The efficient population of the triplet excited states in heavy metal-free organic chromophores has been one of the long-standing research problems to molecular photochemists. The negligible spin-orbit coupling matrix elements in the purely organic chromophores and the large singlet-triplet energy gap (Δ E S-T ) pose a hurdle for ultrafast intersystem crossing (ISC). Herein we report the unprecedented population of triplet manifold in a series of nitrogen-annulated perylene bisimide chromophores (NPBI and Br-NPBI). NPBI is found to have a moderate fluorescence quantum yield ( Φ f = 68 ± 5%), whereas Br-NPBI showcased a low fluorescence quantum yield ( Φ f = 2.0 ± 0.6%) in toluene. The femtosecond transient absorption measurements of Br-NPBI revealed ultrafast ISC ( k ISC = 1.97 × 10 10 s -1 ) from the initially populated singlet excited state to the long-lived triplet excited states. The triplet quantum yields ( Φ T = 95.2 ± 4.6% for Br-NPBI, Φ T = 18.7 ± 2.3% for NPBI) calculated from nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements showed the enhancement in triplet population upon bromine substitution. The quantum chemical calculations revealed the explicit role of nitrogen annulation in tuning the excited state energy levels to favor the ISC. The near degeneracy between the singlet and triplet excited states observed in NPBI and Br-NPBI (Δ E S-T = -0.01 eV for NPBI, Δ E S-T = 0.03 eV for Br-NPBI) facilitates the spin flipping in the molecules. Nitrogen annulation emerges as a design strategy to open up the ISC pathway and the rate of which can be further enhanced by the substitution of a heavier element.

Perylene bisimides are widely studied due to their various applications. Most research is carried out on neutral molecules but charged species are essential in the context of organic electronics and photovoltaics. In this study, we carry out ultrafast transient absorption spectroelectrochemistry and coherent two-dimensional electronic spectroelectrochemistry on three different neutral perylene bisimide derivatives as well as their singly and doubly reduced species. We compare an unsubstituted, flat parent perylene bisimide with two twisted ones that introduce spin-orbit coupling, leading to enhanced intersystem crossing. The internal conversion from higher excited states to the lowest electronically excited state occurs in the picosecond regime with lifetimes significantly shorter for the charged species compared to the neutral ones. Coherent oscillations of the transients for the flat dianion of parent perylene bisimide indicate the occurrence of Fermi resonance. The corresponding vibrational coupling and the superposition of the participating vibrational modes may lead to an enhanced charge separation and triplet formation.

While spin-orbit coupling does not play a decisive role in the photophysics of unsubstituted perylene diimides (PDI), this changes dramatically when two phenylselenyl or phenyltelluryl substituents were attached to the PDI bay positions. In the series of PhO-, PhS-, PhSe-, and PhTe-substituted PDIs we observed strongly decreasing fluorescence quantum yield as a consequence of strongly increasing intersystem crossing (ISC) rate, measured by transient absorption spectroscopy with fs- and ns-time resolution as well as by broadband fluorescence upconversion. Time-dependent density functional calculations suggest increasing spin-orbit coupling due to the internal heavy-atom effect as the reason for fast ISC. In case of the selenium PDI derivative we found significant singlet oxygen sensitization via the PDI triplet state. The corresponding radical anions of the chalcogen substituted PDIs were also prepared and investigated by optical and EPR spectroscopy. Here, the increasing SOC results in an increase of the g -tensor anisotropy, and of the isotropic g -value in solution, albeit quasirelativistic density functional calculations show only a relatively small fraction of the spin density to be located on the chalcogen atom.

