Abstract

The neutron-induced fission cross section of Np237 was experimentally determined at the high-resolution and high-intensity facility n-TOF, at CERN, in the energy range 100 keV to 9 MeV, using the U235(n,f) and U238(n,f) cross section standards below and above 2 MeV, respectively. A fast ionization chamber was used in order to detect the fission fragments from the reactions and the targets were characterized as far as their mass and homogeneity are concerned by means of α spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy respectively. Theoretical calculations within the Hauser-Feshbach formalism have been performed, employing the empire code, and the model parameters were tuned in order to successfully reproduce the experimental fission cross-sectional data and simultaneously all the competing reaction channels.

Abstract

Background: The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Improvement of the 243Am(n,? ) cross section uncertainty. Method: The 243Am(n,? ) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN with a BaF2 total absorption calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The 243Am(n,? ) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature have been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the 243Am(n,? ) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries.

Abstract

The neutron-induced fission cross section of U234 has been measured at the CERN n-TOF facility relative to the standard fission cross section of U235 from 20 keV to 1.4 MeV and of U238 from 1.4 to 200 MeV. A fast ionization chamber (FIC) was used as a fission fragment detector with a detection efficiency of no less than 97%. The high instantaneous flux and the low background characterizing the n-TOF facility resulted in wide-energy-range data (0.02 to 200 MeV), with high energy resolution, high statistics, and systematic uncertainties bellow 3%. Previous investigations around the energy of the fission threshold revealed structures attributed to β-vibrational levels, which have been confirmed by the present measurements. Theoretical calculations have been performed, employing the talys code with model parameters tuned to fairly reproduce the experimental data. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The (n,γ) reaction of the radioactive isotope 93Zr has been measured at the n-TOF high-resolution time-of-flight facility at CERN. Resonance parameters have been extracted in the neutron energy range up to 8 keV, yielding capture widths smaller (14%) than reported in an earlier experiment. These results are important for detailed nucleosynthesis calculations and for refined studies of waste transmutation concepts. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The yield of the neutron capture reaction 232Th(n,γ) has been measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n-TOF at CERN in the energy range from 1 eV to 1 MeV. The reduction of the acquired data to the capture yield for resolved resonances from 1 eV to 4 keV is described and compared to a recent evaluated data set. The resonance parameters were used to assign an orbital momentum to each resonance. A missing level estimator was used to extract the s-wave level spacing of D0=17.2±0.9 eV. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The (n,γ) cross section of 96Zr has been investigated at the CERN n-TOF spallation neutron source. High-resolution time-of-flight measurements using an enriched ZrO2 sample allowed us to analyze 15 resonances below 40 keV with improved accuracy. On average, the capture widths were found to be 25% smaller than reported in earlier experiments. If complemented with the contribution by direct radiative capture, the derived Maxwellian averaged cross sections are consistent with activation data at kT=25 keV. The present results confirm the astrophysical implications for the s-process branching at 95Zr. © 2011 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The neutron-induced fission cross section of {sup 236}U was measured at the neutron Time-of-Flight (n-TOF) facility at CERN relative to the standard {sup 235}U(n,f) cross section for neutron energies ranging from above thermal to several MeV. The measurement, covering the full range simultaneously, was performed with a fast ionization chamber, taking advantage of the high resolution of the n-TOF spectrometer. The n-TOF results confirm that the first resonance at 5.45 eV is largely overestimated in some nuclear data libraries. The resonance triplet around 1.2 keV was measured with high resolution and resonance parameters were determined with good accuracy. Resonances at high energy have also been observed and characterized and different values for the cross section are provided for the region between 10 keV and the fission threshold. The present work indicates various shortcomings of the current nuclear data libraries in the subthreshold region and provides the basis for an accurate re-evaluation of the {sup 236}U(n,f) cross section, which is of great relevance for the development of emerging or innovative nuclear reactor technologies.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross sections of the Zr isotopes play an important role in nucleosynthesis studies. The s-process reaction flow between the Fe seed and the heavier isotopes passes through the neutron magic nucleus {sup 90}Zr and through {sup 91,92,93,94}Zr, but only part of the flow extends to {sup 96}Zr because of the branching point at {sup 95}Zr. Apart from their effect on the s-process flow, the comparably small isotopic (n,{gamma}) cross sections make Zr also an interesting structural material for nuclear reactors. The {sup 94}Zr (n,{gamma}) cross section has been measured with high resolution at the spallation neutron source n{sub T}OF at CERN and resonance parameters are reported up to 60 keV neutron energy.

