSILON(2S)..-->..tau/sup +/tau/sup -/) = 0.017 +- 0.015 +- 0.006. .AE