The absorption and emission characteristics of (ppz)2(dipy)IrIII, (ppz)(dipy)PtII and (ppz)(dipy)PdII, where ppz stands for phenylpyrazole and dipy for a phenyl meso-substituted dipyrrin ligand, have been investigated by means of combined density functional theory and multireference configuration interaction including scalar relativistic and spin-orbit coupling effects. These results were compared with experimental spectra. The complexes exhibit a high density of low-lying electronically excited states originating from ligand-centered (LC) and metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) states involving the dipyrrin ligand. In addition, metal-centered (MC) states are found to be low-lying in the Pd complex. In all three cases, the first strong absorption band and the phosphorescence emission band stem from LC excitations on the dipyrrin ligand with small MLCT contributions. The MLCT states show more pronounced relaxation effects than the LC states, with the consequence that the first excited state with predominant singlet multiplicity is of SMLCT/LC type in the heavier Ir and Pt complexes. Substantial spin-orbit coupling between SMLCT/LC and TLC enables fast and efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) and a high triplet quantum yield. Phosphorescence rate constants are rather small in accord with the dominant LC character of the transitions. Out-of-plane distortion promotes nonradiative decay of the excited state population via the MC states thus explaining the lower phosphorescence quantum yield of the Pt complex. The spectral properties of the Pd complex are different in many aspects. Optimization of the S1 state yields a dipyrrin intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) state with highly distorted nuclear arrangement in the butterfly conformers leading to nonradiative deactivation. In contrast, the primarily excited SLC state and the SMLCT/LC state of the twist conformer have nearly equal adiabatic excitation energies. The lack of a driving force toward the SMLCT/LC minimum, the high fluorescence rate constant of the bright SLC state and its moderately efficient ISC to the triplet manifold explain the experimentally observed dual emission of the Pd complex at room temperature.

Perylene bisimides (PBIs) are dyes known for combining high absorption and emission in the visible region with thermal and photochemical stability. H-bond-directed aggregation driven by free imide groups has been reported to promote the uncommon J-type aggregate formation of PBIs. J-aggregates are highly desired thanks to their bathochromically shifted narrow absorption and fluorescence due to excitonic coupling, together with hyperchromicity and superradiance compared to the monomer. Herein we present the water soluble MEG-PBI showing interesting aggregation in water and in the solid state. Unlike its hydrophobic counterparts, MEG-PBI aggregates in water with increasing temperature, indicating entropy-driven self-assembly. Temperature-dependent Resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopy was employed for the structural characterization of MEG-PBI in aqueous solution versus toluene and in aggregated thin films, employing excitation at different wavelengths to probe the contribution of various chromophores to the supramolecular structure of the aggregate. We find that the perylene core distorts upon aggregation, where the bonds along the perylene long N-N axis lengthen and the ones perpendicular to that shorten, suggesting a head-to-tail arrangement due to H-bonding between neighboring units.

A tetraphenylsquaraine was synthesized whose structure was elucidated by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. Unlike all known indolenine squaraines, the tetraphenylsquaraine shows an unusual nonplanar structure with the four phenyl groups pointing away from the squaric acid core in order to avoid steric congestion. This tetraphenylsquaraine was polymerized by a Yamamoto coupling to form a conjugated polymer with Xn = 38. The absorption spectra of this polymer are red-shifted compared to that of the monomer and show a J-type absorption band due to exciton coupling. Transient absorption spectra with fs-time resolution display a strong ground state bleaching signal with a peak on the red side rising concurrently with the decay of a peak on the blue side of an isosbestic point at 12 000 cm-1. This behavior is caused by energy transfer between two slightly different sections of the polymer with time constants of 0.3 and 2.6 ps. According to semiempirical calculations these different sections are stretched and slightly bent conformations of the polymer strand. Power dependent transient absorption measurements indicate exciton annihilation which also proves the excitons to be very mobile.

Constituting an intermediate state of matter between molecules and solid state materials, dye aggregates can give important insights into functional properties. Despite the importance of fluorescence for many applications, it turns out that the conventional methods for quantum yield determination are not applicable to dye aggregates and so far no method has been introduced for the accurate determination of the fluorescence quantum yields of dye aggregates. Here we suggest two measurement routines for the quantum yield determination of strongly absorbing dye aggregates. Both methods provide the quantum yield of the aggregated species without the necessity of reaching a fully aggregated state, which is particularly important for the most common case imparted by the low association constants of π-π-stacking interactions. The routines are experimentally validated with two perylene bisimide dyes whose self-assembly is driven by the concerted interplay of hydrogen bonding and π-π-stacking interactions, leading to structurally well defined co-facially stacked dimers at intermediate concentrations and a further growth into larger H-aggregates at a higher concentration. Compared to other H-aggregates relatively high fluorescence quantum yields of up to 28% are found for both the co-facially stacked dimers and the larger H-aggregates.