Abstract

Neutron-induced fission cross sections for {sup nat}Pb and {sup 209}Bi were measured with a white-spectrum neutron source at the CERN Neutron Time-of-Flight (n{sub T}OF) facility. The experiment, using neutrons from threshold up to 1 GeV, provides the first results for these nuclei above 200 MeV. The cross sections were measured relative to {sup 235}U and {sup 238}U in a dedicated fission chamber with parallel plate avalanche counter detectors. Results are compared with previous experimental data. Upgraded parametrizations of the cross sections are presented, from threshold energy up to 1 GeV. The proposed new sets of fitting parameters improve former results along the whole energy range.

Abstract

The cross section of the reaction {sup 197}Au(n,{gamma}) was measured with the time-of-flight technique at the n{_}TOF (neutron time-of-flight) facility in the unresolved resonance region between 5 and 400 keV using a pair of C{sub 6}D{sub 6} (where D denotes {sup 2}H) liquid scintillators for the detection of prompt capture {gamma} rays. The results with a total uncertainty of 3.9%-6.7% for a resolution of 20 bins per energy decade show fair agreement with the Evaluated Nuclear Data File Version B-VII.0 (ENDF/B-VII.0), which contains the standard evaluation. The Maxwellian-averaged cross section (MACS) at 30 keV is in excellent agreement with the one according to the ENDF/B-VII.0 evaluation and 4.7% higher than the MACS measured independently by activation technique. Structures in the cross section, which had also been reported earlier, have been interpreted as being due to clusters of resonances.

Abstract

A high-resolution measurement of the neutron-induced fission cross section of U234 and Np237 has been performed at the CERN Neutron Time-of-Flight facility. The cross sections have been determined in a wide energy range from 1 eV to 1 GeV using the evaluated U235 cross section as reference. In these measurements the energy determination for the U234 resonances could be improved, whereas previous discrepancies for the Np237 resonances were confirmed. New cross-section data are provided for high neutron energies that go beyond the limits of prior evaluations, obtaining important differences in the case of Np237. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Neutron resonance analyses have been performed for the capture cross sections of Os-186, Os-187, and Os-188 measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN. Resonance parameters have been extracted up to 5, 3, and 8 keV, respectively, using the SAMMY code for a full R-matrix fit of the capture yields. From these results average resonance parameters were derived by a statistical analysis to provide a comprehensive experimental basis for modeling of the stellar neutron capture rates of these isotopes in terms of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. Consistent calculations for the capture and inelastic reaction channels are crucial for the evaluation of stellar enhancement factors to correct the Maxwellian averaged cross sections obtained from experimental data for the effect of thermally populated excited states. These factors have been calculated for the full temperature range of current scenarios of s-process nucleosynthesis using the combined information of the experimental data in the region of resolved resonances and in the continuum. The consequences of this analysis for the s-process component of the Os-187 abundance and the related impact on the evaluation of the time duration of galactic nucleosynthesis via the Re/Os cosmochronometer are discussed.

Abstract

Because the relatively small neutron capture cross sections of the zirconium isotopes are difficult to measure, the results of previous measurements are often not adequate for a number of problems in astrophysics and nuclear technology. Therefore, the Zr-92(n,gamma) cross section has been remeasured at the CERN n_TOF facility, providing a set of improved parameters for 44 resonances in the neutron energy range up to 40 keV. With this information the cross-section uncertainties in the keV region could be reduced to 5% as required for s-process nucleosynthesis studies and technological applications.

