Abstract

We have studied the electronic structure of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$N ($x$ = 0.0, 0.02 and 0.042) grown on Sn-doped $n$-type GaN using photoemission and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Mn $L$-edge x-ray absorption have indicated that the Mn ions are in the tetrahedral crystal field and that their valence is divalent. Upon Mn doping into GaN, new state were found to form within the band gap of GaN, and the Fermi level was shifted downward. Satellite structures in the Mn 2$p$ core level and the Mn 3$d$ partial density of states were analyzed using configuration-interaction calculation on a MnN$_{4}$ cluster model. The deduced electronic structure parameters reveal that the $p$-$d$ exchange coupling in Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$N is stronger than that in Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As., Comment: 6pages, 10figures. Abstract

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with a circularly polarized 7-eV laser, and find that the angle-resolved pattern of circular dichroism (CD) for the topological surface state of Bi2Se3 is dramatically changed with surface aging. Shortly after sample cleaving, the CD pattern exhibits a sin (φ)-like modulation (φ is the Fermi surface angle) reminiscent of the helical spin texture. Intriguingly, this pattern gradually changes with time, and eventually turns into a sin (2φ) -like modulation on the aged surface. These two patterns are also revealed in quantum well states with different quantum numbers, indicating that the CD pattern is a valid measure to identify the surface confinement of electrons. Abstract

Interference of spin-up and spin-down eigenstates depicts spin rotation of electrons, which is a fundamental concept of quantum mechanics and presents technological challenges for the electrical spin manipulation. Here, we visualize this coherent spin physics through laser spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on a spin-orbital entangled surface state of a topological insulator. It is revealed that the linearly polarized laser can simultaneously excite spin-up and spin-down states, and these quantum-spin bases are coherently superposed in photoelectron states. The superposition and the resulting spin rotation is manipulated by the direction of the laser field. Moreover, the full observation of the spin rotation displays the phase of the quantum states. This presents a new facet of laser-photoemission technique for investigation of quantum-spin physics, opening new possibilities in the field of quantum spintronic applications.