The relative orientation of chromophores is a key factor in determining the relationship between the structure and the functionality in molecular multichromophore ensembles. In the case of structurally flexible molecular systems in solution, the task to clarify the relevant effects of accessible chromophore orientations with spectroscopic observations is very demanding. In this study, we address this issue by investigating a series of differently connected multichromophoric systems composed of highly dipolar merocyanine dyes that are systematically varied in their substitution pattern and the number of chromophores attached to a bridging benzene ring. Combining electro-optical absorption (EOA) and UV/Vis spectroscopy with density functional theory (DFT) as well as exciton theory discloses conformational preferences and rationalizes the optical properties of the interacting chromophores. Our findings suggest for all multichromophoric systems there is a relative orientation of the chromophores which compensates for the individual dipole moments of the merocyanine dyes by pointing preferably in opposing directions. These orientations furthermore rationalize the observed spectral properties by partly excitonically-coupled subunits.

The quantum efficiency of light emission is a crucial parameter of supramolecular aggregates that can be tuned by the molecular design of the monomeric species. Here, we report on a strong variation of the fluorescence quantum yield due to different phases of aggregation for the case of a perylene bisimide dye. In particular, a change of the dominant aggregation character from H- to J-type within the first aggregation steps is found, explaining the observed dramatic change in quantum yield. This behaviour is rationalised by means of a systematic study of the intermolecular potential energy surfaces using the time-dependent density functional based tight-binding (TD-DFTB) method. This provides a correlation between structural changes and a coupling strength and supports the notion of H-type stacked dimers and J-type stack-slipped dimers. The exciton-vibrational level structure is modelled by means of an excitonic dimer model including two effective vibrational modes per monomer. Calculated absorption and fluorescence spectra are found to be in reasonable agreement with experimental ones, thus supporting the conclusion on the aggregation behaviour.

The interactions between different chromophores within a molecular system are crucial to comprehend relaxation dynamics, regardless if one deals with small molecules or larger systems like polymers or aggregates. We investigate a series of merocyanine molecules that contain one, two or three highly dipolar (μg = 13.1 D) dyes in close vicinity to study the influence and origin of interactions, e.g., electronic, vibronic, or the formation of excitons. Relaxation dynamics are probed via transient absorption and coherent two-dimensional spectroscopy. Furthermore, we derive a general relaxation model which can be applied for all merocyanines under investigation and can be used as a reference point for other dipolar donor-acceptor dyes. The intramolecular charge-transfer state of the monomeric merocyanine is stabilized by dipolar neighbor molecules in the bis- and tris-chromophoric dyes.

Large arrays of n-channel organic thin film transistors of a core-chlorinated naphthalene diimide were processed by solution shearing on a silicon dioxide dielectric exhibiting ambient stable electron mobilities of up to 0.95 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). Under bias stress an increase in effective charge carrier mobility of up to 4.26 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) has been observed.

We recorded fluorescence time traces, and simultaneously either the fluorescence lifetime or the emission spectra from single perylene bisimide (PBI) dimers embedded in a polystyrene matrix. In these traces three distinct intensity levels can be distinguished, which reflect the photo-induced radicalisation of one of the perylene subunits. Differences in the energy transfer rate between the neutral PBI and the reversibly formed radical anion give rise to variations in the chronological order of the appearance of the intensity levels, which allowed us to categorise the time traces into three distinct groups: Type 1 blinking corresponds to a high energy transfer rate, type 2 blinking to fluctuations between large and small transfer rates (dynamic quenching), and type 3 blinking results from small energy transfer rates together with Coulomb blockade. The information that we obtain from the distributions of the fluorescence lifetimes at the various signal levels allows us to relate these differences to properties of the local polymer environment of the dimers.

In this study, we investigated bulk-heterojunction solar cells composed of PC(61)BM and squaraine dyes with different donor subunits. Both, H- and J-aggregates, have been observed for the squaraine dyes in the mixture, even for the same dye depending on the annealing conditions of the blends. Supramolecular organization of the squaraine dyes noticeably affects solar cell performance. The J-aggregate exhibits a red-shift of the absorption maximum that results in a significant increase in the short-circuit current and decrease in the open-circuit voltage compared to the as-cast device. The H-aggregate shows a blue-shift in the absorption maximum and concomitantly only a moderate increase in the short-circuit current as well as an increase in the open-circuit voltage. The course of domain growth during annealing was monitored by local photocurrent mapping.

