Abstract: The interactions between a K/sup ..pi../ = 5/sup -/ aligned two-quasineutron band and two octupole bands have been observed in /sup 164/Er. Band crossings occur in both even- and odd-spin sequences. The members of all three bands are observed from the bandheads (L/sup ..pi../ = 1/sup -/, 2/sup -/, and 5/sup -/) to about 12/sup -/.

Abstract: High spin states in /sup 178/W have been studied using the /sup 170/Er(/sup 12/C,4n) reaction and ..gamma..-ray techniques. The yrast band in /sup 178/W has been identified to spin 18. At this spin the moment of inertia curve shows backbending. The systematics of backbending in the tungsten isotopes is discussed.