Abstract

The (n,γ) cross section of Au197 has been measured at n-TOF in the resolved resonance region, up to 5keV, with the aim of improving the accuracy in an energy range where it is not yet considered standard. The measurements were performed with two different experimental setup and detection techniques, the total energy method based on C6D6 detectors, and the total absorption calorimetry based on a 4π BaF2 array. By comparing the data collected with the two techniques, two accurate sets of neutron-capture yields have been obtained, which could be the basis for a new evaluation leading to an extended cross-section standard. Overall good agreement is found between the n-TOF results and evaluated cross sections, with some significant exceptions for small resonances. A few resonances not included in the existing databases have also been observed. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The U-233(n, f) cross section has been measured at the white neutron source n_TOF in a wide energy range with a dedicated fission ionization chamber. We report here the results from similar to 30 meV to 1 MeV neutron energy. The U-233(n, f) cross section has been determined relative to a reference sample of U-235(n, f) measured simultaneously with the same detector. The very high instantaneous neutron flux and the intrinsically low background of the n_TOF installation result in an accuracy around 3 range, while the energy resolution of the neutron beam allows for an accurate description of the fission cross section by means of R-matrix analysis over a wide energy range. The results are, in general, in good agreement with the most recent high-accuracy measurement of this fission cross section, over the more limited range of the previous measurements, and indicated that even the latest evaluations underestimate the cross section in the epithermal region. The present high-quality data provide the basis for a more precise evaluation of the U-233 fission cross section and for improving the reliability of databases needed for the design of new energy systems based on the Th/U cycle.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross sections of the Zr isotopes are relevant to studies in nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, and nuclear technology. The valence neutron of {sup 91}Zr with respect to the neutron magic nucleus {sup 90}Zr has interesting implications for the statistical analysis in the proximity of shell closures. In stellar nucleosynthesis, the Zr isotopes are important for the s-process reaction flow between the Fe seeds and the heavier isotopes. Because of its relatively small (n,{gamma}) cross sections, Zr represents also an interesting structural material for nuclear reactors. For the same reason, these cross sections are difficult to measure and reliable data are sparse. Therefore, the (n,{gamma}) cross sections of the Zr isotopes have been remeasured at the CERN n{sub T}OF facility. Thanks to its high instantaneous flux, good energy resolution, and low background, this facility is particularly suited for the determination of small, resonance-dominated cross sections. In this work, results for the {sup 91}Zr(n,{gamma}){sup 92}Zr reaction are reported in the neutron energy range from thermal to 26 keV. In this region, accurate data of 157 resonances could be obtained, 33 of these resonances are not present in the main databases and/or were observed for the first time.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross sections of the Zr isotopes have important implications in nuclear astrophysics and for reactor design. The small cross section of the neutron magic nucleus Zr-90, which accounts for more than 50 for the stellar s-process, because it acts as a bottleneck in the neutron capture chain between the Fe seed and the heavier isotopes. The same element, Zr, also is an important component of the structural materials used in traditional and advanced nuclear reactors. The (n, gamma) cross section has been measured at CERN, using the n_TOF spallation neutron source. In total, 45 resonances could be resolved in the neutron energy range below 70 keV, 10 being observed for the first time thanks to the high resolution and low backgrounds at n_TOF. On average, the Gamma(gamma) widths obtained in resonance analyses with the R-matrix code SAMMY were 15 these results, the accuracy of the Maxwellian averaged cross section for s-process calculations has been improved by more than a factor of 2.

Abstract

The (n,γ) cross section of Pb206 has been measured at the CERN n_TOF facility with high resolution in the energy range from 1 eV to 620 keV by using two optimized C6D6 detectors. In the investigated energy interval about 130 resonances could be observed, from which 61 had enough statistics to be reliably analyzed via the R-matrix analysis code SAMMY. Experimental uncertainties were minimized, in particular with respect to (i) angular distribution effects of the prompt capture γ-rays, and to (ii) the TOF-dependent background due to sample-scattered neutrons. Other background components were addressed by background measurements with an enriched Pb208 sample. The effect of the lower energy cutoff in the pulse height spectra of the C6D6 detectors was carefully corrected via Monte Carlo simulations. Compared to previous Pb206 values, the Maxwellian averaged capture cross sections derived from these data are about 20% and 9% lower at thermal energies of 5 keV and 30 keV, respectively. These new results have a direct impact on the s-process abundance of Pb206, which represents an important test for the interpretation of the cosmic clock based on the decay of U238. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

