Abstract

The γ-ray strength functions and level densities of Ge73,74 have been extracted up to the neutron-separation energy Sn from particle-γ coincidence data using the Oslo method. Moreover, the γ-ray strength function of Ge74 above Sn has been determined from photoneutron measurements; hence these two experiments cover the range of Eγ≈1-13 MeV for Ge74. The obtained data show that both Ge73,74 display an increase in strength at low γ energies. The experimental γ-ray strength functions are compared with M1 strength functions deduced from average B(M1) values calculated within the shell model for a large number of transitions. The observed low-energy enhancements in Ge73,74 are adopted in the calculations of the Ge72,73(n,γ) cross sections, where there are no direct experimental data. Calculated reaction rates for more neutron-rich germanium isotopes are shown to be strongly dependent on the presence of the low-energy enhancement.

27. Measurement of the 2H(n,γ)3H reaction cross section between 10 and 550 keV

Abstract

We have measured for the first time the cross section of the 2H(n,γ)3H reaction at an energy relevant to big-bang nucleosynthesis by employing a prompt discrete -ray detection method. The outgoing photons have been detected by means of anti-Compton NaI(Tl) spectrometers with a large signal-to-noise ratio. The resulting cross sections are 2.23±0.34,1.99±0.25, and 3.76±0.41µb at En=30.5,54.2, and 531 keV, respectively. At En=30.5 keV the cross section differs from the value reported previously by a factor of 2. Based on the present data the reaction rate has been obtained for temperatures in the range 107-1010 K. The astrophysical impact of the present result is discussed. The obtained cross sections are compared with a theoretical calculation based on the Faddeev approach, which includes meson exchange currents as well as a three-nucleon force.

28. New data for total 3He(γ,p)D and 3He(γ,pp)n cross sections compared to current theory

Abstract

A simultaneous measurement of the cross sections of the 3He(γ,p)D and 3He(γ,pp)n reactions has been performed for the first time using monoenergetic pulsed γ-rays at E=10.2 and 16.0 MeV. Charged fragments from the reactions were detected with an efficiency of 100% using a 4 time projection chamber containing 3He gas as an active target. The incident γ-ray flux was measured by a γ-ray detector. Both the track and energy loss signals of charged fragments were obtained in an off-line analysis and used to clearly identify the reaction channel. Thus, the (γ,p) and (γ,pp) cross sections have been determined with small uncertainty. A comparison of the new data to current theory based on the AV18+Urbana IX nuclear forces including π- and ρ-like meson exchange currents shows a severe discrepancy at 10.2 MeV, while at 16.0 MeV data and theory agree within about 12%. Three-nucleon force effects are small, but in general shift the theory in the correct direction.

Abstract

Ordinary muon capture (OMC) on enriched 100Mo isotopes was studied for the first time to investigate neutrino nuclear responses for neutrinoless double-β decays and supernova neutrino nuclear interactions. Muon capture on 100Mo proceeds mainly as 100Mo(µ,xn)100-xNb with x being the number of neutrons emitted from negative muon capture. The Nb isotope mass distribution was obtained by measuring delayed γ rays from radioactive 100-xNb. By using the neutron emission model after the muon capture, the neutrino response (the strength distribution) for OMC was derived. The OMC strength distribution shows a giant resonance (GR) at the peak energy around 11-14 MeV, suggesting the concentration of the OMC strength at the muon GR region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Photoneutron cross sections were measured in the 209Bi(γ, xn) reaction with x=1-4 at energies from the neutron threshold to 40 MeV using quasimonochromatic laser Compton-scattering γ-ray beams. A novel technique of direct neutron-multiplicity sorting with a flat-efficiency detector was used. Results are compared with the positron in-flight annihilation data of Livermore and Saclay as well as with bremsstrahlung data. The present neutron yields are consistent with the latest photoactivation measurement with bremsstrahlung. The giant dipole resonance component of the total photoneutron cross section is reasonably reproduced by model calculations of the Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov plus quasiparticle random phase approximation based on the Gogny D1M interaction for both E1 and M1 components. In contrast, the quasideuteron component of the total photoneutron cross section requires a factor of ∼3 enhancement of the Levinger parameter. Furthermore, a survival of large (γ,n) cross sections above 20 MeV may indicate the surface effect on the two-component particle-hole state density. The threshold behavior of photoneutron emission is discussed in terms of the average neutron kinetic energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