Perylene bisimides (PBIs) are excellent dyes and versatile building blocks for supramolecular structures. Only recently have PBIs been shown to depict absorption characteristics of J-aggregates. We apply electronic structure calculations and femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy to the monomeric, bay-substituted building-block of a PBI aggregate in dichloromethane to investigate its electronically excited states in order to provide the ingredients for the description of excitons in the aggregates and their annihilation processes. The PBI S(1)←S(0) absorption spectrum and the S(1)→S(0) emission spectrum have been assigned based on time-dependent Density Functional Theory calculations for the geometry-optimized electronic ground state and excited state structures in the gas phase. The monomeric absorption spectrum contains a strong transition at 580 nm and a broad shoulder between 575-500 nm, both features are attributed to a vibrational progression with an effective vibrational mode of 1415 cm(-1) whose major contributing vibrational normal modes are breathing modes of the perylene body. The effective vibrational mode of the emission spectrum is characterized by a frequency of 1369 cm(-1), whose major contributing vibrational normal modes are characterized by perylene and phenol (bay-substituent) CH bendings. The S(n)←S(1) excited state absorption spectrum is assigned based on Multi-Reference Configuration Interaction methodology. Here, we identify three transitions which give rise to two broad experimental features, one being located between 500 and 600 nm and the other one ranging from 650 to 750 nm., (This journal is © the Owner Societies 2011)

This article discusses recent progress by a combination of spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations in classifying and characterizing organic mixed-valence systems in terms of their localized vs. delocalized character. A recently developed quantum-chemical protocol based on non-standard hybrid functionals and continuum solvent models is evaluated for an extended set of mixed-valence bis-triarylamine radical cations, augmented by unsymmetrical neutral triarylamine-perchlorotriphenylmethyl radicals. It turns out that the protocol is able to provide a successful assignment to class II or class III Robin-Day behavior and gives quite accurate ground- and excited-state properties for the radical cations. The limits of the protocol are probed by the anthracene-bridged system 8, where it is suspected that specific solute-solvent interactions are important and not covered by the continuum solvent model. Intervalence charge-transfer excitation energies for the neutral unsymmetrical radicals are systematically overestimated, but dipole moments and a number of other properties are obtained accurately by the protocol.

Nanoassemblies are formed via self-assembly of ZnS capped CdSe quantum dots (QD) and perylene bisimide dyes (PBI). Upon assembly formation with functionalized dye molecules the QD photoluminescence (PL) is quenched. Quenching has been assigned partly to FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer) and NON-FRET processes. By means of time resolved single particle spectroscopy of immobilized QD-dye assemblies, it is demonstrated that NON-FRET processes are due to new non-radiative decay channels caused by the assembly formation process itself. Immobilized (single) assemblies exhibit the same processes as ensembles of assemblies in toluene solution. Only one dye molecule on a QD quenches the PL up to 50%, which is much stronger than is expected when replacing a volume related number of ligands. NON-FRET processes are distinct from photoinduced charge and/or energy transfer. A combination of a Stern-Volmer and FRET analysis of ensemble experiments supports the investigation of the dynamics of assembly formation at extremely low concentration ratios of PBI to QD. This allows us to distinguish between the effects of PBI and ligands on PL quenching on a single molecule level which is not possible in conventional ligand dynamic experiments.

A terpyridine-functionalized perylene bisimide chromophore (TPBI) has been used as a building block in the stepwise, layer-by-layer fabrication of self-assembled Fe-TPBI multilayers on gold, with the assembled supramolecular chains oriented approximately perpendicular to the gold surface. Time-resolved spectroscopy measurements seem to indicate that the energy absorbed by the multilayer is promptly dissipated to the gold surface by ultrafast processes.

A wave packet approach to the calculation and interpretation of circular dichroism (CD) spectra is applied to the spectroscopy of aggregates of a merocyanine dye. A combined analysis of absorption and CD spectra allows for the extraction of geometric information and excited state electronic coupling. It is shown that in the case of dimer aggregates of a chiral merocyanine dye, it is possible to infer the dynamics of an exciton transfer directly from the CD spectrum. This relation is established via the Fourier relation to a time-dependent correlation function reflecting the quantum dynamics in the dye aggregate.