The nuclear resonance parameters and the capture cross section of the neutron magic isotope 139La have been measured relative to 197Au in the energy range of 0.6 eV to 9 keV at the neutron time-of-flight (n TOF) facility at CERN. We describe the experimental apparatus and the data analysis procedures, which concerned mainly the efficiency correction by means of the pulse height weighting function technique and the determination of different background components. We extracted the resonance parameters and the main nuclear quantities such as the resonance integral RI = 10.8 ± 1.0 b, the average γ widths for s and p waves γ l=0 = 50.7 ± 5.4 meV and γ l=1 = 33.6 ± 6.9 meV, the nuclear level densities D l=0 = 252 ± 22 eV and D l=1 < 250 eV, and the neutron strength functions S0 = (0.82 ± 0.05) × 10−4 and S1 = (0.55 ± 0.04) × 10−4. These results represent a significant improvement over previous data. The deduced Maxwellian-averaged capture cross sections are important for the interpretation of the most recent spectroscopic observations in low-metallicity stars.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of Pb204 has been measured at the CERN n_TOF installation with high resolution in the energy range from 1 eV to 440 keV. An R-matrix analysis of the resolved resonance region, between 1 eV and 100 keV, was carried out using the SAMMY code. In the interval between 100 keV and 440 keV we report the average capture cross section. The background in the entire neutron energy range was reliably determined from the measurement of a Pb208 sample. Other systematic effects in this measurement were investigated and precisely corrected by means of detailed Monte Carlo simulations. We obtain a Maxwellian average capture cross section for Pb204 at kT=30 keV of 79(3) mb, in agreement with previous experiments. However our cross section at kT=5 keV is about 35% larger than the values reported so far. The implications of the new cross section for the s-process abundance contributions in the Pb/Bi region are discussed. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The radiative neutron capture cross section of {sup 207}Pb has been measured at the CERN neutron time of flight installation n{sub T}OF using the pulse height weighting technique in the resolved energy region. The measurement has been performed with an optimized setup of two C{sub 6}D{sub 6} scintillation detectors, which allowed us to reduce scattered neutron backgrounds down to a negligible level. Resonance parameters and radiative kernels have been determined for 16 resonances by means of an R-matrix analysis in the neutron energy range from 3 keV to 320 keV. Good agreement with previous measurements was found at low neutron energies, whereas substantial discrepancies appear beyond 45 keV. With the present results, we obtain an s-process contribution of 77{+-}8% to the solar abundance of {sup 207}Pb. This corresponds to an r-process component of 23{+-}8%, which is important for deriving the U/Th ages of metal poor halo stars.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of Bi-209 has been measured at the CERN n_TOF facility by employing the pulse-height-weighting technique. Improvements over previous measurements are mainly because of an optimized detection system, which led to a practically negligible neutron sensitivity. Additional experimental sources of systematic error, such as the electronic threshold in the detectors, summing of gamma-rays, internal electron conversion, and the isomeric state in bismuth, have been taken into account. gamma-Ray absorption effects inside the sample have been corrected by employing a nonpolynomial weighting function. Because Bi-209 is the last stable isotope in the reaction path of the stellar s-process, the Maxwellian averaged capture cross section is important for the recycling of the reaction flow by alpha decays. In the relevant stellar range of thermal energies between kT=5 and 8 keV our new capture rate is about 16 presently accepted value used for nucleosynthesis calculations. At this low temperature an important part of the heavy Pb-Bi isotopes are supposed to be synthesized by the s-process in the He shells of low mass, thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars. With the improved set of cross sections we obtain an s-process fraction of 19 +/- 3 residual of 81 +/- 3 is also of relevance for the design of accelerator driven systems based on a liquid metal Pb/Bi spallation target.

We have measured the neutron capture reaction yield of Th-232 at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN in the energy range from 1 eV to 1 MeV. The average capture cross section has been extracted in the energy range from 4 keV up to 1 MeV with an overall accuracy better than 4 data. The average cross section has been expressed in terms of average resonance parameters using the partial waves l=0,1, and 2.

Abstract

The Sm151(n,γ) cross section was measured with the time-of-flight technique from 0.6 eV up to 1 MeV relative to the Au standard with an overall uncertainty of typically 6%. Neutrons were produced by spallation at the innovative n_TOF facility at CERN; the γ rays from capture events were detected with organic C6D6 scintillators. Experimental setup and data analysis procedures are described with emphasis on the corrections for detection efficiency, background subtraction, and neutron flux determination. At low energies, resonances could be resolved up to about 1 keV, yielding a resonance integral of 3575±210 b, an average s-wave resonance spacing of D0 =1.49±0.07 eV, and a neutron strength function of S0 =(3.87±0.33) ×10-4. Maxwellian-averaged capture cross sections are reported for thermal energies between 5 and 100 keV. These results are of relevance for nuclear structure studies, nuclear astrophysics, and nuclear technology. The new value of the Maxwellian-averaged cross section at kT=30 keV is 3.08±0.15 b, considerably larger than previous theoretical estimates, and provides better constraints for the thermodynamic conditions during the occurrence of the slow neutron capture process in low-mass stars during their asymptotic giant branch phase. © 2006 The American Physical Society.
